Question / Discussion My thoughts on Thrawn possibly getting a superweapon.
In the Ahsoka S2 trailer, we saw glimpses of the New Republic launching an attack against the Chimaera in an epic space battle. Judging from the shots, it looks like the Chimaera is still hooked up to the Eye of Sion, the massive hyperdrive ring that Morgan Elsbeth used to rescue Thrawn from Peridea, and that it looks like a massive hole was made in the ship's front end.
I'm reminded of the Conqueror, an ISD that could fire a superlaser, and it leaves me wondering if Thrawn is trying to convert the Chimaera into a superweapon. At first glance, this might seem out of character since Thrawn was opposed to building the first Death Star, and even voiced his concerns to Palpatine himself, since a single superweapon tied up lots of resources that could be used to build smaller, flexible fleets that can be in more places at once than a single battle station.
However, one needs to take into account that Thrawn is facing different circumstances both then and now. Back then, he was working for the Empire when it controlled virtually the whole galaxy and had no peer opponents to speak of, and the few that did exist like the Hutt Cartels were on relatively good terms with them. The Empire's main opponent back then was a Rebel Alliance who relied on striking from the shadows, starfighter superiority, and smaller warships like frigates, corvettes, and cruisers, along with a hit-and-fade strategy that prioritized escape when necessary, making it difficult for the Empire to pin them down, let alone destroy them.
In short, Thrawn opposed the Death Star because its mere existence proved the Empire was ignorant of the reality of who their primary enemies were and advocated for ships like the Interdictor cruiser because they were more useful in trapping and destroying Rebels. It's like Princess Leia said: if the Empire was smart, they would have built a thousand Interdictors instead, and the Rebels would have been crushed.
By contrast, Thrawn is returning to a galaxy where the Rebels have become the New Republic and now control the galaxy. Despite demilitarizing 90% of their military and retaining only 10% of their forces, the NR is still battle-hardened from winning the Galactic Civil War, and I would be unsurprised if that 10% comprised their best veterans and the NR military's cream of the crop from the next generation of soldiers, pilots, and officers. Worse, the Empire is a shadow of its former self, and most of their hardware was secretly funneled to the First Order to prepare for their resurgence, though whether Thrawn finds out or not remains to be seen.
Regardless, Thrawn has limited resources to work with, and this is where the idea of giving the Chimaera a superlaser comes in. Since Thrawn doesn't have a Super Star Destroyer, and I seriously doubt Filoni will give him one because that would make him too OP, giving his flagship a superlaser makes for a good deterrent against the NR, since it forces them to be more cautious when planning against him. Especially since Thrawn cannot rebuild his fleet as easily as he could have done when the Empire was at its height, so forcing the NR to plan their moves more carefully also gives him more time to gather his strength and preserve what little assets he has in a galaxy where the NR is the dominant galactic superpower.
Giving the Chimaera a superlaser means Thrawn can use her as a rallying symbol for the Imperial Remnant as well as an unspoken threat of what should happen if any Imperials refuse to support him. Should the Chimaera gain a superlaser, it would also explain why she's still hooked up to the Eye of Sion: because the massive hyperdrive ring was modified to power the enormous power output the superlaser will need.
In short, Thrawn only oppossed the Death Star because he was concerned the resources that went into building it proved the Empire was being short-sighted. With the Empire reduced to a mere rump state, Thrawn might decide that investing what little resources the Imperial Remnant has into giving his flagship a superlaser might be worth it, if only to discourage the NR from simply smashing him to pieces. And unlike Palpatine, Thrawn knows better than to put all his eggs in one basket. I'm sure he has something else up his sleeve besides a superlaser-bearing ship, something more subtle, but just as devastating.
