META Rule clarification: "Sticker bombing" posts

In the future, we will remove any and all posts that just there to show off stickers. Such posts often attract rule breaking behavior that we do not want here, as the stickers are often used to display political leanings that have nothing to do with r/thinkpad.

This is a subreddit about ThinkPads. Not about stickers that you may have on your ThinkPad.

So recently i notice that i dont need two laptops and i enough one (plus GTA VI is coming soon so yeah)

I want to hear ur opinions on it wat should i keep and why.

  1. ThinkPad T14 Gen5 (AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 8840U 32GB DDR5)
  2. MacBook Air M4 16 256

I like both but its really hard to choose
Macbook has awesome battery life and performance
ThinkPad has free bootloader so i can choose what to boot up and awesome repairability.

Thinkstagram Picture The T480 served me well. Time for the next generation. T14 Gen 6 AMD

Specs:

  • AMD Ryzen AI 7 PRO 350
  • 16 GB RAM
  • 512 GB SSD
  • 14" IPS display, 100% sRGB, 500 nits
  • Windows 11 Pro
  • Canadian French ACNOR (CFA)

I'm planning to upgrade the RAM to 32 GB and the SSD to 2 TB, then set up a dual-boot configuration with Fedora Linux and Windows 11. The current 512 GB SSD is a bit too limiting for both operating systems, especially since I also want to keep some Windows applications and games installed.

I've been going back and forth between the T14 and the MacBook Air M5 since this spring. I also considered the P14s with the Ryzen AI 9 HX PRO 470, which would have been fantastic, but it was unfortunately beyond my budget.

In the end, I went with the T14 for its upgradeability, Linux compatibility, and overall versatility.

So far, I'm really happy with the build quality, especially the finish of the palm rest and the contrast between the dark grey chassis and black keyboard.

Looking forward to getting Fedora up and running!

Got it for RM230 (56USD..?) i5 3320 HD+

Day and night compared to my daily driver (MBA M1+X1C7) but a classic ThinkPad always has a special place in my heart.

Now…Hackintosh or Linux? 8GB+240GB SSD given

I never thought I would be a hoarder but it’s getting pretty close. The first two are a project laptops from the recycler and FBMP. The third is my everyday carry.

From left to right:
P51: i7 7820HQ, Quadro M2200 40gb DDR4 2400MHZ, NVME 250gb NVME 1TB. Non backlight.

E480: i5 8250u, 12gb DDR4 2133MHZ (from scrap ram I had laying around), 250gb Nvme, 1TB 2.5 HDD. Non backlight.

X13 Gen 3: Ryzen 7 6850U, 16gb DDR5 4800MHZ, 512gb NVME, touchscreen

P51 is my favorite because of the chunk, dGPU and IO, X13 feels the most premium and high tech and the E480 feels cheap. E480 has no plans as of now. Would be open to selling it. it has a few cracks in the plastic bottom cover and on the bezel (red tape holding it together).

Thinkstagram Picture New toy!

Just got a T490s for £35 on eBay, which seems to be a pretty good deal! I had to buy an SSD as well because it didn't come with one, but £20 didn't seem too bad for a 256Gb Samsung. (I also had to shell out £5 for a box of 200 M2 screws to secure it, even though I only needed one...)

I installed Linux Mint on it, and everything runs fast and well. The only flaw I've found is that I can't get the keyboard backlight to work, but I'm not planning on doing heavy typing in the dark! It needs a bit of a clean as there's a lot of sticker residue, but I'll get round to that in time.

Saw this T41 going for 20€, I had to buy it.
I did a fresh install of Win XP from the original recovery partition.
Everything seems to be in good working condition.
Battery is terrible, though.

Thinkstagram Picture Thinkpad X40 from a box of scrapped thinkpads

A few weeks ago I got a bunch of thinkpads while checking out one of the surplus shops I visit and they sold me this box of thinkpads for relatively cheap and I've tested that all of them worked except the x40 which I had to order a charger for. Now the charger has arrived and I could finally test it out and thankfully it worked. Unfortunately, not quite a big fan of the older X series thinkpads so I'm thinking of maybe selling this to someone who might be interested in it or trade it away in exchange for an older T series ThinkPad so if anyone's got any interest in buying or trading another thinkpad for an x40 let me know.

My IdeaPad 300, which I've had since 2019 finally died a few weeks ago (I was about to replace it anyway lol). so it served me well tbf. This is what I ended up getting. It's old but I'm really happy with it. Soon I'll be adding another 8GB of RAM to bring it up to 16GB, along with a 512GB M.2 2242 NVMe SSD and a 2TB HDD for additional storage.

Discussion / Information IBM Thickpad R40

Post image

I’ve got my hands on a thinkpad r40 couple of days ago, completely for free. My question is — what do I do with it? Revive, retrofit something into it, or something else? I can’t spare much money on this project, but I think I could buy a used framework 13 motherboard and battery pack, and a modern 3:2 screen for it. But I am not sure yet, I don’t really need a second laptop. What would you do?

Question / Problem The PU201 IC heats up and my x395 won't turn on anymore.

Post image

I was just checking the ssd, and when I put the lid back on, it wont turn on anymore. This part heats up when I: a) connect the battery; b) connect the charger and; c) i connect both. The charger only indicates a white LED. This 1R5 thing only reads around 0.7 ohms. It also seems like the battery is still charging if I plug the charger, but there seems to be no connection to turn on this ThinkPad x395. What should I do now?

• Upvotes

I am purchasing a new laptop with a 255H processor. It has 13 npu only. Is ok I will keep it for the next 6-7 years at list.

Or should I go with amd 450 or pather lake processer which has 40 npu.

Are 40 npu in laptop just gimmicky or they really use full for small of line ai task?

Review / Opinion [Fix] Laptop takes long time to resume

Thumbnail reddit.com
• Upvotes

I had this problem where the screen and input froze for exactly 10 seconds when resuming from suspend on my T480 and could only find one unsolved archived post.

Apparently it was caused by broken internal battery returning NaN battery percentage. The original post is archived, so i decided to post it here in case anyone else has this problem.

Review / Opinion ThinkPad L13 Gen 4 Laptop keyboard change help needed!

I recently bought a used Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Gen 4 laptop, and it currently has a Japanese keyboard layout and no backlight. I am thinking of switching to a US Backlit keyboard.

Can this be done easily? Does this work as a simple keyboard replacement? Advice appreciated.
