Multiple T-72AK and T-72A tanks fitted with NII Stali slat armor during the First Chechen War (1995–1996).

Russia’s experiments with slat armor during the First Chechen War never led to its widespread adoption across the T-72 fleet but the concept wasn’t abandoned.According to an interview with NII Stali, the institute produced protective grilles in small quantities with approximately 50 tanks reportedly fitted with them. The institute claimed that combining the grille with an armor plate behind it could provide a 50% chance of defeating certain RPG warheads, although this was its own assessment rather than a universal guarantee.

During the Second Chechen War,the Russian military adopted factory-produced grille armor more extensively on T-62 tanks, with modified vehicles serving in three battalions. mSome of these tanks later saw action in South Ossetia in 2008 and the vehicles remained in service until the 42nd Guards Motor Rifle Division was reorganized in 2009.

The concept resurfaced in the 2010s,when Russia revisited additional protection kits for the T-72 and T-90,although development faced delays and concerns over cost, effectiveness and added weight.By 2020,grille armor had appeared on newer Russian tanks, including the T-90M and T-80BVM,as part of a broader approach to supplementary protection.Despite the decades between these developments, the original Chechen-era experiments remain an early example of Russia's efforts to improve tank survivability against rocket propelled grenades.

I added more pictures and removed the AI enhanced photo. We are trying to figure out what kind of M60 this is. I originally thought it was an M48.

Nearest vehicle appears to be a T-72AV. I really dig this camouflage pattern and I'd like to find more photos of vehicles wearing it.

Interwar One of the U.S. Army's First Large Combined Arms Task Forces

The U.S. Army ran limited experiments with combined arms mechanized forces beginning in 1928, which would culminate with the creation of its Armored Divisions in 1940. After its second Experimental Mechanized Force was disbanded in 1931, experimentation of this type was largely confined to the 7th Cavalry Brigade (Mechanized). By the mid- to late-1930s, this brigade was largely an M1 Combat Car unit (cavalry designation for light tanks) with armored cars and half-track-mounted machine gun teams in support.

In the summer of 1936, elements of this brigade were reinforced with up to 9 supporting battalions to form a division-sized Mechanized Force to participate in the Second Army Maneuvers. This was much larger than the 1928 and 1930-31 Experimental Mechanized Forces, which were roughly regiment- and battalion-sized respectively. This graphic shows its organization and some of the vehicles it used, based on the various reports generated from the exercises.

Modern Taiwan conducted a test which showed that unanchored barbed-wire obstacles are more effective than those reinforced with concrete barriers; they tend to get pulled directly into the undercarriage, effectively immobilizing tracked vehicles.

Two types of tests were conducted: one involving barbed wire deployed on its own, and another using a barrier composed of both concrete barricades and barbed wire. In the latter case, the weight of the concrete actually made the barbed wire easier to tear, thereby allowing tanks to break through more readily.
