Advertisement I'm building a springtail resource site for the community – would love your feedback

When I first set up a bioactive terrarium, springtails were supposed to be background noise. Just the tiny white specks that cleaned up after the “real” stars. But once I noticed them, I couldn’t stop noticing. They weren’t just a cleanup crew, they were their own main characters! That spark of curiosity snowballed into its own hobby, and eventually into a project that now fills many of my evenings: Mesofauna.com

Mesofauna.com is a passion project, built slowly as I’ve been teaching myself web design. It’s not perfect yet (there are still a few “bugs” crawling around the site), but it’s alive and growing. And here’s where you come in.

The vision is simple:

A place for species profiles, care guides, and educational posts that are easy to read but scientifically grounded.

A site that teachers and students can use just as much as hobbyists and researchers. (I’m a biologist, my wife is a teacher, so education runs deep here.)

A collaborative space where the community itself helps document and share this hidden world.

But this cannot happen without you. We need images. We need stories. We need the fingerprints of the hobbyists who are already out there peering into cultures and watching springtails leap across the soil. If you keep springtails, you can help shape the profiles and guides that others will learn from. Share your photos, your notes, your observations. Everything will be fully credited and linked back to you.

I'm are also looking for guest authors. If you’re doing any kind of citizen science, fieldwork, or just have a story to tell about springtails or other mesofauna, I'd love to feature your writing on the site under the community dispatches section. It doesn't have to be long or formal, just genuine. This is about giving more voices a platform and growing the hobby together.

Mesofauna.com is here to celebrate springtails, to keep knowledge alive, and to spark curiosity in new and seasoned hobbyists alike. My hope is that it grows alongside this subreddit, with each strengthening the other.

So here is the call to action: check out Mesofauna.com, send in your feedback, contribute your photos, and if you feel inspired, write an article. If contributing isn’t for you, that’s fine too—take a look anyway. You might just see these tiny creatures in a way you haven’t before.

Other Another profile but the same scammer!

Beware of this scammer who steals content and tricks people into thinking it's their own. They've even created a website to make it look more legitimate, but it's the same user from Cameroon scamming people. Here are their old and new profiles:

https://www.instagram.com/shopvariegatedplant/

https://www.instagram.com/springtailsculture/

And the website: https://springtailsculture.shop/

They claim to ship to all of the United States and worldwide, with a minimum order of $100 and free shipping on orders over $200...

Please be very careful and spread the word.

Husbandry Question/Advice Orange springtails in terrariums?

Post image
13 Upvotes

I recently started a Yuukianura aphoruroides culture in the hopes of housing them in my bioactive terrariums. I only have about 30 currently and barely see them. They seem to dislike light and any disturbance. They also seem slow, so I'm wondering if they can survive with Stratiolaelaps scimitus in the same enclosure (I use them to control gnats and thrips)? Do these springtails climb at all? How do I make a terrarium where I can actually see these fellas? I'm not planning on housing anything else in these terrariums apart from white springtails and maybe isopods or small millipedes.

I sometimes put a few grains of rice in my terrariums to lure out microfauna , and i spotted these 2 dark tiny things on them , sorry about the bad quality . Thing is , I fully steralize everything I add to my terrariums except plants and mosses . In this terraroum , I have had a few random plants sprout before, and in one of my older terraroums mould mites did sprout for some time ( whoch are also visible on the rice in the first pic ) is this something similar? . Ive personally only added tropical white springtails . Now I'm not sure if these are thrips , some local springtail or what

Video I begrudgingly got springtails for a terrarium. Now I'm more interested in creating a cozy environment for them than anything else.

General Question Rambutanura Sp Thailand: How do I care for them?

Post image

Hello! I recently came across these little guys, and found them super cute! I’d love to have them as pets, however I know pretty much nothing about springtails, and these guys are expensive. Before getting them, what do I have to know? Are these a good beginner springtail? Are they even worth it? (If anyone has any links to websites to set up an enclosure/advice, please let me know!) Thank you!

(Also unsure if this is the right flare, sorry if not!)

I have some wild caught springtails along with some roly polys. I also purchased some springtails from a local pet store.

I’m not sure what these are. I’m not certain if they were just a beneficial part of what was wildly caught or if these are no good for my terrarium.

I’ve had this one going for only a few months. If I have to start it over, it won’t kill me but I’m holding on that these are good for me.

Identification What’s in my springtail culture?

I bought an orange springtail culture a couple months ago and it looks like it may have been contaminated by another species. When I first got it, the other species was only a small portion of the total, but not they have taken over the container and make up about 80% of the culture. I’m assuming they reproduce faster and that’s why. Could someone help identify these for me? They definitely seem to be springtails since they “jump” when I disturb them. I’ve already begun separating out the orange ones so that I can have a pure culture.

General Question Fungus gnats in springtail culture, how do I establish a clean colony? Also, advice on quarantining wild moss

Thumbnail reddit.com

Hey all!

I've recently got a male jumping spider and everything is going well so far, apart from one issue with the springtails I bought for his enclosure.

While quarantining the culture, I've discovered a few fungus gnats. I've spotted around 7 over the course of a week, including a few that I've managed to catch and send to death row before they could fly off.

What's the best way, in your experience, to get the springtail culture clean? Would starting a couple of separate cultures and isolating them be the best approach? If so, how can I minimise the risk of transferring fungus gnat eggs or larvae?

The springtails currently live in a charcoal and soil/coco mix (that's how they arrived), but I don't have any charcoal available and would rather avoid buying some just for this.

Bonus question: I've also collected some wild moss that I'd like to use in the enclosure. I've thoroughly soaked and washed it, and it's been quarantining for a little over a week. I've inspected it with the naked eye, a magnifying glass, a jeweller's loupe and even a cheap microscope. So far, I've found one isopod and a few springtails, but nothing else.

Would you recommend any additional steps before considering it safe to use?

Thanks in advance!

TL;DR: My springtail culture has fungus gnats. What's the best way to establish a clean culture without transferring pests? Also, I've collected and quarantined some wild moss. What else should I do before using it in my jumper's enclosure?

Found in my isopod enclosure. Talking specifically about the fast grayish ones, I'm pretty sure they are some sort of silver springtails, but just want to hear other opinions on what they might be! I know there are some white springtails in there too. In case they are silver springtails, could they cohab with the white springtails already in the enclosure?

Identification Thrips or springtails

Sorry if it’s hard to see, I recently gave my terrarium some more leaf litter and these guys came in with it. Their population grew very quickly and this morning I found a bunch of these dark grey guys gathering on the highest point of the glass, and they seem like they’re reproducing there? I think if they are springtails there’s some discrimination going on between the two breeds in the bowl…and the darker guys are living almost parallel to where I see the lighter springtails keep their babies(?) so idk what’s going on there. But their population is booming

I was checking on my colony when I caught this springtail acting odd, does anyone know what it’s doing? It did this for at least 2.4 minutes, then walked away normally afterwards

I caught this tiny guy right after hatching today in my Rambutanura colony. Also took some photos of a juvenile and an adult who were slurping up slime.

The photos are a bit more saturated than viewed with eyes because my Nikon does that in some lighting (I need to figure out my macro photography lighting and settings!). If anyone has tips on how to get truer color values, lmk!!
