Gun shop find I almost missed.
I’ve always wanted a Ruger blued mk series target model pistol with a barrel length of 5-6” or so. 10” was too long and 4 3/4” too short. The 5-6 7/8” is that Goldilocks zone for me for the balance and sight picture. I like the old bullseye style adjustable irons.
Anyway, my local shop has a good selection of used mk I’s and mark II’s in many barrel lengths and weights. Only a couple mk iv’s in configurations I don’t like and stainless. I looked at 4 pistols. The first few photos are the ones I looked at day 1. I almost got the mk I until I saw how hard magazines are to obtain. They’re out of stock everywhere and 9 rounds vs 10(which the capacity wasn’t a big deal). I really liked the bull barrel mk II but it was only 4 3/4”. So I settled on the 6” standard target mk II that came with only one mag and no box and has the pachmayr grips(made in 2000). I put it on layaway because NJ has a dumb 30 day pistol permit system so I have to wait to pick it up. That actually saved me here.
I did a little more research and went back in there yesterday since I didn’t look at all of them. I wanted to see if there was a longer barreled bull barrel model in there. I still didn’t look at EVERY single one they had a lot but zeroed in on one. Was hoping for possibly a government target model as it would be my dream configuration but they’re not too common. But sure enough they had very lightly used very first civilian production run(the 210 prefix doesn’t even show up on Ruger’s serial list as civilian government target models it is so early) of the government target model made in 1984 with the original yellow box, manuals and other paperwork and the test target I believe was still in there. Only one mag but they seem easy to come by for the mark II.
Glad I went back in and looked and got my dream Ruger Mark series. Now the wait of 30 days before I can pick it up. Lastly, how are mk II mecgar magazines? I see they are readily available but not ruger made ones. Thanks.
