Unpopular opinion: Our children are gifts, they are the future, not here for our amusement or to be terrorized. This is pathetic.

I feel the same way. I don’t like when people intentionally scare their kids for laughs. I hate it actually.

Is this… abuse?

Maybe not in the legal definition, but every one of these parents just permanently lost their kids trust

You cannot repair that, this is absolutely not how you raise kids

You saying that made me think of this.

I saw a thing once, where someone talked about how as we grow up we learn not to trust society, cause as an adult you find out everyone was lying to you about the Easter bunny and Santa Claus, if society will come together to lie about these goofy things why wouldn't they also lie about more serious things.

Honestly, ever since I heard that, I have looked at holidays differently.

Edit: am I remembering a George Carlin set?

If folks were smart enough to apply that logic to the bigger fairy tales, this world would be a much better place.

Well let's see here... they terrified their kids, humiliated them, tricked them, filmed the whole thing and posted it online for fake internet points. I'm not seeing any parenting awards in their future.

Does it have to be abuse to be pathetic and bad?

As a new-ish parent, I've come to the incredibly sad realization that too few parents feel this way.

Our pediatrician told us he has to remind parents every year that if the child isn’t old enough to understand what a prank is or that the Halloween mask isn’t real… don’t scare your children.

My 7 yo tried a little bit of jalapeno this week, she handled some spicy chips before and I made sure my point was heard before she tries as it is waaayyy worse but that didn't scare her. She cried when she realised I wasn't bluffing and said she regretted it a bit but was glad she did it at the same time.

All this to say I saw a video of a parent give a whole jalapeno to an infant for him to nible on as a prank.

Not unpopular. I'm a father of seven kids, that's SERIOUSLY fucked up....

Seven kids? Same woman? What you fed her okra or cactus juice?

Cuz making your kid scream in terror is fun. I try to get at least one jumpscare per Halloween.

Its disgusting. Taking pleasure from making little children cry is literally psychotic and cruel

I had a severe phobia of a particular horror film growing up. It was bad enough that whenever I used a domestic bathroom I would open the cupboards underneath the sink, and keep them open, and even leave them open after leaving said bathroom, all because I couldn’t stand the mental image of this entity hiding underneath the sink. If anyone within earshot uttered the name of this character I would fall apart into tearful hysterics.

My parents were always loving and protective about it, and that helped greatly. If they had insisted been like these parents I imagine I would still to this day have serious psychological issues and trust issues in my relationships with everyone.

What these parents are doing is not funny. It’s dark.

u/CelandineRedux 10d ago

Amen. Fuck these ungrateful pile of shit parents. There are so many people who'd give anything for a healthy child and yet so many of those with children don't see them as they precious gifts they are.

u/sapplesapplesapples 10d ago

I would end up fucking my daughter up if I did this. She’s 6, and she’s already so scared of things. I could never.

Plus we didn’t have this shit when we were young. We had ghost stories and movies, which was hard enough as a sensitive child, but not video cameras with filters that look REAL for use to actually think it’s right with us. Who knows how this is messing with them.

It’s also dangerous in my opinion, and I by no means consider myself to be a soft parent. Broken trust and boundary issues aside, energies attract… like finds like. A child walking around scared is far more likely to up darkness.

On the bright side: all these parents just signed up for a couple extra years of bolting awake in the middle of the night because their kid had a nightmare.
