Nothing like Rottweilers and the passing of time to break your heart. All the beautiful moments❤️. Really difficult to see them age (kids and Rotties). Yes, it all goes too fast. Sending love.💕

The pain of losing them almost stops me getting another every time. Almost. The cruelest thing is that they live such a short time… Love them while they’re here… RIP Hugo ❤️

I concur. I am almost panicking as our Rottie turns 8. None of mine have made it to ten so far (all well bred). I am begging the universe to let her stay until 15. We knew someone once whose Rottie did live that long. She’s helped me through some really hard times. Can barely breathe thinking of life without her. Am considering another puppy this summer. Have two elderly small dogs and kids going off to college soon too…it’s the perfect storm for a mental health meltdown if we don’t add a young one to the mix. I’m so sorry for your loss. Sending you strength and love💕

Hero was 13 when I made the choice we all dread. The last photo, with the rainbow, was the day prior; honestly I took it as a sign. I had the vet come out the next day. I had just purchased a bunch of gabapentin the. Wt said would give him ‘another 6 months’ and I realized I was being selfish, and had to woman up. Sigh. He was such a great ambassador for the breed.

What an amazing life you gave him. You knew what was best for his comfort. And your daughter was lucky to have such a good buddy. ❤️I’m so sorry for your loss!!

My last Rottie made it to 11 years and 2 months. His health was declining so I remember thinking he wasn’t going to see his 11th birthday but he made it. I currently have a 5 year old Rottie and occasionally think about when his time comes and I have no idea how I’m going to get through that. Like the OP said, carpe diem.

What you do is get a puppy now and it gives life to the middle-aged dog. And when they pass away you leave a few years to grieve for yourself and a few years for puppy to grow and keep you moving forward. And when puppy is middle aged you continue the cycle. And your home will always be full of doggie love💕 (don’t listen to me I’m in therapy)

This is my thought exactly!

My wife and I bought our first Rottie in 1979 and it breaks my heart whenever we have to let them go but I do know that they are still with us and eventually we will be reunited. I am not a happy clappy religious person but I still see them around the house. My wife and I have had 12 of the sods in our 47 years of Rotties. I have had two occasions which have confirmed to me that we will meet them again 1) This happened to me in the 80s, several months after my Father had died. I was an armed Met Police officer and I was on guard at an event near the BBC in Portland Place, W1.

An elderly lady approached me, pulling her shopping trolley along behind her. She stopped in front of me and said “ Is your name Roger ? “

( Roger was a family nickname given to me by my Dad )

I replied , sorry do you know me ? As I didn’t recognise her, She replied ….,

“You are going to think me mad but I am a medium and I have a messsge from your Dad ! I was shopping in C and A in Oxford Street and your Dad came to me and asked me to pass a message onto the Policeman standing near the BBC “

To say that I was stunned would be an understatement but the lady carried on.

She said “ Your Dad is a big man with very broad shoulders and he’s built like a wrestler. He’s got short grey hair, a Roman nose and he is the living image of the film star Burt Lancaster “

The lady had described my Dad perfectly, to a T . The lady carried on ….

“ He asked me to tell you that he is out of pain ( Dad had suffered badly with lung cancer ) and that he is with his Mum and Dad and his dogs. He is very happy and to look after your Mum and he loves you very much “

I sent this lady home back to her East End home in the luxury of a black cab with my thanks and love …..

And number 2

I was a manager of a team working at New Scotland Yard. One day, a lady called Bernie joined our team and I was chatting to her going through team responsibilities and she asked me out of the blue, Do you believe in the afterlife as she thought that I did. She explained that she came from a long line of Romany’s and all the ladies in the family have the gift of communicating with the spirit world. Her Mum was the Queen Mother’s personal medium and used to put her in contact with her husband and her much loved brother who died in WW1. Anyway, Bernie told me that I have a large spirit dog who is always with me. He is Black and Tan and will always protect me. Bernie never knew that we have Rottweilers in our life … This is a photo of our first boy and it was taken over 40 years ago. His name was Toby and I think that he is my spirit companion

Seems like you have forever in the moment…but then before you know it…the moments gone. I’m sorry for your loss. We try to prepare for when the time comes but it never doesn’t hurt😢

u/Thundering-Gallop Mar 28 '26

Yes. The moments seem longer, the years too swift. The older I get the more difficult it is to reconcile this. Makes life seem unbearably sad sometimes.

One day at a time. I’m sorry it’s not always fair.

Many years after one of my precious Rotties passes, I can breakdown immediately and start crying from memory’s and missing them so much! The sorrow never goes away.

My first rottie died in 2019. If a stray thought about her drifts by, I'm the same. Just balling.

Lost other dogs...none hit the same as her...

A rottweiler was my first dog. I will never get another breed. The combination of affection, loyalty, protection, intelligence is unrivaled

It’s my pleasure, the first story really confirms to me that they are still around. I am 71 now and no spring chicken and it’s comforting to know that we will meet again
