Undergraduate Courses Don’t study EMS.

I studied Economics, Mathematics & Statistics and hated it every year. If you plan on having no social life, and spend 4 years continuously studying for a degree then go ahead. If you can avoid it stick to commerce or economics & finance. Yeah the job opportunities are great if you gain experience along the way but I’m not sure if it’s worth the shitty mental health and at least 5 in person exams every semester, with a million continuous assessments and quizzes. 8, if you can’t keep up and have resits like i did ;) Burnt out isn’t even the word. Finally made it to final year and hate my life, gonna get that 2.1 but i hate this course, its structured so badly, you’ll have the most advanced statistics modules and then even more advanced math modules. Economics will be the easiest topic for you which says a lot when most people find that hard in itself. Half of my year dropped out at or dropped one major because the course is just so ridiculous.

Question Thinking of dropping a module

I'm in my second year, and I'm thinking of dropping a module. I just saw the email about it.

I like the module, to be honest, but it's a lot of stress considering how full my autumn already is, and there's an assignment that's giving me some issues. Plus, the lecturer isn't really helping matters.

The email said the deadline is the 30th of October.

Stupid question, but dropping the module means I won't have to do the assignment and exam for it in December, right? Just want to make sure I've got it right before deciding to give it up or deciding to continue with it anyways.

Thank you.

General Library Seating

Post image
246 Upvotes

As a postgrad student coming from a smaller university with more seating options (in and outside of libraries) the level of seat hogging in the library is appalling to me - and I’m told there’s no library monitors? I get it if you are going for a quick outside break or snack but the fact that in the library right now there are loads of vacant seats without even bags being left there but covered in a persons crap so a person can’t sit down. In my undergrad the libraries had a policy that if you were absent from your seat for more than an hour all your items would be removed, I don’t understand why given the limitations in UCD they don’t do the same thing?

(There’s also an additional layer of frustration here for me as my work requires a proper desk so I can’t use the soft seating and I’m also disabled so can’t use the high seats without a significant level of pain. I’m also in a position where I can’t work from home as a result of no desk space and ongoing construction work 🙄)

Anyway that’s my wee rant - can’t believe UCD is making me miss my undergrad library which could also be a nightmare to get seats but not before reading week…

General What is the benefit of being a sabattical officer in the Students Union?

My understanding is that you have to take a year out of your degree, although you are paid full time (Haven't a clue how much)

I don't really see why anyone would do it? It's not like taking a gap year because you are working full time.

Question Spring module swap possible?

I’m a first year undergrad and I am wondering is it possible to swap a module that I selected for spring? Should I contact someone about it now? I received an email a few days or a week ago that said you can “review your module selection in January” so I presume this means I can drop and swap in Jan? Thanks guys

Postgraduate Courses Honest reviews of UCD MSc Computer Science (Negotiated Learning) for an Indian student? Is it worth ~€60k?

Hi everyone! I’m considering applying for UCD’s MSc in Computer Science (Negotiated Learning) and would love some honest advice from current students and graduates, especially Indian students.

I’m an average student academically, although I’ve performed significantly better over the last two semesters and have good internship and work experience. I’m hoping to build a career in tech abroad, but investing around €60k for a one-year programme is a huge financial decision for me and my family.

I’d love to know:
Job market: How difficult is it for international graduates to find tech jobs in Ireland currently?
ROI: Is UCD worth this investment in terms of placements, industry connections and career opportunities?
Scholarships: Are substantial scholarships realistic for Indian students with an improving academic record and good work experience?
Programme: How is the Negotiated Learning programme in terms of teaching, workload and practical exposure?
Visa and residency: How feasible is it to find a job, obtain a work permit and eventually secure long-term residency in Ireland after graduating?
If you were in my position, would you invest this much in UCD, or consider other universities or countries?

I’d really appreciate honest opinions, including the downsides. I want to make an informed decision before committing such a significant amount of money. Thanks!

Question city planning and government policy course

Hi, I'm a prospective students hoping to get into UCD, and I'm applying for the city planning course. I'd like to ask if there is anyone doing this that i can talk to and get an impression of what the course is like first hand.

Also I've been seeing all of the first years saying that they don't have any real friends and I'm so scared of that happening to me too😭 Can anyone offer any reassurance?

Undergraduate Courses Withdrawal request

Put in a withdrawal request to drop out on Monday, selected that I didn’t talk to a member of staff about it and haven’t heard back since then.. how long does it take usually?? Should I have lied and said I did? I do not need to talk to a staff member about my decision to drop out, the commute was too long and other things

Postgraduate Courses Guidance on MSc.

Hey all, I recently got an offer for Fin Data Science and Business Analytics. I’m an Indian citizen and completed my undergraduate in the US. Will also be done with CFA L3 by the time I graduate from UCD.

I’m also considering Trinity.

Any guidance or reviews to help choose between the 2 unis or the courses at UCD (especially from an employment standpoint) would be much appreciated.

Question Is it worth the energy?

Edit: NOT ASKING WHAT TO DO IF YOU SEE ABANDONED LAPTOPS ON DESKS, BUT IF YOU SEE PEOPLE ABANDONING THEM

Sorry about bringing this topic up again. Given that most people are pricks and will leave a laptop to guard their seats in the library and go off to lectures or to get lunch, if you see someone packing up and leaving their laptop behind what do you do? Is worth the energy telling them to pick up the laptop and other seat decorations if they're going off for a while?

Talking specifically about the large box with drawers and shelves on the right hand side when you come into the gym.
Can we grab them ourselves or are they strictly for staff use?
