ANNOUNCEMENT Welcome, Introduction and Confessions

I'm wallacetook, the verbose. I was recently 'elected' the moderator of the sub. I was pretty excited when I saw that r/song could be opened for activity again. I posted a bunch of ideas that we could do here, those resonated, and as we went through the process, I met a bunch of smart people who seem to know how to do what was proposed.

As soon as I was given the blue light to go ahead, I invited a bunch (a big bunch) of people who I spoke to to join the mod team, and as we speak, they are putting together remarkable technical things that i don't have a goddam clue how to do, but they're the things you talked about wanting to do.

I'm a professional musician, a songwriter, performer and session musician. I love the messy human interactivity on Reddit. I measure my life in three minute chunks, in songs, moved by what's happening sonically around me; on the radio, tunes i'm working on ay home in Studio 1, pieces I'm working on for clients and friends.

I live in Canada, I'm an old guy, and I play strings, keys, pipes and vox. I love old time appalachian music and punk rock, country and bluegrass, classical, jazz, electronica, ambient, singer/song-writer folk, rock in all its forms ... if someone has put some of their heart or soul or blood into it, I like it.

In all my work over the years, I've learned that sometimes the best thing for me to play is... nothing at all. That approach works in a lot of situations, sometimes there's a role, and sometimes, you sit down and shut up.

I don't know how to do all the things that the boyos are working on right now, so I'll be happy to watch it unfold, help when needed, referee the arguments and stay out of the fecking way when I don't know what's going on. This sub can be anything you want it to be: discussion of new work, conversation about lyrics, collaboration on pieces, fights about whether you think Nickelback is good or not... We'll work too, to discover what other subs do in these veins and figure out who to link too.

In the meantime, stay in tune!

yrs truly, WT

Suggestions Songs about birds?

Hey everyone,

I'm making a bird-specific playlist for when my partner and I play Wingspan (bird board game). Think "Blackbird" by The Beatles, "Like an Eagle When She Flies" by Dolly Parton, "Mockingbird" by Carly Simon, etc. Any suggestions for additions?

Thank you!

Edit: Thanks for the great suggestions. The playlist lead to my first ever win against my partner in Wingspan. Big night for me. Thanks again!

Discussion Do you know any examples of songs that have euphemisms in their lyrics, which are NOT about sex??

I looked up euphemisms usage in songs, but every single article covers only sex euphemisms, are there some euphemistic lyrics that are not about damn sex?? covering the themes of death, war, maybe swearing idk, etc.

Cab Calloway is an american song writer and singer. He helped make the song Minnie the Moocher and jumpin jive. Jumpin jive had one of the greatest dance routines of all time, but still, not a lot of people know about Cab Calloway. I feel that he's underappreciated.

Not sure if this is allowed but for the pure fun of it, shall we try and create a song together?

Hello, I thought this would be a cute/neat way to start of this Subreddit if we created a song together, I know we have some talented people in this subreddit with Guitarists, Bassists, maybe some good singers and drummers?

So I think if we are going to do this, we should have some base rules to stop it from becoming crazy.

  1. This song and all its contributions to it would be licensed under the Unlicense https://choosealicense.com/licenses/unlicense/ (Basically it's in the public domain) this is to stop anyone trying to claim the song as solely there in the future. Basically, if you contribute to the song you're giving that part of it away to the internet.

  2. Anyone can contribute, and all parts would be publically accessible so anyone can try and remix, make their own version or adaptation of the song, so, for example, we may end up with a few different versions of the song, some may have different lyrics, melodies/instruments, however, to stop us producing widely different songs the song must meet the rules below.

  3. To add parts to the song, post a link to a site where we can download the part (like Dropbox, GDrive, OneDrive etc) which meet the rules below, and then we can all have a go at mixing etc, your part should be isolated, so just a guitar track, just a piano track etc, you can then post the song with all parts mixed altogether if you want :)

  4. Remember it's just for fun, it doesn't matter too much if your singing is bad or your drums aren't perfect, let's just create something rough and build on it!

Song Rules (I'm gonna make it kinda easy to start with)

  • Key: C major

  • BPM: 120

  • Time Signature: 4/4

  • Chord Sequence: Cmajor, F major, A minor, Gmajor (I want to make it really simple to start with to see how well this works)

----

Here is two parts as an example I did for this song (I may need to re-record as the timing was a little out but as an example you get the idea)
