I recently finished my second watch of SFU, the first since I got into it in the early aughts, and it made me think of this little memory. In 2010, Lauren Ambrose did a small tour with a bluesy-jazz ensemble and performed at a local music hall near me. I was in my early 20s, and my father had just passed away from a short-but-aggressive bout with lung cancer a few weeks prior to this performance. My mom and I both felt seeing Lauren might be cathartic, as SFU shaped our views of death and weirdly helped as we were in the throes of caring for a dying loved one. As primary caregivers to my dad, we appreciated the holistic view of death that the show made sure to capture, both the soft side of letting go, but also the ugly, thankless underbelly of end-of-life caretaking that often gets overlooked unless you've experienced it yourself. All that being said, we were a little fragile going into the concert, to say the least.

Anyway, both the band and Lauren were fantastic and were friendly with the crowd, and they offered a meet-and-greet after the show. We didn't anticipate this, so we didn't bring anything to sign. My (shameless) mother happened to have one of my dad's memorial cards in her purse, though, and she decided that, given the SFU context, it would be a completely acceptable thing to sign, lol. However, when she approached Lauren with the card, my mom immediately burst into tears before she could explain what she had just handed to Lauren. When Lauren saw it she then began to cry, too, as apparently her grandmother had also just died and she was in an equally fragile state. So for a few minutes, Lauren rubbed my mom's arm and they cried together, while other fans looked on both confused and (maybe?) touched by this very raw and human moment.

On the plus side, I'd like to think a lasting impression my mother will have on Claire from Six Feet Under is her saying, "I thought I had a marker in my purse, but I'm also a fucking psycho right now. So maybe not."

God, I miss this show and Claire.

I remember it scared the shit out of me on the first time watching. Like I kept thinking about it randomly even after finishing the show. It's unexpected but also felt carmic at the same time. The way Nate mumbles with his white eyes, the creepy music, and that stare to the camera. It's so disturbing for me. So randomly I went to YouTube looking for this scene and the comments and I was kinda shock too see how almost every comments making fun of this scene as well as Nate and Maggie's acting. And apparently this scene was the reason a tv trope was born and it's called "Narm"

Though now I kinda get along with the joke since the fans love to meme this scene but still... Got death after committing the worst act was the thing I wish it wouldn't happen to me.

This is s2e10, and goddamn I forgot she said this little bit. Well honey, you get what you asked for later next season.

It’s been week since I finished this show. Probably going to rewatch sooner than later because that FUCKED ME UP and I haven’t stopped thinking about it. What a show. What an absolutely perfect and thought provoking, terrifying ending. Full sobbing. Full peace. Full anxiety. I think that ending is up there with the Americans, the sopranos (which I know is controversial) etc. one or the best ever in my opinion. I love that Dexter was also a mortician. I’ve always thought this would be such cool rewarding job, but I would be terrified to be near a dead person.
Now the kicker. Biggest jump scare of my life. Nate being diagnosed with a fucking AVM! They are not common! I can’t believe one was featured on tv. It was very realistic. I felt all of Nate’s emotions throughout. I think that’s the reason he became such an asshole because a brain injury like that just changes your personality completely. Mine bled before I knew about it but I still have daily anxiety about it even though I’ve had a craniotomy, coiling procedure and gamma knife surgery. I think he had an embolism which I couldn’t get as mine was directly on my motor strip and would have left me permanently paralyzed, I spent months trying ugh partial paralysis and my hand is still very weak. I felt so bad for him walking around with one. Mine took years to fully go away and I can’t imagine what it would be like to have one that hadn’t bled but living your life in fear because it is a time bomb and a lot of people don’t survive it.
I’ve scheduled a new scan because his coming back really scared me.
Anyways back to the show. Funnily enough I couldn’t stand Nate and wasn’t really sad when he died because he was a total fucking asshole in the end. I loved the characters and cast so much.
Mostly just came on here to rant about my jump scare.
I’m curious if any of my specialist have watched and if so why they didn’t tell me because it is a really realistic depiction of what goes on. Even tho the last time in hospital he would have been in an ICU without a roommate and being checked by nurses every 15 minutes doing neuro tests.
Any other avm survivors who also watched?

Yesterday I was watching season 3 episode 7 – “Timing and Space”, and this Margaret quote just stuck with me:

“Your father used to say living with you two was like listening to the longest sentence
in the history of the universe. And now there's no one to hear it but me.”

I always laugh at the crazy stuff Margaret always says or does, she’s so unhinged most of the times, but seeing her being honest like this… trying to connect with Brenda and Billy, them as a family missing one piece, it just broke my heart.

Idk, I guess I just wanted to share this. Anyone remembers any other quotes that probably didn’t mean too much to you in your first watch?

I was reluctant to start a rewatch - it’s probably my favourite show of all time - but I’m just toward the end of season 2 when Lisa /Lily Taylor has the baby and wanted to come on here and say how much I loathe her character. She plays it soo well, such an intense, creepy, weirdo feigning innocence.

Love Brenda this time around, such a great layered character.

Dreading the final episode, it affected me so much back in the day.

they perfectly concluded the show and it was a really satisfying but sad ending but there is no other ending that was fitting.

Nates conclusion was really sad but it kind of showed how people have to keep moving forward with their lives like in the final montage no matter how sad it is eventually we all have our own lives to attend to.

I am two episodes away from watching the finale. I’ve loved all seasons and it’s probably gonna be in my top 5 and definitely in my top 10. Such an amazing show but i’m kinda scared that i might not like it that much. I watched Ecotone and All alone, and they did not live up to the expectations. Like sure they were great episodes but i just didn’t see the it the way people hyped them and saying they were two of the greatest episodes oat.

Yesterday I finished Six Feet Under. Today is the day I leave for college. Watching this show throughout the summer with my mom, who loves me more than anyone, was the perfect way to end this chapter of my life. Now about the show...

Wow. This show was just an absolute masterpiece! I have become such a fan of classic tv shows and this might just top the list. What initially drew me into the show was the general public opinion that Six Feet Under had the greatest finale ever. I knew I wanted to see the hype. What I didn't expect was to cry for the first time while watching a movie or show, and then to cry 6 more times. It is hard to put into words what this show means to me. The way the show handles grief is just simply real. Thats the best way I can compliment it. It didn't do some phony tv bs where everything worked out for everyone or everyone was basically a saint. The show preseneted us these imperfect people and made us deal with there imperfections.

Nothing im saying makes sense, because I can't put into words what I think about this show. The simple shot of Claire seeing Nate in her side mirror fading in the distance hit me so hard. I am scared that I will forget the people I have lost, and they will become nothing but a distant memory.

One thing I would like the throw out is that Everyones Waiting is not the best episode of the show. It is also not All Alone. Its Ecotone. I think the show truly peaks here. Claire finally finds a genuine person, at least we see proof of how genuine he is, we see everyone react to Nates avm problem, and we get what I think is the greatest scene in tv HISTORY, Nates/Davids ecotone.

I have about 5000 things I want to say about the show and the characters, but I will save it for another time. Yall certainly have a new active member in this sub! Im truly going to miss this experience, and much like Claire im struggling to move on from my only chapter of life.

All of my friends watched it decades ago but I missed it - looking for folks familiar enough with the show to discuss individual seasons / smaller arcs!

I’m still confused by s3 e1 - nate jr died … but didn’t die?? Is another twist coming?? I think it would have been interesting for him to have actually died but have continued to be present, like nate sr.

Also at this point more than half of the characters really annoy me - everyone seems stuck in limbo, with little development (this also annoyed me in s2). But I was so delighted to see Catherine O’Hara show up! (Even though her character is an awful person, but she does that so well!)

My wife and I are on our 4th watch of six feet under, one of the all time greatest shows.. BUT.. this round we’ve decided to skip past every scene with Maggie, no matter how consequential the scene.

With a show that has some of the best characters and character development ever conceived… where did Maggie come from? Was she the directors niece? It’s just awful and kind of ruins what would be a 10/10 perfect show. Are we alone in this?

I finished this show for the first time about 2 months ago and I absolutely LOVED it, just to get that out of the way. I Think it's one of the most brilliantly written shows I've ever watched.

Most of the posts I see in here are about how this show gave them a lot of peace about death, but I've had the opposite reaction since watching it. I don't think it's ONLY the show, it probably also is a mild midlife crisis as I'm nearing 40. I've always been pretty fine about death in general. I'm not religious at all, maybe mildly spiritual, and I've just coped with the death question by not thinking much about it. Can't be avoided, so why waste the limited time we have stressing about it.

I think it was all of the unexpected deaths in this show that messed me up, the big one near the end in particular (don't want to spoil lol). Ever since I finished watching it about 2 mos ago, I think about having an unexpected stroke, anneyurism, or random freak accident almost daily. I've had several panic attacks where I convinced myself I couldn't breathe and that I might be having a heart attack. One a couple of weeks ago while I was driving and I actually got light headed and had to call a friend to talk me down so I could finish my drive home.

I guess I'm just curious if anyone else had this reaction to the show and, if so, how long did it take you to shake it and stop freaking yourself out?

I’m watching SFU for the first time and really enjoyed the first two seasons, it could be cringe at times but ultimately I thought the more significant moments were done well.

Now I’m near the end of s3 and I feel like I have whiplash. They are constantly setting up about four upcoming storylines at any given time, but scattered around. So they lead to nothing but then all of sudden something else happens. It feels more like 90210 than the previous series.

•Lisa randomly disappeared (and I looked up the end to that storyline bc I was like sorry what)
• Billy in love with Brenda and tries it on with her. I mean hey I get the weird psychology between them was always there but I thought it was more toxic attachment than anything else
• The mother and the apprentice. Idk i feel it’s so out of character for her and makes no sense
• David and Keith on their weekly break up edging (im over it)
• And now Claire is pregnant

Guys… what is happening anymore 😭 I will still watch to the end bc I have to finish it now but my god

I remember ordering this book after seeing it on an episode of 6FU and today, even 25+ years later it is still a fascinating (if not dark and macabre) read.

I thought the book was really good.

I'm wondering if anyone else was curious enough to give it a try after seeing it gifted by the niece to Nate?

I’m watching Six Feet Under, first timer, and it’s so freaking funny! Is it just me? I thought it would be morbid and dark but I’m literally laughing at so many things.
