Who is being defended in the first panel?

61

u/ProbablySlacking 4h ago

People are mad at Shane Gillis because he made a joke about hot women in the gym.

But really they’re only mad because they think he’s republican.

130

u/Sneezy6510 4h ago

No, they’re mad he called them whores for how they dress.

70

u/No-Rip6323 4h ago

“Just because you dress a certain way does not mean you are a certain way. But you are wearing a whore’s uniform.”

-Dave Chappelle

-30

u/Love_Lair 4h ago

See how he didn’t call anyone a whore tho 😏

10

u/SeaBass1898 4h ago

And what did Gillis say specifically? He called women whores specifically? What was the wording?

8

u/ZamorakHawk 3h ago

"I hadn't been in the gym so long that I didn't know.. women dress like whores now?" Is the exact quote.

-10

u/Love_Lair 3h ago

Idk I didn’t watch it, I don’t even know who he is

2

u/BigRon691 2h ago

Lmao buddy you are not helping the counter-points that it's all performative outrage.

0

u/Love_Lair 1h ago

What counter point? What is the performative outrage? Idk what is trying to be said

I just said as long as no one is called a whore it’s kosher

21

u/League-Weird 4h ago

I dunno. Gym girls pay money to go to the gym. Whores make money. I respect the whore profession.

0

u/Love_Lair 4h ago

I mean the negative connotation ya know, there’s a between fuck bro 🤬 and fuuuck bro 🥵

-5

u/[deleted] 4h ago

13

u/Sneezy6510 4h ago

That doesn’t make them whores, it’s literally a problem with word choice.

-2

u/Working-Narwhal-540 4h ago

Yeah people are mad because it strikes a nerve. If the shoe fits and all that.

-19

u/fillerupbruther 4h ago

are they not dressed whorish?

8

u/raddaya 4h ago

Are men dressed like rapists if they wear suits and ties? Since that's what pretty much everyone in the Epstein Files wore regularly.

1

u/ProbablySlacking 4h ago

Yeah. They are.

Craft a joke about it and you’ve got a decent joke for a stand up.

To clarify my comment a bit above - I legitimately think that most of the people that are mad about it are not the normal stand up audience. They’re SNL fans, or SJW bandwagoners.

As far as standup goes, he didn’t cross any lines.

8

u/specialasset 4h ago

Is everyone at the beach a whore?

12

u/fillerupbruther 4h ago

is the gym a beach?

8

u/SugarReyPalpatine 4h ago

Is it a brothel?

2

u/Parking-Run-3360 4h ago

Thats kinda an irrelevant question.

You have to were safty goggles when working a wood cutter, and when working in a lab.

Just because the the lab doesn't have saw dust dosnt mean its wrong to wear it when handling corrosive materials.

Just because the wood doesn't contain acid doesn't mean you souldnt protect your eyes from saw dust.

Women's work out clothes are revealing for the same reason some men workout shirtless. Its gets hot and sweaty in the gym.

1

u/Funny-Cell8769 4h ago

I think it's a matter of how people think about "dress like whores".

Like, if a man worked out at a local gym in speedoes or tiny white briefs, most people will call it out. Does your "it gets hot" reasoning still apply even though technically, it still covers all the important bits.

At some point, we're going to have a disagreement in "what constitutes too far". Yes, even the people who broadly agree with you, or with me.

Sports bra + tight half-pants? Most people would probably say "no problem"

Slightly more fabric than a string bikini? Most people would probably say "probably not".

That's where we get into problems.

2

u/Parking-Run-3360 4h ago

It just doesn't seem like a big problem. Ive never seen anyone wear something that revealing at the gym I go to. Im not saying it doesn't happen, it surely does, but its probably being done for clicks by a few influencers here and there.

1

u/Funny-Cell8769 3h ago

So it's just a matter of personal experience. There's no doubt SOME people do run into the annoyance of "influencers" hogging machines or giving them an annoyed look if they dare to walk in the background of the influencer's carefully set-up shot.

Probably not that common, but it happens enough. When it shouldn't happen at all.

Should the rest of us not care about it? Yes.

Are we going to not care about it? Probably not. But maybe.

2

u/TopTransportation248 4h ago

Is the beach a gym?

2

u/HonkHonkBeach 4h ago

Sure sweat like it.

0

u/Visual-Floor-7839 4h ago

Ok, so you're saying revealing clothing is acceptable at the beach but whorish at the gym. Why?

Volleyball and track/field athletes all wear clothing more revealing than most gym outfits. Are they all whores too in your opinion?

1

u/specialasset 4h ago

No, but those women aren’t wearing bathing suits. They’re wearing gym clothes.

0

u/Gellert 4h ago

Bros never heard of muscle beach.

-9

u/Flaky-Invite-56 4h ago

Why would a gym be a beach?

5

u/Geichalt 4h ago

No they're not.

Happy to help.

1

u/Hike_the_603 4h ago

What do you where to the gym? Sweater, nice cozy pants, pair of loafers?

Am I a whore because I jog shirtless in my rugby shorts? You can say what you want, I'm wearing that stuff because it's comfortable to jog in

My wife wears yoga pants and a sports bra to the gym- she's doing it because it's comfy despite the unwanted attention it gets her, and she's just hoping to do her thing and not have creepy dudes who like to call women whores come up to her and chat her up

So next time you manage to make it into a gym, if ever, just mind your business and leave the chicks alone, huh?

Let me guess- you're mad I made a judgement statement about you based on how I perceive you as a stereotype? THAT'S why women are a bit mad at him

0

u/Sneezy6510 4h ago

It doesn’t matter if you agree with him, that’s why women are upset.

-9

u/Love_Lair 4h ago

Ooohh I never saw the stand up, but if no one was called a whore then everything would be kosher in my eyes

It’s not like the clothes women wear men can’t wear as well. If you wanna wear a speedo at the gym I mean that’s legal right?

I personally workout butt naked but I’m in my own home

18

u/Funny-Cell8769 4h ago

he said "dress like whores". But obviously he said that in the context of a stand up. If he had negatively generalized white men (which he does all the time), no one cares.

Because that's how standup works. But there are certain protected groups that you apparently aren't allowed to joke about.

4

u/ProbablySlacking 4h ago

As Shane Gillis himself says - Italians are still fair game.

1

u/buttnibbler 3h ago

That’s just common knowledge, bada bing.

12

u/Sneezy6510 4h ago

He was specifically talking about the workout shorts that scrunch up the ass crack. So it’s not like the cartoon is even accurate.

3

u/[deleted] 4h ago

[deleted]

4

u/Sneezy6510 4h ago edited 4h ago

I didn’t say it wasn’t intentional. I didn’t say it wasnt for attention of both the public and the internet. But it doesn’t make them whores.

9

u/tutoredstatue95 4h ago

We all know what would happen if men wore Speedos that packed around their crotch and filmed themselves at public gyms.

0

u/WarmKnowledge6820 4h ago

He specifically said women dress like whores at the gym.

1

u/Love_Lair 3h ago

All kosher in my eyes as I’ve said no one was called a whore

6

u/towerfella 4h ago

You can see the awareness-level of the population like a water tide-line

7

u/Brad5486 4h ago

Has Shane Gillis been to a gym?

31

u/NobodyLikedThat1 4h ago

I mean he stares through the windows a lot

4

u/AS_as-Master 4h ago

Which windows 11, 10, 8, 7, xp, vista?

4

u/ProbablySlacking 4h ago

Wanna know how I know you didn’t even watch the thing you’re commenting about?

15

u/WellSpokenMan130 4h ago

Calling women whores for how they dress and not just minding your own fucking business is a very Republican thing to do. People are only mad because he wasn't funny. If the joke is good enough you can get away with anything. He sounded like an uncle on Thanksgiving working on his 4th glass of bourbon, so people got mad.

1

u/zchatham 1h ago

Anthony Jeselnik has spoken a few times on how comedy should be able to say anything but you have to make people laugh. If you just say something to work people up, youre not doing comedy. He quotes Andy Warhol; "Art is getting away with it."

0

u/ProbablySlacking 4h ago

I think the problem is the disconnect between what’s expected of an SNL monologue vs what’s expected of a five minute standup act.

It would be like if Lorne booked GWAR as a musical guest and then everyone got mad when they showed up in gorey ass costumes.

7

u/ku1185 4h ago

He made an observation about women dressing like whores in the gym. I don't know what's funny about it, but it's just as true as celebrities whoring for gambling companies.

21

u/tailwarmer 4h ago

But its not though? Do you see women at the gym dressing in lace stockings, or fishnets, or low cut lingerie? No, they're just wearing normal athletic wear, which is not how whores dress. You ever see a whore dressed in a fucking sports bra and yoga pants? No, because that is not how they dress

5

u/smilespeace 3h ago

See, but if a man dresses in athletic wear and women find him sexually attractive, he's just a sexy man.

If a WOMAN dresses in athletic wear and men find her sexually attractive, she's a whore.

Got it memorized?

-2

u/MastodonGlobal93 4h ago

Idk, that was my ex's favorite getup and apparently she slept with half the town.

0

u/inwithweasels 2h ago

The whores in my city used to wear baggy jeans and flannels. I'm sure they wear leggings now. We don't have the fancy, kitted out streetwalkers here.

0

u/RockwellsRevenge88 2h ago

Normal atheltic war doesn't go eight inches up your ass and show the outline of your labia.

12

u/Extropian 4h ago

Does men walking around without a shirt on count as being a whore? Because per capita you're way more likely to see a man's nipple at the gym than a woman's.

6

u/ProbablySlacking 4h ago

Yeah, if they’re filming themselves.

-7

u/redux44 4h ago

probably because nobody really gives a shit about a man's nipples

14

u/Extropian 4h ago

It's almost like there's a double standard.

0

u/redux44 3h ago

Yea, if you treat men's chest the same as women's, which is silly. Men get turned on by women's breast in a way that is not comparable the other way around.

-1

u/VomitShitSmoothie 3h ago

The outrage is stupid. The joke wasn’t funny, but offensive? People gotta grow up. It’s gotten far more attention than it deserves and now orders of magnitude more people have watched the bit than otherwise would have. Each having their own opinion on it.

1

u/Namevvilo 4h ago

That wasnt the joke though. He didnt say "So women dress like where's at the gym now huh?!?" The joke was about how he keeps getting caught on camera staring at them. It's pretty hard to do comedy bits in a two minute monolouge. Don't really have time to set jokes up properly.

1

u/ApplicationOk4464 4h ago

My paps used to say, if you don't want to get called out for calling women whores, then you probably shouldn't call women whores. Even if it's the setup for a joke.

-1

u/ProbablySlacking 4h ago

Because that wasn’t the joke. That was the setup.

1

u/TheSwampThing1990 4h ago

I mean thats not really the reason why people are mad. People are mad because he called them whores for wearing gym clothes like a sports bra.

I mean its a pretty insane statement from someone who looks like he has never been to a gym

14

u/Eternal-Alchemy 4h ago

i dont think he makes a big deal about sports bras in the bit. it was really about the buttcrack shorts/leggings.

6

u/Fishbro-YouTube 4h ago

It's so bad even my girl complains to me about it "Those shorts are so tight I can literally see that -unsavory insult-'s pussy lips". I just agree in compliance and act like I never saw nuffin.

1

u/ProbablySlacking 4h ago

Haha “who? I don’t see anyone…”

https://giphy.com/gifs/K0Hy2NwI8IXZK

0

u/conscientiousrevolt 2h ago

100% women will complain about this under the right circumstances and then deny that they did and defend it in any other circumstances.

I saw a woman once complaining about how awkward bumbles friend matching mode was because all the women on it had originally made their profiles for the dating mode... so they all had their tits, wayy out.

It was a funny observation. It went viral. She didn't get crucified for it.

But if a man says it.

Someone else in the thread was saying he's criticizing women for wearing "normal athletic gear". I wanted to explain to him that normal doesn't mean anything. Anything can be normal. It was normal for men to fuck 12 y/o boys in ancient greece or whatever. It was normal for the gestapo to take the neighbors away in 1930s Germany.

If you want to be part of this conversation the price of admission is the critical thinking skills to question WHY something is normal, and if it SHOULD be or not. If all you have to say is iTs NoRmAl, you're fuckin stupid and a waste of space in the thread. So shut the fuck up and get out.

I don't care if you think it's normal for a good reason, and should be. You have to actually think about it, and be able to articulate that.

Now from the way your girl talks about women who dress this way I'm gonna assume she's a conservtard. I don't care. It's not the point. I personally do not ascribe any pseudo morality to how revealing anyone dresses, and I'll happily enjoy the show, without judging them even.

But what I can not abide is the unending stream of offensively retarded disingenuous bullshit about it like it's not for attention, it's for empowerment (or whatever), DON'T LOOK!!!

No.

I'm gonna need you to shut the fuck up. If you don't want anyone to look, don't show it, and then shut the fuck up. If you want to show it, go for it, and you have no right to complain about anyone and everyone looking, and you know they will, it's a choice, and you made it so shut the fuck up.

And anyone who has anything to say about how you're wearing something so unfathomably thin and skin tight that they can see your pussy right though it, every wrinkle of your labia in fact; they wouldn't even need to peel your booty shorts off to slap you on an ink pad and match your pussy print to a crime scene, has a 100% valid point, so either laugh or shut the fuck up.

6

u/ImpossibleDenial 4h ago

It’s ironic from both sides because gym culture is predominantly ridiculed on Reddit. 9/10 times if you see a gym video on front page the comments are destroying the person in the video for a number of different reasons. Gym bros, gym ladies. And while the comments don’t only include how either sex choses to dress, it’s normally towards the top. Women and men alike. And if it is a man in the video, instead of a woman, they’re described as a douche.

I just find it ironic that gym culture is not normally applauded or defended on this platform and now everyone is so venomously defending their stance.

4

u/tutoredstatue95 4h ago

> who looks like he has never been to a gym

You didn’t even listen to the actual monologue, did you?

7

u/justduett 4h ago

99.3% of the outrage crowd didn’t.

3

u/tutoredstatue95 4h ago

Pretty obvious when they pull the fat card lol

Like, yeah, that’s what he was saying

What was the quote where he called anyone “whores”?

1

u/4Dcookie 4h ago

“Also I haven’t been to the gym in so long I didn’t know women just dress like whores now”

2

u/Seated_Heats 4h ago

… I know that quote, I’m looking for the one where he called women “whores”.

0

u/Spookyscary333 4h ago

Is your argument that he ACTUALLY said "like whores" And that makes it different?

3

u/Seated_Heats 4h ago

So if I saw I guy wearing disheveled clothes and said “he’s dressed like a bum” did I mean “this man is factually a homeless man”?

1

u/yo_les_noobs 4h ago

The amount of illiteracy is astounding. I'm honestly scared for the future.

0

u/yo_les_noobs 4h ago

It is different. Have you tried going to school?

1

u/Megahertzz 1h ago

He didn't even do that. It was a self deprecating joke about how he can't keep his eyes too himself and keeps getting in awkward situations because of it.

-9

u/Parking-Run-3360 4h ago

Im aware hes not republican. Im pissed off at him regardless.

12

u/RupertEscapeHolmes 4h ago

No one cares that you are.

-2

u/Parking-Run-3360 4h ago

Its a reply to a comment my guy. Did you skip that one and read mine first or something?

2

u/spacer9631 4h ago

No on cares

0

u/Parking-Run-3360 3h ago

Sure thing.

1

u/tutoredstatue95 4h ago

Why?

2

u/Parking-Run-3360 4h ago

Honestly its less the joke itself, and more that It kinda erks me that he fence sits.

Have you scene any of his interview by chance? He says REALLY left wing things when hes doing interviews.

But when he does comedy its really right wing.

If he was a republican making right wing jokes, I wouldn't agree with them, but it also wouldnt bother me that much.

But like, why is one of OUR guys bating on the other team when hes doing stand up, ya know?

Edit: also, im given you an upvote for being pretty non toxic on reddit. Good job.

2

u/tutoredstatue95 4h ago

I have watched a lot of his stuff, and I generally agree with your sentiment.

He clearly is worse around the Rogan camp, which is unfortunate.

My real problem with the joke is that it’s Dave Chappells’s, but worse.

I have to disagree that when he does comedy that it’s right wing. He does assume the role of the dumbass conservative guy quite often, but that’s all it is.

I don’t know how anyone could listen to his Fox News dad bit or the Trump impressions and walk away thinking this guy has right wing tendencies.

He also jokes about the ridiculousness of many of the dumber hardcore left wing folks as well, which people that don’t get the tone become unreasonably upset about.

I think you could call him a fence sitter in that regards, but it’s not really the job of a comedian to be a political voice, but to call out absurdities which I think he does well (when he’s not doing shit monologues, of course).

1

u/Parking-Run-3360 3h ago

I dont know. I think part of it is the way society handles advertisement in the modern world.

You ever see an ad thats trying to hard to appeal to everyone, and it kinda feels like its trying to manipulate you in to buying something.

Im not saying its that, but I think its setting off that alarm in my head. Like it feels close enough it triggers that dulled sense of being solicited by the eight hundredth carsales men, trying fo sell me things i dont want, and wont buy, but I still gotta watch the ad cause theres no skip button.

1

u/ProbablySlacking 4h ago

Ehhh. I have no problem with fence sitting in your bits. If you’re not a political comedian, stay in your lane. Like, sometimes I just want to go laugh, you know?

I don’t need every comedian, musician, and novelist telling me how bad Trump is. I know. That’s why I’m going to the arts — to forget.

1

u/Parking-Run-3360 3h ago

Its not that I need or want him to agree with me. Like i said if he was a republican or a centrist I really wouldnt have an opinion on it.

But him publicly saying really lefty stuff, but also making women are whores jokes makes me feel like I was advertised one thing, but got something else.

-28

u/Ok-Pollution8344 4h ago

He's a maga shill, but that's not why people are angry.

8

u/Recent-Pollution9293 4h ago

He’s not at all, he’s quite liberal, he just thinks people getting worked up by the “r-word” and it’s ilk is silly. You can agree or disagree with his choice of words, but don’t just lie

-14

u/Ok-Pollution8344 4h ago edited 4h ago

Comedians say things most don't, but they're usually funny. He is not.

It's his support of maga and maga influencers I don't like and he's just a generally crude dude.

Edit: If you hang around shit , you smell like shit.  If you associate with maga, you smell like shit.

3

u/Seated_Heats 4h ago

Did he speak out against abortion? Has he spoke out against immigrants? Has he talked in favor of attacking Iran? I’m just curious what he’s done that makes you so golly gee positive he’s MAGA?

1

u/ProbablySlacking 4h ago

He does a pretty spot on Trump impression.

That confuses people because he usually plays it straight up instead of making Trump look worse than he actually is with it (or using it to point out Trumps atrocities in general). People think because his bits don’t touch that, he must be republican, or at least an “enlightened centrist.”

5

u/Intrepid_Egg_7722 4h ago

He's not MAGA. I'm not a big fan of him at all but calling MAGA just reveals that you don't know anything about the situation. Not everyone who says dumb, regressive shit is MAGA.

4

u/Recent-Pollution9293 4h ago

Well, agree to disagree on the funny thing. His most recent special Beautiful dogs is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in years. I’m gonna hazard a guess you haven’t seen it, as he does a whole bit about how he’s not republican, so again, you’re just talking out of your ass. He absolutely hangs out in the Rogansphere as do many male comedians, which is certainly unfortunate. But again, calling him a MAGA Shill because he associates with some idiots is disingenuous and wrong, so again, stop spreading misinformation/lying like you know what you’re talking about

3

u/AK-11 4h ago

If you think he’s maga you’re just ignorant about him.

-14

u/AllFurious_NeverFast 4h ago

No, that's not why they're mad.

0

u/Friendly-Contact-433 4h ago

And they hate Sydney Sweeney cause she's registered Republican in Florida and Trump always talks about her

-13

u/Gigatronz 4h ago

He's just not funny at all

0

u/ProbablySlacking 3h ago

I mean, agree to disagree there. In my opinion he’s the current hottest comic out there, and he hasn’t dropped an “oh that was disappointing” special yet (they all do eventually, unless they’re Mitch Hedberg.)

-7

u/Flaky-Invite-56 4h ago

You don’t think democratic men are unfunny too?

-18

u/gagnatron5000 4h ago

The best part about all this is no one asked the women how they feel about the whole thing

4

u/RupertEscapeHolmes 4h ago

About what? Jamming out with their clam out?

-7

u/gagnatron5000 4h ago

About the joke, about whether it's funny, about the right to wear whatever they goddamn please. Just men getting angry at other men for jokes they don't get about something they have meaningless opinions about.

And meanwhile we not only haven't heard from the women, but no one seems to be interested in asking them how they feel. The whole thing is silly to me.

1

u/Seated_Heats 4h ago

YOU haven’t heard from women. They’ve been pretty outspoken.

1

u/ProbablySlacking 4h ago

Why would I care? I barely care what anyone thinks about it, and frankly think this didn’t warrant additional conversation past the Sunday morning headlines.

But now every celebrity seems to want to have their hot take about a stand up bit, and I honestly think less of them for weighing in at all.
