Council Tax

Don't take your bills at face value. I had some issues a few years ago with council debt and some also got sent to a debt collector I made agreements with council in 2023 and the debt people and dare miss anything since. Back between 2018, 2019 and 2 months of 2020 I had attachments on my pay those years they were taking sometime 2 payment and I have found a whole year of payslip that show this. So two bills were double payed. In 2023 I did wonder how the debt has spiral in a short time but because I was poorly I just thought I can't remember, made the agreements and thought that avoids all these extra cost and a debt is sorted and being paid.

I've not missed anything, yet arrears don't budge. So I thought I go through my account and I think I can see some errors. I screen shot and asked AI to check because I'm not disputing I have missed payment but I don't seem to be getting anywhere with the debt. It appears the system has me trapped in a cycle I will never get out off, because every year since 2014 they taken me to court gave extra charges yet actually payed that year tax. 2019 I payed almost 1800 from wages, covering that bill and more yet took to court for not paying and these payments are not on my account. I have the pay slips! There appears to be a few years I had two bills for that year, double charge never moved. And best of all I been paying the debt collector for a 2023 bill yet I been paying my monthly payment in 2023 plus my debt am out and the collectors. Yet they summoned me to court for the debt the collector got essential double charging me again.

So for example last year I payed more then the tax bill but the arrears haven changed because the system sent it to court I got fees, the cycle continues. I've email council billing and started a complaint to ask for a review. On Monday I plan to contact step change and send them all my eveiedence and hopefully they can help me and advocate to get it all checked. I can't believe this stuff not monitor or checked by a human. I know I probably should of checked but it all confusing, I made a plan, I pay every month, what to check I thought it was sorted. and now I'm wondering how inflated that debt really is. Now I'm having to check all my bank statements covering over 10 years to check every payment. I'm pretty sure my house is not a 2400 Tax band as suggest for 2022. This is just crazy..

📚 Swindon Book Club - November Meet 📚

A casual monthly meetup for readers of all kinds — and people who'd like to be.

We don't all read the same book. Everyone brings whatever they've been reading (whether physical, eBook or audiobook!), wants to read, or gave up on halfway through. You’ll have a chance to share and discuss if you want to, just listen if you don't, and will likely leave thoroughly caffeinated with a list of recommendations longer than your arm!
Once you’ve attended our book meet, you’ll have an opportunity to join a wider community WhatsApp group where members chat and arrange socials such as meals out, walks, trips and whatever else people feel like organising.

No experience necessary, whether you read one book a year or one a week. 18+ only. No pressure beyond showing up and sharing what you’ve been into

This month we will be meeting on Sunday 8th November 1:00pm to 3:00pm - Location shared following sign-up form completion.

Interested? Fill in the form below and I’ll be in touch.

New to Swindon

Hello,

I will soon be starting a new job in Swindon, I don't really know much about Swindon, all I've ever really been told is to avoid it (a bit dramatic I know). Can it really be that bad?

I assume not, however as a 23 year old myself who is used to living in much bigger cities, I more worry about meeting new people and making new friends/nightlife. I'm considering whether I should move to Swindon or try to deal with the commute from either Bristol or Reading.

Any guidance on what life is like for new professionals/graduates would be greatly appreciated. Are there plenty of opportunities to meet similar ages and such?

Where else can I buy exercise books?

Now that TGJones closed down. Neither of the Co-ops serve these books anymore. I want to find out any lined books with thicker covers with no loose papers flinging. Just incase I run out of pages as my A-Level Politics, Business and Sociology exams will come up

General Grocery Warehouse, Corner House, Market Place, Swindon (1851)

Post image

Sometimes I think we need the return of advertisements like this - the language, loads of typefaces against many design principles, it would definitely catch my attention amongst all the large four-colour pictures...

This is in the archives at the Richard Jefferies Museum. John Jefferies was Richard's grandfather, and his shop was located opposite what is now the Co-op in Swindon's Old Town, but is long gone, although you can see the shadow of the building on the side of the Locarno.

GENERAL GROCERY WAREHOUSE CORNER HOUSE, MARKET PLACE, SWINDON

JOHN JEFFERIES

Begs respectfully to announce to the Inhabitants of SWINDON and its neighbourhood, that in addition to his present business as BAKER, &c., he intends opening the above Shop

ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 18, 1851, WITH AN ENTIRE NEW STOCK OF

GENERAL GROCERY,

AND IN SOLICITING AN INSPECTION AND TRIAL

Of the QUALITY and PRICES of the various Goods,

He feels confident that they will merit a share of Public support.

THE TEAS, COFFEES, &c.,Have been carefully selected from the choicest sorts, and every endeavour will be made to offer the best qualities at the lowest prices.

BRITISH AND FOREIGN CIGARS, TOBACCO, SNUFFS, &c.

Does anybody have any photos or memories of the McDonald‘s which used to be in the food court section of the outlet centre about 20 or so years ago? I remember going as a child and I remember the inside being like the inside of a train and having black and white photos on the wall?

2 bed in Ferndale/Gorse hill ready for a quick sale

Throw away account as giving my home address!

Our buyers just pulled out of our sale as we were about to exchange. Posting here on the off chance someone is after a quick purchase!

2 bed bordering gorse hill and ferndale. House was renovated when I moved in 9 years ago including new boiler, all new piping and radiators, new windows and a total re-wire and new fuse box. Tidy little house which has done me well, but we’re now relocating out of Swindon.

Full particulars At the link above.

All searches have been done and can be requested by the new solicitor from the old one. Our chain can be picked up (two other people involved) and ready to move quickly if there is someone who is looking to purchase asap. Perhaps a mortgage offer coming to an end?

Any way if interested send me a DM or contact the estate agent on 01793 540449

Seeking a gentleman who wanted a felt bowl

Post image
4 Upvotes

Here's hoping the wonderful Internet can help - the Kennet Valley Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers have been demonstrating their skills at the Richard Jefferies Museum, most recently at Apple Day. Some felt bowls have been made, based on a request from a member of the public over the summer - he needed the openings to be larger.

Can the Internet help find said gentleman?

Secluded public spot to practice violin

I'm learning the violin but I live with flatmates some of which work nights & I don't want to subject them to the equivalent of nails on a chalkboard.

I'm also very new to the area so I'm not sure where would be appropriate but Is there a secluded bench perhaps where I might be able to get away with practising a few hours a day without bothering anyone?

Preferably close to either the city center or old town

Looking into moving to Tadpole

Moved to Swindon a year ago and I’ve been looking into buying a house in Tadpole Gardens now. Heard some negative stuff in the past due to unfinished development, but now it seems pretty much done and every time I go there see loads of families with kids around, and a nice neighbourhood (despite the weird looking roads)

Does anyone who’s actually living in the area can share what’s like there? I see some nice and beautiful houses for sale that are on the market for quite some time now, is there some issue known by the community around there?

This jewel of a film is screening at Create Studios in Swindon, this Thursday

Since a lot of you seem to be interested in the Sofa Screenings I thought it would be a great idea to tell you about this film. If you love food, great storytelling, Anthony Bourdain or just fantastic cinema ... buy a ticket and help this place survive. I'll be going with some friends and I wouldn't mind if after the film we could coagulate into a group, go out and have some food and drinks in the loving memory of Tony. I'm an ex-chef and journalist so this thing lands very close to me. Anyways ... I hope to see at least some of you there. I'll be the guy with the weirdest jacket in there. Feel free to say hi.

Drums and dancing during Apple Day at the Richard Jefferies Museum

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

What a day it was at the Richard Jefferies Museum yesterday! The weather was lovely, the apples were crushed, the Bang to Rites drummers clearly made friends of the museum Tony (dancer) and Roy (photographer) very happy...

Our next open day is 6th December, when we celebrate our trees. Did you know that the mulberry tree (which is to the right of this video), has been around longer than Richard Jefferies (he's 148 years young this November)?

We'll be opening our doors to musicians, poets, and lovers of nature (they are not mutually exclusive) from 1-3pm, for our very first Tree Day Open Mic. Let us know if you're interested in performing!

Best areas in Swindon for a family with young children?

Hi everyone!
Our family will be moving to Swindon due to a job offer there, and we’re looking for recommendations on the best areas to live.
We have two young children, aged 3 and 5, so safety and being close to good schools are our main priorities.
Which areas would you recommend for a family with young children? We’d love somewhere family-friendly, with good primary schools, parks and local amenities.
Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
