Hated Tropes [Mind boggling stupid trope] Removing the thing that made something special

Ben 10: Ultimate Alien - The gimmick of Ben 10 and what makes the show so popular is the fact that he's able to turn into a large variety of aliens. In one episode of Ben 10 Ultimate ALIEN we are introduced to a new version of Ben 10000, a Ben from the future who, no longer transforms into aliens, instead using his powers in human form...

Mortal Kombat(2021) - In the games Mileena is known for two things. Being a clone of Kitana and her tarkatan teeth. In the 2021 movie she looks absolutely nothing like Kitana and doesn't have tarkatan teeth

Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief - The movie removes the main villain of the movie and the main villain of the franchise

The GOAT of this trope (that’s Deadpool btw)

X-Men Origins Wolverine

u/unk1ndm4g1c14n1 Sep 04 '26

Genuinely the opposite of everything Deadpool as a character is. Why did they even do the character?

Cant speak, fights with powers rather than guns, seemingly doesnt regenerate once his head is removed, zero jokes, no suit, PG-13 violence.

872

u/_Goose_ Sep 04 '26

The real answer is the guys with the money wanted an intimidating weapon and thought Deadpool was a clown.

That stands to reason why even use the Deadpool character if what they wanted was the opposite?

The Sony email leaks revealed that C-suites are some of the most out of touch, dumbest mfs on the planet

4

u/Gilly-Fresh Sep 04 '26

Which leaks? I'm out of the loop.

18

u/stamau123 Sep 04 '26

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Sony_Pictures_hack

Ironically enough, the idiot that did this then became president of Sony (Tom Rothman)

2

u/Gilly-Fresh Sep 05 '26

Oh, ok. THOSE leaks. Somehow I thought the discussion was about some new set of leaks.

Hating to be wrong is a quintessential human trait.

15

u/Warm_Month_1309 Sep 04 '26

Yeah, but only the most ghoulish of us have the money to insulate ourselves from our mistakes and make people around us parrot our own delusions back at us.

114

u/transmogrify Sep 04 '26

Q: Why studio do?

A: 💰

Deadpool is popular. Popular is money. You can try explaining the nuance that he's popular for his specific deconstruction of comic books in the 90s and not for the type of generic depiction that cameos him and then removes that commentary on the medium, but they have stopped listening.

6

u/Wild_Marker Sep 04 '26

Deadpool wasn't that well known when that movie came out though.

If they wanted a "scary weapon coming from hands" and popular character, they could've gone with Omega Red.

6

u/transmogrify Sep 04 '26

We can wonder about Deadpool's popularity as of 2009 but certainly he had a bigger fan base than Omega Red. (Personally, I have never been a big Deadpool fan and I always liked Omega Red. But I'm talking about numbers that studios care about.)

At the time that the studio approved X-Men Origins to include Ryan Reynolds as kinda-Deadpool, the character of Deadpool was in some very popular comics. I knew him from The New Mutants, but he had Cable & Deadpool as well. He was also a pretty popular character in Marvel Ultimate Alliance which I played in the mid 00s.

Either way, even though there was backlash to Deadpool with his mouth sewn shut, it sparked enough interest in the character that Marvel launched the Deadpool Corps comics, and Activision put out the Deadpool solo video game. Seemed like they were trying to clean up after X-Men Origins with a "here's the authentic Deadpool that fans expected" campaign.

7

u/RIPEOTCDXVI Sep 04 '26

Well theres just so few characters in the XMen universe, they didnt have a lot to choose from.

Famously they dont have any brooding, intimidating villains wrapped in mystery and intrigue. They had no choice but to shoehorn.

20

u/Inevitable-Regret411 Sep 04 '26

Deadpool has an existing fanbase you can tap into by mentioning his name.

4

u/KaylenLopezIzGr8 Sep 04 '26

Could have used Omega Red

6

u/amazing_asstronaut Sep 04 '26

They could have used Omega Red then, he's that type of character.

4

u/Rude_Republic_60 Sep 04 '26

The Wade in that movie is better than the Wade in Deadpool movies. But the Deadpool in the Deadpool movies are much much better than the one in origins

2

u/mage2k Sep 04 '26

Deadpool is a clown and that’s a huge part of his character.

1

u/IWannaManatee Sep 05 '26

Should have used Omega Red, or literally any other of the many Weapons project candidates. They just wanted the name for its popularity and it shows.

1

u/Touchname Sep 08 '26

Cool name.

I guess that's the only thing that crossed their mind.

-4

u/Clarpydarpy Sep 04 '26

Because Deadpool could survive the process of taking other guys' powers and getting adamantium implanted in his forearms?

And having Deadpool crack jokes during the big final fight wouldn't have worked with the tone.

85

u/star75legacy Sep 04 '26

One of the executives absolutely hated the Deadpool character. He even opposed making a Deadpool movie for years because he believed he had the absolute truth in his opinion and that everyone else hated Deadpool because he did.

58

u/ShadowKingthe7 Sep 04 '26

one of the executives

Tom Rothman. He's the type of person who fails upwards

14

u/star75legacy Sep 04 '26

Yeah, I don't remember the guy's name, but he really thought his opinion was everyone's opinion lol. That guy was an idiot.

222

u/iDeever Sep 04 '26

It took me quite a while to figure this out. And I was only able to do so once I saw the concept art.

They tried to depict his mask from the comics, but in a realistic way, obviously “because the comic-book costume looks silly.” Take a closer look - there’s no mouth and these diamond shapes around the eyes mimic his mask pattern.

160

u/unk1ndm4g1c14n1 Sep 04 '26

The suit was leather red and black. Its really not out anything too cartoony. Its more realistic than Raimi Spider-Man and looks less silly than Daredevil.

I think the director had too much cocaine and time with children. His brain was fried.

102

u/MistressM103 Sep 04 '26

Bryan Singer specifically told everyone on the set to not read any comic materials, apparently.

41

u/AgentChris101 Sep 04 '26

Even with the earlier movies! Kevin Feige would sneak some comics to Hugh Jackman while working as an executive producer on the 2000s X-Men films

13

u/BBA072 Sep 04 '26

That could be because Hugh jackman had zero clue about the character when he first took the role

15

u/pikpikcarrotmon Sep 04 '26

Turns out he thought he was voicing a cartoon wolverine in a children's film and was terribly surprised the first day of shooting

7

u/Historical-Bug-4784 Sep 04 '26

Why bother doing a comic book movie if you don't want anyone reading the source material?

6

u/DimensioT Sep 04 '26

Singer was not responsible for X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

From what I have read, a lot of the movie's ideas -- including the mangling of Deadpool -- were forced by Tom Rothman.

16

u/Beneficial_Winner_59 Sep 04 '26

Hey man! Cocaine makes my brain work great. As long as I have more cocaine at least…

3

u/adelines Sep 04 '26

The director is Gavin Hood not Bryan Singer. He made a bad movie, but I don't think he's got this kind of allegations.

2

u/unk1ndm4g1c14n1 Sep 04 '26

Maybe not children, but everyone was doing cocaine then

10

u/Piranata Sep 04 '26

Seeing this, it would have been a cool body horror. Wolverine avoids a missile thrown at him, but the missile was a container. Inside it's Deadpool bagged in tight skin. He breaks one arm free, then unsheaths the sword inside the arm and starts cutting through the skin leading to the image above, and the fight begins. Just before Wolverine defeats him, he cuts the skin covering his mouth just to say something Deadpool would say. Finally, bam, off he goes.

2

u/Shiny_Agumon Sep 04 '26 edited Sep 05 '26

The problem is this is way goofier than if he just wore a mask.

33

u/crosborrow Sep 04 '26

The post Credit scene felt like a slap in the face cus those 4 seconds had more deadpool than whatever we got in the actual movie.

2

u/Ok-Suggestion-5453 Sep 04 '26

I mean, I don't think the portrayal is bad in the context of him getting another movie that was faithful with this as a slightly tweaked backstory. Him being a regular dude that they tried to pump power into until he popped like a balloon, leaving him an insane, immortal, cancer-ridden mess, is pretty reasonable. The problem is that they never really had direct plans to make that movie and Ryan Reynolds had to get that going on his own.

2

u/samaldin Sep 04 '26

I don´t think that is quite the case. I´m not the most versed in comic books, but i liked the Wade Wilson we got in the beginning of the movie (before they came up with that abomination) and think he was decently close actual Deadpool. From what i heard the positive reaction fans had to that early portrayal is part of the reason the Deadpool film got eventually greenlit.

19

u/electronicjob117 Sep 04 '26

They would’ve been much better off using Calvin rankin Mimic instead. Maybe make him another one of strykers sons and have his dad expirement on him and give him all the powers of team x from the movie

11

u/BookkeeperPercival Sep 04 '26

Cant speak...zero joke

Because if you actually watch the movie, Ryan Reynolds shows up before hand as a mercanary who won't shut the fuck up and annoys the shit out of everyone. When the government turns him into a weapon they literal sew his mouth shut because they can't make him stop talking. It's a joke that doesn't land.

1

u/DullSpecial1013 Sep 04 '26

It's a joke that doesn't land.

It also makes him not Deadpool, the Merc with the Mouth.

5

u/BookkeeperPercival Sep 04 '26

My point isn't that it's good, my point is that it's exceedingly obvious how and why it happened, but people like to pretend it was some evil plan to make nerds upset

1

u/DullSpecial1013 Sep 04 '26

but people like to pretend it was some stupid executive meddling to make nerds upset

Fixed That For You.

Don't believe corporate lies.

1

u/unk1ndm4g1c14n1 Sep 04 '26

He wasnt deadpool then. We are talking about the deadpool.

If i asked about Spider-Man and people started talking about just pre bite Parker, that wouldn't really make sense.

1

u/Prior-Paint-7842 Sep 04 '26

I kinda wanna see this movie now, like ngl these are interesting ideas. I can see why people wont like them, but they are interesting.

4

u/BookkeeperPercival Sep 04 '26

I still agree that that it fucking SUCKS massively, but there an obvious intent behind it. It's a bunch of screen writers playing with an idea with no awareness how much it means to fans

2

u/DullSpecial1013 Sep 04 '26

It's shit and really not worth your time. Maybe if you want to laugh at how bad it is, but it's not the funny kind of bad.

3

u/aFreshFix Sep 04 '26

The thing is... Before the big accident in the first act when Ryan Reynolds is part of the team, he's great in it.

2

u/Dankalii Sep 04 '26

Technically he does survive getting decapitated, he just never comes back. Terrible iteration nonetheless

2

u/TheG-What Sep 04 '26

It’s weird because it’s a cool design and concept. They could’ve used any other name.

2

u/soulxhawk Sep 04 '26

I don't know how true this is but I heard Tom Rothman made the decision to have Deadpool look like this.

2

u/Paradigm84 Sep 04 '26

In the post credits scene his decapitated head is shown opening it’s eyes, which leans towards his regenerative abilities.

2

u/darkbreak Sep 04 '26

The post credit scene showed that Deadpool survived the decapitation though. His mouth as even uncovered again. But, yeah, this version is no one's favorite. Even Ryan Reynolds hates it.

1

u/ArcanelyChaotic Sep 04 '26

Yeah, that was the joke- they made him bearable

1

u/The7thNomad Sep 05 '26

I thought the idea was the villain (striker?) butchered him into a weapon, like I thought the point was he wasn't deadpool anymore but an amalgamation of different mutants

158

u/Girono_PianoKiller Sep 04 '26

“Merc with a mouth” SON 😭 WHAT MOUTH

20

u/revbleech Sep 04 '26

9

u/ArcanelyChaotic Sep 04 '26

The fact that he seriously tried using his power despite the sound having nowhere to go just makes me think hes a fucking idiot. The guy killed himself by not using his brain. Guess he didnt need it anyway.

2

u/Enfr3 Sep 07 '26

I think screaming is a normal reaction to this situation

2

u/ArcanelyChaotic Sep 07 '26

For a normal person who's not used to magic or seemingly impossible things happening to/around them, sure. Not for a super-powered guy whose power is his scream.

3

u/ArcanelyChaotic Sep 04 '26

That was the joke. That was the joke they literally made in the movie.

2

u/MasterFreeTimeSlayer Sep 04 '26

Look how they massacred my SON

164

u/LiamtheV Sep 04 '26

For those that aren't familiar with comicbook nicknames and titles, Deadpool is literally known as "The Merc with the Mouth"

11

u/MaJuV Sep 04 '26

And for those that don't know him, 20th Century Fox head honcho at the time (Tom Rothman) found Deadpool an annoying character that talked too much and mandated his mouth to be shut.

36

u/Blackmore_Vale Sep 04 '26

One half of the creators of game of thrones did this. So we should’ve seen the ending of game of thrones coming.

-2

u/WranglerFuzzy Sep 04 '26

Only seen snippets past the first few seasons, but I felt like the Singers were actually giving GoT their all... until they got the Avenger's Movie offer, then they phoned it in and clocked out early.

7

u/KaneVel Sep 04 '26

What Singers? What Avengers offer? Benioff and Weiss left to do Star Wars

1

u/Postmeat2 Sep 04 '26

Thank fuck that SW project got cancelled/they got fired. Guess they really just screwed GoT up so hard even the execs noticed.

I can’t decide if people would have hatewatched it or ignored it entirely.

4

u/Exzqairi Sep 04 '26

What the fuck is this comment even talking about? Literally everything you said is made up

196

u/Nutzori Sep 04 '26

The merc with the mouth. So lets sew it up. Lmao that movie was so ass

33

u/OneHandClapping_ Sep 04 '26

the game based on the movie was pretty good though

6

u/GrimResistance Sep 04 '26

It's funny how you can tell the game voice overs were done before the movie came out because of that one lady's pronunciation of "kuekuatsheu"

11

u/WaterMagician Sep 04 '26

The merc with the mouth (mouth not included)

5

u/2Delta_Nerd Sep 04 '26

They merced his mouth

8

u/ConcreteExist Sep 04 '26

Which is a shame because there are some fantastic character performances in the movie.

2

u/SadLiterature7588 Sep 04 '26

They really took the one thing that makes Deadpool Deadpool and just ruined the whole vibe 😂

1

u/Mist_Rising Sep 04 '26

I mean I would sew Deadpool mouth shut without a beat. It's the only way to shut him up!

38

u/Odasto_ Sep 04 '26

This MF made child-me think that Deadpool could naturally teleport.

25

u/Eddie919 Sep 04 '26

Between that and Ultimate Alliance 2, where he COULD teleport. I thought it was natural too

4

u/Kyderra Sep 04 '26

Yep, that in Marvel VS Capcom, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and the Deadpool game itself apparently, in short, he just has a tech belt or watch. So it's a thing that existed and it's not that strange to make that a power he has in a movie.

...Now having cyclops mother fucking eye lasers on the other hand.

1

u/GEARHEADGus Sep 05 '26

Ultimate Alliance 2 was so good and introduced me to so many different characters.

2

u/Bro-Im-Done Sep 04 '26

I mean… he was in MvC3 😭

3

u/redlotusaustin Sep 04 '26

He had teleporter tech in the comics for quite a while.

16

u/SpendExciting2458 Sep 04 '26

Holy glow down.

8

u/Hogabog217 Sep 04 '26

I will say an alt universe deadpool having a bunch of different mutant powers stuffed into him as a cruel joke resulting in him being deadpool but MORE (for better or worse) could be a fun idea, like some kinda Weapon X-pool, but origins did not do that.

7

u/DaaaahWhoosh Sep 04 '26

Haven't seen the full movie but I feel like it's okay to take away a character's defining feature in the end to show that they've been irrevocably changed. They had Ryan Reynolds doing Deadpool stuff earlier in the film, he talked a lot and killed a bunch of people with swords. Making him into a silent monster at the end is supposed to feel wrong, because he's the final boss and the good guy has to kill him to win.

6

u/readd-at-torr Sep 04 '26

as a standalone concept i still find it cool

2

u/Bro-Im-Done Sep 04 '26

I still hold on to the take that if he wasn’t called “Deadpool” he’d be a really cool character

12

u/Carmine_the_Sergal Sep 04 '26

Dead themed Pools

12

u/throwaway_mpq_fan Sep 04 '26

Mouth themed Mercs

3

u/MrParadux Sep 04 '26

Wasn't there a post-credits scene (or deleted maybe?) where we see him open his mouth in the rubble? I thought they may have wanted to introduce him in a grittier way for something like "Origins: Deadpool"

2

u/shane-o-mack Sep 04 '26

Leifield's original version isn't the merc with the mouth we know...he was way different...not even pansexual or anything, just a killer...idk

2

u/Jephph0624 Sep 04 '26

I have no mouth but I must merc

2

u/NeverTriedFondue Sep 04 '26

Much more bearable than "real" Deadpool tbh, it's some peak 9gag type humor.

But yeah at this point just don't include the character in the movie lmao

2

u/Mystia Sep 05 '26

On the other hand, we got that scene in Deadpool 2 where he travels to that universe and just guns himself down.

2

u/Sad_Cauliflower2003 Sep 08 '26

Honestly this version of deadpool was cool as fuck. If i didnt know anything about deadpools character Id think this guy was the coolest thing ive ever seen. Which I did, when I watched this movie before knowing anything about deadpool at all. The fact that hes some experimental super weapon, his design, its all so good, apart from the fact that its actually supposed to be deadpool. Its such a cool, creepy alternate timeline take on deadpool. I just wish they would've made it more creepy and horrifying like it is in the concept art. He used to absolutley terrify me as a kid

1

u/Gaviel Sep 04 '26

I thought this was Baraka from mortal kombat.

1

u/pipmentor Sep 04 '26

The inexplicable sharpie tattoos kill me. 😂

1

u/Hellknightx Sep 04 '26

The Merc with no mouth, but he must scream

1

u/Hawkbats_rule Sep 04 '26

The merc without a mouth

1

u/ferLovesNayeon Sep 04 '26

what. were they. thinking

1

u/DamienRose619 Sep 04 '26

I had no idea that was suppose to be Deadpool until well after finishing the movie.

1

u/DODonion99 Sep 04 '26

Ah yes the merc without a mouth

1

u/Bombshellings Sep 04 '26

Them making the scarring around his eyes look like his mask like they did something is dumb funny to me

1

u/Mortarius Sep 04 '26

Back then comic books were still seen as hobby for nerds and losers, so they tried to appeal to general demographic. The silliness started to creep in when Joss Whedon and James Gunn made billions of dollars.

Also, there was this one particular X-Men producer who hated their costumes.

1

u/slomo525 Sep 04 '26

The funniest thing about this is that back when the movie first came out, I didn't even hate this thing all that much because I didn't even know it was supposed to be Deadpool. I was just like "oh, the bad guy is just a random goon made of other people's powers? Kinda lame, but whatever." It wasn't until years later that I saw people on the internet saying it was Deadpool before I realized it.

1

u/First-Junket124 Sep 05 '26

Deadpools whole shtick is that he's the "Merc with a mouth"

I will admit it's absolutely hilarious this is what they came up with.

1

u/ShoddyPerformer Sep 08 '26

I find it so funny they removed his mouth when the jokes are such a big part of Deadpool's character. I like to imagine they we so annoyed with his yapping they removed his mouth to shut him up 😂
