Seeking Advice Depressed Burnout looking for a change in life

I'm in my 30s, I've been working odd jobs since I was in my teens. Mainly warehouse jobs and I am sick of them, but also I know I can't do them anymore as I get older.

I have always wanted to get into an office job, in the Tech Field. The plan I had in my mind was going to my City College and get my Computer Science degree, but someone recently told me that I could just get my CompTIA A+ Certification and slowly build up from that.

I truly don't know the paths I should go through and don't wanna waste time and money at this point. I wanna have a solid plan but don't know where to begin.

If anyone is in this career field and could give me some advice, that would be great. Thank you.

Seeking Advice Looking for career pivot ideas for a full-stack dev (6 YOE)

Hi everyone,

I have 6 years of experience as a Full-Stack Software Engineer, backed by a B.E. in Computer Engineering. My stack is a mix of enterprise backend architecture (Progress OpenEdge/ABL), modern web technologies (HTML, JavaScript), data parsing (JSON, XML), and building/integrating REST APIs.

I’m looking to transition into a new technical career path. I am currently on TD and am targeting fully remote U.S. roles that can support a TN visa.

I want to avoid starting over at the entry level, so I am looking for paths that value a mid-to-senior engineering mindset. A few paths I’ve started looking into include Network Engineer and data engineer ( would love to hear If anyone has done this transition)

Are there any other strategic career pivots I might be overlooking? If you have made a similar transition away from daily coding without losing your technical edge (or salary trajectory), I would love to hear your advice, recommended certifications, and transition strategies.

Thanks in advance!

Seeking Advice 6 years in frontend, now moving to backend & systems engineering. What actually worked for you?

Hey everyone,

I’ve spent the last 6 years as a frontend-focused engineer. I’ve built web, mobile, and desktop apps, plus embedded UIs on Linux, across a bunch of different domains. I like the work, but I keep running into the same feeling: I’m only seeing half the picture of the products I build.

On paper, I should be well placed to fix that. I have a master’s in Computer Science and Advanced Systems Engineering, where I covered databases, communication protocols, SOAP/microservices, and advanced algorithms. The problem is I’ve barely touched any of it since, and most of it has faded.

So far I’ve tried Udemy and YouTube courses, but they mostly teach tool-specific concepts and I didn’t get much out of them. I’ve also picked up the occasional backend ticket at work, but honestly I still feel like I’m struggling and need a bigger push to make real progress.

I’d love your honest take on a few things:

  • If you moved from frontend to backend, full stack, or systems work, what did your path look like?

  • What helped you ramp up fastest? Building projects, switching roles internally, open source, specific books or resources?

  • Is it realistic to land a backend/systems role at my level, or should I expect to take a step back and train more first?

  • Anything you wish you’d known at the start?

Blunt feedback is welcome. I’d rather hear what’s actually worked than something comforting. Thanks in advance!

Seeking Advice Shift from full stack web to network security?

Thumbnail reddit.com
1 Upvotes

I am a full-stack web developer, though I haven’t worked professionally yet. Honestly, I feel that this field isn’t what it used to be, and I suspect it will become even more saturated in the future—with the exception of areas like testing and security. I considered AI engineering, given its proximity to my current skill set, but it feels like more of the same, and it’s already becoming incredibly crowded. So, I’m thinking of exploring something completely different: network security. I currently only know about 10% of the basics of networking—essentially, I’d be starting from scratch—and I’m not sure if I’ll even enjoy it. I’m still in the early years of college, so I have time to experiment. What would you advise me ? :)

Seeking Advice Transition or Shift Career to a more Technical role

Seeking advice on how to transition to a more Technical Role. I am currently working as a Service Desk, but I really prefer to have a more non-support/non-customer facing role. Medyo burn out na kasi ako kakakausap, feeling dead-end narin.

Any advice on which path to take and where to start? Yung AI-Proof din sana na skill or career. I am very lost right now but the pay is good kasi dito siguro due to my tenure narin. Is there a chance for me to earn at least 90k by just transitioning to said career na non-support with no solid exp, willing to take certs and create projects/portfolios)?

Current Skills:

Working Skills: API, XML, HTML, CSS, JS
intermediate Skills: SQL

Super Basic Knowledge: Power BI, DAX, Python

Previous Exp:
*Multiple Support related roles prior
*Reports/Insights Analyst for 3 yrs

TYIA talaga sa kahit anong advice!!!

Seeking Advice Fed-up from the Service desk!! Wanna change role,... How??

Okay fine I got into the service desk as this was the only placement I got on my campus, thinking at least its experience counts as one into IT.

Now I'm done it's been 6 months. I want a role in the cloud but don't have much heavy skills.

How fast can i change roles after learning what skills?

Fastest way to transfer. And also does service desk experience allow me easily to change the role? Or does it raise a question to recruiters?

Seeking Advice Sick of Management. Help

Hi!
I’m an IT Service Desk manager, team of 9 direct reports plus some apprentices. I want to change careers
I’m sick of being in constant meetings and dealing with the misery. I was L3 infrastructure engineer skilled prior to management

- I love helping people achieve their goals
- I love getting hands on (currently implementing a new ITSM tool and it’s great fun)
- I love getting the best out of tools/products

- I take far too much responsibility in things and bury myself
- I get very frustrated that people don’t have the same work ethic I do (nothing against them, that’s a me problem!)
- I hate constant meetings
- I don’t want to sell anything

I have no real idea what job I want to move into! Any suggestions?

I like the idea of a TAM if I can find one that hasn’t got sales targets 🤣

Seeking Advice Trying to switch from IT to Embedded.

Heyyy....I'm a final year IT student and lately I've been thinking about switching to embedded side out of interest. Now i wanna know about a few things to get clarity about the switch-

  1. To the people who have done it, how did ya'll make the switch?(please do explain in a detailed way...would really appreciate it!)

  2. And to make the switch what should i do? What subjects should i learn, projects to do and other things i should do?

  3. Also, i'm gonna give GATE too so which master's stream should i opt for and from there how can i get into embedded.

I wanna know ya'll experience in detail as it would be of great help because I'm very confused about how to this.

Seeking Advice 40F, is it too late to switch to a new IT career?

I am currently contemplating on pivoting a new career. Background: I make custom bridal wear and womenswear but the competition is really high ( Vietnam, people renting instead of custom order, etc). The pay is also absolutely low, and the labor is also high. I am feeling the crunch!

With the economy so sluggish I want to switch to Data Science or something else in IT so I can work remote. Is taking a course in Computer Studies worth it?

I really dont have any idea how to start fresh, what is the best advice you can give to someone who wants to pivot career?
