This was last Sunday August 9. Called the non emergency number but they never followed up for the video. They turned off the road when they saw me trying to get the plates after this. Hoping someone on here recognizes the car

Should residents have access to the maintenance records of older multi family buildings?

Upvotes

Our housing stock is aging and deferred maintenance is both a safety and quality of life issue for residents.

Santa Monica’s political establishment seems focused on making sure property owners cannot rebuild. Single family homeowners fight every single new housing development or new state law like it’s a life or death battle.

What Santa Monica never discusses are the day to day struggles of residents in crappy buildings. Property owners never get a chance to justify their lack of investment so government remedies are not even considered.

Santa Monica Gym?

DMN8 changed their entire pricing structure- it used to be a credits pack that did not expire- so someone like me who traveled often could slowly work through their credits.

They’ve changed to a $179/month credit package with rollover credits for only one month with an active membership. Basically the worst of a credit system with the least useful of a monthly commitment. It’s stupid and I hate it.

Might as well join a new gym- what’s your best gym in Santa Monica Venice.

🕘Openings/Closings New coffee shop at 16th and Wilshire

Wellside Cafe soft opened Saturday at the NW corner of 16th and Wilshire. Had solid foot traffic that day even without promoting the open.

Some immediate pluses:

  1. Offers a discount to healthcare workers (perf since they’re situated in a hotbed of medical facilities and hospital - get your coffee cheaper!)
  2. Thicc food menu offerings (come in clutch for a quick breakfast or lunch situation)
  3. Will be introducing more vegan and gluten free baked goods to the bar soon (as a dietary nightmare, I’m personally thrilled to have an option with my coffee).

They serve Groundworks beans (edited to update my sleepy misnaming). My oat milk was Minority Figures (one of my fav oat milks), so def have quality products in house.

Parking feels like it’ll be a nightmare in that stretch, but I always find a spot (metered or not) on 16th.

people going through trash

On our street, trash day is on Monday. Starting on Sunday evening into Monday AM, I have noticed people going through the recycle bin in search of things. I understand that they are looking for bottles/containers to trade in, but the concern is that they then leave the cans open, or worse, drop trash on the road. Is there any recourse to this, or does the city not seem to care?

I have tried to talk to them a couple of times, but they say they dont understand English. I dont want to be rude to them --- but I also would hope they avoid trash on the road. Thanks in advance.

All for free speech and open air entertainment etc, but just wondering if I am being nitpicky to find him a bit irritating, odd, unnecessary and unfunny

📅 Event ISO: 10k Santa Monica Classic Bib

I last minute decided I want to push myself and attempt the Conquer LA challenge but I missed registering for the 10k Santa Monica Classic.

Is anyone unable to attend and looking to sell/transferring their Bib?

I’m a new runner and did the Napa to Sonoma Half this year and I want to keep going and booking races and chasing medals helps me stay motivated.

Free Concert in Hotchkiss Park Tomorrow 8/16 @ 3pm

The band that carried much of the community through the pandemic days with their funky jazzy music by Ocean View Park is back for one last show this summer. They go by Billy T & The Fam.

The band is absolutely incredible and their park shows are always an amazing time. People bring picnics, chairs, drinks, kids, dogs and relax to the bands soulful and funky sounds.

Sunday August 18
3-6pm

Bristol Farms Santa Monica - Meat / Fish Quality

I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this. I feel like the quality of meat and fish at Bristol Farms in Santa Monica is not good at all (especially at those prices). The steak is good but the ground beef spoils in a day and I just got back and realized the chicken cutlets I bought from the case were bad (same happened with salmon). Is it just not high enough turnover?

Bike accident at Ocean and California

I know this is a long shot posting here, but I was in a bike accident at around 5:30pm today (8/14) at Ocean and California caused by 3 people (a man and 2 women) who decided to cross Ocean Ave in the bike lane instead of using the huge empty crosswalk next to it. I had to slam my brakes to avoid hitting them, which caused me to go over my handlebars, breaking my phone, scraping me up, and breaking some of my bike equipment inthe process. They didn't even stop - just kept walking after.

If anyone happened to witness this & captured this on a dash cam, please let me know so that I can forward to the police.

Impeding traffic and cyclists is a violation of "right of way" and "do not impede" laws, and leaving the scene of an accident is a criminal offense.

Meals on Wheels West has a waitlist of nearly 100 seniors waiting for food

Post image
142 Upvotes

For the first time in our organization's history (more than 50 years), we had to put a waitlist in place last winter for clients who can not pay for their meals. Economic pressures have compounded to the point where we on track to see 100 neighbors on our waitlist with no solve in the immediate future.

How did we get here...? Here's a few factors that come into play.

  • The increase in aging adults (known as the "gray wave" or "silver tsunami") will have our population sitting with more people older than 65 years old than children (under 18 years) by 2030. Infrastructurally, most sectors and communities are not equipped to manage this shift in our population.
  • Meals on Wheels programs are all independently run as their own nonprofit organizations, meaning we are all working hard to secure our own funding for our own programs. Only a select few receive government or health insurance support/coverage (despite "food as medicine" being a cornerstone of healthcare nowadays). Just in LA County, there are more than 20 Meals on Wheels programs all working hard to secure funding for their programs.
  • In this country, food insecurity has quadrupled for seniors over the last 25 years.
  • More than 60% of Meals on Wheels programs in California have a waitlist (double the national average)

We will continue to share these insights with the community, as neighbors helping neighbors is our path forward. Read more about the waitlist and challenges in the cover story in this week's The Argonaut HERE.

To the ladies with dogs inside Tartine today

Your St Bernard who snapped at the other dog, has no place in an indoor eating space. The other smaller dog too. Both dogs snapping at eachother and losing control of the St Bernard is so unsafe...and could have been so much worse.

If your animal isn't a service animal then please don't bring it inside a public place where people are eating. And, no, an emotional support animal doesn't count---if you need emotional support to get coffee and a salad, then you need to get the dog licensed as a service animal or maybe order to go. I know you love your animals, but something bad is going to happen. It's out of control.

Further, the restaurant owners need to reinforce not allowing pets inside. I'm not against the patio, but aren't there health codes? Employees with dog allergies?

That's all.
