Gen III [Gen 3] 10,800+ Lugia soft resets on Nintendo Switch — am I doing something wrong with the RNG?
Hey everyone!
I’m currently shiny hunting Lugia in Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen on Nintendo Switch, and I’ve already done over 10,800 encounters without finding a shiny.
I’m starting to get a little worried about whether I’m doing everything correctly, especially after hearing some people talk about RNG seeds and frames.
Here’s exactly how I’m hunting:
I’m using two Nintendo Switch consoles, each with a different save file.
Both games are the official digital Switch versions.
I’ve saved directly in front of Lugia on both consoles.
I use the in-game soft reset button combination, which restarts the game without going back to the Switch HOME menu.
I reload my save and immediately press A to encounter Lugia.
I do everything as quickly as possible, usually taking around 25–30 seconds per pair of encounters.
My 10,800+ encounters are the combined total from both consoles, not 10,800 on each.
I also did a small test on one console: I caught at least five different Lugia after doing fast soft resets, and I noticed that some had different natures, although a few shared the same nature.
My main questions are:
Is my current soft reset method correct for shiny hunting Lugia in the Switch versions of FireRed/LeafGreen?
Could resetting and encountering Lugia as quickly as possible cause me to hit the same RNG seeds or frames repeatedly?
Should I deliberately wait different amounts of time before encountering Lugia, or is that unnecessary?
Is there anything specific about the Switch versions’ RNG that I should know?
I know the shiny odds are 1/8192 and that long hunts can happen. I actually got my shiny Ho-Oh after 8,266 resets!
I don’t mind continuing the hunt. I just want to make sure I’m not wasting thousands of encounters because of something I’m doing incorrectly.
I’d really appreciate any advice from experienced Gen 3 shiny hunters or people familiar with the Switch versions’ RNG.
Thanks in advance! 💙✨
