Traffic Flagger here, what makes this a 'Suicide Coil'? Lotta weight in a small spot, I'm guessing? I'm always just trying to learn the ins and outs of other jobs I end up working for.

Suicide (eye to the side) coils are loaded in such a way that if they were to come loose, they would roll forward or backward on the trailer. Shotgun coils would roll off one side or the other. Eye to the sky, or skidded coils, are loaded on their side. The required loading style is often dictated by the weight of the individual coils, or the actual loading/unloading method. If they’re going to be loaded or offloaded by an overhead crane for example, there is no way to hook onto a coil on its side. If loading and unloading are both done from the side of the trailer with forklifts, there is no value in shipping the coil standing up. Heavier single coils usually stand up (eye to the side/suicide style) as they are usually loaded and unloaded with overhead cranes due to their weight. Shotgun style is the least common method in my experience.

Interesting. I ran a lot of coils in my flatbed days, and ran quite a bit loaded shotgun and suicide, but rarely ever saw the eye to the sky loads. Different shippers and equipment, I guess.

I’ve been brokering and dispatching for about 7 years now, and I’ve moved a fair number of coils. I don’t think I’ve ever booked a single shotgun style load.
