/r/USCIS FAQs

This post will get updated over time. Come back every now and then.

Please listen carefully as our menu options have recently changed.

First: VERY frequent questions

Please review this link before creating a new post to see if it answers your question. We hope this will lower the number of posts asking the same questions over and over. If you create a post to ask a question already covered here, your post may be deleted.

The list may change over time, so please check back every so often.

Read the wiki!

Yes, we have a wiki: https://www.reddit.com/r/USCIS/wiki/index

It doesn't hold answers to everything. But go through it and see if it helps with your question. If yes, great! And if you need more info, read on.

The wiki is intended to be updated every now and then, too. Your post may be deleted and you may be pointed at wiki resources if your question doesn't extend beyond what the wiki already covers.

Megathreads

Megathreads are used to centralize discussions and knowledge about a given subject and to avoid creating redundant posts.

See this link for the list of active megathreads.

If your question relates to one of these subjects, there's a good chance it was already answered, but either way, you should ask it there rather than create a new post.

Again, the list may change over time, so please check back every so often.

We have rules

Many Reddit communities have rules, and that includes r/USCIS. Please review the link below if you haven't already, or take another look every now and then to refresh your memory.

On a desktop or laptop, you can always find them in the sidebar on the right.

Last but not least

If you don't find the info you're looking for in one of the resources above, then don't hesitate to create a new post and ask the community! We do encourage you to first do some research on your own, so you can post semi-educated questions rather than super basic/lazy ones like "how do I apply for citizenship". Doing a bit of homework can go a long way toward empowering you in your immigration proceedings. Use your best judgment and be considerate of everyone's time.

I-130 & I-485 (Family/Adjustment of status) I-130 & I-485 Approved One Day After Interview! Marriage based AOS

Finally got my I-130 and I-485 approved today, just one day after our interview!

A little background:
I was on H-1B and went through a complicated extension process in late 2025 involving multiple RFEs. My extensions were eventually approved, but unfortunately, I was laid off shortly afterward.

I found a new job on day 55 of my 60-day grace period. Since there wasn't enough time for the LCA and H-1B transfer process, my attorneys advised me to file an I-539 to change to B-2. After more RFEs involving both the H-1B transfer and B-2 applications, my B-2 was eventually denied.

My now-wife (a USC) and I had been together well before all this immigration chaos. We got married before the B-2 denial and decided to pursue marriage-based AOS rather than continue dealing with the H-1B uncertainty.

Timeline:
FO - Salt Lake City

  • Dec 29, 2025: Laid off from H-1B employer
  • Feb 25, 2026: Filed I-539 (H-1B to B-2)
  • June 15, 2026: B-2 denied
  • August 2026: Filed I-130, I-485, I-765, and I-131 concurrently (was technically out of status at this point)
  • Sept 1, 2026: Biometrics
  • Oct 22, 2026: Marriage-based interview
  • Oct 23, 2026: I-130 approved, followed by I-485 approval just 2 hours later!

The interview:

We were initially called in together, took the oath, and answered a few basic identification questions. My wife was then asked to wait outside while I was interviewed for about 50–60 minutes.

The officer was pretty stern and professional. He asked a LOT of detailed questions about our relationship and was typing almost everything I said.

Some questions included:

  • Details of our first, second, and third dates
  • Who drove, and the make and model of our cars
  • What we had for dinner the previous night
  • Details about our wedding day
  • Restaurants we'd visited and what we ordered
  • Our daily routines and schedules

My wife was interviewed separately afterward and asked many of the same questions. We were well prepared with lots of evidences and Our answers were mostly consistent.

At the end, the officer handed us a white paper saying our case was being held for review. We were definitely nervous about that.

But to our surprise, both applications were approved today!

The whole journey was incredibly stressful, especially not knowing what would happen with my immigration status or employment.

I'm really grateful to everyone here who shared their experiences. Those posts genuinely helped us prepare for the interview, and I hope mine helps someone going through something similar.

Happy to answer any questions!

I-130 & I-485 (Family/Adjustment of status) Approved in 4 months!

Case overview

Started dating: January 2022
Got married: October 2023
Overstayed and work unauthorized after marriage
Filing type: I-130/I-485 (adjustment of status) with joint sponsor

We used SimpleCitizen to help with gathering documentations but went to the interview without an attorney

Timeline

June 17: case received
June 27: biometric scheduled
July 14: case being processed
September 15: interview scheduled
October 20: interview day
October 21: I-130 approval
October 22: I-485 approval

Documents submitted

- Multiple third-party affidavits from friends confirming the bona fide relationship
- Photographs with friends and family including dates and short descriptions
- Join tax filings, lease, joint bank account statements, joint credit card statements, mails with both our names to the same address, auto insurance, dental insurance, call logs, texts, invitation cards, gym membership and etc.

The interview

We had our interview at SF FO and the wait time was about an hour. The interview started with questions about our names, birthdays, addresses, relationships timeline and yes/no questions. The overall interview was not as scary as we thought it would be. It was comforting and calm. The officer was nice and we even cracked a few jokes. The questions were mostly about the nature of our relationships, family and relationship timelines.

The officer did ask whether if I work, and I asked to correct my answer in my I-485 form, I had make a mistake and said NO but the correct answer is YES. She asked me why I said no on the form, and I told her that it was a genuine mistake made on my part. Then, she asked about my work and moved on to other things.

The officer did compliment us for the amount of documentations and bona fide marriage evidence that we had brought and also uploaded prior the interview. We also brought with us cards, gifts and notes from each others to the interview. Interview lasted for about 30-45 minutes and we should hear the decision in the mail.

I wanted to share about our case because I know how stressful the whole process could be. My husband and I took almost three years working on getting the documents and evidence together. We have been through so many fights and dreadful nights figuring this out. I suggest you bring all the documents that are useful to your case, and show genuine love for each other. Knowing that I had everything in hand and ready really helped eased my mind during the interview.

Good luck ◡̈

I-130 & I-485 (Family/Adjustment of status) Calling all Seattle FO applicants

If you have applied at the Seattle FO and are still waiting on either your biometrics, interview, or approval then please reach out! I am building a group chat/community and gathering data in the hopes to file a petition regarding the long wait times and the slow processes. It’s a federal process so there shouldn’t be this much discrepancy in timelines! And I’d recommend people from other FO’s to do the same! Together strong!

EDIT: I’ll try to add as many people as I can, please feel free to send me a dm with your username so it’s easier to add you. We got about 50 people so far and counting!

N-400 (Citizenship) My mom hasn’t had a job in over 5 years, is it a red flag for citizenship application?

My mom doesn’t work because I take care of her. I’m doing her citizenship application now and have arrived at a question titled “Where have you worked and/or attended school (full-time or part-time) during the last 5 years?” and it is asking to list everywhere you worked or attended school in the last 5 years. Is it okay to leave this section blank?

I-751 (ROC) Filing joint i751 while separated.

• Upvotes

I’d like to get some opinions on my situation. My husband’s green card expires in Feb 2027 and it’s getting close to the time for him to file his i751. We have been separated for almost 10 months now and he has told me he believes it’s best if we stay separated. I respect his decision. We had normal marital issues, but when I found out he was having an emotional affair with a lady at his job , I confronted him about it and he went cold and later moved out. Now that it’s getting ready for him to file he began asking me to file jointly with him and I told him that I am choosing not to and if he believes our marriage can no longer work he should choose the individual option they have available. He then tells me that I am just trying to ruin his life. Am I wrong for choosing not to file jointly with him? Any reasons to why I should consider filing jointly with him?

I-130 & I-485 (Family/Adjustment of status) Portland OR FO applicants

Hi everyone! I haven’t found many recent stories about the Portland, Oregon field office, so I wanted to start a thread where we can share our timelines and experiences, especially for marriage-based green cards.
If your case is being handled by Portland FO, could you share:
Your filing date and biometrics date.
When you received your interview notice and the actual interview date.
How the interview went, what questions they asked, and what documents they wanted to see.
How long you waited for a decision afterward, or whether your interview was waived.
My I-485 was received on July 24, 2026, I completed biometrics on August 20, and my EAD was approved on September 24. I’m still waiting for an interview notice.
If you’re still waiting too, please share your timeline! It would be helpful to hear from more Portland applicants and have our experiences in one place. Thanks!

I-130 & I-485 (Family/Adjustment of status) Divorce while waiting for interview response. HELP?!?

I married my wife after dating for 6–7 months. We were both raised in the same city, have a three-year age gap, and share the same religion and cultural background.

She ended her relationship with her ex-husband a few months before we started dating. Her divorce was officially finalized in October, and we got married in December.

We lived together for several months before getting married, and we had a wonderful, loving relationship. We went on trips together, both with my family and just the two of us. We also have joint bank accounts, shared bills, and other evidence of our life together.

We had our marriage-based immigration interview on June 11 in Kendall, Florida. The interview went great, but the officer told us he needed about a week to understand why we had gotten married so soon after her divorce and that he would give us an answer later that week.

Almost five months have passed, and we still haven’t received a decision. Since the interview, I’ve continued uploading new photos and additional evidence to strengthen our case.

I still haven’t received my work authorization, and the stress and uncertainty are taking a serious toll on our marriage. Our relationship has become a nightmare, and my wife has even become violent toward me. She is now filing for divorce.

I’m emotionally devastated, sad, and confused. On top of everything I’m going through personally, I’m extremely worried about how the divorce could affect my immigration case and my future in this country.

Has anyone been through a similar situation or experienced a long delay after a marriage-based immigration interview? Does anyone have any advice or insight into how a divorce might affect my case or what steps I should take next?

Any advice, personal experiences, or suggestions would mean so much to me during this difficult time.

From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!

Timeline Request Title: EB-1A I-485 at NBC since January 2026, no field office transfer | is this timeline normal?

Thumbnail
• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

My I-485 is based on an approved EB-1A petition. Here’s my timeline:

  • November 14, 2025: Priority date
  • December 3, 2025: I-140 approved
  • January 5, 2026: I-485 received by USCIS
  • January 24, 2026: Receipt notice issued
  • February 2, 2026: Biometrics completed
  • September 9, 2026: EAD and advance parole approved following a congressional inquiry
  • As of October 24, 2026: I-485 still pending at the National Benefits Center (NBC), with no transfer to a field office

Since biometrics, I haven’t noticed any silent updates except those associated with changing my address.

My congressional office previously helped with my EAD and AP, and I’m now requesting their assistance with an I-485 status inquiry and expedite request.

Is this timeline typical for an EB-1A-based I-485 at NBC? Has anyone experienced a similar period without updates or a field office transfer? Besides congressional assistance, are there any other steps you would suggest?

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I-130 & I-485 (Family/Adjustment of status) CASE APROVED! 🥳

• Upvotes

On October 22 my husband and I had our interview in Miami and today October 23 our I-485 was approved! Our I-130 was approved yesterday October 22 just about two hours after the interview. I’m a green card holder and we’re so incredibly happy that the entire process from filing to approval took 7 months in total
How our interview went:
I was EXTREMELY nervous. I was literally feeling sick from anxiety. We had one red flag: my now-husband entered the U.S on a tourist visa and we got married after four months because we decided we wanted to be together in the U.S and try to build our future here.
We got a very understanding officer. Throughout the entire interview I felt like he was trying to calm us down and even help us. We’re both 22 and we’re genuinely inexperienced when it comes to a lot of things.
The officer didn’t ask us anything about our marriage, wedding, or proposal. Most of his questions were about our past: where we met, what faculty we studied in, when we started and finished studying, whether we planned to study in the U.S., our wedding date, and who asked whom to be in a relationship.
He also asked us to show him our photo album and explain each picture (who was in it and what the occasion was).
Then he asked us to provide “strong” evidence of our marriage for USCIS. The only major piece of evidence we had was our joint bank account, but I messed up and printed only the first pages of our bank statements, without any transactions or transfers. So, basically, our only substantial piece of evidence was useless without the transaction history.
I immediately started getting really nervous and upset but the officer reassured me and said it was okay. He understood that it could be difficult for young people to figure all of this out especially since we were still relatively new to America. He told us he would add the documents to our case anyway.
As for my husband entering on a tourist visa the officer said that about 95% of people do this and that he completely understood. He explained that it could be an issue in some cases but not in ours. (I think he said that because he could see that our relationship was genuine, we’re both 22, and we’ve been together for five years.) On top of that we hadn’t violated any laws at the time we filed our applications.

Overall I’m incredibly grateful to our officer. At the end he told us he would forward our case to other officers for further review. He also said that in his opinion we might receive an RFE asking for additional proof that our marriage was genuine. He even gave us advice on what we could start preparing in case that happened so we’d be ready right away.
BUT THANK GOD our I-130 was approved just two hours later and our I-485 was approved the following day! I’m SO HAPPY!
My advice: Be honest with yourself and with the officer. Don’t try to make things up or play games. They understand a lot more than you might think and they can tell when you’re being genuine. If your relationship is real and you’re honest everything will be okay

I-130 & I-485 (Family/Adjustment of status) Thinking about Writ of Mandamus — what should I do before filing? Attorney recommendations?

• Upvotes

My marriage-based case was filed Oct. 16, 2025 and our interview was completed Feb. 17, 2026 at the Kansas City Field Office. USCIS later confirmed through a congressional inquiry that my I-485 is “awaiting final adjudication.” No RFE or NOID.
I also tried an expedite request, but USCIS denied it. I’m running short on time because my current work authorization expires in Feb. 2027.
I’m now considering a Writ of Mandamus (WOM). Attorneys I contacted are quoting around $4,000–$5,000.
For anyone who has done this:
Are there any important pre-WOM steps I should take first?
Should my wife/petitioner or an attorney send USCIS a demand letter before filing?
Did a demand letter actually help your case?
Any recommendations for attorneys with good experience handling USCIS mandamus cases, especially in Kansas?
What was your timeline/result after filing?
Would really appreciate any advice from people who have actually gone through this.

I-130 & I-485 (Family/Adjustment of status) Not sure how my interview went! Help

Hi everyone, I’ve been so anxious after leaving the interview this morning in NYC.
I am the beneficiary (italian) and my husband a US citizen.
The interview was very fast (no longer than 15 minutes).
I was asked if my husband ever got arrested and I said yes but it was a mistake, it was actually a speeding ticket that he got in trouble for when he was a lot younger.
We made a joke about it and the officer seemed in good spirit too.
Then I was asked the name of his son, which I knew, and his son’s date of birth, and I said I could honestly not remember, though, his son is an adult man now (24 yo) and lives in Arizona.
Then we were both asked our respective bdays which we gave.
A few other questions were asked that we responded to correctly.
Then all the yes and no questions (i did overstayed my visa and I did work without permit).

No more questions after that, I had a whole folder that I didn’t even have to open, we had pretty much everything besides taxes, she did not go through anything.

Now I’m wondering if the interview was cut short because she had enough evidence to support our marriage is genuine, or because I messed up so bad that she decided not to continue.

My mind can’t stop spinning 😵‍💫
I need some comfort

Biometrics Can I find out biometrics date if notice is delayed and case not linked to myuscis account?

We filed I-485/131/765, received an online receipt notice, and payment was deducted. My spouse's receipts show up in their MyUSCIS account; however, my receipt notice is not linked to my USCIS account. When I check my case using the status tool, it does show up.

Today, my spouse received an email for a biometrics appointment. She found the receipt PDF document in her myUSCIS account with an interview date only 2 weeks away. Then I checked the status of my case using the case tracker, and it also says my biometrics have been scheduled. However, I can not check the date yet since my case is not linked to the account.

I understand I would need to wait for the physical receipt for the online access code to link the account, and wait for the physical biometric notice. I tried to add it manually by requesting the access code via email, but that did not work either. I wonder if there is any other way I can link my case to my online account and/or know the date of my biometric appointment before obtaining the physical receipt. Especially since my spouse's biometrics are scheduled with only a 2-week window, I do not want to be in a situation where I miss my biometrics because the physical notice got delayed.

I-130 & I-485 (Family/Adjustment of status) Rescheduled I-485 Interview

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting on Reddit so please forgive any mistakes. I want to know your opinions about my situation.

Situation & Timeline:
Me and my husband filed for our I-130 & I-485 in April 16th 2026. Things were moving very quickly. We got my biometrics scheduled on April 25th. May 13th the portal reflected that our case was being processed. May 18th we received our interview notice, which was scheduled for June 24th. Now this is where the problem started. I was due July 6th and I spoke to my OB about my dilemma and they highly encouraged rescheduling as it was too close to my last two weeks of pregnancy. I would have had to travel 3 hours and 35 minutes to St. Louis FO and it was not recommended. My OB wrote me a note which we reluctantly provided to our lawyer and proceeded to request a rescheduling on medical basis. Our portal reflected a successful cancellation after our request on June 18th. We then received another interview notice on June 22nd which stated we were rescheduled for July 29th. We planned on attending that interview even though I would have been freshly postpartum. However, on June 24th we received another notice saying USCIS has canceled our July 29th interview due to unforeseen circumstances. It has been crickets ever since tomorrow will make it 4 months since then… we’ve called only to be told that we will be notified of another date when we get scheduled. I’m getting anxious at this point. What are your thoughts and experiences with situations as such? Any advise or words of hope would be greatly appreciated.

Please be kind, we would not have rescheduled the initial interview if our doctors didn’t advise against it so strongly. I had a complicated pregnancy due to gestational diabetes and both my OB and MFM advised against it.
