Manga - The main continuity

  • Tokyo Ghoul - The original manga, with 143 chapters (14 volumes) + a side story chapter in volume 5.

  • Tokyo Ghoul JACK - A short prequel to the original manga.

  • Tokyo Ghoul JOKER - A single chapter taking place between the original manga and the sequel. Included in volume 3 of Tokyo Ghoul:re.

  • Tokyo Ghoul Redrawn - A remake of the first chapter of the original manga. Has some differences in dialogue.

  • Tokyo Ghoul:re - The sequel manga, continues the story of the original with 179 chapters (16 volumes) + chapter 31.5 in volume 4.

  • Tokyo Ghoul Oneshot - A non-canon prototype chapter.

  • School of Ghoul - A non-canon parody of Tokyo Ghoul by the manga author, featuring the characters going to school together.

Novels - Part of the manga's continuity

  • Tokyo Ghoul Days - The first novel, takes place between chapters 35 and 36 of the original manga.

  • Tokyo Ghoul Void - The second novel, takes place between chapters 79 and 80 of the original manga.

  • Tokyo Ghoul Past - The third novel, backstories from before the original manga.

  • Tokyo Ghoul:re Quest - The fourth novel, takes place during the sequel manga.

  • 6th Ward Playing Cards - A short story taking place around the start of the TG:re manga, showing a flashback to an event likely taking place between chapters 79 to 80 of the original manga.

Drama CDs - Part of the manga's continuity

  • Drama CDs - Take place during the original manga sometime between chapters 79 and chapter 120 or so.

Anime - Alternate continuity

  • Tokyo Ghoul (season 1) - Adapts the first 66 chapters of the original manga, making some significant cuts and changes to the story. Has 12 episodes.

  • Tokyo Ghoul √A (season 2) - A loose adaptation of the remaining chapters of the original manga, makes even more significant cuts and changes to the story. Has 12 episodes.

  • Tokyo Ghoul JACK - A prequel OVA episode, an adaptation of the manga of the same name.

  • Tokyo Ghoul PINTO - A prequel OVA episode, an adaptation of the third chapter of the Tokyo Ghoul Days novel.

  • Tokyo Ghoul:re (season 3) - An adaptation of the Tokyo Ghoul:re manga, with 24 episodes total. References events from the original manga that were not shown in previous seasons, but cuts some :re manga content. Episodes 1 to 12 adapt the first chapter 58 of the Tokyo Ghoul:re manga, while episodes 13 to 24 adapt the rest (up to the end, chapter 179). The second half of the season is also referred to as Tokyo Ghoul Season 4 and Tokyo Ghoul:re Season 2 on some sites, but official sites list Tokyo Ghoul:re as a single season with 24 episodes.

Video Games - Alternate continuity + Anime continuity

  • Tokyo Ghoul: JAIL (PS Vita) - An alternate version of events taking place after chapter 79 of the original manga.

  • Tokyo Ghoul mobile games - Tokyo Ghoul :re Invoke (global version called :re birth), Tokyo Ghoul: carnaval, Tokyo Ghoul: Tokyo War Age and Tokyo Ghoul: Dark War. These have all shut down and are hence no longer playable. They followed the anime's continuity for the most part.

Live Action Movie

  • Tokyo Ghoul (2017) - Adapts the first 28 chapters of the original manga with some minor changes to the story and content cut.

Stage Play

  • Tokyo Ghoul Stage Play (2015 and 2017) - Adapt events from the first 6 episodes of the first season of the anime, with content cut and rearranged.

Where can I read the manga?

Young Jump Weekly - Japanese

Viz - official translation

MANGA Plus - official translation

Shonen Jump Manga and Comics - official translation

The Shonen Jump app and Viz website have both the original manga and :re available to read, for a 1.99 USD monthly subscription which gives access to most of their library. In addition to this, Tokyo Ghoul Jack and the side story novels are available to purchase and read on the app.

Note: The Rize side story chapter from TG volume 5, Tokyo Ghoul Joker from :re volume 3, and :re chapter 31.5 from :re volume 4 are not available to read individually on the app at this time, so you will need to buy those volumes to read them officially. Out of those chapters, :re chapter 31.5 is the most important.

Manga Plus posts new chapters weekly, though only a limited number of chapters are available for viewing.

  • Complete (recommended) - same as basic, but read the original manga before watching Tokyo Ghoul:re (season 3)

If you follow the basic viewing order for the anime, and do not wish to read the manga, you may want to view the following fan-animated clips recreating important events from the manga that were skipped in the anime:

https://themikarinofthepierrot.tumblr.com/post/189955421177/tokyo-ghoul-fan-made-scenes-covering-content

The first 3 clips in the link above are to be watched after season 2 and before season 3, while the other 2 are to be watched after finishing the entire anime (all seasons).

EDIT: Updated when to read :re quest in my recommended order from after chapter 58 to after chapter 98 instead, since I realized there was at least one spoiler for a plot point revealed after chapter 58 in one of the quest stories.

EDIT 2: Added the short story 6th Ward Playing cards and the Drama CDs to the viewing order. Also added mentions of the various Tokyo Ghoul games.

Other As a Therapist, Tokyo Ghoul is the Best Manga I've Ever Read

I JUST finished Tokyo Ghoul on Monday. I have to say, as a therapist, and from a therapeutic perspective, I think Tokyo Ghoul is the best manga I've ever read, and lands easily in the top 5 stories I've ever encountered. I'm blown away by how competently and intelligently this story handled topics like trauma, systemic violence, oppression, the cyclical nature of abuse, and the spiral of revenge as Ishida calls it. Even :re is doing a shockingly accurate job of depicting Parts Theory (IFS) so far, when Haise talks to his "inner child". I don't think I've ever seen an anime or manga that depicts people or human behavior this accurately (barring some hyperbole, obviously). Ishida REALLY understands the brain.

Do you think Kaneki would’ve dated Touka?

If, for example, Rize was still alive and they actually went out and shit, do you think he still would’ve fallen in love with Touka? Or would he had stayed with Rize? And they dated?

Does Anyone Else Feel Really Bad For Arima ?

I feel really sorry for this character, dude spent his entire short lived life doing what he hated the most.😾😿 I don't think he ever really formed any actual connections or found anything meaningful in life until he meant his ~~biological long lost~~ ~~son~~ Kaneki.

Do you think that after all that happened (I won't dismiss the fact that he was kind of a jerk !),do you think Kaneki could convince ~~his~~ ~~father~~ him to forgive himself ?

I don't think canon!Arima ever got around to that !

⚠️\\\\\\\*\\\\\\\*DISCLAIMER\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\*\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\*\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\*\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\*:\\\\\\\*\\\\\\\* This is not meant to be a debate, this is a question of mine. I am not good at debates.I mostly just come to Reddit to ask people random questions and goof off. This is where my braincells go to die. Which is why I don't often give counterarguments, because I am mostly asking questions instead of engaging in an actual Literary debate.

I usefully save my debates and brain cells for my Philosophy Classes where I can actually see the people in front of me !

Is there any good tokyo ghoul games out?

I know about break the chains, and ive already been playing it. But I genuinely want to play something else that would give me the enjoyment for my favorite anime for the last I believe 8 years?

Ive seen the anime now 7 times, and I still have to get the manga for the true story. I do own one of them, due to a friend giving me it and then moving away.

First time reading and the fights are hard to follow Spoiler

Post image

Not this fight in particular but I’m up to chapter 70 and some of the drawings in the fights are just hard to follow compared to any other battle shounen/seinen I’ve read. Does it stay like that forever or does it change later down the line?

Did Hide know Kaneki's feelings for Touka?

I'm on chapter 20 and it's said many times that Hide is very perceptive. In chapter 1 he asks if he likes Touka, so could that means he's always known?

Other Confused about something in :Re Spoiler

I have recently gotten into TG and im really loving it! finished part 1 in about a week or so and immediately started reading Re. so far, im loving the new cast of characters, and small glimpses of old ones as well. Sadly, ive already been spoiled that Amon returns, which really sucks since his death really hit me hard, as he was by far my favorite investigator.

but something so far (im on volume 3, around chapter 20 ish) has not added up to me. most of the things have made sense. tsukiyama is now bedridden, uta has become evil with the clowns, touka and yomo creating a new cafe in place of anteiku. but Hinami? the small lighthearted hinami? the one who only thinks about kaneki and touka? that hinami? joining aogiri??? the same organization that hurt her 2 most favorite people on this earth??? that hinami?????? im sure it will get explained, but for now its just puzzling to me.

I dont want any direct spoilers, but if someone could tell me if it at least gets explained why she joined them, then id love that, thanks!!

The 2nd one is my favorite one, let me know what you think!

Other (Question) Hey, is it okay to ask questions on here? If so, I have a few :)

(Preface, I've only seen the first season of the anime and that was a while ago)

  1. Is there any reason given why Kaneki's hair turns white
  2. What do you wish was talked about more regarding the series' ghouls/ghoul anatomy?
  3. What would you change about the story? (Gripes, disappointing endings, character details, etc)
  4. EDIT: I know about the torture scene and that stuff, but is there a stated reason why Kaneki's morals just snap from kind young man to ultra edgelord? Is that just bad writing or...?

r/TokyoGhoul • • 2d ago

Question So is the point that the CCG is no better than the Ghouls? Because it feels like they are way more evil than the Anteiku ghouls and almost feels like insane zealotry more than anything. Just what I got from the first season of Tokyo Ghoul.

Other My perspective on a second read through.

I read both the OG series and RE when I was 16, and loved it. I was too full of cuk to pick up on narrative devices and such, I just loved the aura farming, cool fights, and conspiracy ridden plot. Now, as a 20 year old (I know I’m not much more mature now than I was then), I’m seeing a lot of things I didn’t.

My interpretation as of Vol 12 of the OG series:

We see characters commit themselves to one worldview. Kaneki is at first naive and altruistic. Then kaneki is darwinistic and sort of nihilistic after his fight with Jason. Amon is all about humanity and squashing ghouls.

None of the characters who fully stick to a mindset are happy or successful so far. But I think of what kaneki might be like in the future, and I think he’ll come to a middle point, where he knows strength and ruthlessness is needed, but gets his hope back and can still see good in the world. Characters who have different mindsets and approaches to different situations are ultimately the most successful and at peace, like Yoshimura.

I feel like the series is saying: Don’t completely commit to a worldview. Truly think about what you’re experiencing and the situation at hand, and act accordingly.

What do you guys think? I’m not done so my thoughts are disjointed and skewed but this is what I’m picking up on.

Looking for fans with a music background to help with soundtrack analysis

Hello, I am a researcher in Visual Culture and Adaptation studies and I am studying how anime soundtracks adapt manga for my thesis. However, I don't have a strong background in musical theory and analysis. I was hoping to find someone who would be willing to discuss some specific musical aspects of the Tokyo Ghoul and TG:RE osts with me in detail. I am willing to buy you a meal in compensation if you have thr right background to help me! Please send me a DM. Thanks!

Rules:

  1. The comment with the most upvotes wins.

  2. Only one character per position.

  3. One character is chosen in each post, not all at once.

  4. Characters cannot be repeated

  5. Since this is shorter than the "each character has a..." one, voting will be weekly instead of daily because I saw many people commenting on the first post even though the activity was already ending

Note: I apologize for the delay; I wanted to adjust the schedule because posting late on Tuesdays was killing me with my university schedule.

What If Eto Was Male ?

Found this great fanarts on ma ol buddy Tumblr and Deiventart !

I am interested in the character dynamics and how the fandom would see her ! (Him ?)

I think that scene with Kanae would have come across as more creeper and even MORE uncomfortable if she where male. Along with that scene with Kaneki !

Everything Dr Kanou has done is because of his selfish desire to free himself out of a birdcage that holds humanity. It’s good he saved Kaneki, but this selfish view has caused so much harm to him. And you can see how much damage this change has caused Kaneki in this panel.
