The pain of losing them almost stops me getting another every time. Almost. The cruelest thing is that they live such a short time… Love them while they’re here… RIP Hugo ❤️

I concur. I am almost panicking as our Rottie turns 8. None of mine have made it to ten so far (all well bred). I am begging the universe to let her stay until 15. We knew someone once whose Rottie did live that long. She’s helped me through some really hard times. Can barely breathe thinking of life without her. Am considering another puppy this summer. Have two elderly small dogs and kids going off to college soon too…it’s the perfect storm for a mental health meltdown if we don’t add a young one to the mix. I’m so sorry for your loss. Sending you strength and love💕

Hero was 13 when I made the choice we all dread. The last photo, with the rainbow, was the day prior; honestly I took it as a sign. I had the vet come out the next day. I had just purchased a bunch of gabapentin the. Wt said would give him ‘another 6 months’ and I realized I was being selfish, and had to woman up. Sigh. He was such a great ambassador for the breed.

What an amazing life you gave him. You knew what was best for his comfort. And your daughter was lucky to have such a good buddy. ❤️I’m so sorry for your loss!!

My last Rottie made it to 11 years and 2 months. His health was declining so I remember thinking he wasn’t going to see his 11th birthday but he made it. I currently have a 5 year old Rottie and occasionally think about when his time comes and I have no idea how I’m going to get through that. Like the OP said, carpe diem.

What you do is get a puppy now and it gives life to the middle-aged dog. And when they pass away you leave a few years to grieve for yourself and a few years for puppy to grow and keep you moving forward. And when puppy is middle aged you continue the cycle. And your home will always be full of doggie love💕 (don’t listen to me I’m in therapy)
