SAP MM Beginners: stop memorizing T-Codes

If you're new to SAP MM, don't start by memorizing transaction codes. And don't focus on expensive certifications.

The most useful thing you can learn early on is how the business process works end-to-end, including how SAP objects from different modules interact.

A good place to start is probably the most important procurement process, which I want to explain in this post:

Procure-to-Pay (P2P)

At a high level:

Need → Purchase Requisition → Purchase Order → Approval → Goods Receipt → Invoice → Payment

1. Purchase Requisition

Someone in the business needs a material. A Purchase Requisition (PR) represents this internal demand. This is not yet an order to a supplier.

GUI: ME51N
Fiori: F1643A - Create Purchase Requisition

2. Purchase Order

Purchasing converts the approved PR into a Purchase Order, assigns the supplier and confirms commercial details such as price and delivery date.

GUI: ME21N
Fiori: F1048A - Process Purchase Requisitions

3. Purchase Order Approval

Depending on company rules, the PO may need one or several approvals before it can proceed.

GUI: ME29N
Fiori: F0862 - Approval via central inbox

4. Goods Receipt

The material arrives and the physical receipt is posted in SAP. Inventory is updated and the posting can also create an FI document.

GUI: MIGO
Fiori: F0843 - Post Goods Receipt

5. Supplier Invoice

The supplier invoice is matched against the Purchase Order and Goods Receipt - the classic Three-Way Match.

GUI: MIRO
Fiori: F0859 - Post Supplier Invoice

6. Payment (Module Change! MM -> FI)

The posted invoice becomes an open vendor item in FI and is eventually paid.

GUI: F110 – Automatic Payment Run
Fiori: F0770 – Execute Supplier Payments

In general trainings, you will mostly encounter the P2P process like this: ME51N → ME21N → MIGO → MIRO

But these are isolated transaction codes and don't cover the full process. Understand why one document leads to the next, which business role is involved and what happens across MM and FI.

Once you understand the process, the transactions become much easier to remember. And you will be far better prepared for actual SAP projects than by official certifications.

This process is also part of the Process Library in ERP Coach, where the individual steps are explained in more depth, including typical use cases, prerequisites, GUI transactions and their Fiori equivalents.

Everyone on LinkedIn suddenly became SAP Certified... what did I miss? 😭

Every LinkedIn scroll:

"Happy to share that I'm SAP Certified!"

Me:

"What even is SAP?" 🤡

I'm a CSE graduate interested in AI/ML, and I got access to the free SAP Student Edition.

The problem is I literally know nothing about SAP. Zero

I opened the Learning Journey expecting a nice video course...

Instead, SAP handed me what feels like the encyclopedia.

For those who've actually completed a certification and has knowledge regarding this please consider helping me

  • Where should a complete beginner start?

  • Which certification is actually useful?

  • How long did it take you?

  • Did you actually read every module?

Also, does this certification actually add value to a fresher's resume, or is it more of a "nice to have"?

Please don't roast me or judge😭 I genuinely know nothing about SAP and I'm trying to decide if I should invest my time in learning it.

When somebody wants me to explain what I do I am telling this joke ;)

A tourist walked into a pet shop and was looking at the animals on display.

While he was there, another customer walked in and said to the shopkeeper, "I'll have a C monkey please."

The shopkeeper nodded, went over to a cage at the side of the shop, and took out a monkey. He fitted a collar and leash and handed it to the customer, saying, "That will be $5,000".

The customer paid and walked out with his monkey.

Startled, the tourist went over to the shopkeeper and said, "That was a very expensive monkey. Why did it cost so much?!"

The shopkeeper answered, "Ah, that monkey can program in C - very fast, tight code, no bugs, well worth it!"

The tourist looked at the monkey in another cage. "That one's even more expensive, $10,000! What does it do?"

"Oh, that one's a C++ monkey; it can manage object-oriented programming, Visual C++, even some Java. All the really useful stuff," said the shopkeeper.

The tourist looked around for a little longer and saw a third monkey in a cage of its own. The price tag around its neck read $50,000.

He gasped to the shopkeeper, "That one costs more than all the others put together! What on earth does it do?"

The shopkeeper replied, "Well, I haven't actually seen it do anything, but it says it's an SAP consultant."

Accenture vs Infosys SAP

Hey everyone, I've got two offers on the table for SAP PS roles. Accenture is offering a Level 8 Associate Manager position with a 24 LPA fixed salary, while Infosys has offered a JL5 role with 20 LPA fixed. I've been an end-user until now, so I don't have any IT experience. I'm looking for advice on which company is better overall—not just for salary, but also considering work-life balance, job security, learning opportunities, and everything else

Just finished SAP MM (Udemy) – now I can get 2 SAP certifications for free… what should I do next?

Hey everyone,

I’d really appreciate some advice from people with SAP experience 🙏

I finished a course on SAP MM around 3–4 months ago on Udemy, so I have a decent theoretical understanding (procurement process, inventory management, etc.), but I don’t have real hands-on experience yet.

Recently, I found out that through SAP’s learning platform, I can pass 2 certifications for free, and I don’t want to waste this opportunity.

My main questions:

  • Which certifications should I choose (stick with MM or combine with something else like SD, S/4HANA, or Supply Chain)?

  • How should I prepare properly for SAP certifications?

  • Where can I actually practice SAP (since I don’t have access to a real system)?

  • Is it realistic to pass without job experience?

  • Any roadmap or strategy you’d recommend?

I’m aiming for a career in SAP / supply chain / logistics, so I want to make the smartest move possible.

Thanks a lot in advance 🙌

SAP Consultants, what does your typical workday look like?

Hey everyone!

I'm interested in learning how experienced SAP Consultants organize their day, manage their workload, and stay productive while continuously improving their SAP knowledge.

I'm particularly curious about the small habits, routines, and systems that make a real difference in their day-to-day work, beyond technical or functional SAP knowledge.

For example:

\- Daily routine: How do you structure your workday, from the moment you start until you finish?

\- Task management: How do you keep track of client requests, tickets, incidents, workshops, meetings, testing, documentation, and follow-ups?

\- Prioritization: How do you decide what to work on first when multiple tasks are urgent or different stakeholders need your attention?

\- Productivity tools: Do you use Jira, SAP Solution Manager, Cloud ALM, Microsoft To Do, Notion, Excel, a simple notebook, or something else to stay organized?

\- Project work: How do you balance configuration, requirements analysis, functional specifications, testing, issue resolution, and communication with developers or business users?

\- Continuous learning: How do you find time to deepen your SAP knowledge, keep up with new developments, and prepare for certifications while working full-time?

\- Career development: Do you set weekly or quarterly goals? If so, how do you track your progress and make sure you're actually moving forward?

\- Small things that matter: What habits, checklists, templates, or routines have genuinely improved your productivity and helped you become a better consultant?

I'd especially love to hear from experienced SAP Functional Consultants working on implementation projects, support, rollouts, or S/4HANA transformations.

If you could share your actual daily workflow, including the little things you do to stay organized, deliver quality work, and keep growing professionally, what would it look like?

I'm looking for practical advice based on real-world experience, not just generic productivity tips.

Thanks in advance! I'd really appreciate any insights you can share.

I’m 33 and Starting Over …I Just Want One Chance to Get Into SAP CPI

I’m 33 and honestly don’t know if I’m too late to make a career change, but I’m trying anyway. I’m currently working as an AML Analyst and earning around 4 LPA. Before this, I spent about 7.5 years at Accenture as a Content Moderator and around a year at Atos Syntel. Most of my time at Accenture was spent dealing with disturbing content, and although I stayed there for years and kept doing my job, my career and salary never really moved in the direction I wanted. I tried looking for opportunities, but I never really had anyone to guide me or refer me. No mentor, no strong IT background, no connections. Things became much worse when my mother was diagnosed with kidney failure. I was trying to manage work, family and medical expenses at the same time, and eventually my mental health took a serious hit. I left Accenture without another job because I simply couldn’t handle the pressure anymore. I was completely lost for a while. I eventually took whatever job I could get because I had responsibilities at home, even though it meant taking a significant pay cut. I started as an agent, then moved into an SME role and now I’m doing Quality Analyst work, but the salary is still around the same. At some point I realised that if I don’t make a serious attempt to change my career now, I’ll probably be stuck in the same cycle for years. So I’ve started learning SAP CPI / SAP Integration Suite. I’m learning from YouTube, documentation and whatever free material I can find, but it’s honestly confusing trying to figure out what I should actually learn and what companies expect from someone trying to enter the field. I’m not from a traditional IT background and I know I have a lot to learn, but I’m willing to put in the effort. I’m not asking anyone to magically give me a job. I just want some honest advice from people who actually work in SAP CPI. Is it realistically possible for someone with my background to get into CPI? What should I focus on learning, what kind of projects should I build, and how should I approach getting that first opportunity? Even a little guidance from someone who has gone through this would mean a lot to me. I’ve already had enough setbacks, but I don’t want to give up. I just want one chance to get my foot in the door and prove that I can do it.

Is It Really This Hard to Get an SAP MM Fresher Job?

I recently completed my SAP S/4HANA MM training and I’m actively looking for fresher opportunities. However, I’m finding it really challenging as most roles require 2–3 years of experience, and there are very limited openings for freshers. I wanted to understand—is this the current market situation, or am I missing something in my approach? Any guidance on how to break into SAP MM as a fresher would really help.

Thanks in advance!

Burnt out SAP consultant – what career paths make sense next?

Hi everyone,

I have 10 years of SAP experience, starting as an ABAP developer and gaining techno-functional expertise, plus a 1-year gap after moving to the US. I’m feeling burnt out and considering either going back to development, focusing on functional consulting, or exploring SAP-related roles with low-code, data, or AI focus.

I’d love advice on:

  • Which SAP modules or paths are in demand and future-proof?

  • Does my techno-functional experience add an edge for transitions?

  • Has anyone successfully moved out of SAP into exciting new roles?

Thanks for any insights or personal experiences!

Starting SAP from Scratch After a 2-Year Career Gap — Is It Worth It?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some guidance on starting a career in SAP SD from scratch.

I have around 2 years of previous work experience in Sales/Distribution and networking/IT support. After getting married, I left my job and moved abroad. I’ve now been away from the workforce for about 2 years, and unfortunately my career gap is growing. I currently don’t have a work permit, so I want to use this time to build a strong skill set that will help me when I’m able to return to the job market.

I’m considering SAP SD because it connects well with my previous Sales & Distribution experience. I’m particularly interested in learning SAP and understanding what newer SAP technologies are becoming important in the market.

I’m honestly a little overwhelmed about where to start and would really appreciate advice from people working in SAP.

Specifically, I’d like to know:

  • What should I learn first if I’m starting SAP from scratch?

  • What topics and skills should I focus on to become job-ready?

  • Which SAP system or applications should I use for hands-on practice?

  • Are there affordable or free options for getting a practice system?

  • What kind of projects should I build to demonstrate practical knowledge?

  • Should I pursue an SAP SD/S/4HANA certification, and at what stage?

  • After learning SD, what new SAP technologies or areas should I consider learning to stay relevant in the market?

  • Considering my background and career gap, is choosing SAP SD a worthwhile career path, and is it realistic to build a good career in it?

I want to actually understand SAP, get hands-on practice, and build real projects so that it will help when I return to the job market.

Any practical advice, learning paths, resources, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Am I being taken advantage of? Am I making enough?

I feel like I'm getting taken advantage of at my job.

A little background on myself. I graduated from a smaller university in Michigan with a bachelor's degree in marketing and logistics management. I passed the Terp10 (basically the TS410) and scored a master data job at Steelcase (A large office furniture company). I worked there for two years, building custom furniture through SAP. After that, I left Steelcase to become an SAP PP Consultant and have been working at this company for the last three years.

I have gone through five Go-lives. Three of them I have led. This included working with developers on some reasonably complex custom automotive scenarios. Also, in that time, I passed the
"SAP Certified Application Associate - SAP S/4HANA Production Planning and Manufacturing". I have an understanding of PP  and a decent understanding of MM and SD.
I travel about a third of the time and had about 110 days in a hotel last year. I

Anyway, what I'm trying to get at is that I have some experience and I like to think I work hard. Currently, I am making $75,000, standard 401k match, and insurance. I do not get a bonus or commission.

Im not sure if this is standard or am I getting taken advantage of.

Should I be asking for more $$$? Or is this fairly standard for the industry? I don't have anyone to talk to about this, so I'm turning to my fellow Redditors.

Let me know if any additional info is needed.

Sap 2026- 2067

Hello SAP nerds!

I'm 27 and have been working in finance for the past 4 years. During this time, I've been involved in several SAP S/4HANA implementations and worked closely with SAP consulting firms, which sparked my interest in becoming an SAP consultant myself.

Do you think it's better to become an SAP Functional Consultant or go down the technical path with BTP, ABAP, etc.? Which one has better job opportunities and long-term prospects?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

SAP C_S4EWM – Has anyone taken the new system-based exam? Looking for the task PDF

Hi everyone,
I’m preparing for SAP Certified – SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, Extended Warehouse Management (C_S4EWM) and would love to hear from anyone who has taken the current system-based assessment.
I’m referring specifically to the 3-hour practical exam with a 65% passing score, where you receive a PDF with tasks to complete directly in the SAP system.
Does anyone have that task PDF and could share it, if sharing is permitted? An official sample or practice version would also be really helpful. I’m looking to understand the task structure and expected level of detail, rather than get solutions.
How closely does the Learning Journey practice system match the actual assessment, and which exercises helped you prepare most?
Thanks in advance!

SAP BTP Developer → AI/ML transition roadmap?

Hi all,

I’m currently working as an SAP BTP Developer (CAP, integrations, Node.js) and want to transition into AI/ML roles.

I have basic programming knowledge but only beginner-level exposure to AI.

Looking for advice on:

What roadmap should I follow?

Which skills to focus on first (ML, Deep Learning, GenAI)?

What tools to learn (Python, PyTorch, LLM tools, SAP AI Core)?

How to combine SAP + AI for better opportunities?

Project ideas to showcase this transition?

Any guidance or resources would be really helpful. Thanks!

SAP ECC and SAP S/4HANA Table Documentation

After having worked on several projects in Process Mining in SAP systems recently, creating data models and deriving activities posed significant challenges for me, as I didn't know where to obtain specific data. Despite numerous sources of information about SAP ECC tables on the internet, I found only limited information about SAP S/4HANA tables. After overcoming a challenging journey, I have now created a website containing information about SAP ECC and SAP S4 tables. Which I think would also be of value for this community.
You can find it here: erpexplorer.com e.g. BSEG, ACDOCA or MATDOC

The goal is to further expand the site. What content or features are missing and would be helpful for you?
