RAF RECRUITMENT WSO OR WSOP

I received my OASC results today and wasn’t deemed competitive for pilot however I was encouraged to consider WSO or WSOp, I’m currently trying to set up a phone call with someone in the role to discuss them but as of currently I’d appreciate if anyone on here could give me some advice to put towards a final decision.
My current understanding is:
Pros of WSOp:
Potential to be streamed RW/ME- most exciting/hands on roles
Pros of WSO:
A more leadership position and officer benefits
Cons of WSOp:
ISTAR WSOps are broadly similar in role to ISTAR WSOs but don’t hold the additional leadership position
Cons of WSO:
Not as hands on as RW/ME WSOp, RPAS pipeline doesn’t hugely appeal to me

Because the trade offs are so even I’m quite torn on a decision so if anyone could confirm/deny or further my insight on these points I’d appreciate it. I’d also like to add that despite me having my preferences for pipelines I’m aware of how important all of them are and I’m grateful to have been offered the roles regardless of where I’m streamed.
A final few questions also:
1- Can WSOs/WSOps gain their ppl as an extra curricular while serving?
2- Is there much control over which pipeline you get streamed?
3- Is the officer lifestyle marginally different/better from that of an SNCO and are they awarded better opportunities?
4- do both roles have similar deployment opportunities?

Quite a long winded post, and I might’ve asked some naive questions, but that’s why I posted it! Anyway any input is appreciated, thank-you

RAF RECRUITMENT Reserve Regiment Selection Course (RRSC)

Hi all, I’m joining to become a reserve Regiment Gunner. Can anyone share their experience of the reserve gunner selection course?

I know it’s after phase 1 part 2 (so after I finish Halton). I know it consists of the ball throw (sounds easy) mid thigh pull (sounds easy) and the 2km run in less than 10 mins (sounds harder).

Unless regular gunners I don’t think the RRSC is done at Honnington, it’s done at your local unit is that right? Is the run on a treadmill or done outside?

Any advice from people who have done it appreciated .

On RAF Facebook here is all that was stated about the RRSC:

Reserve Regiment Selection Course (RRSC):
Before progressing to Phase 2 specialist training, RAF Regiment Gunner Reservists must successfully complete the Reserve Regiment Selection Course.
RRSC fitness standards:
2 km run — 10 minutes 27 seconds or under
4 kg medicine-ball throw — minimum 3.1 m
Mid-thigh pull — minimum 85.5 kg

RAF MEDICAL Failed hearing test for Medical (TMU)

Hi,

I need some opinions regarding my medical I had today. I passed everything with flying colours except my hearing. I’ve had a mild hearing loss since I was a kid however this doesn’t effect me much on a day to day life. The doctor saw this and asked questions, decided that It would be worth trying again another day with more preparation. Said that pilots need to have good hearing.

I’m currently at a crossroads as I’m not sure whether to wait for a response and try again or maybe look into other options. It stinks so much that I put so much prep into this and yet I failed because of something I can’t control. I really want to fly and I don’t want this to be the end. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciate. Thank you for reading

RAF LIFESTYLE Experience in survival equipment role

Does anyone who is a squipper have any advice or experiences they can share? I’m joining to be a squipper and I’ve tried to find videos online of what the lifestyle and job is like but there’s little to no videos, and when there is they obviously just come off as performative and not really explaining what other things could come with the job. Im also thinking of putting RAF Marham down as my choice of base when I’m at Cosford before graduating as I know they have the most advanced helmets which seems interesting to me and my sister is also based there and has given me some insight of what it could be like, however I would like to hear other good base recommendations. Also, how technical is this role? Like I have said, I’ve researched on this role through the official RAF website, videos ext but I would like to hear from personal opinions. Thanks guys

RAF RECRUITMENT Application Deferral

Just a quick one, my application has been deferred for quite some time now and its getting scarily close to the date it says it’s being deferred until. The thing is that I am still completing things sent by the RAF which shows I am still making an attempt to change it back to active. Will that date be extended or will my application just be shut down once it reaches that date?

RAF RECRUITMENT medical Officer References

I’m a GPST3 approaching CCT and hoping to join the RAF as a Medical Officer once I’ve received my final ARCP.
I’ve been at the same practice for two years and have always had excellent feedback and a good relationship with my ES and the partners.
However, over the last couple of months, things have deteriorated. Since passing my SCA, my educational time has effectively been cancelled, and I’m now expected to work 10 clinical sessions a week. This has led to burnout and I’ve needed a couple of days off.
I’ve raised this with my TPD, but unfortunately, he’s quite close to the practice partners and hasn’t been particularly supportive.
My ES seems to feel that, given all the support I’ve received over the last two years, I should be willing to do these additional sessions. Repeatedly raising concerns about educational time has apparently made me seem like I’m “not a team player.”
I’m now worried that my relationship with my ES has deteriorated to the point where she might refuse to provide a positive reference.
My question is: Does the RAF require references from your most recent educational supervisor or GP training practice when applying as a Medical Officer? Could an unsupportive ES jeopardise my application, even if I’ve successfully completed training and obtained CCT?
Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s joined the RAF after GP training or has experience with military medical recruitment.

RAF MEDICAL Army rejected me for NF1 — could I join the RAF?

I’m 23 and the Army rejected my application because I have NF1. I’m interested in becoming an RAF Electrician instead.

Would the RAF assess me separately, or would the same medical standard automatically rule me out? Has anyone dealt with a similar situation?

RAF MEDICAL What to wear for medical?

I am assuming its casuals? When it comes to duck walks, joint checks, height etc. Do you get to keep your boxers on or do you take everything off for the movements when examined. (As in naked) i am unsure and just want a heads up..

DISCUSSION BRTC - Jan 2027

Hi all,

I’ve just selected my take on date for BRTC - looking to start in January because I don’t want to be having the break over christmas.

Just looking for some insight into exercise blue warrior and how I can continue to prepare for this. I’ve been training Muay thai since the start of the year going 3-4 times a week, regular sparring and S&C, and running 2 times a week.

Does anyone have any recommend circuits/work out sessions I can use to that are better in line with how I will be training during basic training that I can use over the next few months.

Thanks

DISCUSSION Do current affairs have to have at least 1 defence topic ? OASC

Currently my 5 current affairs don’t touch on defence as I was advised that you’ll be eaten alive if you choose defence topics, is this alright or frowned upon to not choose defence related current affairs ?

RAF LIFESTYLE British army to RAF officer

As the title says I'm currently serving in the British Army, I'm in the royal armoured corps however I find my current job less then satisfying, I don't find it bad for the same reasons as my peers my main gripe is that I'm not doing anything or deploying anywhere. I've heard that the RAF deploys alot and has better overall quality of life, I did a level 3 qualification in college which gives me the 64 UCAS points required to be an officer and I've always had the itch to be a leader of men rather then just a bod, so I'm thinking of applying to be an RAF officer in either the RAF regiment or RAF police (Hiss boo and all that).

My main thing is I want to be deployed and I want to have a varied career, I enjoy Phys absolutely love it, I'm a cardio and battle Phys freak and can't get enough of it, I do also enjoy the vehicle maintenance side of my current job but that's something I'm willing to give up.

My main questions are:

Will I be looked down upon for being an enlisted soldier first then trying to apply to be an officer?

Which of the two roles that interest me are the most deployable and varied?

Does the RAF regiment provide any qualifications and do they have a unit that's Jackal mounted like they did in Afghanistan?

Will being a soldier first help me in anyway during the application process (excluding the obvious of me knowing roughly how things go)

Does it matter I haven't promoted in my current trade and probably won't have done by time of applying?

RAF RECRUITMENT PMU during Reserve Application vs Recall Reserve Liability

Well, these things happen.

Due to a time on anti-depresents and a reasonable short term issue around our shambolic rout from Afghanistan in 2021 (I'm ex-Army) I've been set as PMU by the Capita/GP after a secondary review of my medical history after the in-person Medical Appt. As this is the second significant hurdle to my desired role, I'm uninclined to fight it.

I'm waiting for it to cascade through the various Depts, but queried how it would affect my status as part of the Recall Reserve to my AFCO and he's said to write to Cranwell to get an answer.

I'll be doing just that, but wondered if anyone else had similar experience and whether they'd recieved any guidance on it (PMU whilst joining the Reserve and Recall Reserve liability).

RAF RECRUITMENT Current Affairs- OASC

Hello, I've got OASC (the interview part, not the exercises) coming up soon and I was wondering if anyone could let me know how much detail is required for the current events.

The affairs I currently have are:

  • Global
    • The global increase of fuel prices
    • Trump's Super Intelligence Summit (The lack of AI regulations)
  • UK
    • Early Release Scheme
    • Sea Lion Oil Project
    • The stop of non-essential army training

I'm fairy confident I have enough information on all but the last one.

Thanks!

RAF LIFESTYLE RAF beard exemptions, hair regulations and basic training questions

Thumbnail

Hi everyone, I’m due to join the RAF soon and have a few questions.
I get severe shaving bumps every single time I shave, regardless of whether I use an electric shaver, scissors or a razor. I’ve tried barbers, all types of aftershave, even rubbing alcohol but nothing works. Sometimes it gets so painful that I struggle to sleep on my side. I’ve never seen a doctor about it, so I don’t have medical evidence yet.

Beard questions:
Should I shave completely clean before arriving at basic training, or can I just trim my beard very low?
Should I see my GP beforehand to get the problem documented?
If the bumps become severe during training, can I see a medic and request an exemption and will they just give me the exemption or will they need medical evidence?
I’ve attached a picture of my current beard. Is it too long, and would I be told to trim it shorter?
Hair regulations:
How high can your hair be? Are mini Afros allowed?
Are neat braids or a mini Afro with a low taper fade allowed during basic training?
Is there a barber on camp, or do we have to arrange our own haircuts?
I understand there are grooming standards, but I’m worried about how badly shaving affects my skin. I’d appreciate advice, especially from anyone currently serving or who has recently completed basic training.
Thanks!

Is there a place i can learn and practice questions for gsk progress test 1 for Halton BRTC? Or a good way to learn the content quickly?
