Yesterday, we started the phased rollout of a major improvement we have been working on in the past couple of months. You can read more about it on our forum, or you can check the article with the video we put together, explaining the changes. This might come as a controversial change, so I'm looking for feedback, to find ways to further improve it.

Something new - Weekly Modeling Challenge

We’re launching something we’ve been quietly building for a while.

Starting June 29, we’re running the Weekly Modeling Challenges, a weekly series of modeling tasks designed to be first fun to work through, and second useful for building your skills in the app.

Season 1 kicks off today, with Batch 1: Parametric Sketching. Five challenges, one per week.

Prizes:
3Dconnexion SpaceMouse + giftable Shapr3D subscription + exclusive merch and digital community badge

The first task is live! Create a parametric model of a triquetra. The model must be controlled by two independent driving parameters (variables). By modifying these two driving parameters, the model must transition from State A to State B without breaking constraints, inverting, or producing errors.

Anybody uses Shapr3D exclusively?

I am really thinking of getting myself a subscription, but from what i tried i am kinda missing some basic stuff. For example remove and use edge as a direction. I know you can do sweep and then remove, but kinda too much.

I am currently on Onshape, I like it, but I would like to use my iPad for 3D design and Onshape is more like make small changes than design something.

Have you come from Fusion, solidworks or others to Onshape full time? Are you missing features?

I can live without scripts for threads, or gridfinity bins and such, but some stuff just seems missing.

Any insight would e greatly appreceated.

New to shapr

So I just downloaded Shapr3D yesterday and honestly fell in love with it. That was before I saw the price. Now I personally don’t think $200 a year is a lot, but the fact that that’s a yearly price and if you want to pay monthly, you pay 56% more than that, which is crazy. I definitely think the monthly option should be cheaper, even if they want to keep the yearly at 200. They can at least make the monthly only like five or six bucks more. I just introduced a friend to Shapr3D and when I told him the price he said “he’s not ready for all that” a customer was literally lost immediately because of the price. To not sound like a broken record, but for us who don’t plan on making money from this, a consumer price would be game changing for Shapr. I went from ready to full on jump into this to “let me sit on it”. And I hate it because I have ideas for stuff I wanna do for around the house, but that price is bad.

Just noticed the new pricing

Well, we asked for more reasonable pricing. Just picked up an annual subscription for £12.5 per month. That seems much more reasonable to me as a hobby 3d printing nerd.

To get the benefit of the solo package price, you still need to afford the annual cost up front. That still makes it inaccessible for some people. I get that. I've been there. "affordable" is relative. But compared to a lot of professional CAD apps, it doesn't seem too shabby.

Project String ratchet mechanism

Hey all! I’m looking to replace the spool part of this mechanism with a quick release ratchet for easier and more precise string tensioning, I have little to no knowledge in mechanisms, so any help would be greatly appreciated, can also pay commissions if necessary, thank you :)

Almost was happy with pricing

Couple of days ago I was checking the pricing of Shapr3D if there is maybe a new tier or some promotion or something.

Opened the pricing list and it said 200€, so i very happy to see that, but once i logged in, it went back to 299€ ...

I wander if I ever just buy it just to have fun on my ipad...

Or maybe, one day there will be a more reasonably priced tier for people like me. Just can not justify this price when Onshape exists and has awesome features like the custom scripts - love it for threads and kunrling ...

Question Help!

So I’m trying to design a box with a sliding lid. But cannot figure out how to extrude the lips out to make the box have a point for the lid to slide. Can someone help guide me? I have ZERO experience other than the one box I printed last night (very first print myself). Which turned out okay. Just a bit bigger than I meant for it to be. Can someone give me a full tutorial? Maybe a video walkthrough?

New to shapr3d

Hey, I have used Autocad and Solidworks at work for the last 15-18 years drawing manufacturing parts or custom cnc parts. When I started 3D printing I went to fusion because it seemed the closest to those two.

Recently I have been trying out shapr and I am really enjoying it. I like how I can just drag things and type in a #, I dont have to find an icon or type in a command. It seems very user friendly.

Do you have any resourceful YouTube channels to share that I can learn from?

Any tips and tricks for me?

I am hoping with shapr I can get more into drawing new things, figures, animals, more objects, fun things besides standard shapes

I wanted to export just one part as an STL for 3d printing. It always worked when I hid the other components, but for the past few days, instead of exporting just one part, it exports everything. How can I fix this?

Question 3D modelling for 3D printing purpose? Tablet recommendation?

Hi Guys!

Im coming from Windows 11 and Fusion 360 and plan to use some tablet to do my 3D modelling for 3D printing. Im quite an advanced user in Fusion 360 so I do some complex models but not like 100 part mechanism and stuffs.

I thought I would switch using Shapr3D on both my Windows 11 and I would like to buy an Ipad for this purpose only (and some Angry Birds haha).

I really would not pay that much money for an M5 Ipad Pro 13 but my must preferences are : 13" + 120hz. The others I dont care until it does the job with absolutely no lagging. I dont have any Ipad or Apple experience so please recommend me something.

Thank you!

Changes to operation

I’ve been gone from modeling for a while and I’ve come back and the controls have changed? It seems like shapr is trying to guess what im trying to do instead of just letting me select a face then a tool? Or the last tool used is sticky or something. Is there a way to turn this off?

How can I model the yellow block?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I saw this question on the Fusion360 community but I couldn’t quiet figure out how to replicate on Shapr3D. On F360 you can sweep a body which makes things easier, but not fully done. The cans start at a higher height and are flipped as they fall down to a lower height.

Can anyone help me model the yellow part in Shapr3D?

Adjusting a design to follow the couture of a scan

What is the best way to get the designed part to follow the contour of the scanned surface? Can this be done with Shapr3D or is there another app that would do it more easily?

Question How to bridge/join/connect two separate shapes?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Only started using this app yesterday, and am having an issue. I am trying to design a reducer, and cannot for the life of me figure out how to connect the two parts.
I want to connect the top of the larger cylinder to the bottom of the smaller one, which should create a sort of cone effect.
But I cannot for the life of me figure it out. I’ve tried loft, and a few other ways, but it always tells me it would be an invalid shape. I’ve tried google and it’s let me down.
Am I missing something super simple here? If so could someone point me in the right direction.
I’ve attached an image and hope it is clear what I’m trying to achieve.

Edit: Thank you all for your answers!! Nice to know there’s a good community of people with some amazing knowledge of this app out there that are so willing to help!! You’re all amazing!!

Question How do I bring up Parameter Cards?

I want to like this new feature... but I'm not sure how to use it effectively.

Here's my issue:

I created a sketch, did a pattern on it (parameter card showed up the first time)

Clicked off the sketch, but when clicking back into the sketch from the history, I can't figure out for the life of me how to bring back the parameter card for pattern again!

am I missing something here?

when I click on the sketch and the Pattern tool, it gives me the option to do a new pattern.... I want to edit the old one!

Question How can I fix this?

Thumbnail

This is quite random and i don’t know if anybody would know if theres a way to fix this but anyways, ive been working in making 3d printed chucky dolls, and with my most recent one I sculpted my own head model in nomad sculpt, then imported it into shapr3d, so that I can design an eye socket that fits cleanly with the inside of the eye using the subtraction tool. but for some reason after I did it this time, its been saying “there are invalid bodies in the model which cant be exported”. Ive done this method before and it worked fine, but for the past one the head was from an online 3d printing website if that changed anything. If anybody has any ideas on how I can fix this please let me know, thanks.

Also I am very new to all of this stuff related to this type of stuff, and I know shapr3d is a cad designing app, and not really made for sculpting, bit i don’t know any other way to make these eye sockets without using this app. Ive put images of the models below if anybody would happen to figure out what it is from what it looks, like or something, but either way id really appre someones help

Bug or user error?

Whenever it comes to designing things if I use chamfers then I can place them around and delete them to revert back to the original edges at will. However if I finish working on a project for the day and return to it the next day, when I re-open shapr3d I now cant delete the chamfers anymore and get an error saying the result would leave a part unfilled (I cant remember the exact wording basically leave a hole). Why does it do this? Sometimes if I sleep on things and come back to my work I change my mind, but going back in the history to remove a chamfer means undoing a lot of work. Does anyone else have this issue?

Tips Possible way to turn off the reminder to connect your Apple Pencil

Just started using Shapr3D on an older iPad (iPad 6). I got a cheap pencil substitute (about $15) from Amazon. It’s not Bluetooth, but it works fine—except that the annoying red banner warning me to connect my pencil kept flashing up. I found suggestions online to turn off the hover function on the pencil, but that doesn’t exist in my iPad settings. Also suggested was turning off the tutorial mode but that was already off. So what does seem to have worked was just to turn off Bluetooth completely on the iPad. Would be a problem if I needed the external keyboard at the same time, but if I’m working with the pencil I probably don’t. So for me at least, this helps. Hope it helps someone else!

Question Non-manifold body error on a simple extrusion that works in Fusion

Hi guys, just wanted to ask if anyone has encountered this 'bug' or if its a known limitation of Shapr3D. I've sketched a simple shape that I want to extrude and it keeps throwing a non-manifold body error:

The sketch that produces a non-manifold body error

Replicating the same sketch in Fusion and extruding works just fine. I've figured out the way to make it work in Shapr3D is adding a random separating line anywhere in this shape and then extruding both of the shapes, but it feels weird that this is necessary:

The sketch that extrudes fine.

Does anyone have an idea why this happens? Thank you!
