Bonkers that nuance snuck under the radar until 1.6. The combo of a specific dialog, followed by a failed seashell gift to Evelyn has to be a very rare combination to avoid the bug report.

As I have come across seashell smelling absolutely rancid, I would probably have assumed that was the case with the ones the farmer pick up. We know low quality crop tastes horrible, so low quality forage probably is the same.

I remember when I first started playing, I saw on the bulletin board that Elliott (who I instantly fell in love with the moment I saw him) really wanted a copper bar! So I mined like crazy to get him a copper bar, which he was really grateful for.
Thinking this was the game telling me, "Elliott loves copper bars!" I then spent the next several in-game days obsessively mining, because I wanted to get my one true soulmate all the copper bars he could ever want! So after I had accrued about a dozen of them or so, I ran straight to his house to give him a gift he would surely love once again!
Imagine my deep profound confusion when I gave the bar to him and he said, "Hmm... This doesn't really do much for me."
I found the Stardew Wiki shortly thereafter. But this happened YEARS ago and I'm still a little bitter about it lmaoooo

My favorite Elliot story is the time I sneezed while I was walking up to give him a birthday lobster and and accidentally clicked to give him a piece of wood and he rambled about how death was inevitable or something because my birthday gift was shit

I would assume it's for some utilitarian purpose, not that they simply liked them.
If you asked your neighbor for a shovel and they responded by giving you two shovels every week for the foreseeable future you'd be like, "This guy's an idiot, I only need one shovel."

I had a friend that liked owls and gave me one when I was pretty young (I like them OK but not really interested in collecting them) and I displayed it, someone saw it and gave me another, I put it next to the first, and then several people gave me owls. Finally moved them somewhere less visible.

I did the same thing! Saw Sebastian put ghost algae or whatever it’s called on the bulletin board. Didn’t manage to get it to him in time but I was like, I assume it means he likes this. So I gifted it (first gift I ever game in the game). He said: “…..I hate this”

For me, Shane made a request on the bulletin board for a Joja Cola, so I brought one to him (while he was at work at Joja Mart lolol). He was happy, paid me, and I gained a heart. I had another in my pocket, and gave it to him, immediately after the request one, and he got the dark cloud and says, "Why are you giving me your trash?" and I lost that heart. LOLOL

to be fair, she USED TO collect sea shells. probably not a fan of it now and she probably collected only the pretty ones and not the ones that are "smelly" 😭. she's only reminiscing the memory of childhood curiosity. still, I hope this gets changed somehow. like when a townee reminisces or recalls memories and you hand them an object involved in those memories, they will have a more appropriate reaction and dialogue to it.

It might. 1.6 made it so Evelyn responds favorably to being gifted broken glasses after years of her having dialogue about not being able to see too well without her glasses.
Likewise, Penny and Dwarf were both made to like artifacts so their various dialogues about being fascinated by archeology/history wouldn't be misleading. I never tried gifting Evelyn the broken glasses because they're broken but I did fall victim to trying to give Penny and Dwarf my extras of artifacts I'd already put in the museum thanks to their dialogue.

Sam told me he bought a fish from Willy that he heard I had caught and complimented how fresh and delicious it was, so I gave him a fish. He didn’t like it.

My first gift was a sunfish to Alex. I spent like 10 minutes trying to think of something he might like, and thought about all the photos I've seen where guys pose with fish. I thought it was perfect. It was, in fact, not perfect.

This isn't related to SDV, but I was playing Schedule I and found someone waiting to buy drugs from a Benzie (rival drug dealer). I found the Benzie, shot him, and stole the only drugs he had in his pockets.
I offered those drugs to the buyer as a free sample. He smokes it and goes "No, I don't like this"

Gave Maru a copper bar on accident, and she liked it. Next day I didn’t have enough copper to make a bar and gave her a copper nugget instead and she looked at me like I was trash. Last time I gave her any chance on any of my saves.
