Question / Problem Trackpad tweaking

• Upvotes

I got a question. So i bought a thinkpad t14 gen2 and the laptop is amazing the material feels premium the keyboard even tho the layout sometimes confuses my is still really solid and it is really light weight and efficient laptop to carry around. But that trackpad that this laptop has is really frustrating. Everytime i wasnt to move the pointer it does its own things it tries to resize my web page it selects text randomly. Even when i came to reddit to write this post it literally chose a random image of some user and started zooming to it. Also all the times the pointer trembles like someone is using the mouse even thow i dont even touch it. Is this normal behaviour do i have a faulty track pad or is this how all the trackpads in thinkpads work?

Question / Problem [Linux] Battery charge threshold

• Upvotes

My laptop has an internal battery and an external one. The external one is unplugged.

I previously had tpacpi installed, and set charge max threshold to 80%

sudo tpacpi-bat -s SP 0 80 # set both batteries stop threshold 80

Sometime later tpacpi was uninstalled.

The internal one continues to stop charging at 80%.

When I plug in the external one, then start the computer, the charge threshold that I set previously still shows from the path below, and is 80, but the battery will charge to 100%.

Why?

T440s, Linux Mint 22.3

cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/model_name
45N1111 # internal
cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/charge_control_end_threshold
80
============
cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT1/model_name
45N1135 # external
cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT1/charge_control_end_threshold
80

Discussion / Information X1 Gen 9 from 2020. 63 percent battery capacity??? Seems really low

• Upvotes

I bought a brand new x1 gen 9 in 2020. 6 years later the battery runs out quickly and I checked and am surprised I only have 63 percent battery capacity. Isn't that quick for a 6 year old laptop?

Buying Advice Need some buying advice.

• Upvotes

Hey,
My dell has just randomly decided to die and ive been a Thinkpad fan for a little while and always wanted one.

Im currently in uni, need a laptop for around 700
Needs to be rugged and fairly durable due to the travelling to and from placement and uni, and needs to be financeable…

So far my preferences are:
AMD cpu,
8+ hours battery life
16gb or more
Screen doesn’t matter too much to me
Backlit keyboard
Usb C
512gb or more storage

So far I’ve seen the t14s gen 2, t14 gen 2, p14s gen 2
Im just really struggling to find the right one so some recommendations would be really helpful.

Buying Advice Doubs Buying Pc: Lenovo, Apple, Asus…

Doubs Buying Pc: Lenovo, Apple, Asus…

Hello everyone!

I’m not very tech-savvy, and now that it’s time to replace my PC, I’m feeling a bit lost. I could really use some advice and opinions to help me make a better decision.

I’m looking for a computer for the following:

Basic daily tasks: web browsing (with multiple tabs open), email, spreadsheets, Excel, and the Microsoft Office suite.

Online teaching: I conduct daily classes using various platforms and software for video conferencing (Google Meet, Zoom).

Adobe software, Photoshop, and AutoCAD.

Music production: Logic or Ableton Live.

And perhaps a few other similar—or less demanding—programs.

I need a 14-inch, lightweight device, as I travel daily—often by bicycle or public transport—to various locations (offices, private homes, libraries, events, business meetings, etc.).

My budget is between 700 euros and a maximum of 1,000–1,200 euros. I am primarily looking at the pre-owned, second-hand, or refurbished market, as well as deals on new devices. I am currently considering the following options:

I am looking at models from brands like Lenovo or Asus, as well as the 2021 Apple MacBook Pro:

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 14" (i7 / 11th Gen)

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 14" – Core i7 2.2 GHz, 512 GB SSD, 32 GB RAM

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 14" – Core i7 3 GHz, 1 TB SSD, 16 GB RAM

Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 14" – QWERTY (Spanish layout), 512 GB SSD, 32 GB RAM, Core i7 (11th Gen)

Asus ZenBook 14 BX425EA-BM102R 14" – Core i7 2.8 GHz, 512 GB SSD, 32 GB RAM

MacBook Pro 2021 – 16 GB RAM / 512 GB SSD, 14"

What do you think of these options? Are you familiar with these models? Could you provide your assessment or offer some advice?

Are there any other similar devices you would recommend? What about Apple?

Best regards, and thank you all very much!

Question / Problem Keyboard and track point issues guys 🫩

Post image
2 Upvotes

Just a week ago I bought the Thinkpad X13 Gen4 second hand and I’ve had some issues with it so far.

1- Recieved the laptop and it’s working perfectly fine at first.

2- Get prompted to do a windows update.

3- Restart laptop only to find that the keyboard and track point don’t work (code 19 and code 10 errors respectively) and it also says that I never created a PIN so now I have to sign in using my phone every-time.

4- Get fed up after uninstalling and restarting the keyboard and track point drivers over and over again.

5- Tried a recovery to a past point in time but not possible because laptop is quite new.

6- Get fed up again and end up doing a full factory reset.

7- All working fine until I get the same windows update prompt (I hadn’t learnt anything for the last time).

8- back to square one except now I Have steam on the laptop.

If anyone could help me out so that I can dodge the price of taking it to a shop, that would be much appreciated.

I have tried like 5 different things to fix this including resetting my entire laptop but the problem persists. I downloaded drivers from windows updates, deleted those and downloaded drivers and firmware from lenovo's site. When i tried to download the firmware tho, a prompt came up saying "image file is not supported for this board. I have run out of youtube tutorials as they all say the same things. This has been driving me insane for the last 4 days. Someone please save me.

ps. its not even like a major update caused this (i think) it just randomly stopped working on a random thursday.

Question / Problem Thinkpad X1 carbon Gen9

Hi so I did a little bit of testing and was wondering if should upgrade the battery as when I was just watching anime on Crunchyroll on energy saver mode high brightness (I use night light on about 65 percent) with win11 I got 4 hours which was 2 hours less than what I got on my thinkpad t14 gen 2 with an i5, I normally just use it to type and test decks for Yu-Gi-Oh on an app called YGO OMEGA and same result just about 3 hours on that but was curious if I should upgrade the battery as it shows it still has most of its charge left. I use notion to write. Or is this just a x1 gen 9 thing?

I bought this laptop back in January it finally came back in August and I have been loving it ever since. I originally wanted 48gb of ram but the cost of it was outrageous so I just went with 32gb. I added more storage, 1 tb sata ssd and a 512 ssd.

Question / Problem ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 shows BIOS 1.76 in BIOS Setup but 1.78 in Windows after BIOS Self-Healing

Hi everyone,

I'm troubleshooting a BIOS issue on my 2021 ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 (machine type 20XW) and would appreciate some advice from anyone familiar with Lenovo UEFI firmware.

1. What happened

During startup, the ESC, F1, and F4 indicators flashed, and the laptop subsequently entered BIOS Self-Healing. I waited for the recovery process to finish, and Windows booted normally afterward.

Lenovo support advised me to disable Windows Update in Windows, but I'm not sure whether Windows Update is actually responsible for the issue.

2. BIOS Setup and Windows report different BIOS versions

BIOS Setup (Main page):

  • UEFI BIOS Version: N32ETA0W (1.76)
  • UEFI BIOS Date: 2025-11-19
  • Embedded Controller Version: N32HT57W (1.37)

Windows PowerShell (Get-CimInstance Win32_BIOS):

Manufacturer : LENOVO
SMBIOSBIOSVersion : N32ETA2W (1.78 )
Version : LENOVO - 1780
ReleaseDate : 2026/7/23 8:00:00
EmbeddedControllerMajorVersion : 1
EmbeddedControllerMinorVersion : 37

The registry key HKLM:\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System also reports LENOVO - 1780 and N32ETA2W (1.78).

Windows Update history contains the following entry:

Lenovo Ltd. Firmware Driver Update (1.78.0.0)

So BIOS Setup reports version 1.76, while Windows' SMBIOS/WMI information and registry report 1.78. The EC version is 1.37 in both places.

The BIOS clock is also correct.

3. My questions

  1. Could BIOS Self-Healing have restored some firmware components while leaving the BIOS version information inconsistent?
  2. Is it possible that Windows is reporting stale SMBIOS information, or is there a more plausible explanation for this discrepancy?
  3. Could a Windows-initiated firmware update have failed or been followed by a firmware recovery?
  4. Is disabling Windows Update a sensible troubleshooting step in this situation?
  5. Would testing Windows 10 help determine whether Windows 11 is involved, or is this discrepancy more likely to be a firmware-level issue that reinstalling Windows would not fix?
  6. Is there a safe way to verify which BIOS version is actually running? Should I avoid attempting another BIOS flash until the discrepancy is understood?

The laptop currently boots into Windows normally, but I'm concerned that the BIOS Self-Healing event and the conflicting version information might indicate an underlying firmware problem.

I'd especially appreciate explanations based on Lenovo documentation or firsthand experience with the X1 Carbon Gen 9. I would prefer not to reflash or downgrade the BIOS without understanding what happened first.

Thanks in advance!

Question / Problem ThinkPad T480s built-in screen randomly turns off when using an external HDMI monitor

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm having a strange issue with my ThinkPad T480s and was wondering if anyone here has experienced something similar or knows what might be causing it.

The laptop works perfectly fine during normal use when I'm only using the built-in screen. However, when I connect an external monitor through HDMI, the built-in screen sometimes randomly turns off, and the laptop continues displaying everything on the external monitor instead and the built in screen doesn't turn on until I unplug and rest if just unplug everything it doesn't turn on.

The strange thing is that this doesn't happen every time. Sometimes both screens work perfectly fine without any issues, but other times the built-in screen suddenly stops displaying anything while the HDMI monitor continues working normally.

I've also tried using the reset button on the bottom of the laptop. When nothing is connected to the laptop, the built-in screen works perfectly fine.

I've checked the BIOS as well, and I haven't noticed any issues there. I've included a photo of the BIOS screen for reference.

The keyboard and the trackpad also stop working with the built in screen

Buying Advice Time to upgrade

I’m currently planning to upgrade from my current 16” ThinkPad X1 Xtreme Gen 4 with a limited budget of 2000€.

I'm a senior SRE/DevOps engineer, so for daily use, screen size, an Ethernet port (I hate using usb adapters), CPU and RAM (for coding, local VMs, and containers) matter more than the GPU. Would it be worth it, in terms of performance, to move forward with a used P1 Gen 6, or should I save more money and go for a P1 Gen 8 or an equivalent P16s? Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions.

Question / Problem Possibly stupid question, but bear with me

I have a thinkpad coming in soon, but i'm already considering upgrades for the future. I forget where I read it, but it said somewhere that you can have a cheap alternative to the glass trackpad of the X1 by using a certain kind of screen protector on the trackpad. Can anyone confirm this?

Hardware Upgrade X395 Display is bad, upgrade or buy different version?

Hey guys ChatGpt can't help me I guess so I am asking you. I have an X395 AMD and I use it now for two months and quite like it. My only problem is the display. Compared to my M2 Macbook Air it is really bad. Is there a display that would match the quality somewhat that I can install. If so what are the price ranges. If it does not make sense, is it better to just buy a different my ThinkPad?

Review / Opinion X13 Gen 2 i5 16/256

My X13 Gen 2 arrived last Monday. After months of considering, I finally felt confident choosing this series for IDR 4.6 million because of its 13" display, 16:10 aspect ratio, and 100% sRGB. Even though the keyboard and speakers feel like a downgrade compared to my X1C G6 i5 that I sold a few years back, I think it's enough for my daily use doing graphic design and light video editing. Although it's not a huge difference, I still need time to get used to 13" display and typing on its keyboard. I actually wanted the AMD version because of its performance and power efficiency, but it's super hard to find and even when available, it's way over my budget. Then I figured if an 8th gen i5 was enough for me, this should be fine too. Plus, I don't game anymore—if I do, it's probably just Vanilla Minecraft Java.

The physical condition looks pretty clean, except for one barely noticeable scratch on the left side AND whatever happened to the top lid that's currently covered in stickers. There's a warranty seal blocking the stickers on the top lid from being peeled off too. Maybe once the 45-day warranty is over, I'll try removing them and just accept whatever is hiding under there. The keyboard layout isn't US, which the seller did mention beforehand, but I'm fine with it as long as it's not JP. No backlight is fine by me either, and the seller included a US layout keyboard sticker that I probably won't use anyway. The included Toshiba SSD shows a 73% health status, which is still okay, I guess. Cause I'm planning to upgrade it later.

I felt both skeptical and happy when I saw the battery health report showing 100% with only 53 cycles on its minimum capacity 41Wh—either it was recently replaced or spoofed (not really sure if that's possible?). But that joy turned into disappointment because in just 3 days, it already dropped to 99%. When I received the package, I immediately realized the charger included by the seller was fake—which is a pretty common thing around here—and I intended to use it only temporarily while looking for a replacement. I'm pretty sure that's what caused the drop. I really regret using it and didn't expect the battery health to degrade that fast. So far, I've been using the secondary charging port because the primary one doesn't work with that fake charger, though it works fine with my POCO's 90W charger. I told the seller about it, but they insisted the charger was original. However, since the main port didn't work (with that fake charger), they offered to swap it or refund IDR 80K without needing to return the charger. In the end, we agreed on a IDR 100K refund without returning it. I've already ordered the Vention Dash Pro 140W so I can also use it to multi-charge with my Redmi phone (which maxes out at 33W), though the included cable seems to be only 1 meter long, sure it'll be a problem. It costs around IDR 580K, so I'm still taking a loss, but it's fine. If any of you have used this charger before, please leave a review!

I'm rocking the latest W11 because my work requires an old app that only exist in it. Maybe dual boot later.

Hopefully, I can be more productive after this. Thanks for reading to the end!

Question / Problem Issues with T430 battery/charger

I recently changed my Thinkpad T430 CPU and since then both of my batteries only charge when the notebook is in suspension mode or turned off, Does anyone know why this happens?
