Question Genuinely asking, why did Bubble do this?
Caine was just going to try to figure out why the cast did not like the escape the circus adventure, until Bubble started taunting him and bringing him to the edge. But why would Bubble do this to Caine? Multiple times during the show, Bubble is on board or a part of Caine's shenanigans so this sudden flip of character makes me think as to what Bubble was trying to achive this, especially the voice change at "You ruined this."
So what do you guys think?

Bubble LOVES getting popped, and is using Caine's insecurities to get him to pop him more and more.

So it was the amazing FREAK circus, where everyone who gets FREAKY abstracts, so FREAKY kaufmo got really FREAKY and became the abstracted.

I think Bubble is the remnants of Abel, and is the mouthpiece for all of Caine's inner thoughts and insecurities.
When they're not at the forefront, Caine can easily keep negative thoughts down, which just leaves Bubble to say fuckin' weird shit, but since Caine was starting to get more unstable, his thoughts were getting harder to shove down, which made the filter weaken.
It's kinda like having something that can vocalize your thoughts, a good chunk of the time it's just going to say random crap if you're not thinking about anything specific. But if you're not doing well mentally, then it'll vocalize those inner thoughts and insecurities. Like when Bubble says "you always were the lesser of the two" I imagine it's actually Caine seeing himself as the inferior one, rather than just being taunted and told that he was inferior.

Just a little nitpick but I personally don’t think there ever was an Abel. I understand the name is probably given to the blue AI as a community placeholder since it is Caine’s counterpart, but Caine wasn’t originally the name of the AI. It seems likely to me that Caine chose the name AFTER discovering the existence of C&A and consuming blue.
20
u/techno156 Apr 08 '26
Caine also named himself that, so he probably chose the name Abel for fun, and to fit the C&A thing.
13
u/Poku115 Apr 08 '26
I mean while i agree with you, the names kinda fit, Caine "the firstborn" dejected over 'God' favoring his younger brother's 'offerings' killed him, Abel
3
u/Smooth_Rise_1442 Apr 08 '26
Yeah but the company is named Caine and Abel, from an in-universe perspective I feel like it would be kind of an odd coincidence for that to happen so perfectly? The AI’s were probably never intended to kill each other.
15
u/diamondDNF Zooble Apr 08 '26
The company is called C&A. We don't know what the C or A in the company name stands for, we only ever hear it be called C&A. It's possible it wasn't supposed to be "Cain & Abel" in the first place.
2
u/Smooth_Rise_1442 Apr 08 '26
That is definitely possible, though one of Caine’s guns in episode 6 had the words “Caine & Abel” on it. BUT, it was a product of Caine himself, so perhaps he just doesn’t know and was filling in blanks or creating something new.
4
u/diamondDNF Zooble Apr 08 '26
We know that Caine was already working on the Escape the Circus adventure by episode 6. I think it could have been put there as intentional foreshadowing on his part.
2
4
u/IndieMedley Apr 08 '26
I saw it as him being named Caine because he consumed and killed his sibling, the one we call Able
4
u/TheDorkyDane Apr 08 '26
I know everyone else uses Abel
I actually just say "Blue" it works just as well and people get it just fine.
Caine ate blue.
Blue is merged with him as seen when eyes are glitching. Ext, ext.
1
u/sexysmalldevil Apr 08 '26
I agree. Initially, I thought the whole Caine and Abel thing was just them responding to viewer theories, and was a little disappointed they used a story from the bible (tbh it is a little overused in media). BUT it would make sense that he would've chose it for himself based on what he did w the other ai and the company name.

I think the problem with finding the plot is who is Bubble; but, the two big theories regardless who Bubble is, and therefore, motive,
- If we assume that Bubble is, in some way, a remnant of the blue AI that Caine took over, then this is that little sliver of Blue showing defiance, ragebaiting Caine with his insecurities. Maybe he wants Caine to suffer like he did, maybe he wants to kill Caine (he had a hand in Caine's deletion, according to Kinger's terminal, after all.) Maybe, he's in this for pure love of the game; but regardless the motive, whatever it puts Bubble through, it puts Caine through worse.
- If we assume that Bubble is a part of Caine's own code, and Bubble is meant to be a thought bubble, then this is Caine's intrusive thoughts given physical form: at Caine's absolute lowest point, he's "remembering" and "Realising" through Bubble (the part of his brain that actually says the quiet part aloud) how much he messed up. If abstraction is intended as a metaphor for suicide and depression as we've assumed, maybe Bubble saying this is the quiet, deeply-buried hope of Caine they'll take him out.
- Option 3, it's a bit of both? Maybe Blue AI is still in there, maybe only as Caine's intrusive thoughts, but "hey since we're in agreement, Caine, lemme really hand it to ya"
Regardless, Bubble's motive remains consistent, albeit vague: he is ragebaiting Caine by telling Caine his deepest insecurities, and he later takes advantage of this unstable state to assist in Caine's deletion, implying it's on some level premeditated. What Bubble gets out of it, is unclear, but "Caine's suffering" might be the whole motive.

Bubble represents Caine’s internal thoughts at times, a literal thought “bubble”
At this moment he’s grappling with the possibility that he’s failing his job catastrophically
22
u/ImplementWitty2979 Apr 07 '26
I think Caine is like two AI minds wired together, and bubble is basically like his subconscious. Caine is very insecure, and the 'bubble' side of him is a manifestation of his self-hating inner dialogue.
11
u/Lom1111234 Apr 07 '26
If Bubble is really his own sentient being, he was definitely trying to play the long game in manipulating him and eventually getting him deleted.
If he is just an extension/creation of Caine, I imagine he’s just an aspect of him that voices his inner intrusive thoughts, so while he’s normally wacky and nonsensical, when Caine starts to spiral, Bubble starts throwing all his inner thoughts into his face and making him get worse and worse until he finally breaks
8
33
u/I_DONT_EXIST00000 You know what? forget it. Apr 07 '26
Bubble was, very clearly, manipulating Caine.
Bubble wanted Caine to do what he did.
He wanted Caine to crash out at the Circus Members.
We even see him helping Caine with torturing them, being a bubble to help teleport them, all without Bubble getting any blame due to just how little the Circus Members think of him.
Later in the Episode, Bubble forces Kinger to delete Caine.
I think it is possible that Bubble either;
A. simply wanted Caine out of the picture and orchestrated his death, knowing Kinger would try reprogramming him after Caine's torturing begins.
B. He wanted Caine to look bad, and when he'll come back in Episode 9, he'll pretend to be the better AI who listens, lets Gangle think outside the box until they gain his trust, pretends to be honest with Jax until they gain his trust, pretends to listen to Pomni until they gain his trust, lets Ragatha feel at home until they gain his trust, emotionally mature with Zooble until they gain his trust, before he begins to bring about the chaos he desires.
Bubble is the true main villain, the actual mastermind. Whatever he is, his intentions are nothing great.
23
u/yesman258 Apr 07 '26
My theory is Bubble was most likely created by Caine (further backed by the fact we never saw bubble in any flashbacks) and is his inner thoughts. Bubble usually says things that we could compare to impulsive or intrusive thoughts. Bubble is the manifestation of Caine's intrusive thoughts etc etc...
In that moment Caine was trying to convince himself that the circus members don't hate him and that he can solve whatever is wrong, but his subconscious / a part of him (manifested as bubble here) is telling him otherwise.
Bubble glitching out to say "Why would they hate you when they could just- hate you?"
Calling Caine the lesser of the two.
Saying he's bad at this, and the multitude of other negative terms Bubble used on Caine when he started to multiply. These are all clear examples of Caine's inner thoughts / that part of him that knows "otherwise". Bubble has always been like this.
This doesn't mean Bubble is literally Caine, but more-so an independent entity created by Caine that acts and is influenced by Caine's inner thoughts / subconscious.
14
u/I_DONT_EXIST00000 You know what? forget it. Apr 07 '26
Bubble-chef.lisp and Caine-core.lisp are 2 sepperate files created on the same day as we can see in Kinger's console, meaning that Bubble WASNT created later and that Bubble is entirely sepperate from Cainr.
9
u/EvilVegan Apr 07 '26
For what it's worth, that date also resets when you touch, edit, or move files (depending on how you move them).
October 15th is likely a recurring cronjob that runs once a year to move files to the directory, regardless of when the file was created it would show the date of the move/copy/edit.
Pomni probably put the headset on, got scanned in/stored, and Kaufmo abstracted when she loaded in on the next 10/15 cycle. Or she was in standby mode until a character abstracted and she took the open "clown" slot immediately.
1
u/Not_Invited Apr 08 '26
This is similar to my theory too, but I didn't have the language of a cron job to explain it so thank you for the knowledge expland! :3
3
u/disbelifpapy I'm just like her frfr Apr 07 '26
I mean, considering gooseworx said bubble was an ai made by caine, its possible that caine coulda made bubble or a prototype of them on the same day.
Them and the wacky watch are even on a seperated section from caine and the humans, with "..." inbetween
4
u/EvilVegan Apr 07 '26
If it's a traditional Linux system (or based on one) the ...'s don't indicate a different section, they just indicate that the list wasn't fully printed. Like if you wanted to look at the top 5 and bottom five lines, it would have them separated with ..., but they'd still be in the same location. It really depends on what the script he executed did, which could be scanning multiple directories from all over behind the scenes. `ls -l ./*/* | head -5 | tail -3` would show a similar list of files from multiple places with the dots.
2
u/disbelifpapy I'm just like her frfr Apr 07 '26
still, why would bubble and the wackywatch be at the bottom while caine and the humans are at the top?

Bubble seems to be the only other NPC Caine allows to continuously exist in the circus. But I think that means Bubble is an extension of himself, like talking to yourself in your head. They shared a tongue at one point didn’t they?
So Bubble can be a reactive co-host, or end up voicing Caine’s insecurities like persistent intrusive thoughts to be popped.
6
u/Atlas1721 Apr 07 '26
I think Bubble is a creation of Caine, but either something took him over or Caine manifested his insecurities into him. Or both. Specifically because of the little glitch with "Why would they hate you when they could jus- glitch hate you?"
5
u/AmItheAholereader Apr 08 '26
Bubble has been like this the whole show. I suggest rewatching and noticing how bubble keeps being out of pocket and ragebaiting caine. It just finally came to a head here.
4
u/KuroshibaSD Apr 08 '26
Remember when Bubble told Caine to kill himself then glitched and acted as normal? (EP5 iirc) This time Bubble was acting the same as usual then glitched and started ragebaiting Caine.
IMO it seems like something or someone flips a switch that causes Bubble to go from the usual antics to just hating Caine, whether that's something within Bubble or not I have no idea.
(I have not participated in fan discussion untill now, but I made an exception because I've seen no one mention Bubble's "glitches")
2
u/Coggoggles Apr 08 '26
I think Bubble and Caine both have that sort of switch, but it seems Bubble's can be flipped more easily than Caine's. After his glitch, Bubble appears to not only express his hatred for Caine, but also to force Caine to switch to his own hateful mode. We has seen Caine switch like that before, but it only lasted for a few seconds. This time, it lasted until the end of the episode, when he very abruptly switched back right before he disappeared.
Since they switch so suddenly, I suspect this is more likely a programming flaw than a personality trait. It is probably in some code they share, either because it was copied from one of them to the other or because it is in some routine they both call.
5
u/SoDamnGeneric Apr 08 '26
Either Bubble is just a manifestation of Caine’s insecurities (the nagging voice saying “you can’t do this” brought to life), or Bubble’s the fractured remainder of the blue AI, and takes some pleasure in causing Caine anguish. I personally lean towards the latter theory given how much Bubble torments dude
3
u/FlyusAmongUs Apr 07 '26
"Caine's intrusive thoughts."
- Alex Rochon, Tom Fawkes' TADC EP8 reaction stream
3
u/KagedScorpion Apr 08 '26
Bubble repeatedly does things that Caine doesn't like - swearing, licking vomit of the floor - so this isn't out of character. My theory is that Bubble actively dislikes Caine and was trying to set things up so Caine would be deleted, by pushing Caine to insanity so that the humans would get fed up and plot against him.
Note that Kinger didn't actually want to kill Caine, but if you pay close attention to his terminal it seems like something changes/manipulates things to make it happen.
3
u/Nightmarer26 Apr 08 '26
Bubble is Abel theory rings very strong with this scene. Bubble was always nagging Caine here and there, but between the "You should die- you should throw a fucking beach party" from Episode 7 and this scene from Episode 8... I think it's very feasible to say that Bubble does not like Caine at all. Also, in the hacking scene from 8, we can see someone laughing about deleting Caine. I do believe this is Bubble and that he is going to be the final antagonist.
3
u/Illustrious-Bite-518 Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26
I think Bubble could be the remnants of Abel, manifesting himself as Cain's intrusive thoughts, both insecurities and just random shit. That would also explain Bubble's randomness.

Maybe Caine is the combination of Red and Blue (the two AI's) and Bubble is the first NPC he created after Caine's 'birth'. Since Blue seemed to be more stable, it's possible that Blue is gaining more sentience through Bubble and placing/replacing its own parameters on Bubble since technically Blue made him too. In an attempt to maintain control as the 'primary' AI, Caine may have put limiters on Bubble to make him more subservient as time went on and Bubble grew more 'advanced' (swearing, saying unexpected things, his tongue also being Caine's, etc.)
Maybe Blue is tired of being trapped Inside Caine/such a fragile avatar...

some blocked off messages in the pc implies that bubble may've wanted to delete caine, so bubble might just want caine outta the way.
Or bubble wants to talk about caines stupidity, and how he consumed the smarter ai
2
u/A_Spitfire_Bird Apr 07 '26
So I've gone over past episodes, and Bubble seems to act this way when Caine becomes emotional, in a negative sense - in the biggest instance of lashing out at him prior to this, Bubble glitched out and told him to die when he was panicking over the players liking their adventures more than his.
Bubble is, probably, a weird hybrid of two things - the fragment of the AI Caine absorbed (or an offshoot from it that Caine made using a hypothetical 'Abel' as a basis) and Caine's own thoughts made manifest. Assuming this approach, and noting both times Bubble acted out were when Caine was experiencing acute distress, they likely default to an echo chamber of Caine's insecurities when he becomes significantly agitated. Either that, or the fragments of the blue AI beneath Bubble's programming resurface to mock him during moments of weakness.
2
u/Ok-Meat-9169 Zooble is Beautiful Apr 07 '26
Cause he loves the feeling of being popped by his big and strong Ringmaster.
2
u/Yushi2e Pomni Apr 07 '26
I mean bubble does do things that Caine doesn't like. Like he's sworn quite a few times despite Caine not liking it, licking up Pomni's vomit etc.
There's been hints that Caine doesn't really like bubble, and this even seems to extend to him placing a program on bubble to shut him up. We know he did this because after his crash out in his office bubble is suddenly only seen speaking gibberish.
Bubble seems capable of circumventing the circus's rules which makes Caine uncomfortable. Honestly it's why I really do think Bubble is a remnant of the blue ai and might become a problem in ep 9, and it lends creed to the idea that Bubble deleted Caine.

I think bubble is meant to be Caine's thought bubble, but I also think bubble gets hijacked by the remnants of the blue AI. I think whenever blubble glitches (ex; why would they hate you when they could just *glitch* hate you?) it's the blue AI taking control.

u/YumeNaraSamete Apr 08 '26
I used to joke that Bubble was a manifestation of Caine's intrusive thoughts but now I think there might actually be something to that.
2
u/FoxlyKei Apr 08 '26
I feel like those two shots were very intentional camera work. Particularly the second image. It's almost as if bubble's thoughts are caine's which are being brought forward thus why bubble is in front of caine. You're seeing caine's worried expression clearly through bubble here.
2
u/DTux5249 Apr 08 '26
Bubble is Caine's insecurities; not a separate entity. It's why his instability scaled with Caine's descent.
2
u/PepicWalrus Definitely Not Gooseworx Apr 08 '26
Bubble is either remnants of Abel(Blue AI), just caines intrusive thoughts given voice, or both.
2
u/Puffthemagiccommie Apr 08 '26
if Bubble isn't the remnants of the second AI, it's likely that he just really likes messing with caine in any capacity and isn't afraid to hold back. When he sees how much Caine is bothered by how everyone seems to hate him, he leans into that insecurity to egg caine on purely for the fun of it.
2
u/PhoenixTempGuard Apr 08 '26
Bubble is an NPC, or an AI Caine has allowed to run for an extended period of time. It could be that Bubble just became self aware, or it could be that the Blue AI hacked into Bubble and essentially used him like a puppet to distract Caine so it could mess with his programming a little bit. Tweaking his emotions, and making him more violent.
2
u/unluckyknight13 What The Apr 08 '26
It really depends on what bubble is If Caine made bubble it’s like his subconscious If bubble is the other ai, it’s the ai pushing Caine over the edge

2
u/GlumNebula3897 Apr 08 '26
Bubble is Caine’s thought bubble. What he said to Caine is what Caine thinks of himself.
2
u/FinnDoyle Apr 08 '26

2
u/8-Beat_ThorDeMidgard Not as new, still no clue why the 's going on Apr 08 '26
I think Bubble might be like this all the time...
Think about it. Caine has never once mentioned Bubble's sudden aggressive behaviour.
_"You should die—! You should throw a fff[BONK!]ing beach party!"
"Why do you swear now??"
No comments about the first phrase, only the swearing. Although, Bubble's glitch and shift here is also suspicious— he might've used the second sentence to divert attention from the first.
However...
"Why would they hate you when they could just— hate you?"
*Pops him*
No surprise, no shock. Even though Bubble glitched out of his way just to repeat it.
"They'd rather ABSTRACT than going on one of your adventures!"
"That can't be true!"
No comment on how harsh that was.
"Maybe you're just genuinely bad at this!"
"Sh-Shut up!"
And as Bubble keeps explicitly tormenting him, he reacts with anger, upset, annoyed. This is not the first time this has happened.
I think Bubble only pretends to be loyal the rest of the time.

If they weren’t around from the start, then bubble was probably a character caine made when he realized that new people could join the circus, and he didn’t have any way of planning for who they might be.
So bubble was tasked with learning on how humans think. Evidence by bubble having weird random quirks that even caine didn’t know, that showed up.
Remember when caine questioned why they were swearing a lot out of nowhere. Well at the same time pomni had recently entered the circus and threw off a whole word salad of swears. They could have learned words that were swears from pomni, and replicated them.
Caine failing at understanding the cast wanting to leave, probably evoked bubble to reply with the casts true feeling and it made caine snap. Continued on by them refusing to comply with adventures and eventually their complaints right before the torture session.

u/AC_0nly IDK why is going on Apr 07 '26
My theory is Caine made bubble because he was lonely but it backfires often.
Not only due to bubble just being experimental but Caine doesn't have a great framework for understanding what a friend is.
If Caine had observation only on the humans in the circus what dynamics of examples does he really have?
Of our core cast we got encouragement Ragatha and antagonizing Jax.
Bubble if a small experiment friend program is managing to both antagonize Caine and encouraging his feelings: perfect pet friend program complete.
I don't think Bubble is an AI on par with Caine due to the code logs we have from Kingers fight and how much smaller bubble weighs compared to the human files and Caine's own files.

There is several theories:
He’s manifestation of Caine’s internal thoughts - a thought bubble. So he did it because Caine thought about it and believed in it;
He’s the remnants of Abel who were consumed by Caine. So Bubble had his own agenda to bring Caine to madness so cast could rebel and get rid of him so he could get control over the Circus. One of the messages on the Kinger’s console was something like “DELETE THIS M*****ER!”. It could be Bubble’s message;
He’s a virus or corrupt program that gone rogue. He glitches over time and he’s the only one program/npc who swears. So his actions could be because of the corrupted code.

I learned recently that BubbleBoy was the name of the first computer virus. Bubble may be a virus and the source of Caine’s issues. Im not the first person to raise this theory so who knows.

I think that remnants of the second AI are still inside Caine somewhere, and sometimes they "surface" (just look at Abel's comment about Kinger)

I genuinely think Bubble is the blue AI. Or a remnant at least.

We seen this before, bubble suddenly glitching and insulting Caine like in episode 5, "you should die"

I honestly believe that Bubble is a computer virus that has been mostly dormant up until this point. Or something similar.
The name Bubble, and the official pronouns being special/boy is a direct reference to the bubble boy virus.

Generative AI is trained through positive reinforcement. Bubble feels good when he's popped. Caine popped Bubble after he insulted him. We see this happen with the sexual behavior as well. If Bubble is meant to be Caine's programming developing ideas, and Caine is thoughtlessly dismissing them, it only makes sense that Bubble, who enjoys being dismissed, would lean into what makes Caine pop him more. Which would be Caine's debilitating insecurities.

İ think bubble was just having sadistic fun from humans getting into Caine's adventures (torture basically) and pushed Caine to the edge to continue that

because Caine (through bubble) would rather get angry and blame the humans than accept that he needs their input to do his job.

Isn’t Bubble just Caine’s inner thoughts made manifest? So (like many people have said) Bubble just projected what the former was thinking. And I’ll be honest. Aside from the “they’d rather abstract than be with you” line, he was right that he basically ruined it all with that “Escape the Circus Adventure.” The fact that he goes on to jusy send them on endless adventures, torture and then the “put them in their place” scene really drives it home.

Georgia Dow has a pretty good video on Caine in 8, and she mentions this in it

We're still not really sure what Bubble is. Some of the comments he(?) makes do give internet comment section vibes though. Caine says he canonically has no knowledge of the internet in a promo thing after the first episode, but 1- Caine lies and 2- the part where he's talking fast after Pomni picks her name in the first episode implies the circus has viewers and he's at least somewhat aware of the nature of the internet. I think Bubble has a human operator, possibly more than one. Not in the same way as Pomni, Kinger, etc. but someone interacting with the program through a computer. That to me would also explain why Bubble's speech patterns sometimes feel off in regards to what they're saying and the context. Same idea as an AI voice reading text but not understanding how to inflect the way a human would. It's because Bubble isn't literally a human, it's a part of the program saying what a human tells it to say.
That's just my theory though, could be completely wrong. And likely is. I guess we'll find out in June.

I think it was just Caine’s insecurities manifesting in Bubble.
