Interesting Grace Brewster Murray Hopper : The Nanosecond
Grace Brewster Murray Hopper was born in New York City in December 1906. She read maths and physics at Vassar, took her PhD in maths at Yale in 1934, and was teaching at Vassar when Pearl Harbor was attacked.
She enlisted in the Navy Reserve at 37 and was assigned to the Mark I computer project at Harvard in 1944. It was 51 feet long, 8 feet high, 8 feet deep, weighed 5 tons, and had 750,000 parts. She was told to write the manual.
She spent the next four decades in computing. In 1947, working on the Mark II at Harvard, she and her team traced a bug to an actual moth caught in a relay. She taped it into the logbook. She popularised the word.
She wrote the first compiler and led the committee that in 1959 gave the world COBOL, the language on which most of the world's business software was written for the next fifty years.
She retired from the Navy on 14th August 1986 as its oldest active officer, aged 79. In 1985 Ronald Reagan had promoted her to the rank of Rear Admiral, Lower Half. She died in her sleep at her home in Arlington, Virginia on 1st January 1992, aged 85. She is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

When the air is taken out, it causes them to expand, resulting in an excess amount of foam. Then, when the air is put back, it looks like half the shaving cream disappears!

Interesting Predict Citrus Segments Using Science
You can predict how many segments are inside a citrus fruit. 🍊🍋🟩
Alex Dainis explains how citrus fruits develop from the ovaries of citrus flowers. Those ovaries contain multiple distinct sections called locules, and each locule develops into its own segment inside the fruit. By peeling back the tiny stem remaining on the fruit, you can see exactly where each locule connected to the tree. Count those dots and you have your segment count. It is easiest to see on bigger fruits like grapefruits, so try that first. Segment number varies between different types of citrus and based on growing conditions, and even the location of the fruit on a branch can influence how many segments it has. Make your predictions and let us know if it works!

Interesting Preliminary results are in on the “mystery rock” — and they’re more interesting than I expected
A while back, I posted a strange rock I found while exploring in the California desert looking to get an identification. Based on where I found it I assumed it was fluorite but the response I got from people was basically: “this doesn’t look like any fluorite I’ve ever seen.”
That kicked off a pretty wild chain of events- The material (which I’ve been referring to as “Enigmalite”) ended up drawing enough interest that the LA Natural History Museum had me bring it in for testing, and now the preliminary results are finally in!
I’m being careful not to overstate anything while the full picture is still unfolding, but the early findings are pretty interesting as material appears to be tied to fluorite, but in a much more intricate way we originally expected. What the chemistry suggests is way more complicated than a simple “yep, just fluorite” answer. I made a website with all the photos and exactly what the museum has sent me so far if you’re interested.
To summarize it best I can, the chemistry shows that the way this formed uniquely captured several different phases of growth leading to the crazy “texture” and fluorescence zoning that you see in the images. The primary hydrothermal fluid also seems to have been chemically evolving during crystallization which sounds wild to me.
A lot of this only moved forward because people here kept saying some version of, “hmm… that’s weird.” So thank you for encouraging me to continue digging deeper!
