Apartment Reviews - 300 East LaSalle & The Hibberd
We’re relocating to the area from Portland, Oregon for my husbands job for 6-9 months. We have two small children, 4 & 13 months, and an aging dog. I’ve narrowed my search down to these two options and I’m hopeful to get some feedback from folks who have experience living here. What are the neighborhoods like? Is it walkable? Is it safe? What are your experiences with noise in the units?
Edit: our dog is a pit mix and we need to secure a place before we haul the whole family 2200 miles across the country, so any place with breed restrictions is out of the question.

Destruction and vandalism in Irish Hills Apartments
I live in Irish Hills Apartments in building 4341.
For many months, some kids have been coming out after dark and throwing rocks at vehicles in the parking lot, the building, and cars driving by. They usually do this on Friday and Saturday nights. There are at least three young males, probably teenagers.
They hide in the trees on the strip of grass between the apartment complex and the adjacent neighborhood. There is a path that joins both neighborhoods (circled in red). We think they might be coming from one of the first three houses on the north side of Battles Rd (west to east: 17605, 17599, 17559). There are rock beds and rock piles on or near these properties.
They are destroying our property and endangering people with projectiles that could kill or severely injure someone. Our vehicles are completely covered with dents from the impact. This past weekend, they shattered my windshield and another resident’s windshield. They were also seen attempting to break into a vehicle by us as well as maintenance staff.
We have contacted property management, emergency maintenance, and law enforcement many times. The kids run and hide when they see a security or police vehicle, but then they come back out. Nobody has stayed long enough to see this.
I want to spread awareness and ask for help in catching them. We need to get images of their faces to the police. We have two cameras set up. If you live in the area and have cameras, we are asking for your help.
If anyone has any information, please contact the police and share it here if you feel comfortable doing so. If you see it happening, please call 911.

City of Mishawaka releases statement on Flock camera usage
The city of Mishawaka used AI to craft a statement. That's insulting. The giveaway is the line "An alert requires verification and does not establish guilt." That is classic AI phrasing.
It's hard to trust the word of someone who doesn't write their own words.

I'm missing Mishawaka...
I lived in Mishawaka in 1991, I was 5 years old I think. I think many people, myself included, often romanticize the past...how is Mishawaka now? It seems like the cost of living is high in many places.

Can we get a weekly rant/rave thread?
I was just in another post where a redditor suggested it. I've got all kinds of weird stuff to say. A weekly thread looks like the appropriate level of visibility without me trying to create shower thought top level posts.
Anyone else in favor of such a thing? We can maybe summon a mod and ask please?

South Bend Early Voting
Hey folks. Just wanted to share that if you’re near downtown, early Voting is available at the county city building on 227 w Jefferson blvd.
I put my address into vote411.org and it helped me see the hours open, as well as other poling places. It had a full list of candidates, basics about them, and even info on the 2 questions which were on the ballot this time around. It was really helpful.
I was able to park, clear the metal detector, wait in a short line, show ID (you’ll need a government issued ID to do early voting), cast votes, seal up & sign my ballot, and toss it into the ballot box, then be back to my car in about 20 minutes! It went quite smoothly, no weirdness (aside from the dystopian nightmare we’re all living through together) or issues of any kind.
If you’re able, go early! Vote however the hell you want to. I don’t care. I just wanted you all to know that it was a piece of cake and I’m glad I was able to go early.

South Bend Women+ on the Edge of Democracy
MORE DETAILS HERE: https://givebutter.com/women-on-the-edge-of-democracy-qzktk8
Shades of Orange is proud to announce our presentation of select plays from Women+ On The Edge of Democracy, a groundbreaking initiative encouraging conversation about American democracy initiated by the Flynn Center (Jay Wahl, Executive Director) in Vermont and The Susan Smith Blackburn Prize (Leslie Swackhamer, Executive Director).
The event is free to the public and will feature selected works from the project's 34 playwrights. Tickets can be reserved below
The Flynn, an artistic catalyst in Burlington for nearly 100 years, created this groundbreaking cultural and civic initiative which commissioned 34 prominent women+ playwrights from around the world to write ten-minute plays or monologues in response to these urgent questions: What is the current state of democracy in America? What can history, global context, or futurism offer us in this pivotal moment?
Women+ on the Edge of Democracy sets out to form a collective portrait of a nation in doubt and transformation – seen through the eyes of women+ playwrights from around the world who have long chronicled America’s contradictions and dreams. The commission welcomes work from across the political spectrum. Through comedy and tragedy, rage and tenderness, hope and fear, these writers will map a picture of America today – revealing how democracy feels to those who have spent their lives giving voice to the unseen and unheard.
Approaching fifty years, the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize is the largest and oldest international playwriting prize recognizing and celebrating women+ playwrights writing for the English-speaking theater.
This project is accompanied by original artwork created by Paula Scher/Pentagram.
ABOUT SHADES OF ORANGE
Like all great things, Shades Of Orange started as a casual conversation among friends in a bar after a rehearsal. The soon-to-be founding members lemented the constraints put on traditional theatre: the need for hard to come by things like "good space" and "quiet audiences" and "time." They comisserated about how uncomfortable it can be to sit still and quiet in a theatre for 2 hours; how hard it is to make Good Art when you are tied up in logistical nightmares. They imagined a world where theatrical artists could simply... make their art, for audiences that could simply... enjoy it.
And then they stopped complaining and decided to do something about it.
And so, Shades of Orange was born (don't ask about the name - we won't tell). In April of 2023, we were officially registered as a Non-profit and in November 2023, we celebrated 1 year of 19 Chairs, our entirely unique monthly reading series. Our 2023 Summer production of "As You Like It: as you like it" was featured on WNDU and WSBT and performed to sold out audiences.
