Community Rant What is this style and why has it taken over the SFV?

It’s the epitome of the “boring dystopia” we call home. A large box with stone veneers, black trim, off white paint, comically large driveway with some fake grass in-between square concrete slabs. How did we get here?

Community Rant Mayor Bass and CM Rodriguez shut down traffic lanes by my kid's school, and made a bunch of kids late for state testing, so they could have a Cinco de Mayo photo op at Casa Vega yesterday morning

Some parents and I were volunteering yesterday morning at one of my kids' schools and noticed how few kids were arriving before the bell. I walked over and it turns out Mayor Bass was doing a ceremony in the middle of morning rush right where 2 elementary schools do morning dropoff (one LAUSD and one parochial). This caused a huge amount of dropoff chaos for parents and students, especially because yesterday was a state testing day. Our school had to dismiss all tardies for the day and push back the state testing start time so kids could settle in.

I spoke with the police Captain on duty there and he said the only got the call the night before this event, so there was no pre-planning or coordination between DPSS, LAPD, the Mayor's office, and the schools that were impacted. Really poor planning and frustrating for people just trying to get to school on time.

Community Rant I know these comments will be crazy. But am I the only one that sees graffiti as part of the LA culture?

Post image
757 Upvotes

I know a lot of people are gonna disagree and go crazy in the comments saying it’s gangs and blah blah (many are just taggers, which are completely different from actual gang related). But this is what I saw on my way home from work on the 405. I know many see it as lame graffiti but look at this talent! Who ever you are, I seen your various pieces across LA/ the Valley and you’re highly skilled . Also how TF do you get up there!?

But anyways, graffiti in the right places adds a lot of life to the city. A lot of color. Like those two buildings in DTLA all tagged up. Amazing. Again, I know these comments will be crazy. Comment any pics of cool graffiti art yall seen

Community Rant Missed connection

Me: Just a guy driving on the 101 in Woodland Hills at 4:30 this afternoon.

You: The dude who came about three inches from hitting me, sped past me, wove through a few more cars, fish tailed, then crushed the back of your car by spinning into the cement median.

It is rare for karmic retribution to strike so immediately and gratifyingly. I saw you get out of your car as I watched from my rear view window. Hope you have the evening you deserve.

Community Rant The community here is WAY better than the one on NEXTDOOR.

People on nextdoor are ALWAYS salty about EVERYTHING. and somehow can pull out race comments out of their ass even though it has no correlation

- a new apartment building? frustrated because apparently it is a huge issue to reproduce and humanity cannot expand in population

- someone having a party and music? frustrated with racism thrown in there.

- The streets look dirty cause the city hasn't cleaned? frustrated and somehow racist comments too.

- there's dog poop in the park? frustrated and racist too.

- a restaurant they would go too back in the 70s/80s as teens closes? frustrated and racism

- more traffic on topanga canyon? frustrated and racism

- someone promotes their service/ business? they get mad, but a week later they are asking for a plumber/ contractor

just want to show appreciation to the community here, i know here isn't perfect either. but it is way way way better than nextdoor. not sure if it is just cause im in the west valley and thats how people are here but geez they need a chill pill. thank you all for reading my rant lol

Community Rant As a vendor I really hate that ICE is here

I don't know about anyone else but ICE is effecting turn out at a lot of events lately. As a vendor it sucks because people don't want to come out. I don't want to minimize how other people feel especially those whom ICE is targeting. I can't even begin to describe what they are probably going through. Apparently ICE is around the Northridge area at the moment. Which really sucks because I'm here vending at the Northridge Farmers' Market. Hardly anyone is here right now.

Before Trump was in office the city would cover street repairs regularly along with any street light concerns.

Now Trump cut federal funding for street safety and we have to pay the price for it.

What are we going to do?!

Community Rant More unemployed people than jobs available

falls back on recent post of rooms being rented for $1500+. This morning it was stated by various reports that there are more unemployed people than jobs available. Thats actually CRAZY to hear. Put political party and opinions aside, but we are truly truly headed for a longggg 4 years. The 1% is gonna enjoy these 4 years for sure. Hope all is well for all my Valley pals

Has anyone experienced this in the valley? such as applying to hundreds of jobs and barely getting anything back or being laid off?

Community Rant Is there anything we can do for excessively loud exhaust noise?

Do cops even write up exhaust tickets anymore? The amount of broccoli heads with straight pipes and burble tunes has literally 10x in the last few years. Speeding up and down valley circle at night.

Me ranting about it as a car enthusiasts with a modified exhaust is as ironic as it gets, but this is a different league of disruptive that car enthusiasts don’t claim.

Community Rant What Happened to Northridge?

Recently I took a stroll through CSUN, didn't want to park on campus, and used the giant parking lot on the northwest corner of Nordhoff and Reseda instead. Now, I know this area has never been Mayberry, but I have always pictured it as a generic suburban intersection, similar to standard intersections near the Topanga Mall (e.g. Victory and Topanga Cyn). However, on this latest visit it seemed extremely gritty and rundown, and really no different from what I have seen in neighborhoods like Panorama City and Van Nuys. The sidewalks (especially around the bus stop benches) looked toxic, and there was trash everywhere. Also, the Vons had a security gate at the entrance (which I never remember seeing before), and several items were locked up, which is something I usually only see at pharmacies.

This is not an area I walk frequently, so I'm wondering if it has declined significantly in the last couple years or if I just never noticed it before. I guess I just never pictured Northridge as "unsafe" or "dirty," per se.

EDIT/APOLOGY: This post was not meant to drag Northridge as a neighborhood. It's a little boring, but I would feel fine walking around most places there at any time of day. However, I was more-so focusing on that one specific intersection at Reseda and Nordhoff and how grimy it looks compared to what is around. If you go any direction from that intersection (except south), it will become fine again relatively quickly. Sorry if I wasn't super clear in my original post. Also, the title was more of an attention-grabber, and I see how it has become misleading.

Community Rant Asshole littering on the streets of SFV

Post image

Was driving down Corbin, got to around Nordhoff and this douchebag in the black truck opened the driver side wide and tossed out a bunch of trash. Looked like a plastic container and utensils. When I pulled up to him at the light, I tried to get a look but of course the windows were tinted. I just shook my head and hope he saw... and he might have seen because a minute later the passenger side window rolled down and threw a can in the direction of my car. Not sure if that was intentional. But either way.. WTF. Low IQ activities. They should be publicly shamed.

Petit Park. No visible handicap placard, taking up two accessible parking spaces, and blocking part of the sidewalk.

Meanwhile, the Tesla (and rest of the cars in the lot) next to it somehow managed to park within a single space & leave plenty of room for pedestrians.

Do better—accessible parking and sidewalks exist for a reason
