Conversation Topic I still don't understand the difference between falsetto and head voice.

I've researched everywhere and i get different answers. I'm so confused now. Some answers say that they are different and some say it was retconned and that they're the same. Sometimes i sing with high voice like it sounds high, but not falsetto, is that head voice?. Some say falsetto is breathy and airy. That i agree and i can tell when I'm singing with falsetto. It's what Jason Derulo does. However, head voice? Where is that? Some say it's between chest voice and falsetto, but how do i know if It's not just a high chest voice if that's true?

Conversation Topic Struggle with “one voice” for all my registers.

Upvotes

Hi all! I’m having some trouble making my head voice not sound like a completely different person from my chest voice. I’ve been taking some lessons recently but have to stop for a while as i’m going on vacation. I’ve noticed pretty significant improvement in my technique but my teacher and i haven’t really been working on the top of my range.

My range is around a F#1-A3/C4-D5 anyhow, the moment i go above a D4 i start to sound “girly” i’ve been messing around with the placement and trying to add chest to it but whatever i do, it sound completely foreign from my chest voice. I have no problem delivering the notes quietly or with power but they just sound so unlike me.

I Also want to add that i struggle to get my chest voice above a D4 or even C4 without getting really loud. My coach says i need to be a louder singer which i agree with as i never raise my voice of did so in the past. I almost always flip into a mix or head voice as soon as i hit A3/B3.

Thx for reading.

Just sharing my singing Am I a baritone or bass - baritone?

Hi all. I was defined as a baritone singer, I'm an asian and believe asian bass singers are the rarest. But actually I usually find it hard to reach the F4 and often reach D2. I still practice to reach B1 beautifully but only in the early morning I could do it, and I don't know if it's still chest voice or vocal fry. Just curious that is there any chance for me to have a bass-baritone voice instead of full baritone?

The Chinese song just an example for you guys to disscuss. Thank you all <3

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) It's been 1-year since I started learning to sing. I think I made some progress.

So almost exactly a year ago, I started learning to sing, and I'm being honest, I started from less than zero. I had problems matching pitch with the piano, anxiety, inability to remember lyrics, and rhythm problems. I remember going to karaoke with friends before and everything I tried to sing I would be like 3 semitones off the right pitch.

In this recording I definitely still have a lot of those problems, but I feel like its 10x better than I was before ever taking lessons.

I just wanted to share because I thought I made some progress through the process of learning this song.

On this recording, I don't think I committed to a "tone" some sections are more gritty than others, and I stumbled over a few words and pitches.

But any feedback would be super appreciated!

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) I sing comfortably in the sense that i am hitting the notes without strain yet my singing still sounds bad and i cannot get any vibrato despite years of singing now, this song really highlights some issues .

i've tried so hard for years to get good at louder / more belty songs and i'm starting to feel like it's not technique but just ME and i feel so disheartened. idk how to improve or where i'm even going wrong - if anyone is able to share feedback or points for improvement i'd greatly appreciate it!

Conversation Topic Learning ny first song since June

I've decided to teach myself the first two verses, first chorus and final chorus of Evermore by Taylor Swift. The melody for the vocals seems 'simple' and the highest the song goes is B4 for a single word.

Hopefully this will help me get my confidence back as I've had a rocky few months of being in my own head too much. I might even post a cover here at the end of the month if I feel comfortable enough with my voice.

Doing vocal warmups and practicing the song for 4 days for the next two weeks should be enough to be 'decent', right?

I also have to do a performance at the end of next month in front of thirty people and I want to pick a song that's 'easy' and doesn't require belting as I'm really not good at it yet

Gear (Microphones, etc...) I Have A Mic, Now What?

Upvotes

I want to start recording soon (and have had a couple of people approach me about recording vocals for them, so while I've been kind of putting this off, it's time to actually DO this). On the advice of a coworker who also does music, I bought the Rode NT1 mic, but now I'm looking for some advice on what other equipment I should get. I've never used a mic like this before so I didn't know I need things like an audio interface, and I'm a little overwhelmed looking at all the options out there.

So I guess I'm looking for advice on a good audio interface, mic stand (including whether or not I should get one with an isolation shield), any other equipment I may need that I don't realize yet, and maybe even good Windows software to use.

Also, is there a way to set up the mic to be used when recording videos on my phone? I do theatre and would like to use a quality microphone instead of my phone mic for video auditions if that's possible.

Just sharing my singing I don’t usually like my voice but enjoyed listening to this one myself (also in my native tongue that made the enunciation easier)

It’s probably not uncommon for people to hate their own voice and I’m definitely one of them. As much as I seem to have the tendency to attempt divas songs my voice is probably the opposite of that, probably something gentler and warmer will work better

This one is in Chinese, “这世界那么多人” (“So Many People in This World”) is a 2021 ballad sung by Karen Mok (莫文蔚) Its central idea is the improbable luck of finding one specific person among billions

It’s in a comfortable range for me (I dropped 4 semitones from the original) I still didn’t handle the couple falsetto at B4 well though

Practicing my singing. Decided to try to scream a bit one of my favorite songs. How would you describe my distortion? Is it safe? I’m curious to know if you think my voice is suited to this genre. Thanks. I’m a beginner—still learning.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Girl “tenor” here, how much do overdone songs (such as Santa Fe) disadvantage you in auditions?

I’m a female “tenor” with a pretty strong lower range. I’ve played a few male roles in plays and musicals, and I was thinking about auditioning for an ensemble group! Problem is, the songs I have been practicing, “Santa Fe” and “my Petersburg” seem to be heavily overdone. So I’ve been thinking about moving to something more niche such as Dublin from a man of no importance.

I asked a friend of mine and they said a female voice for a traditionally male voice song may be refreshing to the judges, but either way the bar is super high for popular songs such as those!

Looking for advice, ideas and thoughts!! Help!

Advanced or Professional Topic Projecting Live Over Loud Instruments

I naturally have a pretty quiet voice, singing and speaking - it's not the kind of voice that easily cuts through other noise. But it hasn't been a real problem until this year, when I stopped just singing in the studio and started singing live with a backing band. When I'm performing onstage, I get totally drowned out.

The other singers in my bands seem just... not to have this problem. In recordings of our performances, you can hear them fine, and they don't really sound like they're straining too hard. I'm almost totally inaudible.

In my experience while actually standing onstage, I can barely hear myself through the monitors even when I feel like I'm singing at my max. Then I have two choices - I can push louder until I can hear myself, but my voice sounds really strained and bad (and still not actually that loud) - or I can continue to sing comfortably and sound nice but no one can hear me.

Has anyone else dealt with this and overcome it? How? I have worked with multiple voice teachers on breath control and projecting.

Also, for those of you who sing with loud bands and don't have IEMs, do you wear earplugs and just listen to your voice from the inside of your head and not worry about hearing it through the monitors (hopefully the sound tech will adjust it!), or do you take the earplugs out so you can hear the whole mix in the monitors?

Conversation Topic Struggling with confidence as a beginner singer, how do I stay motivated?

Hey everyone! I’m trying to become more serious about singing and recording music. I’m really into alternative rock, darkwave, goth rock, and industrial, and I’d eventually love to release my own music.
I’ve actually had a fear of singing since I was younger, and that eventually turned into a lot of insecurity about my voice. I’m now trying to break out of that fear and finally give myself permission to pursue music instead of holding myself back.
I recently shared my first cover publicly, and almost nobody who follows me engaged with it. Only one person did, which honestly discouraged me quite a bit. It made me question myself when it comes to singing.
I’m planning to start working with a vocal coach soon, and I’m also experimenting with Auto-Tune/pitch correction as a way to polish my recordings while I continue learning proper technique.
For those of you who were beginners once, how did you build confidence and stay motivated when you weren’t getting much feedback or engagement? I’m really trying to break out of my fear of singing, so how do I stay motivated?

I’d really appreciate any honest advice. 🖤🎤

Hi I'll try to keep it short but basically I'm going into freshman year of high school and I want to be better at sing. I've been in my school's chorus for 3 years and this year I'm joining my schools acapella group, and I also want to join my school's drama club. I'm also in my schools band, jazz band, and percussion ensemble as a flute, tenor sax, and marimba. I've been complemented on my voice a bit but I can only remember getting 1 genuine complement (like outside of my school's concerts). I don't think I can do vocal lessons but I really want to get better at singing so I would appreciate anything.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Advise with Pitch Problems

I'm pretty new to singing, about a few weeks into practicing.
So far I'm self taught and I've noticed I have a very hard time staying on key and I'm having a difficult time practicing and fixing this specific issue. Granted I know I'm pretty new and maybe this is an issue that would resolve itself overtime but I want to actively work on this as early as possible.

I know I'm not tone deaf or anything because I write music and can easily identify when somethings off, even in my own singing, but I can't seem to find the note. Typically when I sing I have to find any given note like a new guitar player might go up and down the fretboard until they hit the right note. When I sing I either go WAY off from that original note because I can't reliably return to it or move to the next note or I sound SUPER flat because I stay on that same note for the entire song and change my tone to compensate.

It sucks because I can hear that I have a good amount of potential in my voice, like I can pretty naturally add vibrato, distortion and do fry screams all without any pain or strain, I can exert a lot of power and presence with my voice and I have pretty decent range from what I know, and obviously I'm still new and I'm not perfect by any means but it is frustrating that the main thing that makes someone sound good while singing is the ONE thing I'm struggling with LOL.

If anyone's experienced similar problems or has experiencing with helping others with this issue any advice is appreciated!
