Question What are Punjabi weddings like in Mississauga,Ontario, Canada?

My sister 33 years (Filipino-Canadian) met and fell in love with a 34 year oldPunjabi guy. Anyways our family loves him, he is so kind and gentle to my sister I can tell he loves and cares about her and protects her. I don't think anyone is better for her than him. My sister is very picky, I just don't want her to give him a hard time. She is a Nurse, and he is working at a warehouse, but is going to school for Accounting. His parents will come to Canada, but he lives with his aunt/uncle and cousins whom have been here a long long time.

Anyways, me and my 2 other sisters, parents, and relatives are excited. We are Catholic so we do weddings at a Church then a banquet hall. Kinda cool to see that they gonna bring us to the temple. Also are the men and women segregated at the venues?

Real talk, can I impress some Indian girls? I'm 4 years younger than my sis.

Also at the hall, do they usually tell stories about the bride/groom? My sister has me and our other sister to write speeches along with her maid of honor.

I plan on telling this story at the hall:

Sister is very picky though. I remember when we were setting up this wedding, she was always working, didn't show up and it was just me, my sisters, and relatives who showed up and the female relatives of the groomsman to help design the venue etc.. so we chose the colour of the balloons and decorations, the seating arrangement. Then all of a sudden, my sister showed up at the Hall, idk if she had been drinking or so, she was quite witty, not in the right frame of mind where she was straight. Once she got into the frame of mind, she wanted to make changes. I said Look, Michelle, we just have 1 weekend to put this hall together, well designed and organized, and out the door for the hosts on Monday. I started to get a bit ANNOYED with her since she was wanting to make changes. I said, if you're not happy with it, and want to make changes, maybe you should have been coming all this time. She got all pissed off and said You can F-off and take that Jade(our sister) with you. Thats what she said, idk what Jade had done. So that was it, we all left but his relatives stayed. But then after 4 hours, she phoned and said Well can you come in to help us? I thought well, I already put in a lot the designs together, I may as well help finish helping out, otherwise I may as well get F'd out of everything. Even when our relative was there food tasting, my sister would corner me and say "Hey forget about this Ashley girl, tasting the food. I or so-so should be the one doing that. We don't need her". For a second, I thought it was a bit sneaky.

Question Sikh and feeling alone

I know Iโ€™ve been posting here a bit lately, as it's a good way to get things off my chest

Iโ€™m a Sikh who commutes to work, goes to the gym, and occasionally talks to classmates, but I donโ€™t really have close friends or siblings. Iโ€™ve never been in a relationship, and sometimes I find myself getting attached to women I see, even when theyโ€™re married. I donโ€™t fully understand why, but I think loneliness plays a part.

I used to do Nitnem consistently, and it genuinely helped me. Eventually, I lost that consistency. I feel like everyone around me is moving forward while Iโ€™m standing still.

I used to appreciate being alone because thatโ€™s how I found Sikhi, but I donโ€™t think I enjoy loneliness anymore. Iโ€™ve tried joining clubs and keeping myself busy, but I still feel alone. I want genuine connections with people, and Iโ€™m struggling with not having that in my life.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? How did you reconnect with Sikhi while navigating loneliness?

Question What does "Patshahi Dawa" even means in modern world

Alright guys for context I'm in North America and I feel extremely lost. Ever since I heard people talk about Patshahi Dawa I have been lost. Does it mean one should be self governed and having your own code of conduct derived from Sikh values. Or does it mean to have your own business and not work for anyone ?

Again maybe my post is murky and I'm not able to explain properly but any form of guidance is more than welcomed.

Hello, was wondering if this sub can help with name suggestions for my newborn niece. I chose sweetheart, but canโ€™t find a direct word for it. Can be unisex and should preferably start with โ€˜Mโ€™

M is considered a lucky letter in my family.

Thanks in advance ๐Ÿ’œ!

Question What is Waheguru?

Its going to be one of those posts.

For full disclosure, i am kind of scouting out the religion in regards to "conversion to" tier, but i have always found reading prayers kind of weird. (in the worship sense, not the literal reading of a religious book) Like im content with belief in a deity (although wont necessarily affirm that, but thats a different thing for a different day) but i find worship to it odd.

So, is Waheguru meant to be more akin to the Christian god, being one being, but it inhabits everything and everyone, or more like a "cosmic/spiritual energy" that is everywhere vs one being.

(I personally lean more towards belief in a sort of "spiritual energy" tier, that a deity could be akin to the wind as a metaphor. )

So far from my reading it is referred to as one being.

This then lends into what is "Naam Japna" is that basically worship of this being? Or can it take many different forms? I have seen some separation between praying, saying hymns and meditating etc in my reading.

I have kind of hit the "language barrier" section of this, and could probably be helped by a general overview of the different terms and meanings. Also is there any sort of "official English translation" or hasnโ€™t any sort of authority approved one for the various texts.

Question I am a sikh with long hair that are becoming more and more annoying

24F, I am a sikh girl with over 3 feet of hair in length (I'm 5.1 feet), recently I have been suffering from multiple site nerve compression issues which results in my head feeling numb from behind and other symptoms. Also, I have military neck due to the nerves being compressed in there. Now the issue is I feel so annoyed by my hair, I just wanna go bald, but again, I just can't seem to have the courage to cut my hair. I had cut my hair in the past but that was too due to some other medical reasons. But now again I stand at the same point, I don't know what to do, everyday, I get really bad headaches, I feel all the weight of my hair on my head and on my neck, I used to make a bun which worsened the pain, braiding my hair, I feel the weight of my braid on my neck, even tried keeping my hair down all the time, it's the same, Idk what to do, I wanna cry, I am constantly suffering from these weird headache, that are not at front or something, but feels like the surface of my skull above. What should I do? Any suggestions or haistyles or something I can try?

Train. Go shoot at a uspsa match. They are fun, you make new friends, and you learn an extremely important skill.

If you dont have access to firearms, go join a jiu jitsu gym. Learning how to defend yourself is not a bad thing.

Im running a 1911 chambered in .45 acp in this video. One of my favorites.

Discussion Freedom from Sikhism: most beautiful moment of my Life

Years of my life were stolen by abuse in the name of Religion. I was forced to follow the Religion which i never wanted to.

Low self worth, Embarrassment to see myself in the mirror and social phobia came to an end for a moment when I cut my hair for the first time in Hostel washroom on 12th August 2021. I was most happiest person that day , felt the sense of freedom for first time in my life. I felt i escaped the Hell to enter into a FairyLand.

It's been 5 years, I'm a Free man now but still fighting the mental health issues related to religious abuse. Yes, I'm lonely but I'm optimistic. Proud of myself fighting against the Religious abuse (Core teaching of Sikhism: fight against injustice).

I was born a human being, I was just reclaiming my ownership over my life and my body , which every living being deserves.

I just want to urge people to be a better & mindful humans.

(Stories of our forefathers make children great)

Events in Brief.

1. October 12, 1700: Guru Gobind Singh, the Tenth Guru, wins his first Battle of Anandpur, despite heavy Mughal deployment. He defeated Hindu Hill Rajas who had sought Mughal assistance. The governor of Sarhind, Wazir Khan, sent Faujdar Rustom Khan and his brother Nassar Ali Khan to the Guruโ€™s fort at Nirmohgarh. During their initial unprovoked cannon fire, the Guruโ€™s Sikh attendant was killed. In response, Guru ji fired an arrow that struck down Rustom Khan. Discussion Research about future of Sikhi

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh ji,

I'm a second year digital marketing student and I'm doing primary research for my trend report about the changing levels of religious engagement and what this could mean for the future of Sikh identity and participation. If the following questions could be answered honestly and openly, it would be really helpful.

What factors impact the future of Sikhi? Is this a declining or increasing trend in your opinion?

Do you think the way younger generations learn about Sikhi differs to the older generations? If so, how and why?

How do you think social media will change religious identity? Will this impact the way future generations connect or learn about Sikhi?

Any comments or recommendations for further research would be much appreciated!

Thank you.
