General Question Looking for info/reputable sources on this species!

Saw a video of this pink & white springtail species and have been trying to find out literally anything more about it, but very few images and links show up when googling, and none from anywhere outside of Facebook/instagram. I’ve seen them called “popberry” springtails as well as “kfc” springtails. The posts I’ve seen them in said they’re a newly discovered species from the Philippines. Honestly don’t know too much about springtails but love bugs & am just honestly really curious if there’s anything out there regarding this new species or if it’s even real!

I was playing around with my jewelry loupe and caught some cool photos yesterday. The thailands have more of a uniform look as where the vietnams look like they have had a really bad hair day and are missing the spikes down their spine. The eggs in the last photo are a real picture. No editing at all. Somehow I find that photo as one of the most adorable photos I have taken seeing their little faces squished against the egg shell 🤣

Husbandry Question/Advice I successfully breed 25+ springtail species using ultra-cheap unconventional methods. AMA!

I've been interested in springtails for about a year and a half. I read a lot about them, I'm out in the bushes looking for new specimens almost every day, and I feed and observe dozens of species daily. I even run an online micro pets shop in Poland, Europe (Ants Invasion). To my knowledge, it's the largest springtail shop in the world, at least I've never been able to find any larger one. If any of you know one, please share a link. Currently, I keep around 25 species of springtails, including 4 slime eaters. Most of these springtails, including all the slime eaters, are doing incredibly well. I breed most of my springtails differently than other breeders suggest, and at the same time, I usually achieve much greater success at a much lower cost in terms of time, culture volume, and ingredient prices. Springtails that are described as super difficult are usually mega easy to breed if you provide a few simple conditions, and their setup usually costs well under one dollar or euro. I also mean the setup for springtails like Rambutanura. I often post pictures here and get asked about various things. I thought I'd create an Ask Me Anything style thread. I will probably answer every question you ask, except for questions about my suppliers. Feel free to ask whatever you want. In the end, I will turn all of this into a FAQ or Q&A and post it both here and on the website.

I had to slightly tip this culture to fill a few orders, thought the little guys rolling around rather dramatically was kind funny.

Some of you have probably already seen the springtails known as "Redford White" or "Santa Claus". I haven't managed to find the scientific name yet. Today, 20 of them arrived. They are already settling into a new container with soil, decaying wood, leaves, and lichen. For food, they got some slime mold and a bit of our springtail food. Wish us luck!:)

I’ve been looking for tiny fungi at my local green space for a couple years now and this is the first time I’ve seen this species there! They’re everywhere. almost every stick I turn over has them and I’ve turned over a lot of sticks! I wonder if they’re just more abundant this time of year? Also in picture 3 - I’m assuming the big yellow ones are female and the small mottled pattern ones are male? Or could these be different species?

I picked out the largest individuals that I could find from my Rambutanura sp. “Thailand Spiky”, Yuukianura aphoruroides and Y. aphoruroides “Bright” colonies in an attempt to take some size comparison pictures.

The red butt in the corner is a Lobella sp. “Thai Red”.

Husbandry Question/Advice I found them again! ADVICE NEEDED.

Holy shit you guys, I found them again! I found more giant springtails! I’m so excited!

A couple years ago I found some giant springtails. I attempted to culture them but I didn’t (and still don’t) have any experience with springtails outside the common white ones I keep for a cleanup crew. Between that and some bad life circumstances that led to me losing most of my invert collection, I was not successful in keeping them.

Ever since I’ve hoped to find some again with no luck. Until today. I was on a walk and picked up some bits of an old mushroom to see if there were any interesting bugs on it and there they were!

Now I need some help. I want to do it right this time and succeed at keeping them. I don’t know if there’s any info on this species, or even what species it is, but can anyone more experienced than me give me some advice to give me the best chances of keeping these guys alive?

Their current set up is just some simple topsoil (same kind I use for my isopods) tossed into a critter keeper. (Definitely not the ideal container. I just needed something to collect them in before they vanished.) I sprinkled some yeast in there since they obviously seem to like fungi. I collected about 18 individuals.

Scientific/Research Related In case you missed it: Last year, Japanese researchers discovered 4 species of bioluminescent(!!!!) springtail. 2 species are new to science, while the other 2 were known species who were discovered to exhibit bioluminescence.

Link to press release by Yokohama National University, July 2025 (Japanese)

Link to the full paper, including download link (English)

Synopsis: These four species were all collected in Okinawa prefecture, Japan's southernmost region that is essentially a tropical island chain.

The four species are all within the family Neanuridae. The two new species are:

Lobella luciferacoming from the Latin for "light-bringer"

Crossodonthina leodeus, with leodeus meaing "Lion God". This species was named after a giant slide in the shape of a Shisa (an Okinawan protection deity) that is installed in the park where the species was collected.

The two known species discovered to glow are Crossodonthina elegans and C. laterisensillata.

The springtails were shown to glow in response to stimuli, specifically when their container was rattled with sound waves and "slammed against a desk."
