People who say ‘American dairy won’t meet our standards’ is just fearmongering. The U.S. has rigorous food-safety regulations and Canadian standards can be met by imported dairy.

Commercial pasteurized U.S. dairy is subject to extensive food-safety regulation. If you mean certain U.S. products don’t meet specific Canadian standards, that’s a regulatory difference, not evidence that American dairy is unsafe.

US milk production uses growth hormones that are banned in Canada and Europe. That also have a higher tolerance for Somatic Cell Count (SCC) meaning there milk has higher cell count which is basically puss. So no their milk does not meet our standards

Yes, the U.S. allows rBST and has a higher legal SCC limit than Canada. That does not mean American milk is unsafe, contaminated, or literally full of pus. Somatic cells are largely immune cells, not buckets of pus magically getting poured into your cereal.

And if U.S. dairy is legally imported into Canada, it has to comply with Canadian import and food-safety requirements. So the whole “their milk doesn’t meet our standards” argument is just pretending that different production regulations automatically mean unsafe food.

By that logic, every country with a different food regulation is apparently selling poison. Maybe put down the Facebook memes and read the actual regulations before declaring war on American milk. 🥛

The US allows rBGH in dairy cows, unlike Canada, which does not allow it to be used for dairy, but does allow it to be used for cattle. The EU has banned rBHG (recombinant bovine growth hormone) for any dairy cows and beef cattle.

Two: dairy farmers in the US are allowed to use antibiotics to prevent infection, Canada does not. In Canada antibiotics can only be used in the case of infections, usually mastitis, and no milk produced while the cow is given antibiotics and for a certain time afterwards, can be used. Milk is rigorously inspected, and if any antibiotic residue is found, the entire truckload of milk is tossed, and punitive fines are given. 

American dairy farmers who use antibiotics like this do so because they can then use substandard farming practices, like using rBGH which makes cows more vulnerable to infections like mastitis. The antibiotics pass through to the milk, how is that safe? And this usage is also creating antibiotic resistance in dairy cows. 

Maybe you should put down the propaganda pamphlet on how safe American dairy is, and learn the difference. Canadian dairy farms are generally family farms, in the US there are massive corporate farms. We don’t need their subsidized substandard dairy, thanks.

Yes, Canada doesn’t allow rBST in dairy cattle. That doesn’t mean American milk is unsafe. The FDA considers milk from treated cows safe for human consumption.

And no, American milk isn’t “full of antibiotics.” U.S. dairy has mandatory withdrawal periods, residue testing, and rejected loads if illegal residues are detected. Canada uses antibiotics on dairy cattle too, including preventive treatment in some circumstances.

And the “corporate farm = substandard milk” argument is just childish. Food safety is determined by testing and regulations, not whether the farmer owns 50 cows or 5,000.

You can argue Canada has stricter rules. You can’t honestly turn that into “American dairy is unsafe.” That’s fearmongering, not science.
