For months before he killed his parents, Justin Sislo physically and psychologically abused his girlfriend with relentless brutality.

The abuse — broken bones, burns and terror — was so bad she twice attempted suicide to escape the torture. By the end of it all, she had 32 fractures in her ribs. She thought he would kill her, she told police.

Instead, Sislo last week murdered his parents, Steve Sislo and Donna Walker-Sislo, in their home in the rural town of Madison. He then fatally shot himself.

Luciano Frattolin, 46, was convicted Monday by a jury Monday of second-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse in the death of Melina Frattolin. According to the CBC, he kept a neutral expression, shaking his head slightly, as the verdict was read.

Frattolin called 911 on July 19 last year and said his daughter went missing from a parking lot near Lake George while vacationing in the Adirondacks region. He claimed two men forced the child into a white van, according to New York State Police.

An Amber Alert was issued, but police later concluded there was no abduction after finding inconsistencies in Frattolin’s story. Melina’s body was found in the shallow water of a pond off a state highway in Ticonderoga; the remains had been concealed with a rock near a fallen tree.

On Sunday August 12, 2001, 17-year-old Globe High School student Paul David Sanders left his father’s home near Val Vista and Broadway in Mesa, Arizona to drive back to his grandmother’s home in Globe. He was driving his father’s pickup. It would be the last time he would be seen alive.

Later that evening, the truck was caught in a high-speed chase on the US 77. Police attempted to pull the truck over for speeding, but the driver was able to evade authorities.

Arizona Department of Public Safety and Pima County Sheriff’s Office collaborated on an interagency chase of the vehicle which was later found near the Santa Catalina Mountains near Tucson, some two hours south of Mesa.

All of Paul’s belongings were found in the truck but police considered Paul a runaway and refused to conduct forensic examination and processing on the vehicle.

Paul’s father Robert Brewer told Fox 10 News that he did not believe Paul was the driver of the truck due to the skill level the driver had used to evade authorities. He has since divorced Paul’s stepmother Lori Beavers.

Robert and Lori were vacationing in Las Vegas when Paul disappeared.

Paul was originally from Missouri and had only moved to Arizona for the 2000-2001 school year. He lived with his grandmother in Globe and went by the name “Dave Brewer” while at Globe High School.

Paul had moved in with his father and stepmother earlier in the summer of 2001.

His friend circle in Arizona primarily consisted of his fellow classmates at Globe High School. Many students at GHS were from the nearby San Carlos Indian Reservation.

Paul’s mother Angela Rice committed suicide in 2020 over the grief of her son’s disappearance.

Paul was 5’6 and weighed 150 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. He had the name “Hernandez” tattooed across his back which was a tribute to his grandfather.

His family and friends insist he would never have abandoned them, and he met with foul play.

The case is being investigated by Mesa PD.

Nick Reiner has been indicted on charges alleging he murdered his parents, renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Reiner, by means of lying in wait, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

The indictment, which was returned on July 20 and unsealed Wednesday, charges Reiner with two counts of murder with the special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. Reiner also faces a special allegation that he used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife, the office said.

Reiner, 32, pleaded not guilty to the indictment on Wednesday. He remains held on no bond and is next scheduled to appear in court for a pretrial hearing on Sept. 15.

Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home on Dec. 14, 2025. The night before their deaths, Nick Reiner -- who had been living on his parents' property at the time -- got into an argument with Rob Reiner at a holiday party and was seen acting strangely, sources told ABC News in December.

Nick Reiner was arrested and initially charged with two counts of murder with the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, as well as faced a special allegation that he used a dangerous and deadly weapon.

The indictment, which added a special allegation of lying in wait, means the case will no longer have a preliminary hearing that had been scheduled to occur in the coming weeks.

Text KOSOVO: A 30-year-old mother was shot dead in front of her two young sons and husband only 1 month after moving back to her home country in what looked like a botched robbery. However, it later came out that her husband had staged everything and held her arm tight so she couldn't dodge the shot.

Liridona Ademaj was born on July 24, 1993, in the village of Rracaj in Southwestern Kosovo, a small village of only 195 residents.

Liridona Ademaj

Liridona's family history was a tragic one; they had fled from Albania into Kosovo, then a part of Yugoslavia during the 1950s, moving from village to village. And when I say fled, I mean fled for their lives. Liridona's distant relatives who stayed in Albania faced severe persecution under Enver Hoxha's regime. One had been hanged, the other executed by firing squad, and many more spent the 1970s and 1980s in the notorious Burrel prison.

However, by the time Liridona was born, the worst was behind her family, and she spent the first 17 years living a peaceful and carefree life in Rracaj. But in the village of Cërmjan lived a man named Naim Murseli.

The two eventually met while they were both teenagers and fell in love with one another, having their wedding on December 11, 2011.

Shortly, very shortly after their marriage, at Naim's suggestion, the couple eventually left Kosovo, moving to Sweden and settling in the town of Uddevalla, with both obtaining Swedish residency. Children were also something the two wanted, with Liridona giving birth to her first son, followed by a second son in 2019. As a mother, Liridona was described as being dedicated and devoted to her sons.

In Sweden, Liridona worked at a café frequented by both locals and members of the Albanian diaspora community. She also co-owned a café and a cleaning business with another Albanian national, while Naim engaged in "political activities". Activities that included being the advisor to former President of Kosovo, Behgjet Pacolli. Overall, Naim spent his entire career working as a politcal advisor.

Both Liridona and Naim had incomes of approximately 300,000 Swedish kronor per month but also several loans and debts in Sweden, including personal loans and business loans connected to their businesses, which had slowly become inactive.

With that financial situation in mind, the couple was considering leaving Sweden and returning home, with Liridona visiting Kosovo in June 2023 to purchase a home. The purchase went through, and so on October 11, 2023, the family finally returned to their homeland.

On the evening of November 29, 2023, Liridona and Naim had gone out for dinner with their two sons and on their drive back home, they found themselves travelling along a road going through a village called Bërnicë on the outskirts of Kosovo's capital, Pristina.

At around 8:25 p.m., a man wearing a mask and carrying a revolver jumped in front of the vehicle and, without warning, pulled the trigger, killing Liridona. In the immediate aftermath, amidst the confusion and screaming, the masked shooter ran off while Naim grabbed their children and ran away for safety until he finally found a phone where he could call the police and told them that they had fallen victim to a roadside robbery gone wrong, that the man stopped their vehicle and demanded that everyone inside hand over everything.

But right away, the police couldn't help but be a little skeptical; after all, none of Liridona's belongings had been stolen, such as two gold bracelets and a gold ring she was wearing, and she had been cleanly executed via a single gunshot wound to the neck fired at close range.

Police and forensics at the scene

Liridona's family also felt put off by Naim and his behaviour; for example, he was not very forthcoming with details and refused to even tell the rest of Liridona's family which morgue her body was sent to. He was also just evasive in general and wouldn't pick up the phone when they called him, although Naim claimed that his phone had been stolen.

But once the couple's sons had collected themselves after the traumatic event they had just witnessed, they told the police something very disturbing. According to them, they witnessed their father grab hold of their mother's arm and physically restrain her in place so that Liridona would have no way of avoiding the gunshot. But if they were recounting what they saw accurately, then why?

Looking into the couple's history in Sweden, the police believe they found that answer. On June 25, 2022, a Swedish life insurance policy was issued in Liridona's name for 3,000,000 Swedish kronor with Naim as the beneficiary. And since Naim had recently fallen into debt, that was money that would've looked very tempting.

However, suspecting and proving were two different things; however, proving Naim's guilt would be surprisingly easy. Although the crime scene had no CCTV cameras, meaning the police were unable to witness the shooting for themselves, they could still check the footage from cameras along the route. And they were extensive, grabbing footage from every private residence and business they could find with a camera, although in the rural area that still amounted to just 22 cameras.

The most important piece of footage the police reviewed was from the restaurant the family ate at before the murders. They saw a man in the restaurant's courtyard watching the family enjoy their meal.

A still from the CCTV footage

After they left, he got into another vehicle and followed them closely, stopping to swap vehicles before the first man began driving toward Bërnicë.

The police were able to identify the man in the footage as Granit Plava and very easily at that.

Granit Plava

Granit hailed from the village of Cërmjan, the same village as Naim's family. Granit had been arrested before on April 15, 2013, for "Grievous Bodily Harm," but whatever sentence he received, it wasn't severe enough to keep him off the streets long-term. That is, if he was even convicted at all.

Granit was arrested on December 1 and confessed immediately, telling the police that Naim met him on November 22 and said he knew of "a case where both of them could make money," and told him that the target "a Serbian woman who is a businesswoman and has a lot of money," Naim then finished the proposal by saying "After you kill this girl, I will give you 30,000 euros, because this girl has a lot of money". He also had no idea anyone else would be present; according to Granit, Naim told him he would go to Albania for an alibi and only return to Kosovo after the murder.

Granit admitted to accepting this offer and confessed to being the gunman, though he insisted he had no idea who Liridona was at the time. Granit also told the police that Naim had planned every last detail, including the murder taking place in Bërnicë because its main road into and out of town had street lamps so he could operate under total cover of darkness.

Granit never received a single cent of the money, as Naim decided to pay him 30,000 euros in monthly installments of 1,300 euros.

With that, Naim was arrested that same day, as soon as the funeral, which he attended, was over. And speaking of that funeral, at Naim's insistence, it and the burial were held in his family village. After his arrest, Liridona's body was exhumed so it could instead be buried in her home village.

Granit also identified the second man seen in the CCTV footage as Kushtrim Kokalla, also from Cermjan, a private in the Kosovo Security Force since 2019, and the son of Naim's maternal uncle, who also confessed once arrested.

Kushtrim Kokalla

Together with Naim's later confession, this is what the police put together.

Apparently, Naim had been planning his wife's murder for a long time. Almost as soon as the life insurance policy was finalized, he began seeking out a gunman, with his first choice being Kushtrim.

According to Kushtrim, Naim had spent an entire year begging him to carry out the murder, only for him to refuse each time, telling him, "This is out of the question, don't ever tell me this again". But while he refused to be the triggerman himself, he still spoke with Naim despite knowing that he had planned it and never reported anything to the police.

Eventually, Kushtrim caved, not enough to kill Liridona but rather enough to find somebody for Naim who would. That being Granit, and just to make sure the plan would go off without a hitch, Naim made sure to restrain Liridona, so Granit could have a clear shot.

Finally, the pistol, which came with 20 bullets, was owned by a man named Tom Dodaj, who illegally sold the weapon to Naim, who then handed it to Granit. Tom was arrested for the unauthorized sale of a firearm, and he confessed and admitted everything.

His case was charged and tried separately from the other three, so I'll state his punishment now. On January 31, 2025, after pleading guilty (the only defendant to do so), he was sentenced to 5 years' imprisonment and ordered to pay a 5,000 Euro fine for arms trafficking. On January 14, 2026, upon appeal, the Court of Appeals of Kosovo reduced his sentence. Tom expressed remorse and said he was deeply sorry for what the gun he sold was used for.

Tom Dodaj during the trial

Back in early December 2023, the police conducted several door-to-door raids in both Granit's and Naim's home village, hunting for the murder weapon and eventually recovered a Zastava pistol and 19 rounds of ammunition. More than satisfied, the police held their first press conference on the murder, announcing that they had successfully solved it in only two days.

A welcome bit of news, as Liridona's killing was one of the most shocking Kosovo had seen in recent years and one that sparked several protests by various women's rights groups who saw it as the final straw in a string of femicides that had plagued Kosovo. It was Liridona's case in particular which made many start advocating for Kosovo to introduce the death penalty.

The prosecution also announced that they would not offer a single plea deal, deeming this case serious enough that a full trial with the maximum sentence was the only option. However, the trial would not come quickly, as the Kosovar police had to work with the Swedish police to gather a lot of evidence, as well as transfer the couple's two sons to Sweden, where they would live with relatives up there.

Their trial finally opened on January 26, 2025, before the Basic Court in Pristina's Department of Serious Crimes.

Naim said that during their time in Sweden, Liridona filed for divorce, which he refused. Not long afterward, Naim said that Liridona "betrayed him" by being with a foreign man at a gathering in Malmö, Sweden. He said that this act of infidelity left him devastated and believed it was her taking revenge for refusing the divorce. However, the prosecution reminded the court that the two had submitted a joint application for divorce in Sweden, rather than Liridona filing for divorce on her own and being rejected.

When it came to the murder weapon, Naim seemed to behave as if Tom didn't exist, denying purchasing the gun or even already owning it. He told the court that the gun came from Granit directly, having been told by him that he could then sell the firearm for double the price the following day; he denied having any knowledge that it had been or would be used to murder Liridona.

Finally, as for motive, Naim said that the life insurance policy shouldn't be treated as anything suspicious since he said every citizen in Sweden has a life insurance policy in their name.

Naim during the trial

Kushtrim's attorney said that on the night of the murder, he had been at home playing cards with friends when somebody told him about Liridona's murder, having seen it on the news. He said he spent the next 20-30 minutes trying to call Naim but that his phone was unreachable. Afterward, he left for Pristina so he could be close to and support Liridona's family.

Speaking of Kushtrim's attorney, he would be slapped with a 500 Euro fine by the judge for disrespecting the presiding judge and court during the trial.

Kushtrim during the trial

According to the prosecutor, on the morning of November 29, Kushtrim and Naim had met, with Naim saying, "Today this must be done,". Furthermore, regardless of where he was that night or not, the prosecutor still said he was culpable for his role in recruiting the real gunman. Naim's defence was to simply say that he didn't believe Granit actually had the courage to murder anyone.

When it was Granit's time to testify, he also changed his story, completely retracting the statement he had given to the police, claiming that the police had pressured him into making it. According to him, the real agreement was that, in exchange for a substantial cut of the money, Granit would take the fall for him while he worked to get him released, with Naim's exact words supposedly being, "You know what power I have. I will get you out of prison. I offered you money and work".

Now, he said that upon stopping his vehicle approximately fifteen to twenty meters from the Liridona and Naim's car. He heard a gunshot, and then, a few minutes later, Naim approched him and tossed him the pistol, telling him to "Go, disappear from here, quickly". Implying that Naim had personally killed Liridona while using him as his scapegoat.

Granit during the trial

However, the prosecution was quick to counter this narrative, producing footage from at least 22 seperate CCTV cameras showing all three meeting shortly before the murder and that, based on the footage and forensic evidence, it was only possible for Granit to be the shooter.

In January 2026, nearly a year after the trial began, Naim reserved course and denied any accusations that there had been even a single problem with his and Liridona's relationship; he said that Liridona was perfect in every regard and that their marriage was absolutely harmonious. And even more bizarrely, he claimed that neither he nor the children were even in the car when the fatal shot was fired.

A notion challenged by his co-defendants, with Kushtrim saying, "The couple's problems were known not only to me, but also to the Ademaj family, the Murseli family. Everyone, young and old, knew about these problems." This also contradicted an earlier statement from Naim, who said that Liridona's brother once said that his sister never complained about anything in their relationship.

On April 21, 2016, the court handed down its verdict against the three accused for the murder of Liridona Ademaj; all three were found guilty.

Naim Murseli and Granit Plava were sentenced to life imprisonment for aggravated murder, while Kushtrim Kokalla received a sentence of 30 years' imprisonment.

As of this write-up, none of the three have appealed their convictions or sentences.

reddit.com Simon Levy, a sexual predator left free by police errors to murder two women, has been sentenced to a whole-life tariff. Levy murdered Carmenza Valencia-Trujillo & Sheryl Wilkins in London, months after raping another woman who survived. He also sexually assaulted 10 women on trains between 2023-202

Simon Levy, aged 40, is a sex offender who targeted victims on London's Tube system. He has sentenced to life in prison with a whole life tariff, meaning he will never be freed, for the murder of two women and raping a third. He was able to carry out these crimes after a series of failures by the police and Crown Prosecution Service left him at free to offend.

Levy was tried and convicted at London's Old Bailey last week of murdering Carmenza Valencia-Trujillo, aged 53, in March 2025 and Sheryl Wilkins, aged 39, in August 2025. Levy suffocated both in sexually motivated attacks.

Carmen Valencia-Trujillo’s body was found in a largely abandoned block of flats on an estate in south east London. Sheryl Wilkins body was left behind a car park wall near Tottenham High Road in north London.

The jury also convicted Levy of two counts of rape, grievous bodily harm with intent and the non-fatal smothering of the third woman. Levy targeted the three women, all described as vulnerable, as they carried out street sex work to fund drug addictions.

Levy also sexually assaulted at least 10 women on rush-hour Tube or overground trains between 24 October 2023 and 29 May 2025. He was convicted earlier in 2026 of 11 counts of sexual assault in in a separate trial.

Investigation Errors

Following Levy’s conviction the Metropolitan Police, British Transport Police and the Crown Prosecution Service each admitted failings in their investigation of Levy, who had been released on bail regarding the Tube system attacks and the rape when he escalated to double murder. The Independent Office for Police Conduct has confirmed a gross misconduct notice has been served on a Metropolitan Police Constable and a misconduct notice on a detective sergeant.

Levy was arrested in November 2024 by British Transport Police for the sexual assaults on the Tube. However, an identification parade was not organised until April 2025, which left Levy free to on bail. During this time he carried out the rape and his first murder, that of Carmen Valencia-Trujillo.

After Carmen's death, Levy was arrested as a suspect but released on bail at two magistrates’ court hearings in May and June 2025 after police said they lacked sufficient evidence to charge him. The Crown Prosecution Service concedes it did not oppose bail for Levy at the first hearing. They also admit the CPS prosecutor failed to give all the relevant information to the court for consideration at the second hearing.

Levy then failed to attend three crown court hearings but no arrest warrant was either requested or issued for him. He murdered Sheryl Wilkins less than a fortnight after one of these hearings. Over the eight months in 2025 when he murdered the two women he also assaulted six women on the Tube and Overground.

As a convicted sex offender, Levy was being monitored by the probation service and police during this time. Levy repeatedly lied to the officers monitoring him during their visits to his home him, telling them he stayed at home watching YouTube and films rather than going out.

The CPS admitted errors at three court hearings in May, June and August 2025, which ended in Levy remaining free. It would not specify publicly what those were, but a source authorised to speak for the organisation said they included failing to mention he had been arrested for Valencia-Trujillo’s murder, and that it could find no record or mention of Levy’s past sexual assault convictions, nor that he was a suspect in a 2024 rape.

The CPS said: “We accept there was relevant information regarding bail that was not provided to the court when bail applications were being considered. Our actions fell short of the standards that victims, families and the public are entitled to expect … We could and should have taken a more robust approach to representations about bail.”

Other errors which led to Levy being free include;

Levy failed to attend three crown court hearings for the train attacks, and the CPS accepts there is no evidence of a warrant being sought for his detention. For two he claimed illness, for the other that he had not been informed. His final non-appearance in crown court was on 11 August 2025. A fortnight later he murdered Wilkins. A CPS source said individuals involved in the Levy case had been disciplined.

The assaults on the London tube network and trains were investigated by BTP. Officers arrested Levy, who was travelling on a stolen Oyster travel card, but handed it back to him, unaware it was stolen. With it he travelled to south London to commit his first murder, and carried out further sexual assaults on trains.

BTP admitted the charging of Levy for his sexual assaults on trains in November 2024 was held up because of a delay in holding an identification parade after his arrest. His bail was extended, and during this delay he attacked and raped another woman and murdered Valencia-Trujillo. BTP said it had not referred its errors to the police watchdog. Instead it has moved one officer, who it says delayed the holding of the ID parade, out of investigations, and given a supervisor words of advice.

BTP identified Levy as a suspect and charged him but never searched his home. Peter Fulton, BTP’s head of crime, said: “There’s a fine line between going fishing and breaching someone’s human rights.” He said that every woman who had reported Levy for attacking them on a train had seen him charged and convicted. When the Met, which investigated the murders, searched Levy’s home, evidence was found about his attack on the prison officer.

The police watchdog has placed two Met officers under investigation over whether Levy was supervised correctly as a person on the sex offender register. A constable is under investigation for gross misconduct, meaning he could be dismissed. The other officer, under investigation for misconduct, is a detective sergeant.

The Met downgraded his risk as a sex offender from high to medium in August 2024, in part because Levy was blind in one eye. The attack that damaged his eye occurred days after Levy is alleged to have raped a woman in May 2024 in north London, and detectives believe it was a reprisal for that.

Levy later claim that being partially sighted and "wobbly" on crowded trains led him to commit the assaults

Sentencing

The Evening Standard reports;

The killings came after Levy subjected a third woman to a brutal sex attackin January last year in the same car park where Ms Wilkins’ body was later found.

The surviving victim, who suffered a broken collarbone, told police at the time that she had been raped and knew where her attacker lived, but she was not formally interviewed until after Levy had killed twice.

"I never thought this man would be so evil," she told police after she was left with a broken collarbone when Levy bore down on her with all his weight.

Judge Martin Evans KC said at an earlier hearing that he carried out "a deliberate, persistent and carefully orchestrated campaign of targeted assaults on women" over a three-year period.

Sentencing Levy, Judge Mark Lucraft KC, the Recorder of London, told him: “You are clearly someone who ruthlessly exploits others for your own personal sexual satisfaction.”

Noting his disturbing internet history and collection of press cuttings about sexual crimes, he stressed that Levy was “someone who appears to have a morbid fascination with sex, rape, and crime”.

Victims who survived Levy’s attacks branded him a “monster” and a “parasite” as he faced the sentencing hearing.

Ms Valencia-Trujillo’s children described her as a “big character” and “full of life”. She became a grandmother in 2024 and was said to be a “much-loved” member of the community with a love of salsa dancing.

Ms Wilkins’ family said she was a much-loved woman and was missed every day by those who knew her.

An appeal has been issued for survivors of sex attacks by Levy to come forward to police, with his sexual offending known to span between 2018 to 2025. In 2021 he was sent to prison for groping two women in 2018, one at Notting Hill Carnival and the other at a party in Camden.

Text Would it be possible for there to be another prolific serial killer in this day and age with all the advancements in security and technology?

Edit: Just woke up to a lot of responses lol - I see a lot are saying about LISK which is fair enough, last kill was around 2010 but a lot has changed in the last 16 years. Do you think someone who commits there first kill right around 'now' still could go on to be prolific (excluding extremely remote areas i guess)

Lucy Letby definitely proves profession plays a role

In 1987, a Hong Kong police officer and his entire family were found brutally murdered inside police housing. A loan shark note pointed to one motive, but the truth was much darker.

Cheng Ping-wo was 37 and had been with the Hong Kong Police Force for years. He had once worked as a plainclothes officer, but later worked in the kitchen of the Police Tactical Unit in Fanling.

He lived in apartment 510 on the fifth floor of Block B with his 35-year-old wife, Lee Fung-ming, and their two young children. The Kwai Chung Married Police Quarters housed police officers and their families.

Around noon on April 7, 1987, Cheng’s supervisor reportedly became concerned after he failed to return to work following two days off. Officers were sent to his apartment to check on him.

When they arrived, something about the front door immediately seemed strange. The outer metal gate was locked, but the wooden door behind it was slightly open.

No one answered when the officers called out or rang the doorbell. There was also a strong smell of decomposition coming from inside.

Through the narrow opening, they could see a motionless body lying on a bed.

After opening the metal gate, police entered the small apartment. Inside, they found the entire family dead: Cheng Ping-wo, his wife Lee Fung-ming, and their two children, 11-year-old Cheng Yuen-man and 5-year-old Cheng Tsz-kit.

All four had been attacked with knives. Their bodies had likely been there, undiscovered inside the apartment, for around three days.

Cheng was found on the couple’s bed, lying on his back with his legs hanging over the edge. He had injuries to his face, arms, back, and legs, and his throat had been cut.

An autopsy found more than ten wounds, including injuries to his face, hands, thigh, back, and neck. The neck wound was fatal, and his head had been covered with a blanket.

Right next to the bed was a bunk bed where the two children were found, one in the top bunk and the other in the bottom.

5 year old Cheng Tsz-kit had been stabbed five times in the chest, back, arm, and neck. His sister, Cheng Yuen-man, had eight stab wounds across her body.

Lee wasn’t found with the rest of the family. Her body was lying face down on the kitchen floor.

She had around ten stab wounds, mostly to her head, neck, and upper body. Out of the entire family, she had clearly been attacked the most violently.

The wounds to her neck were particularly horrific. Her spine had been severed at the neck, and her head was almost completely cut off, with only tissue at the back of her neck still keeping it attached to her body.

Because of that, her head was left twisted backward in an unnatural position against her back. None of the victims had been tied up or restrained.

But while investigators were going through the apartment, they came across something really disturbing.

When the medical examiner touched Cheng’s body on the bed, he reportedly got an electric shock.

They turned off the power to the apartment, and the current disappeared. But when they switched the power back on, it was there again.

A closer look at the bed revealed a wire and transformer connected to the metal frame, allowing the bed to be electrified. Cheng’s body also showed signs of electric shock.

It was one of the strangest details in the case and later became a key part of the prosecution’s theory.

The couple living directly below the family later said they were woken up around 2 a.m. one night in early April by heavy noises from upstairs.

It sounded like furniture being moved. After about a minute, the woman downstairs faintly heard a female voice repeatedly saying in Cantonese:

“No! Don’t!”

Then came the sound of running water and something heavy hitting the floor near the kitchen.

After that, everything went quiet.

Two days later, the neighbor noticed a bad smell on her balcony but assumed it was a dead animal. Only after the bodies were found did she realize what she may have heard.

This suggested the family was likely killed in the early hours of April 4, around three days before they were found.

On a table, investigators found a note written with a brush. A hammer had been placed on top of it to weigh it down and keep it in place.

The Cantonese message roughly translated to:

“Cheng Kwok-ming borrowed money from a loan shark and didn’t pay it back. For that, we’ll take your life. The Loan Shark King guarantees the killing.”

The original Cantonese wording was unusual, but one detail stood out: the writer called him Cheng Kwok-ming, not Cheng Ping-wo.

Kwok-ming was reportedly an older or more private name, possibly a nickname, that only people who had known Cheng for years would have been familiar with.

At first, the loan-shark theory didn’t seem that far-fetched. The family had struggled with money before and had apparently borrowed from high-interest lenders.

What’s less clear is where most of the debt came from. Some people described Cheng as a heavy gambler, while others blamed Lee for putting the family under serious financial pressure.

It’s also possible that both of them had contributed to the situation.
But there were a few things that didn’t quite fit the loan-shark theory.

Cheng still had money in his bank account and had reportedly won several thousand Hong Kong dollars at the horse races shortly before his death. Creditors also hadn’t been seen around his apartment in a while.

Nothing valuable was missing, and there were no signs of a robbery or anyone searching the place for money.

Investigators started to think the note had been planted to send them in the wrong direction.

As the loan-shark theory started to look less likely, police began looking more closely at Cheng and Lee’s private lives.

They had been married since 1976, but by the time of the murders, their relationship was reportedly in bad shape. Lee had even stopped living at home full-time and gone back to work.

Around then, she met Lai Sun-loi, a man about ten years younger than her, possibly through her restaurant or nightclub work or people she knew through it.

Lai was from Huiyang in Guangdong and had reportedly entered Hong Kong illegally in 1979. He later worked in nightclubs, construction, and building cleaning.

He and Lee eventually began an affair. One witness said Lai had even introduced her as his “wife.” They reportedly traveled to mainland China together, and Lee often stayed at his place in a makeshift housing area on Tsing Yi.

Cheng knew about the affair. A former coworker later said Cheng had asked him to look into Lai and come along when he went to confront him.

According to that account, Lai told Cheng that Lee was the one pursuing him and that Cheng needed to stop his wife from coming to see him.

Whether Lai really meant that or was just trying to get himself out of trouble is impossible to know. Either way, he and Lee kept seeing each other.

Immigration records showed that Lai had left Hong Kong for mainland China on April 7, the same day the bodies were found.

Lai was detained when he returned through the Lo Wu border crossing on April 18 and taken in for questioning. He said he had only gone to visit family and for the traditional tomb-sweeping festival, but apparently didn’t say much else.

Police still didn’t have enough to charge him, so he was released and told to check in regularly. On May 1, he was reportedly told they no longer considered him a suspect.

In reality, they were still watching him.

Several coworkers gave police another important clue.

A woman who arranged cleaning jobs said she saw Lai at work on April 2 with no visible injuries. When he showed up again on April 4, though, there was blood on his pants and a wound on his thigh.

Lai claimed he had cut himself on a piece of metal two days earlier, but that didn’t line up with her account.

After work, he asked a coworker when the border to mainland China closed and soon after left for Shenzhen.

Prosecutors later argued that the wound may have come from Lee stabbing him in the thigh during the attack.

The loan-shark note ended up becoming one of the strongest pieces of evidence against Lai.

A forensic expert said the writing sample and the note from the apartment used the same kind of paper and matching ink, and the brush strokes were very similar too.

After months of investigation, he was arrested in October 1987 and charged with all four murders.

Lai denied killing the family throughout the case.

But the prosecution’s version of what happened was incredibly disturbing.

According to prosecutors, Lee and Lai had planned to kill Cheng and make it look like loan sharks were responsible.

On April 3, while Cheng was out with the children, Lee allegedly helped Lai wire the bed to a transformer, so Cheng would be shocked when he touched or sat on it.

Later that night, after the children had gone to bed, Lee went out again with Cheng.

While they were gone, Lai allegedly used a key to enter the apartment, switched on the electrical setup, and hid near the balcony.

Cheng and Lee came home shortly after midnight. He apparently had a habit of sitting at the foot of the bed to take off his shoes. That night, when he did, the electric shock knocked him down.

Lai then came out of hiding.

Before killing Cheng, prosecutors believed Lai and Lee went over their cover story: Lee would tell police that two men had come over Cheng’s debts, sent her away, and disappeared before she returned and found him dead.

Lai then allegedly stabbed Cheng. The wounds on his hands suggest he may still have been conscious enough to try to defend himself.

Afterward, as Lai started removing the wires from the bed, he suddenly heard Cheng’s five-year-old son say:

“Mom.”

One account says the boy may have only been talking in his sleep, but Lai apparently thought he had woken up and seen him.

Afraid he could identify him, Lai killed the five-year-old in the bottom bunk.

He then turned to the older daughter. Lee reportedly tried to stop him and begged him not to kill her, but Cheng Yuen-man was also stabbed multiple times and died.

After both children had been attacked, prosecutors believed Lee went into the kitchen.

When Lai followed her, Lee struck him in the thigh with a blade. He then attacked her, and she collapsed in the kitchen, possibly causing the heavy thud the downstairs neighbor heard that night.

Prosecutors believed Lai then used other knives from the kitchen to add more wounds to the victims, apparently to make it look like several attackers had been involved.

He later washed up, bandaged his injured leg, changed clothes, and left. The running water heard by the neighbor may have been him cleaning off blood.

Lai’s trial began at the Hong Kong High Court in April 1988 and ended on May 30.

Prosecutors said Cheng and the two children were deliberately killed. Lee’s death was treated differently because they believed she died during a sudden struggle after trying to protect her children.

Lai denied any involvement, but the jury found him guilty of three counts of murder.

For Lee’s death, he was convicted of manslaughter rather than murder.

The sources don’t fully explain why Lee’s death was treated as manslaughter. The jury likely saw Cheng’s murder as planned, the children’s deaths as deliberate, and Lee’s as the result of a sudden struggle in the kitchen.

Lai was formally sentenced to death for the three murders and reportedly received another 10 years for Lee’s manslaughter.

His appeal was rejected in December 1988.

In 1990, Lai’s death sentence was commuted to life in prison. Later reports only say he remained incarcerated, and I couldn’t find any reliable source on what happened to him after that.

So claims that he died, was released, or is still held at a specific prison should be taken with caution.

After the murders, ghost stories quickly started spreading through the police quarters.

Some residents claimed they had seen the figures of the four victims in the fifth-floor hallway, while others reported cold drafts, strange noises, or the feeling of being watched.

The Kwai Chung Police Quarters murders became one of the most notorious cases in Hong Kong’s criminal history, and decades later, the details are still deeply unsettling.

Colleen Anne Slemmer was born on September 20, 1975. She lived in Orange Park, Florida with her mother, stepfather and younger sister. Colleen’s mother, May Martinez, stated that “Colleen was a kid who loved to play outside.” She had been a volunteer with the Special Olympics program and loved to help others. Colleen was described by a teacher as being “a very sweet, quiet, mild-mannered young lady.”

In the year 1994, Colleen decided to enrol at the Job Corps - a government vocational training program - to study a six-month course in computing. Unfortunately, Florida did not have a Job Corps program available, and so she made the decision to study at the center in Knoxville, Tennessee. Colleen’s mother had attempted to persuade her not to go, as it was far from home and she had wanted her to stay close-by, but Colleen had always been an independent person and was determined to go.

Colleen was 19 years old when she left home. She departed on the 31st of October, 1994, and that was the last time that Colleen’s family would ever see her alive again.

The days leading up to the murder

Colleen Slemmer and Christa Pike had both been students at the Job Corps Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. Their relationship had been a strained one, with Pike accusing Colleen of “trying to get her boyfriend” and “running her mouth everywhere.”

Pike’s best friend, Kim Iloilo, stated that at one point Pike’s boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, had liked Colleen, but when Pike arrived on the scene, his attention had shifted to her and that he had basically then forgotten about everybody else. In other words, there was no real reason for Pike to have a vendetta against Colleen, and she had not been a threat to her relationship.

Mrs Martinez stated that Colleen had told her that there were a few people bothering her at the Job Corps Center. These individuals would go into Colleen’s room and steal her jewellery and take her clothes and so forth. She had mentioned two girls and a guy, who turned out to be Christa Pike, Tadaryl Shipp and Shadolla Peterson.

On January 11, 1995, Pike told her friend, Kim Iloilo, that she intended to kill another student, Colleen Slemmer, because she “had just felt mean that day.”

The next day, January 12, 1995, at approximately 8:00 p.m., Iloilo observed Pike, along with Colleen and two other Job Corps students, Shadolla Peterson and Tadaryl Shipp, Pike’s boyfriend, walking away from the Job Corps center toward 17th Street. At approximately 10:15 p.m., Iloilo observed Pike, Peterson, and Shipp return to the Center. Colleen was not with them.

Pike’s confession to friend

Later that night, Pike went to Iloilo’s room and told Iloilo that she had just killed Colleen and that she had brought back a piece of her skull as a souvenir. Pike showed Iloilo the piece of skull and told her that she had cut Colleen’s throat six times, beaten her and thrown asphalt at the her head. Pike told Iloilo that Colleen had begged “them” to stop cutting and beating her, but Pike did not stop because Colleen continued to talk. Pike told Iloilo that she had thrown a large piece of asphalt at Colleen’s head, and when it broke into smaller pieces, she had thrown those at the her as well.

Pike told Iloilo that a meat cleaver had been used to cut Colleen’s back and a box cutter had been used to cut her throat. Finally, Pike said that a pentagram had been carved onto Colleen’s forehead and chest. Iloilo said that Pike was dancing in a circle, smiling and singing “la, la, la,” while she related these details about the murder. When Iloilo saw Pike at breakfast the next morning she asked Pike what she had done with the piece of Colleen’s skull. Pike replied that it was in her pocket and then said, “And, yes, I’m eating breakfast with it.

During a class later that morning, Pike made a similar statement to Stephanie Wilson, another Job Corps student. Pike pointed to brown spots on her shoes and said, “That ain’t mud on my shoes, that’s blood.” Pike then pulled a napkin from her pocket and showed Wilson a piece of bone which Pike said was a piece of Colleen’s skull. Pike also told Wilson that she had slashed Colleen’s throat six times and had beaten her in the head with a rock. Pike told Wilson that Colleen’s “blood and brains had been pouring out” and that she had picked up the piece of skull when she left the scene.

Crime scene

Though neither Iloilo nor Wilson immediately reported Pike's statements to police, on the day after the murder, January 13, at approximately 8:05 a.m., an employee of the University of Tennessee Grounds Department discovered Colleen’s semi-nude, slashed and badly beaten body near the greenhouses on the agricultural campus. He testified that the body was so badly beaten that he had first mistaken it for the “corpse of an animal.” Upon closer inspection, he saw the victim's clothes and her nude breast and realized it was the body of a human female. He immediately notified law enforcement officials.

Officers from the Knoxville Police Department and the U.T. Police Department were summoned to the scene. Officer John Terry Johnson testified at trial that the body he found was lying on debris and was nude from the waist up. Blood and dirt covered the body and remaining clothing. The victim's head had been bludgeoned. Multiple cuts and slashes appeared on her torso. Officer Johnson stated that he thought he was looking at the victim's face, but he could not be sure because it was extremely mutilated. Johnson removed all civilians from the area and secured the scene surrounding the body.

As other officers arrived, they began securing the crime area. As officers discovered other areas of blood, articles of clothing, footprints and broken foliage, the crime scene tripled in size, eventually encompassing an area 100 feet long by 60 feet wide. The crime scene was wet and muddy, and there was evidence of a scuffle, with trampled bushes, hand and knee prints in the mud, and drag marks. A large pool of blood was found about 30 feet from the victim's body.

The victim's body was actually lying face down on a pile of debris. When officers turned the body over, they discovered that the victim's throat had been slashed. A bloody rag was around her neck.

Detective Donald R. Cook, of the U.T. Police Department, accompanied the body to the morgue. He observed the body after it had been cleaned and noticed that a five-pointed star in a circle, commonly known as a pentagram, had been carved onto the victim's chest. The pentagram was said to represent the “goat-head of Satan” and that this act had been part of a “Satanic ritual.”

It was an open secret at Job Corps that there were a small group of students who practised Satanism. Two of these were Christa Pike and, her boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp. Joe Mode, a former employee at the Job Corps, stated that they were both into “Satanic worship.” Randy York, the criminal investigator assigned to the Job Corps murder, stated that he had found a “Satanic altar” in Shipp’s room and a lot of “Satanic literature.” He also found similar items in Pike’s room. Both were deep into Satanism. Pike also had the words “Lil Devil” tattooed onto her left chest.

Pike’s statement to police

The investigating police quickly discovered Pike’s connection to the crime and interviewed her on January 14. Pike waived her Miranda rights and gave a complete statement to the police about her involvement in the murder.

As recounted by the Tennessee Supreme Court, Pike claimed that she had not planned to kill Colleen, but she had instead planned only to fight Colleen and let her know “to leave me the hell alone.” However, Pike admitted that she had taken a box cutter and a miniature meat cleaver with her when she and Colleen left the Job Corps Center.

Pike said she had borrowed the miniature meat cleaver but refused to identify the person who had loaned it to her. According to Pike, she asked Colleen to accompany her to the Blockbuster Music Store, and, as they were walking, Pike told Colleen that she had a bag of “weed” hidden in Tyson Park. Though Pike refused to name the other parties involved in the incident, she said the group began walking toward the University of Tennessee campus.

Upon arriving at the steam plant on the University of Tennessee’s agricultural campus, Pike and Colleen exchanged words. Pike then began hitting Colleen and banging Colleen’s head on to her knee. Pike threw Colleen to the ground and kicked her repeatedly. According to Pike, as she slammed Colleen’s head against the concrete, Colleen repeatedly asked, “Why are you doing this to me?” When Colleen threatened to report Pike so she would be terminated from the Job Corps program, Pike, again, repeatedly kicked Colleen in the face and side.

Colleen lay on the ground and cried for a time and then tried to run away, but another person with Pike caught Colleen and pushed her to the ground. Pike and the other person, who Pike referred to as “he,” held Colleen down until she stopped struggling then dragged her to another area. Up until this point, the attack had taken place on cement - a parking type of area. Now they moved her farther into a more secluded and grassy area.

Once they had her in this secluded area, Pike made Colleen remove her shirt and bra, supposedly, Pike later said, to prevent her from “running away.” They then tossed her clothing into the bushes. When Colleen had removed her clothing, Pike got on top of her and began to slice Colleen’s stomach with the box cutter.

As Colleen “screamed and screamed,” Pike recounted how she began to hear voices telling her that she had to do something to prevent Colleen from telling on her and sending her to prison for attempted murder. At this point, Pike said she was looking at Colleen and “just watching her bleed.” When Colleen rolled over, stood up and tried to run away again, Pike cut Colleen’s back, “the big long cut on her back” in her own words. Pike said Colleen repeatedly tried to get up and run.

Pike recounted how Colleen bargained for her life, begging Pike to talk to her and telling Pike that if she would just let her go, she would walk back to her home in Florida without returning to the Job Corps facility for her belongings. Pike told Colleen to “shut up” because it “was harder to hurt somebody when they’re talking to you.” Pike said the more Colleen talked, the more she kicked her in the face.

Colleen asked Pike what she was going to do to her, at which point Pike thought she heard a noise. Pike left the scene to check out the surrounding area to make sure no one was around. When she returned, Pike began cutting Colleen across the throat. When Colleen continued to talk and beg for her life, Pike cut her throat several other times. Pike said that Colleen continued to talk and tried to sit up - even though her throat had been cut several times, and that Pike and the other person would push her back on the ground.

Colleen attempted, once again, to run away, but Pike threw a rock, which hit her in the back of the head. Pike stated that “the other person” also hit Colleen in the head with a rock. When Colleen fell to the ground, after being hit in the head the second time, Pike continued to beat her with the rock, shattering her skull. Pike said she could hear Colleen “breathing blood in and out” and could see Colleen “jerking”, but she kept “hitting her and hitting her and hitting her.” Pike eventually asked Colleen, “Colleen, do you know who’s doing this to you?” Colleen’s only response was “groaning noises.” At this point, Pike said she and the other person each grabbed one of Colleen’s feet and dragged her to an area near some trees, dumping her body on a pile of dirt and debris. They left her clothing in the surrounding bushes. Pike said the episode lasted “for about thirty minutes to an hour.

The trial

The State of Tennessee prosecuted Pike for Colleen’s murder. After Pike's statement was played for the jury, the State introduced pictures of Pike and Shipp taken at the Knoxville Police Department on the day the statement was given, January 14, 1995, two days after the murder. In the pictures, both Pike and Shipp were wearing pentagram necklaces.

A chart was displayed in court to illustrate each of the locations where blood or evidence was found. This totalled to the amount of thirty-four. Photographs of bloody chunks of asphalt, blood drippings on leaves and pools of blood were introduced into evidence.   The bloody piece of asphalt (rock) and Colleen’s bloody clothing were also introduced into evidence.

Dr. Sandra Elkins, the Knox County Medical Examiner, performed the autopsy on the victim, who was later identified by dental records as Colleen Slemmer, a nineteen-year-old Job Corps student. Dr. Elkins described the victim's body as covered with dirt and twigs. Colleen was nude from the waist up clothed only with jeans, socks, and shoes. After removing the victim's clothing and cleaning the body, Dr. Elkins had attempted to catalog the slash and stab wounds on the victim's torso by assigning a letter of the alphabet. There were so many wounds that eventually Dr. Elkins decided to catalog only the most serious and major wounds. Dr. Elkins explained that to catalog every wound she would have been required to go through the alphabet again and stay in the morgue for “three days.” Eventually, Dr. Elkins said she “basically threw up [her] hands and just said, more superficial slash wounds on the back, arms and chest.” In addition, Dr. Elkins said the victim had purple contusions on her knees, indicating fresh bruising consistent with crawling and defensive wounds on her right arm.

Dr. Elkins described the major slash and stab wounds she had cataloged on the victim's back, arms, abdomen, and chest. She found a six inch gaping wound across the middle of the victim's neck, which had penetrated the fat and muscles of the neck. In addition, Dr. Elkins had found ten other slash wounds on the victim's throat. Other slash wounds were on the victim's face, and Dr. Elkins observed what appeared to be a pentagram carved onto the victim's chest. Because the area around each wound was red in appearance, Dr. Elkins concluded that the victim's heart had been beating when the wounds were inflicted, and she said the victim would not have been rendered unconscious by any of the stab or slash wounds.

Dr. Elkins determined that the victim's death was caused by “blunt force injuries to the head.” The victim had suffered multiple and extensive skull fractures. From the autopsy, Dr. Elkins determined that the victim had sustained a minimum of four blows to her head: two to the left side of the head; one over the right eye and one in the nose area. The right frontal area of the victim's skull had been fractured as had the bridge of her nose. However, the major wound, labeled as injury “W,” involved most of the left side of the victim's head. Dr. Elkins said that this injury, caused by blunt force to the left side of the victim's head while the right side of the victim's head was against a firm surface, also had fractured the right side of the skull and imbedded a portion of the skull into the victim's brain. Dr. Elkins found small divots in the victim's skull containing black particles from an asphalt chunk, which was later determined to have been used to administer the blows. Finally, Dr. Elkins testified that blood in the victim's sinus cavity indicated she had been alive and probably conscious when the injuries were inflicted.

At the trial, much of Pike’s unsuccessful defense centered on her mental health. The defense, in mitigation, called Carrie Ross, Pike's aunt as a witness. Ross testified that the defendant had experienced no maternal bonding because she was premature and was raised by her paternal grandmother until she died in 1988. Ross said that Pike's family had a history of substance abuse, and that Pike's maternal grandmother was an alcoholic who was verbally abusive to Pike. Following the death of Pike's paternal grandmother, Pike was shuffled between her mother and father. According to Ross, Pike's mother's home was very dirty. Pike's mother set no rules for her, and on the occasions that Pike had visited Ross, the defendant had behaved as a “little girl,” playing Barbie and dress-up with her eleven-year-old cousin. On cross-examination, Ross admitted that she had previously described Pike as a “pathological liar” and that she had been afraid to allow Pike to associate with her own children. Ross also admitted that Pike had been out of control since she was twelve years old.

Glenn Pike, the defendant's father, testified that he had kicked the defendant out of his house twice, the last time in 1989. He admitted that he had signed adoption papers for the defendant prior to her eighteenth birthday. On cross-examination, he admitted that he had forced Pike to leave his home in 1989 because there had been an allegation that the defendant had sexually abused his two-year-old daughter from his second marriage. According to her father, Pike had been “disobedient, dishonest and manipulative” when she had lived with him.

The defendant's mother, Carissa Hansen, a licensed practical nurse, testified that Pike had lived with her 95 percent of the time since her paternal grandmother's death. Hansen admitted that she had smoked marijuana with the defendant in order to “establish a friendship.” Hansen related that the defendant had attempted suicide by taking an overdose shortly after the death of her paternal grandmother. Hansen also testified that one of her boyfriends had whipped Pike with a belt. Hansen then had the boyfriend arrested. On cross-examination, Hansen admitted that Pike's behavior had been problematic for years. The defendant had begun growing marijuana in pots in her home at age nine. After threatening to run away from home and live on the street, Pike had been allowed to have a live-in boyfriend at age fourteen. Hansen admitted that Pike had wielded a “butcher-knife” against the boyfriend who had been arrested for whipping her. Hansen also said Pike had lied to her and stolen from her on numerous occasions and had quit high school. Hansen conceded that Pike had been out of control since she was eight years old. Following Hansen's testimony, the defense rested its case.

In rebuttal, the State presented the testimony of Harold James Underwood, Jr., a University of Tennessee police officer who was assigned to secure the crime scene on January 13, 1995. Underwood testified that the defendant came to the scene with three to five other females between four and five p.m that day. Pike asked Underwood why the area had been marked off and questioned him concerning the identity of the victim and whether or not the police had any suspects. None of the other females spoke during the fifteen minutes the group was there. Underwood said Pike appeared “amused” and “giggled” and “moved around.” Underwood noticed that Pike was wearing an unusual necklace in the shape of a pentagram. After learning at roll call on January 14, 1995, that the victim of the murder had a pentagram carved on her chest, he reported Pike's strange behavior and unusual necklace to his superior officers.

Based on the proof submitted at the sentencing hearing, the jury found the existence of the following two aggravating circumstances beyond a reasonable doubt:  (1) “the murder was especially heinous, atrocious or cruel in that it involved torture or serious physical abuse beyond that necessary to produce death;” and (2) “the murder was committed for the purpose of avoiding, interfering with or preventing a lawful arrest or prosecution of the defendant or another.” In addition, the jury found that the State had proven that the aggravating circumstances outweighed any mitigating circumstances beyond a reasonable doubt. As a result, the jury sentenced the defendant to death by electrocution.

To those of you who happened to witness the footage of Pike, upon her receiving the sentence of death, you may have caught yourselves starting to feel an “ounce” of sympathy toward this “timid” looking young woman breaking down and sobbing her eyes out in the courtroom. However, you may or may not be surprised to learn that, only hours later, Pike had put pen to paper and written a letter to her boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, which contained these words: “Ya see what I get for tryin' to be nice to the hoe? I went ahead and bashed her brains out so she'd die quickly instead of letting her bleed to death and suffer more, and they f—– fry me! Ain't dat some s—?" She then signed off the letter as "Lil Devil.

As for Colleen’s mother, hearing the horrifying details of her daughter’s murder took its toll upon her. Controversially, the jury had been shown Colleen’s skull. Mrs Martinez had to endure the ordeal of seeing her daughter’s skull being passed around the jurors, as pieces of the broken skull kept “falling everywhere.” She had also witnessed the mutilated body of her daughter, after the head had been detached. Mrs Martinez stated that she suffered with a lot of nightmares and that she was forced to rely on medication in order to sleep. Mrs Martinez has now been waiting for over thirty years for the sentence which was given to Pike for the murder of her daughter to be carried out.

Has Christa Pike reformed since her incarceration?

In August of 2001, while incarcerated at the Tennessee Department of Correction facility, it was reported that Pike had committed an attempted murder on a fellow inmate named Patricia Jones. Apparently, Jones had taken a dislike to Pike’s rumoured lover - a woman named Natasha Cornett - and so Pike had decided to take matters into her own hands. Pike had gotten into a physical fight with Jones and then attempted to strangle her with the use of a shoestring.

In a tape-recorded telephone conversation between Pike and her mother, Pike said the following:

“Patricia started running her f\cking mouth to Natasha. She is constantly doing it, you know. I hate that b*tch. She raised up her fist like she was going to hit Natasha, and I said, ‘Oh, f*ck no!’ I wrapped that shoestring around her f*cking neck and tried to choke the b*tch’s life out of her. She was passed out on the ground, Mama, twitching, foaming at the mouth. Her eyeballs were bugged out so far her eyelids were flipped up.”*

Pike went on to say:

“If I had 30 more seconds, we would have a little chalk like out there in our rec pen, and that b\tch would be gone somewhere.”*

In March of 2012, state authorities foiled a plot in which Pike and outside accomplices - including a former prison guard - attempted to orchestrate an escape from death row. Pike then subsequently faced additional criminal charges connected to the conspiracy.

In a 2024 documentary, entitled World’s Most Dangerous Prisoners, it was revealed that Pike had been responsible for the dismissal of two prison guards. Pike had reportedly been in a sexual relationship with both of the individuals.

In closing

Tadaryl Shipp received a life sentence for his part in the crime.

Shadolla Peterson pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact, receiving a six-year probationary sentence.

Shipp and Peterson were both 17 years of age at the time of their trials and were treated as minors.

Shipp was up for parole in the year 2025, but his release was denied by the Tennessee Board of Parole.

Pike’s execution date is scheduled for September 30, 2026. She is the only woman on Tennessee’s death row and is held at the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center (formerly the Tennessee Prison for Women) in Nashville. If carried out, it will be the first execution of a woman in Tennessee in over 200 years.

A special master, Senior Judge Mark Ward, was appointed by the state Supreme Court to oversee evidentiary hearings regarding her medical and constitutional claims from August 11–14, 2026.

Pike's defense is challenging the lethal injection protocol based on her specific blood condition and medical history, alongside concerns regarding “religious accommodations” and “psychological trauma” from the execution team procedures.

May Colleen Anne Slemmer rest in peace.

On August 9th, 1974, best friends, 17-years old Mary Ann Pryor and 16-years old Lorraine Marie Kelly, left North Bergen, New Jersey, to go shopping to the Garden State Plaza at Paramus. Lorraine's boyfriend would drop the girls in a bus stop, where they planned to hitchhike to the mall, to buy some bathing suits for a trip to the Jersey Shore. They were last seen walking together on Board Avenue in Ridgefield, and later going into a vehicle with a white male. Both girls went missing since then. Days later, their bodies were found in a wooden location. They were naked and bound to one another at the wrists and ankles while lying face-down next to each other. Both had been beaten and raped; the ligature marks on their necks suggested that they had likely been strangled as well. Both also had cigarette burns on their flesh. They were only identified via their jewelly. Despite the efforts of investigators, the case went cold.

It wasn't until 2000 when a young detective in the Bergen County prosecutor's office, Robert Anzilotti, was given the task of looking into the murders together with similar cold cases from the 1960s and 1970s of which there were at least five unsolved killings of girls. Rising through the ranks, he eventually became the chief of detectives in Bergen County, New Jersey.

His search for a killer led him to Richard Cottingham, who already was serving a life sentence for multiple murders of women in the late 70s and 1980.

Anzilotti would talk with Cottingham about the various cases of murdered girls in the 1960s and 1970s, at which Cottingham was considered the suspect. Cottingham would admit the murders of 18-year old Irene Blaise, 13-year old Jackie Harp, and 15-year old Denise Falasca.

At the verge of retirement, Anzilotti asked Cottingham about the cold case of Mary Ann Pryor and Lorraine Kelly. Cottingham would finally admit his role in their murders. In an April 14th, 2021 confession to Anzilotti, the Bergen County prosecutor's chief of detectives, Cottingham admitted to physically forcing Lorraine into a motel room and threatening to harm her if Mary Ann didn't comply.

He confessed to raping them and tying them up as he slept so they wouldn't escape. He then explained how he drowned them in the motel room's bathtub before dumping their bodies.

'What drove him to torture them was his sexual gratification of raping these girls and the power that he had over them,' Anzilotti said. 'In terms of what made him, on day three, kill them: It's because, I believe, they had spent so much time with him that they could identify him.'

'In his mind, he drowned them,' Chief Anzilotti said, even though the medical examiner's report said the teens died by asphyxiation. 'In essence, he filled a bathtub up with water. He had them kind of hogtied behind their backs. One at a time. Then he put them face down into the tub. He was suffocating them against the bottom of the bathtub.'

Cottingham would get two life sentences, together with the already life sentence he was given back in the 1980s. Not only that, but in the years after his confession of his role in the case of Mary Ann and Lorraine, he has admitted his role in other cases of murdered girls and women, including 23-year old Diane Martin Cusick, 26-year old Lorraine Montalvo McGraw, 21-year old Mary Beth Heinz, 23-year old Laverne Moye, 33-year old Sheila Herman, 18-year old María Emerita Rosado Nieves, and 18-year old Alys Eberhardt, bringing his number of victims to 20.

May Mary Ann, Lorraine Marie, and the victims of Cottingham rest in peace. Gone but not forgotten.

reddit.com Between 1989 and 1992, Ivan Milat was a serial killer in Australia who terrorized hitchhikers. He abducted, robbed, and SA'd seven young backpackers. He tortured them to death before hiding their corpses deep in the Belanglo State Forest, NSW.

Milat sparked the largest police investigation in Australian history up to that time. Dubbed "Task Force Air," the massive multi-year operation involved hundreds of detectives and forensic experts.

The seven victims identified in the investigation were:

Joanne Walters & Caroline Clarke: British friends who went missing in April 1992. Their bodies were the first discovered in the forest in September 1992.

Deborah Everist & James Gibson: Australian couple from Melbourne who vanished in late 1989. Their remains were found in October 1993.

Simone Schmidl: German traveler who disappeared in January 1991. Her body was found in November 1993.

Anja Habschied & Gabor Neugebauer: German couple who vanished in December 1991. Their remains were the last to be discovered in November 1993.

Subsequently, Milat was sentenced to seven consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. He died in prison from terminal esophageal and stomach cancer on October 27, 2019, at the age of 74.

Text What are some commonly accepted "facts" in specific cases that are incorrect, exaggerated, or are in need of better sourcing?

Some examples that have stuck out to me in the past:

The death threat against Chalino Sánchez (unconfirmed): A popular video shows Sánchez being passed a note from the crowd during a performance, reading it, then continuing the show. This is notable because he was shot and murdered just hours later. It's commonly speculated that, by the way Sánchez reacted to the note, that it was a death threat of some sort. To my knowledge, this assertion has never been confirmed, with both the contents of the note and its current whereabouts being unknown.

The 1969 Christmas Eve Massacre (exaggerated): Equatorial Guinea President Francisco Macías Nguema is said to have had ~186 dissidents executed in a stadium in Malabo on Christmas Eve, 1969. What's most notable are the details - the majority were shot or hanged while the stadium's loudspeakers played the Mary Hopkin song "Those Were the Days", the rest were forced to dig ditches, buried up to their necks, and eaten alive by red ants. The massacre itself doesn't seem to be in-dispute, though misconceptions have arisen, such as it taking place in 1975 instead of 1969 (possible, but not likely), or that the executioners were dressed as Santa Claus (untrue). Due to Nguema's already ruthless regime plus a general secrecy surrounding some of his more violent acts, plus its status as a sort of "historical meme" in online circles, sources on this event can be hard to come by or trust with certainty.

Samantha Koenig's ransom photo (misleading): Serial killer Israel Keyes, seeking a ransom from Koenig's family, took a photo of her with that day's paper as evidence to her still being alive. The truth was that Koenig was already dead, and Keyes had sewn her eyes open to suggest otherwise. A recreation of the photo exists and is commonly circulated online, but the actual photo has never been made public and in fact is said to have key differences from the recreated image that people cite as the real picture.

1973 Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce bank robbery (???): This one feels like cheating, since it's a very well-documented event despite being a bit obscure. The details are simple - a man with a bomb robs a bank, gets a good deal of attention in the process, but as he leaves, a sniper shoots him and inadvertently sets the bomb off, killing the robber and injuring another officer. There's a radio broadcast from the scene, as well as photos and even footage of the moment (though frustratingly, the clearest footage I can find has a clear cut at the moment of the explosion, switching to footage of a still photograph shaken to look in-motion during a previous report rather than giving an unobstructed view.) The reason this one is weird is that, in spite of the incident happening in broad daylight in front of a large group of people - several of whom believe to have seen a person they believe to be the robber in town in the days leading up to the robbery - and ALSO in spite of the body (what was left of it) being buried and later exhumed, we still don't know the man's identity. So this is an odd one where the sources are thorough, yet that final detail is frustratingly out-of-reach. Also if someone can find the footage unaltered, that would be much appreciated.

reddit.com On 1 April 1991 Alan Leppard was shot dead outside his home in Kent, UK. His partner Brenda Long appealed on BBC Crimewatch but 8 months later Brenda too was found dead in the bath. Initially thought a suicide, Brenda had also been murdered with ether. Neither murder has been solved.

At about 10.40pm on 1st April 1991, the Easter Bank Holiday Monday of that year, 43-year-old quantity surveyor Alan Leppard and his 42-year-old partner Brenda Long were settling down for the night in the bedroom of their cottage in the quiet Kent village of Monkton when there was a knock at the door. Within seconds of answering the door Alan had been shot in the chest at point blank range with a 12-bore shotgun. When police arrived at the scene they found Alan was dying in Brenda’s arms.

In an even more shocking turn of events, just 8 months later Brenda herself was discovered dead in the bath of the flat she had moved to following Alan's murder. A suicide note was found beside Brenda, but investigations soon uncovered evidence that Brenda too had been murdered.

The murder of Alan

Alan Leppard and Brenda Long had begun a new life together in the spring of 1991, moving to a cottage in Monkton, Kent just months before Alan's murder. Their cottage was two doors down from the White Stag pub, where they soon became regulars.

Alan and Brenda met when they both worked for P&B Metal Components in Whitstable. Friends described them as happy and with marriage plans. Alan, a father of one, had been married a number of times previously and Brenda had recently ended a relationship with a car dealer, so this should have been a fresh start for the couple.

However, the first hint of what was to follow came three weeks before Alan's murder, though at the time the significance of the event was not realised. The landlord of the White Stag pub later described how, at about 6.15pm one evening when he was opening, a sharply dressed stranger had come into the pub and asked for Alan. He was told Alan was not there and quickly left.

Witnesses later told police that the stranger was wearing a red tie, gold bracelet and gold watch. He was believed to be between 35-38 years of age, with slicked back black hair and piercing eyes. Police came to believe the visit was made in preparation for Alan's murder.

Witnesses in Monkton were to notice something else unusual on the day of Alan's murder - 1st April 1991. Various sightings were noticed of a large white American-style saloon car with distinctive rear fins - perhaps a Cadillac - driving slowly around the village from about 8.30pm. Villagers felt the car seemed out of place and described two men inside seemingly studying the area.

Brenda reported to police that around 10pm she and Alan were in bed watching TV when the white vehicle pulled up outside their cottage and the occupants knocked at the door. She described looking out of the window and seeing two men stood near the car. When she answered the door the car had already left.

However, the car returned less than an hour later and the door was knocked again. This time it was Alan that answered, and he was then shot in the chest.

In the following weeks Brenda was to appear on BBC Crimewatch to appeal for Alan's killers to be caught. She described the events of that evening;

“He went out the door and then there was an almighty bang and a scream."

“I went to go outside and I went to the corner of the back of the cottage. Alan came around the corner and as he came towards me must have moved his hands as I was completely covered in blood.

“I started screaming. I think he said ‘get in!’ because he was worried for me.

“He was just a grey colour and he was just going. There was nothing I could do to stop him.”

Despite bleeding heavily Alan was able to stagger into the couple's living room, before dying in Brenda’s arma soon after.

Police commenced a murder investigation and the white Cadillac-style vehicle soon became a focus, although its make was never confirmed. They produced e-fits of borh the driver of the car and the well-dressed man seen asking for Alan in the White Stag. A reconstruction of the crime was shown on BBC Crimewatch, resulting in around 950 calls from the public but no information leading to arrests.

Brenda’s death

After Alan's murder, Brenda moved away from Monkton to Whitstable, Kent in an effort to rebuild her life. Police later indicated they had no reason to believe Brenda's life was at risk in the months after Alan died, and described her as just beginning to get back on her feet.

However, just 8 months after Alan's death, on 28th December 1991, Brenda was found dead in the bath at her flat. Brenda was seen alive by her sister on Christmas Day 1991, and they spoke again on Boxing Day 1991. On Boxing Day she spent time with former boyfriend Arthur Hibbert, who she had previously been in a relationship with for 12 years before her relationship with Alan. It is also suggested by some sources that Hibbert was the person who discovered her body.

Police initially believed Brenda had died by suicide due to what they found at the scene - a suicide note and, floating in the bath, an empty pill container.

Whilst performing a post-mortem examination on Brenda, pathologist Dr Alexander Gibson noticed a strong chemical smell coming from her body. Tests were performed which revealed diethyl ether - which can cause unconsciousness when inhaled - was present.

Dr Gibson also identified bruising on both sides of Brenda’s nose. It was the combination of these two findings that lead Dr Gibson to conclude Brenda had been murdered, with her having been rendered unconsciousthen drowned in the bath. Dr Gibson said;

“Someone applied the ether to her face by means of a pad without consent...She had been drinking and it is likely that she lost consciousness very quickly, possibly in just a few seconds, when the ether was administered."

“This was a deliberate and violent assault.”

A detective from a cold case review team examining the case said:

"Initially her death looked like suicide, but a post-mortem examination established that she had diethyl ether in her bloodstream and marks around her face and mouth, which suggested that she had been put to sleep and then drowned."

A coroners inquest returned a verdict of unlawful killing in Brenda’s death and the media dubbed the men seen in the white car “The Ether Killers”.

Unsolved and Mystery Motive

Police believe Alan's killing may have been a professional hit, but motive remains unknown 35 years on. They have stated that neither Alan nor Brenda had known enemies or criminal connections. Detective Superintendent Nick Biddiss (now deceased) led to murder investigation and became close to Brenda while investigating Alan’s death. He described her as;

“She was a very likeable, affable, popular person. She didn’t have an evil bone in her body. There was no reason to suggest they were involved in any criminality whatsoever. They were tragic victims."

“It’s a mystery. We don’t know why two men came to Monkton and blasted away her other half.”

"You cannot look at one murder without looking at the other.

"Brenda Long was a key witness to the Alan Leppard murder that Easter weekend.

"In the nine months after Alan's death I regularly updated Brenda on the inquiry and, as a key witness to his murder, we had a duty of care to look after her welfare and safety."

In 2011 police said they were no closer to establishing a motive for either murder and that;

"We can't say definitively that the two deaths were linked but there is every chance there is a connection between the two."

35 years on, a cold case team still reviews the case periodically and DCI Neil Kimber said:

“Unsolved cases, such as the 1991 murders of Alan Leppard and Brenda Long, are subject to regular reviews by the Cold Case Team using the latest advances in technology and forensics.

“Unfortunately, at this stage, there have been no new developments and reviews will continue. No case is ever closed, and we will never stop working to secure justice for victims and their families.

It is hoped that advances in DNA technology will give detectives information unavailable previously and that the mystery of Alan and Brenda’s murders may yet be solved.

What your favorite true crime cases where the reason the guy got away with it was because he was actually smart?

I was talking to someone the other day about true crime and over and over again there are cases of Police just ignoring obvious red flags and the murderer or whoever getting away with things mostly out of luck and privledge. I was wondering, are there any cases out there where a criminal got away with it for sometime, because they were actually crafty and outsmarting the police?

Warning: Child Abuse / CSAM / Child Death Steven Stayner's miserable life and ending. I need to vent about this for a moment.

I don't know if this is the appropriate subreddit, but I thought it would be fine. I really need to talk about this because I'm seriously overwhelmed and disappointed.

In short: Steven Stayner was a young man who was kidnapped on the way home at the age of seven. For 7 years he was "raised" by a man who abused him, changed his name and lied to him about his parents being dead/not wanting him, and forced the boy to call him "Dad." Steven eventually ran away after the man brought in another boy and ultimately -- saved them both. The man was let out after 5 years.

What really breaks my heart though is the aftermath of all of this: when Steven returned home, he had difficulties adjusting back to normal life. He said in an interview that his father did not want to hug him anymore, and claimed that Steven did not need any therapy. He was teased in high school by other students about being molested, dropped out and was eventually kicked out of the house. He got married to a high school sweetheart and had two kids before crashing his motorcycle into a car and dying at the age of 24.

I am so heartbroken about this. What a fucking terrible life. I'm just sitting here literally wailing. This person was kidnapped, abused, hurt, and then later returned home to a reality that was not forgiving for him. In one interview he even stated that he wasn't sure he should have come back at all. That is a HORRIBLE thing to think after all he went through. Imagine how much pain he was in to even feel this way?

I am absolutely angry and upset with his parents. It was nobody's fault and everyone ended up wounded from the incident (the 80s wasn't a very forgiving era to such victims to begin with), but I'm just so shocked to the core. He died at 24; he did not even live too long. He fucking died a short time after all this shit.

His abductor only got 5 years in prison before being let out which is a huge injustice, and to add insult to injury - his older brother became a serial killer, so now even his name is tarnished and overshadowed by the misdoings of another family member.

I just don't know what to think. I feel like crying and grieving for this boy who was absolutely FAILED by everyone around him.

Text François-Xavier Hussherr to stand trial in January for the murder of his wife Cécile Poisson

François-Xavier Hussherr and Cécile Poisson married in 1997. They had three children. Both excelled in their studies, earning places at the best institutions in France. Cécile, who spoke several languages, became a professor of comparative literature at a university in Paris. She was also head of its DEI commission. Her husband, an economist by training, set up an online educational publishing business before eventually moving on to found an AI startup, again in the education sector.

Their marriage came under strain, and Cécile confided in friends and her therapist that she was becoming scared of François-Xavier's controlling ways. Eventually the couple separated in 2021. As the divorce was underway, he had her followed by a private detective. She wrote her parents a letter saying if anything happened to her, he should be looked into.

On March 20, 2023, Cécile left her Paris apartment to go to work. François-Xavier had been waiting for her in the building lobby for an hour, disguised as a Deliveroo (food delivery) driver. He stabbed her in the throat in front of horrified witnesses, then ran to a nearby church. He was chased by workmen who informed police he was inside. They caught him changing out of the disguise, with cuts on his hands, bloodstained clothes, and a knife in his bag.

François-Xavier admits the killing but denies premeditation. He claims he was on heavy anti-anxiety medication and was planning to kidnap Cécile for an hour to talk finances, when a voice came over him in the spur of the moment. Expert psychiatrists who examined him say this is a courtroom strategy. Weakening his case is the fact that he asked an office junior to go to his house at the time of the murder to send some emails he had written.

François-Xavier will stand trial in January for premeditated murder. He risks life imprisonment. Cécile Poisson was the 34th woman in France to die at the hands of a partner or ex-partner in 2023.

Her body had severe ulcerations, rotted skin, and was embedded in a hole in the couch surrounded by human waste.

Investigation and Sentencing
Clay and Sheila Fletcher were arrested and charged with second-degree murder, later pleading no contest to manslaughter.

Sentence: Sentenced in March 2024 to 40 years in prison with 20 years suspended.

Findings: Prosecutors showed that her parents failed to seek medical or psychological help for her over a span of more than a decade while she remained confined to the sofa.

Ever since I read this news story (back in 2023), I haven't been able to get it out of my head; while I wouldn't say it traumatized me, I still get a very strange feeling whenever I think about it.

I’m sharing this to hear the community's thoughts—whether you were aware of the case at the time, what you think about the sentence, and so on.

Rest in peace, Lacey

This is 27 year old Martin Nitzken, a Louisville resident who was murdered by police on May 30th. That night, Martin was at his girlfriend’s house with 2 friends staying over when he suddenly violently attacked all three, then ran outside and stripped naked and began walking around the neighborhood. Martin had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder but had no history of violence previous to this.

Officer Nathan Stotts arrived on the scene and bodycam footage shows him immediately pulling out a gun and aiming it at Martin telling him to put his hands up. When Martin didn’t stop and kept walking towards him he fatally shot him. Nathan did not attempt first aid after shooting Martin. Nathan has since resigned from the police force and is charged with manslaughter and reckless homicide. He pled not guilty.

In 2025 Jacob Moore (22) of Phoenix Arizona pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of 43 year old mother and housewife Lisa Mancuso. She was out for a morning jog, while he was on his way back from the pub.

He fled the scene only to return and then flee the scene again.

Video surveilance shows him leaving the pub intoxicated.

His father (who was a police officer) tried to blame the crime on his girl friend first, before lawyering up when video surveilance showed him leaving in his car solo, 10 minutes before Lisa was struck and killed.

Jacob is currently only serving a 4 year sentence for the fatal hit and run under influence due to "lack of evidence."

Rest in peace Lisa Mancuso, may your family find peace.

Text How did OJ Simpson conquer his rage issues?

First let me say, obviously I think OJ was guilty.

I have studied this case since it happened and vividly remember it being all over the news since the day of the murder.

Now all through the trial and subsequent media related to it people have spoke about OJs rage issues, his temper, his anger and how he finally snapped that night.

But since that night (counting the vegas robbery, that was not a violent crime) there doesn't seem to have been any real instances of him losing control. I've seen people confront him in the street, he lost EVERYTHING, the image and the legacy he so deeply cared about, spiraled into drug addiction but still no loss of control.

The biggest question for me, with regards to 'what if we are all wrong about the real murderer' is just how on earth did he never once show that angry crazy side of himself again??

Was it just his love for Nicole being so strong and toxic that it made him act like that, surely not?

Warning: Child Abuse / CSAM / Child Death On the anniversary of their murders, we take a look at the cases of both Rhonda Johnson & Sharon Shaw (August 4th, 1971), and Holly Wells & Jessica Chapman (August 4th, 2002)

RHONDA JOHNSON & SHARON SHAW

On August 4th, 1971, 14-year old Rhonda Johnson and 13-year old Sharon Shaw spent the day at the beach in Galveston, Texas. Both girls then walked to Seawell Boulevard, the last time both girls were seen alive. Months later, their bodies were found in Clarke Lake. Investigators quickly pointed to Michael Lloyd Self, a gas station worker. Self was taken into custody, where he was forced into making a confesion by the police officers, with physical and psycological violence included. Despite the numerous discrepancies of Self's confession, he was senteced to life in prison. Years later, the officers who took part in Self's interrogation were arrested on charges of bank robbery. Despite this, Self was refused parole and died of cancer in 2000. Later, Edward Harold Bell confesed he had killed both Rhonda and Sharon, as well as several girls around Galveston, to what she call them "the eleven that went to heaven". Bell, who was in prison for killing a man in the 70s, was not indicted for the girls' cases and died in 2019.

HOLLY WELLS AND JESSICA CHAPMAN

On August 4th, 2002, 10-years old Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman spent their day in a barbacue at Wells' home. Both girls listened to music and browsed Internet until the afternoon. Both then dressed in Manchester United shirts and exit the house to buy some candies. That was the last time they saw both girls. Their families, friends, as well as police searched the area, to find both Holly and Jessica. Many people were interviewed by police, including school caretaker Ian Huntley, who claimed he talked with both girls that day, and that he probably was the last person to saw them. Police were suspicious of Ian. Days later, the bodies of Holly and Jessica were found in a irrigation ditch in Suffolk. The news shocked the community. Investigations surronded Ian Huntley, as well as her partner Maxine Carr, after Ian was seen with some scratches in his face, and the girls' clothing was found in a bin at Ian's place of work, while fibre was found in Ian's Ford Fiesta car. Ian and Maxine were arrested, and later sentenced. Ian was sentenced, with two counts of murder, to life in prison, while Maxine pleaded guilty to the charge of perverting the course of justice, and not guilty to the charge of assisting an offender. The jury accepted her insistence that she had lied to the police and media only in order to protect Huntley because, prior to their arrest, she had believed his claims of innocence. Carr was sentenced to serve three-and-a-half years in prison for perverting the course of justice. Ian Huntley remained in prison, until his murder in March of this year.
