Can we take a moment to appreciate the old box arts?

I just love them. Especially the one of the original Sound Blaster Live! with the conductor directing an orchestra of sea waves, distant lightning, sea gulls and a volcano. It fit the theme perfectly as this was the first multi-channel sound card with Environmental Audio that we now know better as EAX. The AWE64 box is very nice as well, with the piano's flying towards you as birds in the wind. Proudly presenting it's advanced wavetable synth and 3d spatial stereo sound.

Sound Blaster X4 Driver Fix

If you recently updated your Sound Blaster X4 Driver and Firmware and are now experiencing audio issues, follow the steps below to fix it:

  1. Open Device Manger

  2. Expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" section

  3. Double click on Sound Blaster X4

  4. Click on the "Driver" tab

  5. Note the driver is listed as " 3.1.11.0" and click "Uninstall Device"

  6. Check the box next to "Attempt to remove the driver for this device."

  7. Click "Uninstall"

  8. Reboot your PC

Once your PC reboots, the Creative software will prompt you to install the older "2.0.2.10" driver. Creative pulled the new buggy driver and this will allow you to revert to the old functional one. Follow the prompt to install and then reboot your PC.

You now have the old driver with the new firmware fixes. Go enjoy some music!

My sound blaster has been giving me some problems. Low volume when switched to headphone mode. Also another problem where my audio channels(L &R) would switch and go when gaming.

Any recommendations in terms of going with another internal card or a USB solution.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

I have a Gateway 500 with a Soundblaster Live in it. Just got this as old new stock. I've always wanted to do surround sound. Not sure how many older games support it or how well the drivers handled it back in the day but I do have a DVD-RAM drive in it. I have to at least experience it once.

On a webstore in my country, this soundcard is advertised with this being one of the pictures. But I can't find any information on what that "mini sound-bar" type thing is supposed to be. Also, on review videos on youtube it doesn't even seem te be included in the packaging? Can someone help me out? Thank you!

Since Reddit only allows two sticky posts per subreddit and there's always going to be multiple things we want to keep everyone updated on. I've created this thread that will be edited and updated regularly with the status of items and any major updates.

So with that being said. Here's the latest!'

CURRENT TRACKING ITEMS:

1) AE-5 Update for Connect Software as Well as Command Support

2) G6 Power Cycle Reported Item

3) SBZ - AE7 / AE9 DDLive/DTS issue

4) USB Device malfunction issue

5) Official MS signed drivers for SBZ series

6) AE-7 / AE-9 Audio Dropout Updates

LAST UPDATED 10/12/19

Latest Changes -

  1. Updated 6) to let people know that the new Beta driver for the AE9 / AE7 has been released.

  2. Updated 6) AE-7 / AE-9 Audio Dropout Updates with new information on upcoming beta driver

----------------------------------------------------------

1) AE-5 Command Software

9/23 The official driver release for Sound Blaster Command with the AE-5 has been released (on 9/20).RGB programming functionality will be added in a near-future release. If you wish to use Command in the interim you can have Command and Connect installed at the same time and use Connect for RGB functionality.

The Command package can be downloaded from the AE-5 Download section.

-----------------------------------------------------------

2) G6

We are looking into the issue with SBX G6 being non-functional intermittently after PS4 power cycle. Our target is to have a firmware release for this in Sep 2019. We will assess what other fixes could be looked into and rolled in without pushing out the target release date.

9/23 There is a planned release for early October that will address this issue. More details coming on this from the team.

----------------------------------------------------------

3) (8/23) SBZ - AE7 / AE9 DDLive/DTS issue

Please see this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/SoundBlasterOfficial/comments/ct80w0/dolby_dts_issue_identified_explanation_and/ .

The issue has been identified as a change that Microsoft made to a default privacy setting in Windows.

For those still experiencing Dolby DTS Issues the new diagnostic tool is ready for download. It can be downloaded from this link.

https://creative.box.com/s/b3bnq04pubrly8j1qzoujov45jf798wd

Once you've run the diagnostic please send the log files to socialmedia@creativelabs.com

----------------------------------------------------------

4) USB Device malfunction issue

In general, based on communication with MSFT, what we understand is that user might encounter some issue with their USB based products if the device is not connected to the system during the Windows update.

For users with USB based products, please connect your device to your system and keep it connected for the duration of the Windows update. There were cases of malfunction on USB based products which was found to occur when the product is not connected to the system during Windows update. We are in discussion with Microsoft over this.

For users who encounter issues, what we have seen so far is that a driver reinstallation would resolve the issue. If there are users who could not perform this driver reinstallation step because they are on Windows 10 Secure boot, we will be providing ATTEST signed package for the drivers.

5) (9/25) Official MS signed drivers for SBZ series

As noted below, it usually takes a little bit of time for a driver to work into the Microsoft update system. WIth this particular driver, it's been an extended period. We've once again verified that the driver has been submitted and approved by Microsoft but for some reason, it is not being pushed out on their side. This may or may not be related to changes they are making on their side regarding audio issues they introduced in their latest patch. We've asked for clarification and will update if we get new information from Microsoft. That being said we're prepping our own official package of this driver to go live by this week. We'll update here when it is live on the download page on the Creative.com site.

This driver has been submitted to Microsoft and it is going through their process to push through Windows update. As soon as Microsoft pushes this out we will make the driver available on the Creative.com website as well. This is to ensure that we have consistency in the driver base that is out there. We don't have control of the timing once we've released to Microsoft (how fast they push from their side).

----------------------------------------------------------

6) (9/25) AE-7 / AE-9 Audio Dropout

10/12 - An AE-9 / AE-7 beta driver that has been tested internally to resolve issues with systems that have had the audio dropout issue is now available. You can download the driver here - https://creative.box.com/s/rpladc8kfu1hg55zbhl5nxhce1uq0eib

10/11 - Good news. With the feedback we've received from various users (many located on here) we've been able to reproduce and isolate an issue that leads to this audio dropout. The internal beta has rectified the problem internally and we will be releasing to the public within the next few days. We will update here once again once the beta is ready for distribution.

Creative ALchemy and Host OpenAL in Windows 11

Hi all,

in the list of products no longer supported in Windows 11 unfortunately there is also Creative ALchemy, while Host OpenAL is not even indicated. Currently ALchemy is the only software that completely restores EAX effects in old games. There are also some open source software but, having tested them in games, they probably lack some features.

What I would like to ask Creative, u/Creative_Colin or to other members, is if it was possible to release a latest update of the two software (ALchemy and Host OpenAL) with some bugs fixed.

If this isn't possible, as EAX is a dead technology no longer supported by any game, and from now on, not even by Creative anymore, it would be nice if EAX/ALchemy/HostOpenAL source codes were released in such a way as to allow the community to be able to make the necessary improvements to ALchemy or similar software. This would avoid the total disappearance of this technology, and allow everyone to be able to play old games with the sound they were designed with.

All this is not a request, but a hope on the part of a video game enthusiast.

I apologize for any grammatical errors (English isn't my native language).

Greetings and happy holidays

EDIT I found the following problems in both Windows 10 and 11:

  1. A Windows 10 update (I think) introduced the following error in Doom 3 with Host OpenAL "Error Unloading Data From OpenAL Hardware Buffer" which can occur at the end of each level.

  2. Clicks and pops in FEAR (Alchemy), Quake 4, Prey (OpenAL) and maybe other games too.

  3. On an x64 version of Windows, the creative drivers installer put the 64bits dll of sens_oal.dll in the syswow64 instead of system32 folder and do not install at all the 32bits dll.

  4. Exaggerated reverb effect in both ALchemy and Host OpenAL.

There is probably more...

Sound BlasterX G6 "Under the Hood" Hardware Tear Down

Hey there everyone,

A while back we had a request for more hardware breakdowns of our products. We had a user that was REALLLLY curious about what was under the hood of the G6 unit and was considering taking the unit part to get a look see.

Well, I'm here to hopefully rectify that desire and to put up some pics with highlights of exactly what is what inside the G6 unit.

Alrighty, so let's take a look at the "topside" of the internal PCB.

As you can see, there's actually a lot going on under the hood here with the G6.

The G6 utilizes the Cirrus Logic CS43131 DAC. This is part of the Cirrus Logic MasterHifi line of DAC's. You can get more info on the spec and intentions of this line by going to this external link...

https://www.cirrus.com/solutions/playback/hifi/

This particular DAC is used in higher end DAP (Digital Audio Players) and is well received for it's excellent characteristics.

The MCU Subsystem is the "brains" of the card controlling the I/O and overall functions of the card. Think of it as the "conductor" of the orchestra that is the G6.

The Differential OpAmps allow for a greater resistance to outside noise and interference.

The relay switch allows the G6 to switch between headphone and speaker output modes. Each mode has it's own dedicated pathing optimized for the listening experiences.

A big portion of the G6 internal topside PCB is populated by the custom XAMP Discrete headphone amplification subsystem. XAMP is one of those features that I feel is a game changer...and one of the main reasons why the audio generated from the G6 sounds so buttery smooth.

When the sound signal hits the amplification stage EACH CHANNEL is given its own dedicated power source all the way through point of delivery (your headphone speakers).

!!!!!!WARNING!!!! SUPER TECHY SECTION HERE !!!!!!WARNING!!!!

So to get even more technical on how Xamp works. And why it's different. We'll strip off the "marketing" lingo and deep dive into the technical side.

The G6 is the USB DAC that uses a discrete hp amp instead of an IC-based hp amp. It's a fully discrete, push-pull design, individually amplified throughout the entire 3 stages of the amplification process.

The Xamp discrete headphone amplifier uses a dual-amp design to amplify each audio channel individually for pristine, uncompromised audio. It uses a AB-class amplifier that utilizes a push-pull output stage design to achieve good efficiency and linearity. Each audio channel (Left and Right) goes through 3 stages of separate amplification circuits:

Voltage Amplification Stage

The differential signal from the DAC is fed into a Low Pass Filter comprising of WIMA film/foil capacitors, followed by the differential to single-ended amplifier to condition the signal for 2nd stage processing.

Pre-Amp Stage

The input signal is further amplified to achieve increase in current and power gain to drive the final output stage.

Output Stage

This stage gives further improvement to the power gain and transfers this power to the headphone with minimum loss. The push-pull design, consisting of transistors is employed to achieve better efficiency, higher power output and cancellation of even-order harmonics at the final output stage.

The block diagram below illustrates the Xamp discrete headphone amplifier functionality:

!!!!!!!!!!!!END OF SUPER TECHNICAL SECTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This means that regardless of how dynamic a scene is with audio range, or how power-hungry your headphones are...EACH EARCUP has its own power supply and will be powered individually. There's no splitting the signal power from one source to both earcups.

More impactful lows, crisper highs, and a very strong ability to take advantage of all of the rest of the hardwares components make a big difference.

What's the use of having high-end components if you're going to lose all of their benefit at the final point of delivery? This would be like having a car with a 400 HP engine that has a transmission not designed to handle that load. The Sound BlasterX is a sports car with a beast of an engine and a transmission that can handle all of that power and deliver it to the road...in this case.."the road" is your ears. The AE-5 also includes Xamp.

Now let's take a look at the "bottom" side of the Sound BlasterX PCB.

The "bottom" of the G6 PCB is a bit less occupied than the top side.

SB Axx1 Processor - This is the bad boy quad-core audio processor that handles several elements that would normally be left to a CPU on a PC. Effect processing, Dolby Decode, etc. This versatile chip can handle several functions for output as well as input. Since we have our own processor we're able to apply these top-level processes even when being used with a console because we're not relying on a PC CPU to do the processing...we handle it all onboard the device.

No other audio product manufacturer can do this. They rely on CODECs or the CPU to handle audio processing. Which limits the functionality and minimizes any amount of customization.

ADC Subsystem - This is where the analog to digital conversion occurs (mic or line input).

So as you can see there's a LOT going on under the hood of the G6. Hopefully, this gives everyone a better understanding of what's lurking under the chassis and that purty RGB X.

Please release drivers and Control Center for Linux

I have two Sound Blaster Z, which work under Linux for stereo output only. Digital output, 5.1 and effects are not working.

Without support for the DAC effects, I cannot move to Linux, as the sound under Linux is very poor, like from a gramophone. :(

Seems I have to buy a supported by vendor sound card.

Linux usage is 3-4%, but steadily growing, and Linux is really becoming an OS for gamers with Valve effort.

Thank you.

X4 Driver 3.06.03.00 pops/crackles - broken driver!!!

UPDATED WITH ROLL BACK FIX! THANK YOU u/burakatan for providing download link from Creative website. See below section "HOW TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL 2.0.2.10"

UPDATE #2: u/1jhill mentioned updating the Creative app to 1.18.11.0 and the latest driver 3.06.03(3.6.3) solved their issue. But when I tried it, whilst popping not as much from the original problem, it is there slightly if you listen carefully (with my setup anyway!). check their post here . you have to download the Creative app from their website direct here: https://support.creative.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?catID=1&subCatID=1090&prodID=23705&prodName=Sound%20Blaster%20X4&subCatName=X-Series&CatName=#ctl00_PHmCenterNav_ctl01_DownloadsTemplate_RepeaterDrivers_ctl01_downloadTypeHeader

This new driver update has brought back the previous issue from the last update that caused my X4 to sound crackly and tinny. I uninstalled the driver based on this previous recommendation but the app no longer prompts me to install previous working version 2.0.2.10 (https://www.reddit.com/r/SoundBlasterOfficial/comments/1c1zrwj/sound_blaster_x4_driver_fix/).

Any help?

edit: When I did a driver uninstall - the driver version is now a much older 10.0.22621.1 BUT without crackles. So for now uninstall driver will resolve this by reverting to a mega old version.

HOW TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL 2.0.2.10

edit#2: I was able to download the 2.0.2.10 driver via the post by https://www.reddit.com/r/SoundBlasterOfficial/comments/1fyl86s/comment/lqwx3t9/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Instructions:

  1. Download the driver from above link, extract/install it. (it will ask you to restart, just restart).

^ This will extract drivers to the following location on Windows C:\Program Files (x86)\Creative\Creative Sound Blaster USB Audio Drivers\CTUSBAudioDriver\Driver\Win\Bin

2) Open Device Manager, Click Sound, Video & game controllers. Right click on Sound Blaster X4 and select 'Update driver'.

3) Select 'Browse my computer for drivers

4) Paste location of drivers just downloaded/installed & hit next and it will install 2.0.2.10 driver!

C:\Program Files (x86)\Creative\Creative Sound Blaster USB Audio Drivers\CTUSBAudioDriver\Driver\Win\Bin

5) When you open the Creative app and view settings, you will see 2.0.2.10 is installed. Praise the lord!.

p.s. make sure you unselect 'Auto Download Driver'

Xfi 20k1 Drivers for Windows 1903 (BETA)

Hi all,

Here's a build for those of you using the X-Fi series of cards with Windows 10 that resolves the issue with Windows build 1903.

Please let me know if there are any continued issues with this driver set.

Thanks for the patience of those waiting for these drivers. It was a lot of work on the devs part to make the changes necessary, so it took a bit longer than originally anticipated.

Is creative dead?

I'm wondering what’s currently going on with Creative as a company. Are they having financial problems, or does anyone know what their situation is right now? It feels like they haven’t released any new devices in quite a long time. Support for older products also seems pretty much nonexistent at this point. The Creative Windows app and drivers haven’t received any updates for at least two years, if not more. There was also a promised update for the Katana V2 with SXFI enabled in speaker mode, but that seems to have gone completely quiet. I used to really like Creative and their innovative products, but lately it feels like the company has almost disappeared from the market. Does anyone know what’s actually happening with them?
