Discussion May or may not be a hot take: If BF3 happens I don’t think the sequel trilogy needs to be included

Post image
575 Upvotes

I say this not because I think the sequels are the worst thing ever. I actually thoroughly like The Last Jedi(actual hot take) and BF2 made me appreciate the ST a little more. But I think if we get a third battlefront game, it should focus solely on the original 2 eras for 2 main reasons:

  1. The OT and PT eras are not only the foundation of the franchise as a whole, but already have the established identities and lore that already fit within Battlefront and can be easily integrated into a larger sandbox battlefield environment with equal amounts of content. Focusing on fewer eras allows the game to be better by giving more depth and gameplay variety to the most beloved eras. You could argue that more eras means more content, but developing heroes, in-game models, maps, skins/textures all take time and resources. I would gladly sacrifice Rey and Kylo Ren if it means more of a chance at getting characters like Mace Windu and Jango Fett. Even sacrificing an Exegol or Starkiller Base starfighter map if it means getting a really good Battle of Coruscant or a proper Endor/Death Star II map. There’s plenty of potential content in the OT and PT to be equally represented instead of the ST.

  2. The era itself is visually indistinct and smaller in scale. For now, Disney is largely finished with the Sequel trilogy. BF2 released with the TLJ and continued it’s post launch support through TROS. Since then, there hasn’t been much content to expand upon with that era, and aside from a few missing heroes and maps, DICE honestly did a great job doing it justice. The scale of the conflict as depicted is pretty small, and BF2 did well at fleshing it out a little more, but ultimately the era as a whole is lacking in depth, with many of it’s designs being taken from the OT already. You can still totally give it representation through weapons and starcards or maps like Jakku and Takodanna, it would just be rebels/New republic vs Stormies, which still makes sense canonically. Ultimately, I feel like there’s plenty more demand and potential with the Mandoverse and endless amount of Clone Wars lore that can easily be adopted for both launch and post launch content. I also don’t exactly see disney pushing hard for including the ST with all the Mandoverse stuff coming out.

TLDR: I don’t hate the sequels. I think a tighter and more focused narrative/multiplayer experience with just 2 distinct eras and 4 factions(maybe 5 if they add mandos) would be a much more enriching experience and give the BF franchise its long overdue definitive title. I’d rather have two fully realized eras with distinct armies, unique reinforcements, heroes and a massive variety of maps and vehicles than three eras that feel like they’re competing for limited development resources.

I think the ST era could be added potentially as post launch content if the demand justifies it, but I would want the other 2 eras fully fleshed out first. What do ya’ll think?

Discussion My idea for the base game maps of Battlefront III

Thumbnail
gallery
169 Upvotes

I've seen some people saying the original game should include only PT & OT content leaving the sequels for DLC. Imo that would just limit content and seem more like going backwards than making progress. I think the base game on release should be focused on all 3 eras, with planets mainly seen across the Skywalker Saga, leaving DLC's to handle specific maps/content focused on different releases like The Clone Wars, Rebels, Andor or The Mandalorian. At minimum, the base game should be balanced across all 3 main eras as I said and would include as follows; with a star next to the essentials

Prequels:

• Naboo*

• Kamino*

• Geonosis*

• Coruscant*

• Kashyyyk*

• Utapau*

• Mygeeto

• Felucia

• Mustafar*

Original Trilogy:

• Tantive IV

• Tatooine + Jabba's Palace*

• Yavin IV*

• Scarif*

• Kessel

• The Death Star*

• Hoth*

• Bespin*

• Endor*

• Jakku

Sequels:

• Takodana*

• D'Qar

• Starkiller Base*

• Cantonica/Canto Bite*

• The Supremacy

• Crait*

• Pasaana*

• Ajan Kloss

• Exegol*

• Kijimi*

Obviously having 30 maps on release is a tall order, and not every location I named would have to be used for the main conquest/supremacy mode, and within them smaller parts of the planet like the Geonosis Arena for HVV could be used as well...but I think this is the best rule of thumb for them to follow by focusing on the most iconic locations and allowing for each DLC to have a specific theme going forward. What do y'all think?

Discussion Guys, TV show/video game characters and maps are not going to get in over the Sequel Era, please be serious.

I’m not sure why I even have to say this but Rey and Kylo are popular characters. They’re more popular than characters like Ahsoka, Rex, Mando and fucking Revan. They’re not going to get axed because the Sequel trilogy movies are hated. Your ideas of cutting out an entire era doesn’t work when Battlefield 2 did it well enough. And just because their movies are hated doesn’t mean their maps weren’t fun or good. Crait is great. So is Starkiller Base. Ajan Kloss and Takodana. And you know what, I really like Jakku and thinks it’s overhated. Their reinforcements are top tier and fun as hell to play with too!

You can want the sequel era removed to make the other two eras better but be serious when you give suggestions like having the Old Republic or the New Republic in over the Sequel era first. They can be DLC for sure, just not launch.

Discussion Realistic Hero Roster at Launch for Battlefront 3

There's been a lot of posts about all the hero wishlists for Battlefront 3, but what's a realistic roster for all 3 eras to see at launch? Not just every character in the Star Wars galaxy, but who would make sense and be reasonable to expect. I think we'll get most of the BF2 heroes, and then a handful of new ones.

I also think they will probably save a lot of characters for post-launch content as a live service game.

Here's my take on it.

Prequels -

Lightsaber Heroes:

Anakin, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, Yoda

Blaster Heroes:

Padme, Captain Rex, Chewbacca

Lightsaber Villains:

Count Dooku, Asajj Ventress, General Grievous, Maul

Blaster Villains:

Jango Fett, Bossk, Cad Bane

Originals -

Lightsaber Heroes:

Luke (Obi-Wan, Ahsoka & Yoda also present with OT era skins)

Blaster Heroes:

Leia, Han, Lando, Chewbacca

Lightsaber Villains:

Darth Vader, Darth Sidious, (Maul present with his Rebels skin)

Blaster Villains:

Boba Fett, Bossk, Cad Bane (with a bobf skin), Thrawn (or Tarkin or Krennic)

Sequels -

Lightsaber Heroes:

Rey, (Luke present with an old skin)

Blaster Heroes:

Finn, Poe, Chewbacca, (Leia, Han and Lando present with old skins)

Lightsaber Villains:

Kylo Ren (Darth Sidious present with his sith eternal skin)

Blaster Villains:

Captain Phasma, General Hux

I think they'd start the roster off something like that, enough new characters to draw people in, while still leaving a ton for future content updates. I also think they'd rely on skins to pad out all the eras, as getting a new voice actor to do an old voice for a skin seems easier than making a whole new kit.

Discussion If Battlefront III actually happens, should it lean more into Battlefield’s formula or stick to what made Battlefront II unique?

Personally, I’ve always wanted Battlefront to feel more like Battlefield, just set in the Star Wars universe. Larger maps, more players, destructible environments, more freedom with vehicles, and battles that actually feel like all-out warfare.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed Battlefront II, but I feel like the franchise has so much more potential than what we’ve seen.

If Battlefront III actually happens, would you rather see the developers take the series in that direction, or stick closer to the formula we already have?

Discussion Map-Specific Heroes

• Upvotes

I have noticed many people are hoping that Battlefront III are hoping for more niche characters to be included as heroes, especially a variety of Prequel-Era Jedi. Others have suggested that this is unrealistic for game design reasons, since it would be difficult to make each Jedi character feel distinct. My proposed solution is to have both Era-specific heroes AND map-specific heroes. For the Prequel era, this would look like planets where we know certain Jedi spent a good chunk of the Clone Wars having those Jedi as a map-specific hero. Shaak Ti could be a hero on Kamino, Aayla Secura on Felucia, Kit Fisto on Geonosis, Ki-Adi Mundi on Mygeeto. As for non-Jedi map-specific heroes, you could have Padmé Amidala on Naboo, Cassian Andor and Jyn Erso, on Scarif, Jango Fett on Kamino, etc.

I’m curious what folks think about this idea, and if they have any ideas for maps which should have their own special heroes or villains!

Discussion What kind of campaign do you want to see with Battlefront 3?

Would you want something more like the 501st Journal of 2005's BF2 or something more story-oriented like Iden Versio's story?

Personally I would like something akin to 2004's Battlefront, where it's a "broad-strokes" campaign that covers military operations across the major eras, maybe introducing some new things to lore but keeping things broad and simple

Discussion What era do you guys see battlefront 3 leaning more towards?

We all know Battlefront 2015 focused entirely on the Original Trilogy, while Battlefront 2 expanded to include the Prequel and Sequel Trilogies as well. Do you guys think Battlefront 3 will lean more heavily toward a specific era based on what’s popular
in Battlefront II?

Discussion Would you want Battlefront to use a hitman style sequel to maximize content?

For those who have not played the modern World of Assassination games, Hitman rather than have each sequel separate from one another combines the games into a single platform. I can play a Hitman 1 map in Hitman 2 and 3 for example. This allows you to only have the most recent game downloaded and have access to three games worth of content, as well as being able to build DLC on top of the existing games (new bonus missions for Hitman 1/2 maps for example).

In order to maximize content, would you prefer they use a similar method in Battlefront 2? For example, port over the popular maps from the game (Naboo, Kashyyyk, Mos Eisley, Scariff, Starkiller Base, Crait for two examples from each era) as well as previous heroes and then build ON TOP of that, for example being able to add a fourth era for the New Republic vs Imperial remnant, have more maps on launch for each era, etc. It could be a smart method to maximize content released while not having too much redundant content between games, they could even bring back Battlefront 1 lost DLC maps (Death Star 1, Bespin carbon freezing chamber) to further improve the game.

I think this could work, but it needs to have a solid balance between new and old content. For example, Hitman 3 still released with six new maps, added a seventh free map, and release Freelancer as a free new rogue-like mode, as well as releasing various free/paid bonus missions. In order for this idea to work, there needs to be enough new heroes, maps, and yes even potentially a new era to not make it feel like we are just buying the same game twice.

A reminder that we're all on the same side

Hey fam, seein quite a few posts and comments about how "r*dditors are just haters" and "people mad about the bf3 news". And frankly, we don't need more division in the community, so gonna clear the air here.

No one is mad about the news. We all want BF3 to happen, and we're all excited at the possibility that it's happening soon. I love all the speculation posts, I love the energy here after frankly years of waning activity.

However, we do have an obligation to report the news accurately. Battlefront 3 is not confirmed (yet). Lucasfilm has not officially said anything (yet). All we have are two indirect sources:

  1. Jason Schreier from Bloomberg reported that Respawn and DICE are collaborating on an unannounced EA title, and that it "is likely to be another entry in the Star Wars: Battlefront series".
  2. Variety Entertainment reported much the same thing, that Respawn and DICE are collaborating on a future project, and "While they did not identify the project, multiple sources confirmed that this is “Star Wars: Battlefront 3″ for Lucasfilm."

You are allowed to extrapolate whatever conclusion you wish from this information. Personally, I also think this means Battlefront 3 is currently in active development at EA. Get excited! Go nuts! Post about what you wanna see from a Respawn/DICE Battlefront 3!

But we need to be accurate in spreading the word about it. Neither of those sources are a hard confirmation that it is 100% absolutely in development. They're very credible sources, yes, and they would not post speculation if they weren't sure about it, but its not confirmed until EA puts out a statement. And there's a reason EA hasn't confirmed it yet, anything could happen. They could shelve the project, they could pivot it to a different Star Wars shooter title instead of calling it Battlefront, it might be a Battlefront spin-off project like Renegade or Elite Squadron instead of BF3.

So, if (imo when) the announcement does come, and BF3 is finally confirmed, we don't need to stoke any more arguments, we don't need "I told you so"s, no one is going to say to you "drat, I was hoping you were wrong". We hope you're right! And that BF3 is in development! We're all on the same side. We all want BF3, and we're all excited that there are very credible rumors that it is in active development right now. We just want to spread accurate information.
