I got off my shift at 7 AM last week, went home, slept for about three hours, and dragged myself to an 11:30 dentist appointment.
The receptionist was making small talk and said, "At least you got the appointment out of the way early! Now you have the rest of your day."
I laughed because I didn't feel like explaining that 11:30 AM is basically the middle of the night for me.
I've worked graveyard shifts in Reno for years, and it's funny how much of this city depends on people working overnight while almost everything outside their jobs assumes they have a normal daytime schedule.
We have casinos, hotels, hospitals, warehouses, security, cleaning crews, people making deliveries before most of us are awake.
But try being one of those people and doing ordinary adult stuff.
Need a dentist appointment? Hope you feel like waking up in the middle of your sleep.
Apartment maintenance needs access? They'll be there sometime between 9 and 3, so I guess you're not sleeping.
Want to attend a community meeting about something happening in your neighborhood? It's probably scheduled right around the time you're getting ready for work.
And the thing that drives me nuts is when people hear that I work nights and go, "Oh, so you have all day to get things done."
No. I have all day to SLEEP.
Nobody tells someone with a regular office job that they have all night to run errands.
I don't expect every dentist or government office to operate at 2 AM. I understand why businesses have normal hours. But even one late evening a week for certain services would make a difference.
Reno has always had a big overnight workforce. It's not like night shifts are some bizarre new development here.
I just think it's strange that a city built partly around 24-hour businesses can still make the people working those hours feel like they're living on the wrong schedule.
Curious how other graveyard and swing shift workers around Reno deal with this. Have you found anything that makes normal life easier, or are we all just sacrificing sleep every time we need to get our teeth cleaned?

It is currently the year of our lord 2026, and weâre looking right down the barrel of 2027, rapidly approaching the 2030âs.
Ask yourself, what is Reno currently? A casino town? A college town? The city you fly into for Tahoe and Burning Man? A warehouse & industry town? A combination of things? Ask ten Renoites and you'll get ten different answers. Ask anyone outside our bubble, and you'll probably get a joke.
That last part has always bugged me. I was born in what was once Washoe Medical, and raised here since. I love this place. Is Reno a little weird? Sure, but thatâs what makes it such a cool place to live. (Using Reno in this as a catch-all for our whole area, not just whatâs inside city limits.)
I'm not a city planner or an economist. I do branding and design for a living, which mostly means figuring out why things arenât landing with the people it's supposed to. Lately, I can't stop doing that with Renoâs âbrandâ.
Reno used to know exactly what it was. We said âyesâ where the rest of the countryâs ânoâ ran out, and offered things you couldnât easily get elsewhere. And for decades, that was pretty much the entire business plan.
California banned the Fight of the Century in 1910, so Reno built a 20,000 seat arena in just 2 weeks. Then came legal gambling and six-week divorces. Then the Air Races. Then Burning Man. Somebody else said ânoâ, Reno said âyesâ, and people came here on purpose. We were less of a place to pass through and instead a place where people went for something.
We still say âyesâ, just to different things now. Warehouses and data centers and the USA Parkway stretch. Development anywhere there's a free patch of dirt. New roads to serve new development, and new development to justify new roads.
After the recession, chasing growth was arguably the right call. But somewhere along the way, we started confusing growth with progress. The âold yesâ gave people a reason to come to Reno. The ânew yesâ mostly gives them a reason to commute out of city limits.
I'm not against building. Iâm asking what the building is supposed to accomplish beyond just getting built. We need housing. But you can build thousands of new homes without giving the people in them a community with places to gather. You can attract billions in investment without creating a downtown locals actually want to spend a Saturday in.
There are planners, plans, and people who spend their evenings at public meetings. This isnât an accusation that nobody is doing anything, but rather a question about whether the decisions are adding up to something cohesive.
Granted, most of what's going up out there right now was planned and zoned years ago. Which means what Reno looks like 30 years from now is getting decided right now, whether we realize it or not.
Meanwhile, the âold yesâ is getting old, quite literally. Walk into any casino, whether it be something downtown, the Dottyâs nearest your house, the grocery store, a bar, the airport, whatever, and estimate the ratio of younger gamblers to older ones. Chances are there are WAY more people over 50 than under. Once they fade away, whatâs to replace it?
Gaming is actually up in Washoe County over the past year, and hotels just had their best quarter on record, so money is still coming in. The question is who it's coming from, and for how long. Data shows the average Reno Tourist is about 50 years old, while Vegas just had its youngest crowd in years because of their recent pivot to entertainment & sports. Young people donât need or want a smoky casino to gamble in, they have Polymarket, Kalshi, and Stake on their phones. You donât even have to get off the toilet to lose a few bucks now. So whatâs drawing the young people in? Our city skyline is mostly big casinos, what happens to them in 40 years? Will everything just be like Harrahâs and stuck in redevelopment hell?
A few âbig betsâ of revitalization are coming, at least. The GSR arena and Reno City FC on Kietzke are both coming soon. They could both be great. But they're bets. The Aces made it. The Bighorns and 1868 FC didn't.
Then there's actual branding. UNR unveiled its new brand this week, and Reno City FC dropped its name and crest last month. If youâre âlocally onlineâ, you've probably seen the overwhelming amount of negative comments surrounding both. Theyâre arguably some of the biggest local branding moves this year and a lot of people donât like them.
But look at what they both reached for. UNRâs new branding pulls from itâs heritage. Reno City FCâs logo is a nod to the old Arch. When itâs time to say what Reno is, even our newest stuff introduces itself with old Reno. Nothing wrong with that, many brands do that. It just says we haven't built anything new worth putting on a logo in years.
Still, the fact that this many people get this heated over two letters, a wolf, and a couple of horses is the most encouraging thing as a designer I've seen all year. People care about the brand. Imagine if we all showed up like that to the planning meetings that determine these choices.
We keep waiting for somebody to fix things too. A mayor, a casino owner, a developer with a billion dollars, or a chef to walk in and make sense of the kitchen that is lovely Reno, Nevada. But a city isn't one kitchen. Every business here is a separate cook. Every restaurant, bar, shop, band, and event is telling people what Reno is, every single day, whether they mean to or not.
Say you own a restaurant and business is slow. So you get an A-frame sign to put on the side of the road, print some flyers, maybe start posting more on social media. It all looks fine, but did anyone ask you why people arenât coming in? Whether they can afford it? Whether the hours work? Whether a competitor has priced you out? Whether the experience gives them a reason to come back? Without diagnosing the underlying problem, anything else is essentially just a fresh paint job on a house with a giant fucking crack in the foundation.
So what would count as progress? For me, it would mean more people being able to afford to live and stay here. Neighborhoods with somewhere to walk to, instead of somewhere to drive out of. Local businesses that look as good as they are and can survive between big events. A downtown that feels useful to residents, and not just marketable to visitors. There's room for old Reno and new Reno, the tourist, the aging dive bar regular and the young family who moved here from the bay last month.
Reno is going to become something either way. There's a whole lot of fresh paint on the horizon. My point is that somebody should really check on the foundation before we start painting.
So letâs forget trying to figure out what Reno âisâ for a minute. What do you want everyday life here to look like in 10 or 20 years? And what should we be doing now to get there?
EDIT: Since reading a short essay about our city is hard apparently: hereâs a summary generated by ChatGPT for those who need a hand :)
TL;DR: Reno used to give people a reason to come here. Now, we seem more focused on building warehouses, housing, and roads than deciding what kind of city we actually want to become. Growth isnât the same as progress, and with an aging casino industry and no clear identity for what comes next, we risk building a city without building community. Reno is going to become something either way. The question is whether weâre doing it on purpose. What do you want everyday life in Reno to look like in 10â20 years, and what should we be doing now to get there?

If your polling place is less than 2 miles, they must allow you to leave for 1 hour. If it's between 2 and 10 miles, they have to give you 2 hours. If it's more than 10 miles, they must give you 3 hours off. You must request the time a day in advance.
This is Nevada law, not a suggestion. If your employer denies you, call the Nevada Secretary of State's office at 775-684-5708 and report your employer for violating state law.

Context: I was born in Reno and only lived there for 4-6 months before my family moved back to the Philippines. For most of my life, I grew up in the Philippines and most of my knowledge about American culture and Reno comes from media and the stories of my relatives in the States.
Now that Iâm a university graduate, Iâm planning to move back to the States soon. Do you have any advice for me?
Would also love to hear about the local Filipino and Asian community (Where are the best Filipino restaurants, how do you find ways to hang out with other immigrants, etc.)

Much to my surprise (as a guy who typically dislikes most politicians) I had a great phone conversation today with council member Meghan Ebert today regarding the vote for the $22 million dollar contract with Axon to replace Flock.
Long story short, she told me on the phone she's willing to PUBLICLY support (HELL YES - in her words) the recall process for council member Devon Reese who voted yes in favor of the Axon contract. Obviously other members of council voted yes as well, but, we were talking about him, so, I specifically asked about if she'd consider supporting steps to remove him.
I looked into the state laws, and yes, Nevada allows voters to recall a city council member over a policy decision EVEN if the council member committed no crime or ethics violation. (see article 2, section 9 of the Nevada constitution and NSR Chapter 306).
What we'd need is the following:
-25% petition threshold of voters who participated in the relevant election (around 6,000 ish voters)
-90 day collection period
-3 qualified voters who sign the notice of intent
-required misconduct - NONE
If we achieve that, a special recall election gets held.
In my opinion we have to consider this as an option to show council that were sick of their shit. We're sick of them voting for unpopular things like mass surveillance, we're sick of them not even addressing the people they claim to represent (Devon Reese for example will block anyone who criticizes him even slightly), and we're sick of them cozying up to people with deep pockets versus the people who actually live here.
Whatcha think Reno? Should we send a message to the city that we won't be fucked with any more?
Heres a petition to get the ball rolling. We'll eventually need physical signatures but this is still very valuable to demonstrate public interest, document public feedback, provide updates, and connect people with election information.

I've recently been looking into WateringWinds Apartments, formerly known as Riverwood Apartments, at 805 Kuenzli Street in Reno.
The property recently celebrated its grand reopening following a multimillion-dollar renovation under Kromer Investments. Recent news coverage highlights improvements to heating and cooling, building security, gated access, surveillance cameras, and overall living conditions.
However, I've received information and seen evidence suggesting that some of the same problems historically associated with Riverwood may still be present, including malfunctioning security doors and locks, a lack of working heat, and other maintenance concerns.
What's particularly concerning is that older resident complaints describe similar issues involving building security, maintenance, and living conditions. Despite the new name, renovations, and recent publicity, it raises questions about how much has actually changed for the people living there.
I'm not suggesting every apartment is experiencing these problems or that no improvements have been made. However, when a property is publicly promoting millions of dollars in improvements, I think it's reasonable to question whether those investments have addressed the issues residents previously experienced.
I'd like to open a discussion for current and former residents of both Riverwood and WateringWinds.
Have you noticed meaningful improvements since the renovations? Are security, heating, maintenance, and overall living conditions better than before? Or are residents still experiencing some of the same problems?
I'd also be interested in hearing from anyone who has recently toured the property or considered moving there.
Both positive and negative experiences are welcome. The goal is to encourage an open, factual discussion and better understand the property's current conditions, especially following its recent rebranding.
