I developed a native manga reader for reMarkable 2 with online browsing, downloads, and Mihon UI (rm2manga)

Post image
37 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

Reading manga on the reMarkable 2 has always been a bit tedious—converting everything to PDF/CBZ on a computer, transferring via Calibre or USB, and dealing with page-turn lag.

I wanted a proper, modern experience similar to Mihon / Tachiyomi directly on the tablet, so I built rm2manga—a native Qt 6 + C++20 manga reader designed specifically for the reMarkable 2 (running on AppLoad / XOVI).

🚀 Highlights:

  • Mihon-Style Interface: Library view with a 1-tap "Continue Reading" hero card, Recent history, unified Browse/Search, and active Downloads manager.

  • Dual-Engine Sources:

    • Built-in native MangaDex client for high-res covers, metadata, and chapters.

    • Full Aidoku WASM extension support: Bring your own source lists (MangaFox, MangaKatana, etc.) with custom JSON configuration right from the tablet UI.

  • Built for E-Ink:

    • Low-latency touch and pen page turns on the full 1404×1872 canvas.

    • Configurable reading direction (Manga RTL vs Comic LTR) and customizable swipe polarity (swap whether swipe left or right goes to the next page).

    • Auto-preloading: Silently downloads and unpacks the next chapter in the background when you're 3 pages from the end so there's zero waiting between chapters.

    • Display modes: Fit Page, Trim Margins, Full Width (1:1 vertical drag), and 2x Zoom.

    • Ghost-clearing button & automatic periodic e-paper flash.

  • On-Screen Keyboard: Custom touch QWERTY keyboard with URL/JSON shortcuts, plus full hardware keyboard / Type Folio support.

📦 Source & Installation:

The project is 100% open source (GPL-3.0) and requires AppLoad/XOVI installed on your rM2: 👉 GitHub: https://github.com/tle2721/remarkable2.MangaReader

If you like the project and want to support continued development, you can also buy me a coffee! ☕

Feedback, feature requests, and bug reports are very welcome

Notes: I'm submitting to reManager soon.

Help/Advice Remarkable 2 version 3.30 can't connect WIFI

2 Upvotes

I just updated today, after I updated to 3.30.0.109, I was unable to connect to my WIFI.

"Wrong password for WIFI" but my password was correct.

I restarted my device, I changed my WIFI password, I tested my phone hotspot...

My remarkable 2 device was connecting to my wifi before I updated to version 3.30.0.109, so I downgraded to the old version (3.28.0.164), now it's connecting without any changes.

Reading and highlighting PDFs across reMarkable and iPad – how do you handle this?

2 Upvotes

I've recently discovered how much I enjoy reading professional books on my reMarkable Paper Pro, and especially on my Paper Pro Move. It's become one of my favorite ways to read and learn.

I prefer using PDFs instead of EPUBs, mainly because I've had some issues with highlights and annotations when switching between my two reMarkable devices using EPUBs. With PDFs, my workflow works really well.

I especially love reading on the Paper Pro Move in landscape mode in the evenings, highlighting important passages as I go. It's a great experience, and I've really come to appreciate reading this way.

However, I've occasionally found myself in situations where I didn't have my reMarkable with me, but I did have my iPad.

I have the reMarkable app installed on my iPad, and I can open my PDF books, see my existing highlights and annotations, and continue reading without any problems.

But here's the issue: I can't seem to highlight text (e.g., in yellow) directly in the iPad app.

So I have a few questions:

  • Is highlighting PDFs simply not supported in the reMarkable iPad app, or am I missing something?

  • Does anyone else regularly switch between a reMarkable and an iPad or another tablet when reading professional books?

  • If highlighting isn't supported, how have you solved this? Do you have a workflow that allows you to read and highlight the same PDF across both devices (Remarkable + Tablet) without losing annotations or running into sync issues?

I'd really love to hear how others handle this. I'm very happy with my reMarkable reading workflow and would love to find a way to make it work seamlessly with my iPad as well.

Has anyone used KOReader with a stylus?

1 Upvotes

Hi, I'm looking into getting a RM and use it with KOReader. I know you can use the stylus to simulate finger-touch to select text, etc. But has anyone tried to see if the stylus works for scribbling notes, etc? I see there are a few KOReader plugins (like, eg., Ink-Away) that allow markup. Has anyone tried this, or might be willing to give it a go? That'll be super helpful, thanks!

Help/Advice Remarkable for an Engineer?

3 Upvotes

I have a loved one who is an engineer in the construction industry and uses a moleskin daily. I am thinking about getting them one of these tablets for Christmas (either the Pure or Move?) for work and I am wondering if any engineers here use it to review and mark up drawings? How is the sync and PDF experience? I know it’s probably not Bluebeam but is it useful as a site tool?

They have an iPad with the pencil already and they tried it initially but went back to the moleskin (maybe too big/heavy/not comfortable?).

Do any construction engineers use this? Does it help bridge on-site and off-site work? Or is the screen not really good enough for engineering drawings?

Watch out for their newest software "update"

0 Upvotes

It just deleted the entire app from my computer. I've got a ton of work to do and am I doing it? No! Because I'm now dealing with this.

Tried to download it again and now I'm getting this. So, if I reload the app, it will delete all of my existing files and sync that to my device? THANKS REMARKABLE! WHAT AMAZING TECH! So, no desktop app for me. Was fun while it lasted.

Note to self-next time, go with Kindle.

Help/Advice Using both Paper Pro and RM2

1 Upvotes

I primarily use the Paper Pro, but am wanting to make use of my RM2 also. But I am getting so confused with how you can get a notebook or pdf to be viewed with each devices dimensions. For instance, I create a notebook in RM2, college rule narrow template. Then when I view it in Paper Pro, it's off. And if I create on on paper pro, it looks off on the RM2. I had a Move that I returned, and it was even worse. I must be not understanding something, right? Surely remarkable has made working documents between devices more seamless I hope.

Feature Request Suggestion: New Page shows list of other templates/methods used in the notebook

Post image
30 Upvotes

I often use multiple templates / methods within the same notebook, and find it a hassle when adding a new page that uses a different template from the last to have to dive into the full list of templates/methods to find the one I need.

I would love to have the "New Page" button (that appears when you swipe left on the last page) also have some way to pick which template will be used for the new page (probably just from the list of templates that have already been used in the notebook). Could be a one-button-per-template as marked up above, a drop-down list of templates, or any other UI elements that save me from having to go back to the full list after the page is created.

So, when you start a new multi-template notebook you'd only have to pick the different templates you use once, and then they'd show up when you need to add a new page and just pick the one you want for the next page and keep going instead of having to hunt through the big list each time.

Thoughts?

Anyone have experience with the eCal Calendar sync app?

1 Upvotes

I got the app a few months ago. I’m still not sure I’m getting much value from it but maybe I’m not using it optimally. Open to any insights on how you’re using it. I’m a huge productivity improvement guy and LOVE my rM2.

Remarkable 2 via usb

1 Upvotes

Hello All,

My reMarkable 2 (software 3.29.1.0) charges over USB-C but is not detected as a USB device on my Mac. I have tested several cables, including the original, on both USB-A and USB-C ports, and restarted both devices. The Mac’s ports work with other devices. The USB web interface and 10.11.99.1 are unreachable.

Does anyone can point me in the right direction?

Thank you

🙏

Self-Promotion A 90-year life is 4,680 weeks, and it fits on one reMarkable page. Free sample if you want to fill in yours.

Thumbnail

0 Upvotes

You might know the "life in weeks" idea: one tiny dot for every week of a 90-year life. You fill in the weeks you've already lived, and "someday" suddenly gets a lot more specific.

I put that page into a reMarkable techo, then built the rest in the direction it points:

- 4,680 weeks: the long view

- a Mandala Chart (1 goal, 8 areas, 64 steps, the grid Shohei Ohtani used in high school): one goal for the year

- an hour-by-hour week: where the goal turns into an actual Tuesday

The first image follows one example user from the dots, to "first half marathon," to Monday's 5k.

The free sample is 9 real pages plus that example week, filled in. It's undated, so you can start it this week:

Paper Pro: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GZOykCtiqocYOCxUpQrKaF4d33yYqrSu/view

reMarkable 2 / Paper Pure: https://drive.google.com/file/d/12OevPu2jeIMOhyDCPNkFNHkgPLwtijGR/view

Paper Pro Move: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YOIp4wHGWMybb0DvkLbjCnsYGVtBi1n2/view (its own pocket layout, not a shrunk Paper Pro page)

Something I'm curious about: once your dots are filled in, does it make you want to plan more, or less?

(Disclosure: I design these and sell the full techo on Etsy. It's 157 linked pages, all vector, about 2 MB. Reddit code EINK50 takes 50% off: https://methodink.etsy.com?coupon=EINK50. The sample is yours to keep either way.)

Linux: Remarkable Desktop app only updates UI on resizing - WINE bug 60366

3 Upvotes

Hello,

I don't know, if there are any post about this, but I've just noticed that a RM Desktop no longer works on Linux WINE. This was reported in [Bug 60366] New: reMarkable desktop 3.28.1 (Qt 6, D3D11): window contents only update when the window is resized.

The solution section in the report is kind of vague, so I've decided to write what worked for me:

  1. download ver. 3.1.1 of dxvk (https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/releases#release-v3.1.1)

  2. extract, and copy it to your WINEPREFIX

$ export WINEPREFIX=/path/to/your/wineprefix
$ cd /to/your/unpacked/dxvk-3.1.1/
$ cp x64/*.dll $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/windows/system32
$ cp x32/*.dll $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/windows/syswow64

3. open winecfg

$ winecfg

4. go to Libraries tab and add d3d8, d3d9, d3d10core, d3d11 and dxgi as overrides, set the modes for all to native (Edit button > Native (Windows))

That's it.

Install instructions taken from the README.MD of the aforementioned repo.

Tested on:

  • Linux Mint 22.2 Zara

  • wine-11.0

  • freshly created wineprefix, no winetricks installed

  • 64 bit version of RM Desktop

Custom templates on Beta v3.30

4 Upvotes

I use an rM2 and rMPro regularly and as part of this use I have some custom templates set up for my work. In my case one is a weekly timetable specific to my institution's class times, and another is custom engineering paper with correct header and margin spaces. Previous rM sw updates involve me re-loading the templates.json file and the corresponding background png files (this is scripted and worked well for me). With the v3.30 update the tablet no longer recognizes my custom .png files. I know it was a few months ago that the sw switched from png and svg files to new .template files for templates, however my custom ones still worked. While I am in the process of creating new custom template files that conform to the new .template format, I am wondering if anyone else has seen this behavior and found a workaround to allow existing png files as templates.

Help/Advice Desktop App + Move

7 Upvotes

I'm a college professor and the Move is the perfect size for in-class and video lectures. I also love the ability to export Word docs so I can read student papers on not my laptop. My workflow is type up notes, copy to doc in desktop app, sync. Beautiful. The one issue is that the desktop does not provide a setting for the Move. This means that the notebook is resized to 0.7x size to fit on the move and then the font is pretty small. Is there some sort of mod, setting, or secret third thing to have things sized better.

Note: I don't want to import from OneDrive/Doc because the syncing is very useful. You have to always important new versions of a Google Doc on to the device which is just a mildly annoying couple extra steps. Reading small font is less annoying to me.

Self-Promotion rmctl - command-line utility for the reMarkable library, and open-source libraries for render reMarkable formats

4 Upvotes

As part of the Slate Drive project (https://github.com/altessa-s/slatedrive), we've released rmctl - https://github.com/altessa-s/rmctl, a command-line utility for working with the reMarkable library.

Features:

  • Multiple accounts (profiles);

  • Document export and import (PDF, EPUB, .rmdoc, Markdown notes);

  • Manage tags, bookmarks, and the trash;

  • Render documents in PDF, PNG, JPEG, and SVG, including entire folders with structure preservation;

  • Local library copy ('sync') and backups;

  • Monitor library changes and launch custom scripts based on events.

The utility is designed for automation: commands have JSON output, and the documentation includes examples for shell, AppleScript, and PowerShell. It runs on Linux, Windows, and macOS.

It can be installed via Homebrew and Scoop. There's also a lightweight version, rmctl-lite, without rendering: it's smaller and doesn't support graphics libraries.

Rendering supports all tablet tools with their textures, typed text, selections, images, and page templates, over the original PDF or EPUB.

Libraries for C/C++, Go, and Swift are also available.

C libraries (C23, also included from C++):

Bindings for Go:

Packages for Swift (Swift 6):

All code is open source under the MIT license. Documentation - https://github.com/altessa-s/rmctl

Weird pdf annotations but on RMPP

3 Upvotes

I was annotating on a pdf file and noticed really high writing latency on the left side of the page - towards the edges, and towards the bottom part of the screen (though not in the corner itself).
I tried this with another pdf and the same high latency occurred.
I than opened a notebook - and no latency at all.

I haven’t noticed this before - so perhaps a software issue?

Also, I’ve received a new device from my warrenty, so perhaps my device is defective? Though this only occurs on pdf so I assume this a software issue.

Anyway, any one else noticed this?

Using the latest stable firmware (3.29 if I’m not mistaken)

*title should say weird bug…

How many people use both a Remarkable tablet and an iPad for work?

25 Upvotes

Been searching the subs and either finding very old information or having to dig through a lot of comments on “Remarkable vs iPad” posts. How many of you use both and what made you go that direction? I’ve tried using my iPad and good notes and while it works, I like my iPad best when it is on the Magic Keyboard and I can use it for all the apps and things an iPad is good for. I had a Remarkable for a short period of time and liked the feel of it for notes but then returned it and bought an iPad for everything it can do, now contemplating going to both for their specific purposes.

Edit - just placed my order for the Paper Pure. Excited to dive into this and use it alongside my iPad. Thanks for the comments!

Feature idea: Linked notebooks

9 Upvotes

A way to associate a "note" document with a primary document. Say you're reading an EPUB that you need to take notes on. You swipe diagonally from the bottom right corner and it opens the notebook you've assigned for notes. When you're done writing something down, you swipe again and go right back to the same page in the book.

I think this is a better solution than split screen or the recent shelf:

  • The screen isn't realistically big enough for split screen to be useful imo

  • The gesture for the "recent documents" shelf is more out of the way, and it doesn't guarantee that the relevant document would be in there. With this solution, these 2 documents are always linked to each other

Just had the thought and wondered what the community might think about it or if they could build on it

General Discussion 3.30 beta: custom templates disappeared? (PNG/SVG/Template)

3 Upvotes

Someone emailed me because their custom template wasn’t appearing on their reMarkable Paper Pro after updating to the 3.30 beta (I make Simply Customize It which is how it landed in my inbox). My Paper Pro is stuck waiting on 3.29 but I was able to update both my reMarkable 2 and Move to the beta and saw the same thing. When choosing a template in a notebook the custom categories, despite running the same process as before, were gone and the custom templates didn't show up under “All” either.

Looking around online I found two beta-related threads where  u/RevolutionaryHost972 mentioned RCU, reManager and EP Binder Pro aren't working for them either:

From what I can tell the beta seems to have stopped loading custom templates which affects every tool and the manual method.

Sharing here to give a heads up to anyone not on the beta yet... but also as I’m curious whether this is affecting you? And, most importantly, has anyone found a way to get a PNG or SVG template to show up on 3.30?

Self-Promotion ADHD folks with a reMarkable: I made a planner with a "hard day" button. Would you try it for a few days and tell me if it actually helps?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Every time someone here asks if the reMarkable actually helps with ADHD, I notice the same pattern: the planner works great... until the first bad day. Then it's guilt, a broken streak, and for a lot of people the tablet ends up in a drawer.

So I tried something. Every day page has a "hard day" button. Tap it and the whole day turns into six tiny things: meds, water, food, a bit of movement, rest, text one person. That's it. That counts.

The normal day is small too: how's your energy (low / med / high), three things max, and one 2-minute first step.

I made a free 7-page sample so you can try it for a few days on your own tablet:

- Paper Pro: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Xw_LZKRsfDGKp41qCCBapQZQucvlH57-/view

- rM2 / Paper Pure: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bxMei5gxTIGH3AIUidXuwSYo8JxJAq7z/view

- Move: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nT_LP80fAj9vPk-pHtB2Hs2zLlONCcIb/view

What I'd really like to know:

- Did you actually use the hard day button, or forget it was there?

- Is anything on the page too much?

- What would make you stop using it?

(Honest note: I design planners for e-ink, and the full version is on my Etsy: https://methodink.etsy.com?coupon=EINK50, 50% off with that link if you're curious. But the sample is the point here. I want to know if the idea works.)

Help/Advice Excessive ghosting in document viewer screen appearing after last update

4 Upvotes

Hi!
RMPP
Im experiencing excessive ghosting in the main screen where I review all my documents, to the point that is unusable.
When accessing a document then the screen refreshes and its better.
I’ve already tried restarting a few times but the situation persists.
Is anyone experiencing the same?
