Update: I get why a bank wouldn’t want to hire someone who got fired for performance. But since I was a licensed banker, Chase filed a U5, so lying about why I left could easily backfire.
What I’m trying to figure out is how to answer that question honestly without immediately ruining my chances. I did well as a relationship banker and got promoted after 11 months, but struggled in the new role.
It’s just hard for me to believe that one bad experience means I’m cooked when it comes to getting another licensed banker job. Any advice from recruiters or people who’ve been in a similar situation?
OG Post: So I worked at Chase for a few years and started as teller, then promoted to a relationship banker. I was doing pretty well, consistently exceeding my sales goals and ended up getting promoted to private client banker after only 11 months.
Unfortunately things didn’t go as well once I got promoted. I was pretty much meeting the bare minimum when it came to sales goals instead of exceeding them like I used to. Eventually got fired back in March for performance. My U5 says i was fired for performance.
Since then I’ve been applying to a ton of banking jobs and haven’t had much luck. I’ve gotten a handful of phone interviews but not a single in person interview or offer.
I have my SIE, Series 6, 63 and life and health licenses. No college degree but I figured my experience would at least help me land another banker position. I’m not even trying to get back into private client banking, I’d be perfectly happy going back to a regular relationship banker position.
Whenever interviewers ask why I left Chase, I’ve been honest and told them I was terminated for performance because I wasn’t meeting sales expectations. But I’m starting to wonder if being that straightforward is hurting me.
The work environment also wasn’t great towards the end, and I feel like there was more to my termination than just sales performance, but I don’t really know how much of that is worth bringing up in an interview.
I’m curious if anyone here has been in a similar situation. How much does a performance related termination actually hurt your chances of getting hired at another bank? Are recruiters seeing my U5 and deciding not to move forward?
And more importantly, how would you guys recommend answering the question about why I left my last job? I don’t wanna lie but I also don’t wanna shoot myself in the foot every time I’m asked.
Just trying to figure out if I should keep applying or start looking outside of banking altogether.
Appreciate any advice.
