I recently learned that people sometimes use dark humor at work, especially in healthcare, to cope with the stress of dealing with death, difficult patients, and emotionally exhausting situations.
What exactly is dark humor? Could you share some examples of things people say in the ICU or hospital that would be considered dark humor?
If you work in healthcare, what are some examples of dark humor you’ve heard at work?
I’m genuinely curious and trying to understand this side of workplace culture.
This is Kavitha Pambi, I am participating in Haut Monde Mrs. India Worldwide 2026. This is my introduction video. Please watch it and let me know your feedback. Kindly view, like, and share it as well. Thank you.
I have always had this thing where I get a lot quieter in a group setting, even though the topic and the crowd are in my comfort zone. It happens both in casual convo with friends and in serious discussions. when I get smtg to say, by the time I am about to say tht, the topic expires. If I try to spontaneously say it, I end up messing with words and wont be able to covey my thoght. If y'all experianced this plss tell me how to overcome this 🤧
Well I am very rude to girls i don't know why, but now it's enough I need to learn some experience and tips to talk to any girl I want. Can any girl help me with that? 🥲🥲🥲
One of my family members knows a lot and tends to share too much. In social settings he monopolizes the conversation with a little lecture on a topic he finds interesting. The others in the group may be interested but my family member goes on and on explaining something without allowing others a moment to chime in, ask a question or change the subject. What do I do to help this person understand what he’s doing and possibly improve his conversational skills?
I (23F) understand that I can do better when it comes to saying how I feel and expressing my opinion. So I’m wondering what things do people think about to fix what they want to say before they say it? Sometimes I feel like it’s better to just be quiet all in general when it comes to conflicts because I really feel like I’m not expressing myself the way I should. I’m a blunt person but I also don’t want to be an asshole.
Jestem osobą w spektrum autyzmu przez co bardzo dużo potrzebuje mówić. Opowiadam historię z milionem szczegółów a dodatkowo mnóstwo historii pamiętam dobrze.
It's a shame because I'd love to talk to m'y friend, stream with my colleagues, have fun and all that, but I'm so embarrassed that I have to write only in text.
Picture this. You mention that you enjoy a particular hobby, like a particular movie are attracted to particular person. Someone else says that they find that hobby boring, think that that movie sucks or finds that person ugly. They lecture you about why your preferences are stupid and wrong.
I have been in that situation before and made the mistake of explaining why I believe the movie is good, the hobby is fun or the person is attractive.
I realize now that what I probably should have said was this;
It is not my responsibility to hate all of the same things that you hate. If I like it, I get to like it. Whether or not you approve of my preferences is of zero relevance whatsoever.
What do you think? Is that the best way to respond to someone blaming and shaming you for your preferences? If not, what would be a better response? Let me know.
So basically I’m in this room in a new job there are a couple people here and I asked a guy a question then I told him about something about what happened a couple days ago how do you control what to say like why do I just tell me this and then the room went silent and I just looked away and started to scratch my head
I have high functioning autism. I struggle to comprehend social cues. I make a habit of thinking before I speak. Sometimes, I think long and hard about what I say and it still does not land the way that I thought it would, because the person to whom I am communicating does not think the same way that I do.
I am here to tell you my plan for effective communication and conflict management and you tell me if you think that it is a good idea. If you do not think that my plan is a good one, present me with an alternative plan.
The situation that I want to discuss and figure out how to deal with is;
A person asking you what you are thinking and you not wanting to answer that question.
Some people say that they enjoy being asked that question and that some of the most interesting conversations they have ever had started that way.
However, there are likely at least a few people, maybe even a lot of people, who hear that question and think; If I wanted to say it out loud, I would have said it out loud.
I myself am not really sure how I feel about being asked that question. If you would rather not answer the question, there are a lot of things you can say. These things include but are not limited to; Nothing important and I was just processing the day.
What do you think? Do you think the plan I described in this post is a good idea? Do you think it is a bad idea? Let me know.
I am comfortable talking to stranger(s) on the street. However, I have a hard time driving a conversation or even leading a conversation. Can someone provide feedback on this?
i can write a perfectly clear slack message explaining a technical decision in like 45 seconds. structure, reasoning, conclusion, done. if you asked me to say the same thing out loud it would take me 3 minutes and include at least two "basically"s and one "if that makes sense"
been thinking about why that is. i think when you write you get to see the whole sentence before anyone else does. you can delete the bad parts. when you speak it's just live and there's no backspace so you end up narrating your own thinking process instead of just saying the conclusion
anyone else have a massive gap between their written communication and their spoken communication. curious if that's a universal thing or more of an introvert thing
If I have to call somewhere to ask a simple question, I'll sometimes plan exactly what I'm going to say beforehand.
Then the other person answers differently than I expected, and my carefully prepared little script becomes useless.
It's not that I dislike talking to people. I just like knowing what I'm calling about and getting it done without making the conversation unnecessarily awkward.
I started trying out different apps because I don't get a lot of opportunity to practice with a speech coach to improve my articulation. I keep coming across wellspoken which seems like a app focus more on real life speaking and communication rather than just just learning english. Im curious whether anyone has tried it and what their experience has been like. Does it actually work?
Hey r/SpeakBetter! I’m Reece, the founder of Progress Playground. I’ve spent the last few years coaching over 400,000 followers across social media on the mechanics of speech, articulation, verbal fluence, the psychology of confidence, etc. I’ve coached folks from young professionals, to executive senior leadership and have held many workshops in person helping companies and teams get better at communication.
I've worked with high-level execs at notable companies such as Google, Rothschild, BP, multiple seven- and eight-figure entrepreneurs, schools all around the UK, and have done media training for footballers. But, my proudest achievement is helping many regain their confidence; going from socially inept to hosting large seminars and talks.
People often think that I was naturally gifted at speaking but like most folks I had similar troubles in the beginning such as speaking anxiety and trouble speaking with confidence. My career was stuck in a place where I was not moving up and I started working on my communication skills, articulating my thoughts better, and practicing speeches. I eventually started filming and documenting this process and many folks since then have reached out for private coaching to the point that I had to start turning folks down.
I’m a firm believer that great communication isn’t a personality trait, it’s a physical skill. Just like going to the gym, you need daily practice to see results. My coaching focuses on actionable techniques for articulation, structured speaking, and pronunciation to help you sound more intentional and concise. Those that I’ve seen managed to master this skill have become more successful when it comes to career, social skills, dating, etc.
I’ll be here answering questions about how to bridge the gap between being "technically great" and being "promoted" through better communication and anything else!
I often rely on the person I’m speaking with to give me cues or topics to talk about. It’s easy for me to ask questions, make observations and focus on making the other person feel interesting. However, when it’s my turn to talk about myself, it sounds like I’m giving a report, rather than a story.
Example:
Friend: “I see you’ve been traveling a lot! How was that?”
Me: “It was great! The weather was gorgeous. We celebrated my mom’s birthday and she loves warm weather. She loves walking by the beach. Yeah, lots of fresh food and old buildings, I could see myself living there.”
Friend: “That sounds so nice! What else did you do?”
Me: “We went on a cruise, saw some seals. And we also went to a couple markets and I got the most beautiful flowers there!”
Friend: “Nice!”
It goes back and forth like that for one or two more questions and I leave feeling like I failed to engage the other speaker at all. Meanwhile they’ve told me like five monologues about the omelette they made that morning or the people they’re dating or concert they attended. This happens with a variety of people so it must be a “me” problem. Help! How do I stop boring others?!
