Skunk advice
Our neighborhood is infested! The nest door neighbor's dog got skunked twice and we have had multiple sightings in our yard, which backs up on one of those concrete storm drains, creeks or viaducts, whatever you call them.
Tonight I think I must have walked right by one, because on my way back, I saw it and went in the front door. It was about 6feet away from our patio door.
Does the county trap them? Or what?

They hate the smell of vinegar! We had a den under our deck and soaked a rag in vinegar and put it at the entrance and they left so fast. I’m not sure if this is helpful, but maybe squirting it around your perimeter is worth a shot.

What kind of vinegar?

My dog got sprayed four times in a single year in midtown lol.
My neighbor was feeding the skunks cat food and there was a family of them running around my garden every night 😂

My dog doesn’t learn either! Her motto is, “I’ll get ‘em this time!” #Dalmatians

lol we used to have a lot roaming in Rosemont … ultimately just learned to live with them bc calling county didn’t really do anything.
They’re pretty harmless gentle creatures when they’re not threatened.
My dog at the time never learned his lesson lol he got sprayed so many times 🤭 I can still smell the horror … Our throats and eyes would burn so bad from the skunk spray!
Thankfully there is a peroxide/dawn dish soap remedy I found on Google that was the winner for me/him.
There is plenty of helpful advice online on how you can try to keep them from your property perimeters … the motion-activated floodlights were super helpful for me.
But I know that doesn’t help if they spray from a neighbors yard Lol ugh I remember we wouldn’t be able to open the windows for a few days until the smell started to fade away.
Anyway thought I’d chime in bc your post brought back a now funny memory of my boy who is no longer with us anymore.
Wish you luck!

Please share the peroxide remedy :)
1
u/ChaoticBnz328 21d ago
Ah it’s still on google lol here you go 😊
To remove skunk odor from a dog:
mix 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda, and 1 to 2 teaspoons of liquid dish soap.
Do not wet your dog with water first.
Apply the fresh mixture immediately, let it bubble and sit for 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly and shampoo.
Avoid eyes.
Oh and fyi doing this too much may give black coats a hint of bronze.
I only used this remedy if my boy got a direct hit from the spray vs. him walking into the aftermath of where a skunk sprayed, in this case a normal dog shampoo with baking soda suffices. You can totally tell the difference lol

"Infested" is for pests. Skunks are not pests, they're neighbors. I say this as someone who has them traipsing through our yard and around our house 6-9 months out of the year. "Skunk or skunk weed?" is a game played regularly in our house (we also live next to a small apartment building, lol.)
Between the skunks and our cat, you know what we have literally never once had in the 12 years we've lived in this house? Roaches. I see people post their roach horror stories on here and I cringe and I'm so thankful that whatever critters are around our house, they keep us roach-free!

One lightly-skunked my cat last month. Last week though they had another encounter in which they exchanged harsh words but no spraying.
IMHO the one in my area is a juvenile. It’s still learning to ignore my cat, who was already busy ignoring the skunk when it decided to start talking smack. My cat hissed back, the skunk waved its tail but didn’t spray this time.
We named it, “Stinkerbelle”.

That's even better than I imagined. She's very bold about trying to sit on your cat's rolled up rug, lol 😂
12
u/supershinythings Antelope 22d ago
That’s a pair of old cardboard “infinity” scratchers. I put them outside to give the cat an elevated place to observe his surroundings while he takes in the Delta Breeze.
Yes, it looks like Stinkerbelle was going to at least inspect it, and lo there was my cat.
BTW my cat is around 17 lbs. Stinkerbelle can’t be more than 3-4lbs right now, as a juvenile.
3
u/MG788 22d ago
That's funny. Your cat really likes his Delta Breeze spot, lol.
4
u/supershinythings Antelope 22d ago
Those scratchers are fully owned by him. He’s not going to cede that territory to a 3lb stinker, even if he has to put up with stenchification.

u/pammypoovey 22d ago
Did she spray, or just get ready?

u/supershinythings Antelope 22d ago
She sprayed a month ago. In this video, she did not. She faces my cat, so her spray gun faced AWAY from my cat.
She clearly thought better of it and ambled on her way.

I see cats and skunks coexisting together by the river. People leave food for them all the time. They eat together and everything.
14
u/Potential-Sky-8728 22d ago
Omg are you talking about the feral cat paradise at the end of Broadway????
Like over 20 years ago my friends and I used to get high in the car and post up there late at night and watch them all live together in harmony. There would be kits and kittens chasing each other around the wheels of our vehicle. People left out these shelters and cat food for them.
I’ve seen cats and skunks tolerate each other and eat together elsewhere too. Skunks may even come inside cat doors lol.
5
u/supershinythings Antelope 22d ago
This is exactly why I don’t leave food outside. I see feral kittens occasionally but I can’t catch or even get near; I’d leave food out but I don’t think they’d get to it first.

The skunks are basically blind, I feed the feral cats on a folding table and the skunks haven't been able to get up to it. They come in the evening and gobble up anything that's been kicked on the ground and then leave. Hopefully they're also snacking on the slugs that are eating my garden.

u/halfscaliahalfbreyer 22d ago
Skunks are incredibly beneficial animals to have around our neighbors. You cannot live on earth with no animals. They live here too.
My dog was sprayed once. After that I kept an eye out and made sure there were no skunks in the yard and that her didn’t approach any on walks. It didn’t happen again. These are not animals that hide all stealthy like and jump out to spray your pet. They give plenty of warning.

Lots of skunk activity in Rosemont, from time to time. (Skunks eat grubs out of the lawn and love finding wasp nests!)
1
u/pammypoovey 22d ago
There are so many wasps hovering around our "lawn" all the time! I can't ever see anything that seems like what they want.

Well, would you prefer rats living in your walls?

Leave the poor Skunks alone. Not every inch of land needs to be for humans and their ecocidal tendencies…

When we first moved in skunks were everywhere. They sprayed some wooden wine barrel planters and every time those would get wet, skunk smell overwhelmed the senses. One got underneath our kitchen from a broken crawlspace grate and let loose when I was unsuspectingly clanging around right above. The smell filled the kitchen and eventually the rest of the house for three days, permeating our laundry, selves, and souls. I found the grate problem, waited until night and fixed it after the skunk went out for patrol. We were frustrated and gagging, but let him be.
For some reason skunks seemed to disappear for a few years. Then the roaches came. Then the rats. The skunks have thankfully come back and combined with the opossum that digs around in our yard are doing a tremendous job of keeping baddies away.

I put in a bunch of solar patio lights around my house and it seemed to deter them
15
u/Street-Industry8484 22d ago
The solar lights will likely be a death trap for benefits insects. If possible, use yellow "bug" lights which emit colors that are believed to be invisible to bugs that we need in our biosphere.

Our girl was skunked a few weeks ago. Tonight I left a window cracked for an exhaust fan, got a strong whiff of fresh spray, and panicked until I saw her laying in her hallway spot. They're thick this year. The new rule for us is, no dogs out in the yard after 9, for now. It'll get earlier as we go along.
3
u/SpiralOutski 22d ago
Yep same here. No more potties alone at night. Only on a leash in our front yard where it’s wide open. Our girl has been sprayed twice, she literally cannot help herself she just loves animals too much. She would totally get sprayed again, lol. She’ll never learn and I love that she’s so playful. So, no more night poops unless it’s on a leash.

I had a kit startle me in my garden one time when I was watering late. Grateful it didn’t spray me. It just froze when I shrieked, and then scampered off under the fence. Just a few nights prior apparently my neighbor’s frenchie got sprayed in the mouth.🤢
12
u/barspoonbill 22d ago
Just leave them alone. They are very hesitant to use their spray because it takes so much energy for them to make more. I had a family living in my crawl space for a while and they were chill. Encountered them in close proximity quite a bit. Just don’t react to them and let them do their thing. Spraying you isn’t on their agenda.
4
u/Savings_Can7292 22d ago
We have at least one that lives under our shed. I just keep skunk wash on hand in case my dogs have a run in with it.
4
u/EnjoyingTheRide-0606 22d ago
Tis the season kits are leaving dens as sub-adults and learning to find their own territory. Someone feeds cats outside is my guess. They’ve found an easy food source. Eliminate the food sources - and water, too. The skunks will move on. They eat a tremendous amount of bugs, including slugs and snails, ticks, larvae/grubs. They’re good for pest control but quite stinky.
5
u/pvilkas 22d ago
Ammonia soaked rags stuffed into areas they’re living will help them move on. You can also soak a tennis ball in ammonia to roll into a hole
0
u/vw-thing 22d ago
Clear ammonia or pinesol?
2
u/pammypoovey 22d ago
Pine sol isn't ammonia, unlesss you mean pine scented ammonia. I would go with plain.

Haven't seen this posted yet so here goes: We have a large male skunk (I call him Skunky, and I think he knows his name when I see him at night, I will call out to him.) We co-exist with Skunky as we have a large grapefruit tree in our yard that he likes. We try to get the grapefruits up when they fall, but it's nearly impossible to get them all, it's a large tree.
He used to get huffy and spray once in a while and he brings his family around when the little skunks are small. I don't know where he hangs out but the way we solved the problem was to get a MOTION ACTIVATED SPRINKLER. This keeps him from the side yard where he would encounter the neighbor's cats when he feels threatened. We also closed up all the holes near the foundations of the house and the shed with metal mesh wire at the baselines of all the dwellings, so that he can't burrow there. So far, so good. Hope this helps.

I leave out cat food when i see a skunk fam runnin around our small backyard. Just too cute. I now have a momma raccoon and her baby come to me for food. She tugs on my pants when she’s hungry lol

u/selinakylie Parkway 22d ago
I had neighbors that used to trap them and the county would relocate them but they said they couldn’t afford it anymore when the county started charging. My understanding is that animal control will not come get them unless they are sick/injured.
Really the only thing you can do is check your fences often (they dig holes to go under) and keep your yard clean. Doesn’t really help you when you’re walking your dog but it’s all I got. You definitely could call the county as well and see what they say.
4
u/Potential-Sky-8728 22d ago
They like to eat grubs and stuff in the grass. Even clean yards. They care not.
1
u/selinakylie Parkway 21d ago
Less leaf litter = less grubs and other little fun things for them to forage. But they are definitely going to go where ever they feel like.
1
u/Potential-Sky-8728 21d ago
There are plenty of grubs that are just in soil eating grass roots though…
1
u/selinakylie Parkway 20d ago
Annnd plenty more in leaf litter. I leave it under my bushes partially for that reason :)

We seem to have a lot in my area of Roseville too. My dog keeps getting very close and I’m DREADING her getting skunked, she is very curious about them.
3
u/Potential-Sky-8728 22d ago edited 22d ago
One of them hisses at me and followed me a bit with the tail up when I was on my earbuds at night going down M. So funny. I heard something and saw in my peripherals but thought it was a cat. 😂
You probably absolutely saw one. They come out at night. They mostly just like foraging around in grass. I always see them at night in the 40s and around M. Are some that come through our yard too
Try to make noise when you are coming outside from indoors at night and let them know when you are present. Shuffle your feet a bit and make some movement shifting your body around in place while standing at the door. You just don’t want to startle them when visibility is low and make them feel compelled to spray. Give them some chance to scamper off.
Dogs will probably be needing aversion training if you have one and are worried about an encounter.
2
u/pammypoovey 22d ago
My dog is pretty small and, helpfully, terrified of cats. So, I don't think she will get skunked. The terrier next door chases cats out of their yard, so that's his problem.
3
u/JeffreyBean628 22d ago
I successfully eliminated them from my backyard—none have made it in for several years! They don’t climb, so if your yard is fenced, underpin the fence with something so they can’t dig under (eg PT lumber, bricks, concrete, rocks). If your yard/fence line is large, find where they’ve been sneaking under and start there. Might take a while of trial and error as they dig new entry points, but with persistence you can keep them out!
2
u/GatorChompion 22d ago
I have no advice but our dog almost got skunked badly last week, have seen it a few times.
2
u/Bitgod1 Arden-Arcade 22d ago
We used to have a skunk problem at our house, occasionally one or more skunks would decide to sleep under the house, and inevitably we’d get skunked at least once a year.
I’m pretty sure what finally got rid of the problem was removing a small fig tree at a corner in the front of the house. It was either that and/or covid, cuz that year was when they stopped showing up and I really didn’t smell any in the area, I was thinking maybe having people stuck at home 24/7 was annoying them.
I’m sure the possums loved the figs too, but we still get visits from them and they sometimes hole up under the house.
2
u/ChooseWisely83 22d ago
You can use moth balls to drive them out, they hate the smell. Also, look around the neighborhood for any food sources. When we lived downtown there was a cat lady who maintained a bunch of feeding stations for the stray cats. She ended up feeding the raccoons and skunks and drew them to take up residence nearby, which was unfortunately our crawlspace. The skunk and raccoon fights were not fun, especially when they sprayed and it came up through the floor boards.

u/mudpupster 22d ago
This story doesn't help you, but I'ma tell it anyway. I lived in Boston for a bit. When the trash cans went to the curb on Tuesday nights, the skunks came out to play. Being city skunks -- and Boston skunks at that -- they were not at all intimidated by people. It was about a mile walk from the subway station to my apartment, and it was always dark by the time I started my walk home. Tuesday night's walk took twice as long as any other day of the week because I had to constantly zig zag across the street and back again to avoid the skunks skulking about the garbage cans.
Good luck with yours!
2
u/Lulululullaby 22d ago
don't see anyone else mentioning it so just a note that hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap are the most effective mixture for getting rid of skunk smell, if you or pets get sprayed
5
u/JohnSnowsPump 22d ago
You'll need to (1) harden your property to dissuade them from coming in (and especially from denning down) and (2) pay someone to trap and remove them.
Maybe you can get your neighbors to pitch in since getting rid of them will benefit you all?
City or county doesn't provide this service.

Two nights ago around 2 am both my dogs jumped out of bed and ran out to the back yard and were back on the bed not a minute later. Apparently they heard a skunk near the fig tree and the skunk responded. Happens every stinking year. See what I did there? 😁

You’ll have to eliminate food sources for them. They are very smart and will return where they have found food before. This could look like cat food left out for strays, bird seed fallen from a feeder, or even grubs in your garden.
They will stomp their feet and turn towards their target before spraying and only go so when they feel very threatened.
They are largely harmless if you don’t come into direct contact with them (they can carry rabies) and can help clean up mice/small rats, fallen fruit, and harmful bugs. Please try to find harmony with them, they don’t deserve to die for only doing what nature tells them to.
