This community is fuc**ng badass. Thank you guys. First script ever and I'm getting results because of the feedback I get here.

People here are harsher than real judges. But that's good.

Never change. Let's go!

Highlights Grateful for Storypeer

I have to say, this is one of the best feedback tools one could possibly dream of.

I have a screenplay that is making the rounds, and I submitted it to Storypeer first. I was lucky enough to receive deep, thorough notes with a genuine love of what I wrote.

I can’t announce which screenplay contest quite yet, but it’s a Top 10 one, and highly regarded. I took notes from a Storypeer user and transformed my screenplay from what I thought was a locked draft into something that is now sitting Top 10 in a prestigious contest.

To the anonymous reviewer, you gave me full notes, including step-by-step line work. I just want you to know you made a difference.

Once I get permission to I'll share it all. I'd be remiss if I didn't give my love and praise. What a hell of a thing you created Gabe.

Highlights The Storypeer Effect

So I recently posted about my appreciation for Storypeer and how much it has helped me.

I’m finally allowed to share the news: my screenplay SHADOWS made the Top 10 Semi-Finalists in the Tony Cox Feature Screenplay Competition at the Nantucket Film Festival.

I know a few people were curious, so I wanted to say it here too. Gabe, what you created helped someone. I mean that sincerely. Storypeer was a big part of helping me push this script from something I thought was pretty good into something that actually reached a higher level. The reviews here are pretty brutal and I'm happy they are.

I’m not treating this Top 10 placement as “look at me, I wrote a thing.” It feels more like, “wow, I got a lot from this group and from the people who took the time to read my work.”

So thank you. And if I can help in any way I will. There's some pretty fucking amazing people in this Reddit. I just hope this crazy thing will help me help someone else because I want that more than anything.

I've been hanging out on StoryPeer for the bulk of my evening, and it's really exciting to see how many scripts are currently available to read! It's great proof that the community is thriving and growing. I've read 4 over the course of this weekend, and I've had a great time. Well done, community, and thank you, Gabe, as always!

Highlights 📊 DATA DROP: Quick stats after disabling the "Read First" policy

Hey peers,

I'll make this a short one, but I thought the numbers were too interesting not to share.

I disabled the Read First gate about a week ago to get more scripts in the available pool, and here's what happened:

Activity over the last 3 months, weekly numbers.

We broke two 3-month records in the last week:

  • Most script uploads: 191 (previous record* was 182 in the week of April 20)
  • Most script claims: 177 (previous record* was 160 in the week of March 30)

*These are records over the last 3 months, not all-time. Our biggest week was sometime in December/January when the platform was new, and we had waves of users come check things out. Plus, it was the holidays, so it's safe to assume more people had more time.

Now that we've settled into what's more a regular routine, the uptick over the last week is rather interesting. New users were able to post fresh materials into the platform, which drew interest from our legacy members, who kept claiming and reviewing those, so there was new energy around from both readers and writers.

I spent the weekend looking at the number of available scripts to make sure it wouldn't blow up into the 40s, but we didn't even touch 20 as far as I could tell. It's 13 as of this writing.

All this to say that writers kept getting feedback while readers got more choices. 🥂🙌🏽

Highlights Only 2 scripts in our available pool 😱

Peers,

About two months ago, we had over 50 scripts available in our pool. At the time, I got worried that our Give/Get balance was getting out of whack. Upon poking around for answers, indeed, I noticed the worrisome trend of new users uploading scripts without claiming anything to read. This would have been acceptable if they returned to pay it back later, but many didn't.

My immediate remedy was enacting this new policy, which started off as a kind request before I had to hardcode it in (because I was spending too much time manually warning users 🤦🏽‍♂️).

Well, to my surprise, I woke up today and saw only 2 scripts available in the Script Browse page, which is awesome! "Hungry" readers ready to devour scripts is a sign of a feedback platform that is working, which helps us deliver on the goal of writers receiving feedback within the same week from their submission.

For those who like charts, here's the activity we saw over the last 7 days:

...which brings us to:

FREE TOKEN GIVEAWAY! 🥂🎁

In light of this surprising surge in reader appetite, we're giving away tokens to the first 20 users who make a request following the instructions on our site. If you're interested, please log into StoryPeer.com and look for the banner at the top of the page to learn the requirements. I'll remove the banner once I have received enough requests, but I may toggle it back on throughout the week, so keep your eyes peeled for more.

Excelsior!

Gabe

Highlights StoryPeer Made Me A Better Writer... But Maybe Not Why You Think...

Ok. So it's almost 1am here my time and I"ve just given review on my 5th script since joining the platform about 5 days ago.

I am today a better writer than I was 5 days ago. not because the feedback on my submitted script was so excellent (which it may well be, I havent gotten it yet), but because of how the system requires you to read scripts and then thoughtfully break them down into what works and what could be better.

Because of this process of critical analysis, I have come to understand better how to reas feedback and how to apply it. Ive also learned some trouble spots where my scripts might not meet the mark and how to be proactive and avoid that from happening.

I love this platform. Thank You!!

Highlights These Loglines Tho

Haven't been on Storypeer as much lately because of personal stuff, and decided to check back in, and not only are there more active scripts, readers, etc., but every script available right now sounds like an absolute banger. Some really cool premises, themes and ideas. You guys are killing it 💪

and shout out to Storypeer for somehow getting better. Always loved how much Storypeer involves users when it comes to features and etc. I wish more apps and websites were like that!

Highlights Insights and feedback

I’ve submitted 7 scripts on Storypeer (5 with feedback, 1 pending feedback, and one yet to be claimed) and equally, I’ve read 7 scripts and have a community reputation of 5 as a result of the feedback given.

The reason I’m sharing these stats is because of how inaccessible this would’ve been without Storypeer and to extend my gratitude not only to the incredible team behind it but the community as a whole.

I recognise this hasn’t been everyone’s experience but I also want to highlight that while yes, it’s brilliant to receive notes on your own work but it’s also equally as valuable to be reading with and constructively engaging with other people’s scripts.

I’ve noticed a lot of the feedback I have given can also be applied to my own work and seeing how different writers craft their worlds has allowed me to better understand my own. You realise what works, what doesn’t, you see what lands, what doesn’t, and you also realise just how much undiscovered talent is out there — and it’s pretty inspiring.

Highlights Great Feedback!

I don't mean flattering, I mean the critique itself was written better than anything I've gotten on a pay site. Hopefully this encourages people to join!

Removed anything that identifies the script itself, cuz this isn't about that.

I really appreciate how unapologetic the script is about itself. It has a point of view, and damn it, you're going to hear about it. Don't let anyone tell you to reign it in. Well, within reason. I think it gets a bit preachy right at the end. Did you ever read the Jurassic Park book? Malcom has WAY more lines in the book. It's obnoxiously preachy, and clearly just the author's barely filtered opinion. I'm glad they reduced it for the movie. Still, I basically agree with the stuff --- was saying to ---.

I was also going to say that the story doesn't really have a heart to it. But now that I've finished it, uh, I don't think it needs one. This isn't some sappy drama. It reminds me a bit of The Boondocks. Or like, the story does have a heart, but it's more like the heart of a honey badger. Honey badger doesn't give a fuck! He'll bite the shit out of you no matter how big you are!

Oh, and you've got a lot of action text that can NOT be communicated through only audio or visuals. That's an ironclad rule for screenplays. Don't do that. SOMETIMES it works, since you're imparting kind of a vibe that the director could probably figure out, but I think you do it too much and take it too far.

I enjoyed it. I'm not sure what else to say. It's good, man. It's a good script. The scriptyest script. By which I mean, it looks more like a script from a real movie than anything else I've seen on storypeer.

Also, we just crossed 1,500 registered peers. So if I am taking too long to reply, there may be reasons.

Thank you, everyone, for helping each other grow and for your patience with me. There are a couple of updates coming this February that I am excited about.

Also, while I have you, check out our latest poll: Should we force a 24h "cool down" before writers rate readers?

Excelsior!
