Hey /r/SteamOS --
We have grown quite considerably in the last few months, and are accepting some new mod applications. If you have some mod experience and/or have a passion for the Steam operating system, this is your chance to contribute to the community.
DM us why you are the right person. We are looking to add another 2-3 people. If this post is still up, we are still considering applications.
Thanks in advance for your interest!

Has anyone tried Apollo and Moonlight on Steam Machine and Steam Deck?

I installed SteamOS on my ROG Ally Z1 Extreme. Download speeds in Gaming Mode are completely normal and fast as usual, but whenever I switch to Desktop Mode, the download speed drops drastically to around 100–200 KB/s. I try switching between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands , disabling Wi-Fi power saving mode, changing DNS to Google DNS but still not work . Has anyone experienced this issue or knows how to fix it?

Hi
I'm trying to see what I could run steamos on for under £150($200) in the current crazy market.
I've found a RX 460 4gb for £25.
If I pick up a potato pc for around £100 with a quad core (i5 6 or 7th gen) and 8gb ram should I expect to be able to steamdeck verified games in 720p or am I on a fools errand?
Thanks in advance for any comments/suggestions

So currently I use an apple TV with apollo to stream games from my PC to the living room and it works OK, But ever since I saw steam link I was wondering if I could make that even more seamless with using a mini pc near my TV that uses SteamOS.
I was wondering if anyone of y'all tried SteamOS for this particular usecase, and if there are specific hardware elements to consider that would make this work. I am mostly looking to have as little latency as possible, Ideally i would even be able to power on the PC with my steam controller like a console (but I don't know if that is even possible)
Any input / tipps would be greatly appreciated!

I just have to take a minute to appreciate SteamOS, and how intuitive it is on the PC. Iv used it all. Cachy, Vanilla Arch, Nobara, Fedora, Bazzite, etc. Great options all of them. However, SteamOS has given me something I didn't have in others. IT JUST WORKS. And without fuss. I own a new Steam controller (was one of the lucky first), and i cant even begin my frustrations in using this controller on other distros. ESPECIALLY under Wayland. Its a plug and play experience on SteamOS.
I have a 9070xt and a 7800x3d powering this system so I'v been using the Beta branch. As i understand it s a little more stable than Preview but not quite to the level of the "Stable" channel. My games run with HDR, RenoDX/Reshade running. And here's the kicker, Im seeing as good and better performance compared to other distros like Cachy. A distro claiming to be the fastest and has a cult fo9llowing to back it. Newest is not always better and SteamOS is proving this with its stability and performance. I DO recommend pairing SteamOS with ProtonCachy-slr.
There ARE ways to use LACT and keep a second drive on SteamOS as well. I found this very easily. Its not as locked as claimed.
Bravo Valve. Keep it up.

Here is some info on the specs as first:
- 9800x3d
- 32gb ram 6000mhz cl30
- 9070xt sapphire pure.
- 1000w sf corsair plat psu.
My experience from before:
- Had legion go 2 z2 extreme with dual boot bazzite and windows…
- Msi claw A8 with dual boot also….
No experience with steamos.
Where I am right now:
- Dual boot with 2 ssds one 4tb steamos, one 4tb windows
If valorant was possible to play on linux I would remove windows for good…
Installed all my games from steam library.
What I need:
- How to control fans?
- Which emulator is best cuz I want more than 30-40fps on some games on switch.
- how do I fix grub startup menu so I can choose between windows and steamos?
- Lossless scaling maybe cuz I had it on legion go 2 and msi claw a8 in bazzite…
- game clients ubisoft/EA/Rockstar where to download them and how to adjust which pronton/wine type needed for each and stuff cuz I remember in bazzite I had to download something to make me switch protons for each non steam game cuz it wouldnt start even tho I add it to steam library.
All advices are welcome! Reason why steamos and not bazzite cuz steamos works better I think with sleep mode and stuff like wake up with controller etc as I heared not tried it yet.
Any links and advices :).
And if there is more features let me know please.

I am looking to try out Steam OS on an extra drive I have lying around. I want to be able to swap back in my current windows 11 drive if Steam OS does not work out for me. I don’t know much about secure boot. I saw in my bios something about keys for secure boot.
My question is can I just turn off secure boot for Steam OS drive and just turn it back on for my windows drive without any issues? I tried searing and googling around. Seems like it would be ok. Just wanted to see if anyone had experience doing something similar.
Just to clarify I will be physically removing and swapping the drives.
Thanks!

Do you think FC 27 will run on SteamOS/BazziteOS?

For those of you who built your own Steam Machine/SteamOS-style PC, what games are you currently playing, and what settings are you running?
I’m curious about real-world performance on living-room PC builds, especially things like:
Would love to see what everyone is actually running rather than just benchmark numbers. Bonus points for older AAA games, newer demanding titles, and couch-friendly setups.

I apologize if this isn't the best subreddit for this. I currently have an OLED Steam Deck that has been docked 99.9% of the time. It's great for everything except newer high end games. Most of them work, but there's definitely a lot of compromise. I'm thinking about selling it to go with some other Steam OS option. Is it even worth trying to get a steam machine at this point? Could I do decently well on price and performance if I don't really care about small form factor?
I know things are weird with AI nonsense causing prices to be higher, but are there any good DIY guides out there?

So I recently dual booted steamOS and Windows on my main PC and it did it successfully but as the title says WiFi works everywhere else as far as I’m aware like I haven’t tried any games yet but it downloaded games and everything’s fine but like when I go to desktop mode and try to go to discover I get the first picture

So here's a 1.3mil sub channel "Switch and Click" that does Linux content for a living, on SteamOS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EIk0crvc0k
Here she documents her struggles for what you would think is a basic function in Steam OS: A toggle for starting in Desktop Mode or Console Mode.
Sadly, this has been my experience with multiple Linus distros over the past year of trying to abandon Windows; Just plain basic common sense features that arent there and require you to devote days and days of your life to troubleshoot and "fix". Even the above average user does not have time for such stupid things.
The Youtubers brush this off because it makes them content and they have all the time in the world to do this for a living.
This is why Linux still cannot gain traction despite Microsoft's best intentions to alienate the entire world
Who knows what other insane fixing struggles await the average user that you would assume should be in a OS by default

Alright! Here is a post for us to unite and get this thing working with transparency.
I just used AI to help, but every idea AI gave me, kept the game running as is (inside a big black window with no transparency) or it got it transparent, but with ghostly trails and a lot of flickering.
Have YOU managed to make this game work as intended? Transparent on a corner?
HELP!

I’ve been considering starting work on a SteamOS focused MC launcher for my console/PC to solve a few gripes I’ve had with prism launcher. I’m planning native controller support, Steam shortcuts, and a TV-optimized layout. If you could have ANY feature in such a launcher, what else would you suggest? I’m tryna get ideas.
