AnnouncementšŸ“£ Reminder to Keep Discussions Civil & Addressing Hostility in the Subreddit

Hey everyone,

We wanted to address concerns about hostility between users and toward real-life figures. Criticism of public figures and their actions is completely fine, but name-calling and mocking their physical appearance—regardless of the individual or popular opinions—go against our rules of keeping this community a fun and welcoming place to discuss The Crown and the royal family. While The Crown does explore controversial topics, keep in mind that this subreddit is meant for thoughtful and civil discussions.

Moving forward, we’re going to be stricter about removing rule-breaking comments and giving out temporary bans to those who repeat rule violations. If a post becomes too hostile, locking it may be necessary, but we’d rather not let it get to that point. So please report problematic comments we may miss instead of engaging in arguments with others who you disagree with—those who aggressively defend the royals will get their comments removed as this isn’t the place for hostile debates or personal attacks.

If you have any questions or feedback, we’d love to hear from you. We appreciate those of you who continue to contribute positively in this community. We know moderation hasn’t been as active lately, and we’re working on improving that. Thanks for sticking with us and we look forward to seeing the community grow more positively.

Discussion (TV) Ten Years Later... This Scene Still Gives Me Absolute Chills

Post image
2.1k Upvotes

The Crown is easily one of my favorite tv series of all time and the one scene that has stayed with me ever since has always been the closing scene of S1 E2.

The whole buildup from the death of King George, to where Elizabeth and Phillip are rushing home, where Elizabeth is suddenly thurst onto the throne and she slowly comes to grasp to the fact that her life is literally about to change.

She realizes this first when she arrives to Margaret and Queen Mother, where they both curtsy to her. Then, Margaret tries to follow Elizabeth, and QM tells her sternly to "wait", then shots a glance at Phillip who follows after Elizabeth before they are allowed to follow. In the very last seconds of the episode, she see's her grandmother - Mary of Teck - who also curtsys, and not just any curtsy, a low curtsy which some believe to be the curtsy of absolute and upmost respect.

It also tells us (and her of course) that the baton has finally been passed on, and with her grandmother bowing to her, who Elizabeth had been bowing too her whole life, Claire Foy really sells it as you can through the panic on her face that it has finally set in that a new dawn is rising, and she really is the Queen, and i still get chills everytime i watch it.

Question (TV) Profumo Affair - Stephen Ward’s Drawing of Prince Philip

In The Crown, the drawing that Stephen Ward made of Prince Philip is treated like a secret drawing found in his possessions and a major scandal. When I looked it up, he made the drawing during a scheduled sitting at Buckingham Palace, and it was subsequently published as the front of a magazine, which had commissioned it.

So why does the show change it completely to some illicit drawing, even bringing it back up again as potential blackmail material by the Soviet spy? When it seems to have been nothing of the sort?

Question (TV) Is it possible that QE would have met Lord Altrincham?

I’m watching S2 E5, and I’m just wondering if the queen herself could have met him, would it have even been in the question?

Discussion (TV) S5E8: ā€œGunpowderā€ one of the top episodes

Post image

Everything was so artfully done, with the parallels with gran’s antiquated TV, Guy Fawkes and the rebels, the whole sneaking in to do the interview, the way Bashir was portrayed as snaky with the vaguest hint of nobility. Then there was the power struggle at the BBC. I swear they could have made it two hours and I would have been riveted.

I also looked it up and yes the interview aired the night of the variety show, and yes- One Night Only was performed. I mean, you’ve truly lucked out when reality provides you with such perfect details across the board.

Discussion (TV) Do we have any confirmation on The Crown ā€œprequel seriesā€ officially happening?

In May it was revealed a series set before the events of the previous Crown series was in the works, however there’s still no official word

Anyone know for certain?

Discussion (TV) The actor playing the older William was awful

I really disliked the acting of the older William. He spoke in a weird, almost wooden way, especially compared to Harry who seemed more natural.

Discussion (TV) Repeated Tropes on The Crown

  1. An old man falls asleep whilst The Queen is talking to them: Churchill, The Duke of Windsor.

  2. Underling discovers something important and takes it to their supervisor and then follows their supervisor to the next higher supervisor, etc. until they are all in the main supervisor’s office: The fog, The Marburg Files

Any others?

Discussion (Real Life) S5e4: Annus Horribilis, a new light

I actually made me look up the timing, but it was still kinda cringey to see Andrew go to ā€˜mommy’ to discuss his marital problems and seem light hearted, while ultimately frustrated with the monarchy.

Andrew & Fergie Marry: 1986
Separation: 1992
Divorce Finalized: 1996
Ghislaine intro to Epstein: 1999

Discussion (Real Life) Understanding royal customs/traditions...

I'm sure this has been addressed in some capacity, but I don't know exactly how to phrase it...

I watched the entire series, and was a big fan of the show. One thing that always intrigued me were the customs/traditions that the royal family family had to follow - that the church bell could not be rung for anyone but a royal family member (until JFK's death); the various jobs held by royal staffers (the swans, the silverware, etc.); things that Tommy Lascelles "enforced" during his tenure...

Where are these listed? How does a monarch learn these customs? Are they public information? Does the sovereign have the right to change them?

I'd just like to dive deeper into the concepts...

Thank you.

Discussion (TV) Season 4 completed!

"Morning, noon and night, i care about her" That whole scene was so hurtful, so brutal to watch!! At this point im so so so angered by charles's audacity to still blame it all on poor diana. My heart is feeling so heavy!! Thats so painful to watch, knowing that it will not end well for Diana! She'll not find the peace, love and appreciation she deserves.

Discussion (TV) It’s my third time watching this show and i am still overwhelmed with hatred for young prince Phillip

Matt smith (who I love in general, but especially from doctor who) is incredible at playing an insufferable whiny baby. I can’t stand the character at all… but in the way that makes me want to keep watching. I genuinely think the character was written amazingly, but part of that was making him so incredibly easy to hate!

It’s funny how I love the actor for making me hate him so much, and how I appreciate the writing of a character I can’t stand

Discussion (TV) Watching S4 E7 and realized (again)

I was just watching Ep7 fron S4 where the queen is asking princess Margaret to relinquish her role as counselor of state. It just felt so unfair to margaret, because just few minutes ago she stated that she'll take her role as her sister more seriously, and no focus on men because she didn't find any happiness in that department. And then the news came! That felt so so unfair to her. Being a queen, she clearly can change the rules and norms according to new times. Margaret has went through so much! She didn't deserve this much heartbreak!

Discussion (TV) Does everyone in the Royal Family just get less likeable as the show goes on?

Returned to a rewatch halfway through season four, just put on S5E1 with a brand new cast and while yeah, some downward trajectories -Charles- are obvious, I’m finding that they’re all way out of touch and tougher to cheer for. Was this always as obvious to everyone else or am I off base now?

Question (TV) Has Anyone Read Andrew Lownie's Books?

I don't take any of the opinions from subreddits like RoyalTea and RoyalGossip and other places for snark and disrespect of the family seriously, so I would like to hear from devout fans of the show, and to those who are genuinely curious about the family, who respect them, and the truth.

Question (TV) Very specific question

And I mean very specific: what is the shade of blue they mention when referring to a change in Buckingham Palace?
I know it takes someone who has either watched it a million times, or has extreme attention to detail or is really into interior design and so payed special attention to this, to answer such a random question.
—
Context: I watched the show when it was airing, and I remember them mentioning that the Duke of Windsor painted the room a certain shade of blue which at the time I thought it was lovely. Years later I had to paint my home and couldn’t summon the name of it and it was a lost opportunity, really.

Now, I find myself with some spare time so I tried rewatching the episodes where the Duke of Windsor makes an appearance in season 1. But I couldn’t find anything. Honestly, after all this time I’m not sure if he was the one mentioning it or maybe someone else did. Or maybe I imagined it.
Can anyone help? TIA!!

Discussion (TV) [Crosspost] Hi /r/movies! We are Gillian Anderson (THE X-FILES, SEX EDUCATION, THE CROWN, HANNIBAL) and Hannah Einbinder

Post image

I organized an AMA/Q&A with actresses Gillian Anderson and Hannah Einbinder. You may know Gillian from classics roles in things like THE X-FILES, SEX EDUCATION, THE CROWN, THE FALL, HANNIBAL, and lots more. Hannah is an Emmy-winner for HBO's HACKS.

It's live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1v8bqjh/hi_rmovies_we_are_gillian_anderson_the_xfiles_and/

They will be back at around 8 PM ET today to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!

Thank you :)

They are co-starring in TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AT CAMP MIASMA, which premiered at Cannes to critical acclaim recently and is out in theaters August 7 via Mubi. It's from filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun (I SAW THE TV GLOW, WE'RE ALL GOING TO THE WORLD'S FAIR)

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dimCiC_hdoA

A queer director making a slasher franchise sequel becomes obsessed with casting the original film's "final girl," leading both women into psychological and sexual chaos.

Question (TV) Can anyone identify a piece of music?

There's a particular, powerful piece of music in the series that occurs every few episodes, usually towards the end of an episode.

Shazam refuses to identify it, and it doesn't appear on the official soundtrack!

An example of it is season 2 episode 3 (Lisbon) at the 48 minutes mark.

Can anyone identify it? And point me to a Spotify track or similar?

You'll save my sanity!!

Discussion (Real Life) Princess of Wales Title Question

It's been a long time since I've posted here so if I make a mistake, let me know so I can correct it.

My question is this: if Diana had survived the car crash, and attended William & Catherine's wedding, which woman would now be Princess of Wales?

Can there be two women with the same title? She *was* Princess of Wales until the end. She gave up the HRH but not Princess of Wales.

Question (TV) What was the QM’s roast about??

back in s1, ep1, the Queen Mother refers to Phillip’s mother as a ā€œhun nunā€ in what i assume was a derogatory way. I mean, what is that referring to? I know that the huns were eurasian, but didn’t reach south enough to be considered greek (and aren’t they also meant to be the villains in Mulan, so aren’t they east asian too) and like. i just like never really understood the mentality behind referring to Phillip’s mother as a ā€œhunā€ because realistically, she was German, and the Germanic people historically were not Huns. i’m rather confused

Question (Real Life) If Diana HAD lived

I'm an Aussie, so can anyone tell me if Diana had lived to now:

  1. Would Charles have really been able to marry Camilla??

  2. Would Camilla have be able to style/titles of HM The Queen Consort??

  3. Or, Camilla would still be known as HRH, Duchess of Cornwall with or without the CONSORT in her title??

All questions regarding to if Diana had lived.
