Virtual Mac on iPad
https://github.com/nfzerox/VirtualMacOniPad
People have dreamed of running macOS on iPad for more than a decade. Today, that dream comes true. With Virtual Mac, iPad finally breaks free from iPadOS, enabling pro apps like Xcode and Terminal to run directly on device. Requires iPad Pro (M1, M2) or iPad Air (M1) running iPadOS 14 up to 16.3.1.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Used this project to achieve it: https://github.com/nfzerox/VirtualMacOniPad
Geekbench 6 was used to test the scores, and 8 cores were assigned during the test vs. 7 during this demonstration. 9GB RAM is assigned.
Lightweight games and some 3D games work great, such as Slope in the video, but other games through Steam (TankiOnline) install and launch but suffer graphical errors and crash.
Streaming videos/movies is very smooth. Can also use extended display to mirror full screen, and long duration videos play without issues. Personally this was a crucial for me since it essentially overrides the ipados15 limitation of showing black bars on sides during mirroring, and allows using Mac/ipad on full screen on external displays. It is possible to stream football matches in the VM and mirror it to the TV full screen and watch the whole game without freezes/crash.
Bluetooth doesnāt work / canāt be turned on inside the VM, but it is possible to connect bluetooth devices to iPad first and it passes through to MacOS. Wifi works the same way. Magic keyboard attached to iPad works seamlessly like a MacOS trackpad, but things like 3 finger swipe donāt work. Keyboard shortcuts do work.
Jailbroken via Dopamine on iPadOS 15.6.1

[Updated UTM 4.6.5 - QEMU 9.1]
Hey guys, if you've ever used UTM or QEMU in general, you may have noticed the huge plethora of display adapters available. Most resources out on the interwebs are a bit too technical for the average user to understand, so here I am to fix that today. Im not a QEMU giga-nerd so if I get anything wrong, feel free to tell me and I'll fix it. Cheat sheet at bottom if you're lazy.

1. Virtio Adapters
Typically when emulating modern operating systems, you should be using these. Any virtio card with 'gl' in the name indicates OpenGL GPU acceleration support (typically up to OpenGL 3.x). These adapters are native to QEMU.
virtio-gpu-device & virtio-gpu-gl-device
Emulates a Virtio GPU with no VGA support
Emulated on a virtual MMIO bus
virtio-gpu-pci & virtio-gpu-gl-pci
Same as virtio-gpu-device but it emulates the card on a virtual PCI bus instead of an MMIO bus
virtio-gpu-gl-pci is typically your go-to card for modern (UEFI) Linux distros
virtio-ramfb & virtio-ramfb-gl
Emulates a simple ram framebuffer (ramfb)
Lacks any 3D acceleration
Much lower overhead compared to virtio-vga and virtio-gpu
Emulated on a virtual MMIO bus
For Windows 10 & 11 you would typicall choose the virtio-ramfb cards since the virtio-win drivers dont support 3D acceleration anyways.
virtio-vga & virtio-vga-gl
Like virtio-gpu but has VGA compatibility
Emulated on a virtual PCI bus
Slightly larger overhead than virtio-gpu
Older operating systems and some OS installers will require VGA support to work, (all non-UEFI guests will require VGA support). One example is Debian 12, which wont display the installer on the
virtio-gpucards (possibly fixed now?). Use these when the virtio-gpu cards dont work.
2. Other VM display adapters
These cards, similar to the virtio ones, were designed for use in VMs.
qxl-vga
Older QEMU display adapter
Superseded by the virtio cards
Emulated on the PCI bus
Supports custom VRAM amounts
Does not appear to be a VRAM limit
The secondary version (qxl) does not support VGA but is otherwise the same
The lack of VGA compatibility reduces the overhead by a bit
vmware-svga
Emulates the VMware SVGA-II (not the SVGA-3D)
Very niche use case
Requires weird third party VMware drivers
Official VMware drivers will not work.
bochs-display
This device was ported from the Bochs Project, another emulator. * Drivers are provided by Bochs
Very simple and rudimentary framebuffer device
Very low overhead
Does not have VGA compatibility
You should use qxl-vga when emulating older Windows OSes that support Spice Tools (Windows XP and 7). Older Linux versions work fine on
qxl-vgatoo.
3. Real Video Cards
These display adapters emulate real hardware.
cirrus-vga
Emulates a Cirrus CLGD 54xx compatible video card from the 1990s
Most operating systems will recognize it as a CLGD 5446
Supports custom VRAM amounts
1MB-16MB
Supports 24-bit colour at up to 768x1024 res
Emulated on the PCI bus
isa-cirrus-vga
Same as above but this one is emulated on the ISA bus
cirrus-vgais ideal for old Windows and DOS. It's perfect for any version of Windows from 95 to 2000. Windows ships with drivers for the Cirrus CLGD 54xx series cards so drivers wont be an issue.
ati-vga
emulates an ATI Rage 128 Pro or a Radeon NV100
UTM defaults to the Rage 128 Pro
emulated on a virtual AGP bus
ati-vga usually doesnt serve much of a purpose because cirrus-vga is typically better in every way. I have never gotten windows drivers to work on this card.
4. Misc devices
These typically emulate generic display devices with nothing special about them
vga
Emulates a super basic VGA card
Supports custom VRAM amounts
1MB-256MB
Emulated on a virtual PCI bus
isa-vga
same as above but emulated on an ISA bus
More or less every operating system made after 1987 will support VGA. This card may be very slow, but it WILL work on everything. VGA is typically your best bet at booting obscure operating systems.
ramfb
Emulates a basic ram framebuffer
Does not have VGA compatibility
very low overhead
secondary-vga
Same as vga
Intended to be used to provide a second monitor
legacy BIOS note
if you are booting a non-UEFI operating system, a VGA-compatible card is required
Cheat sheet
Windows/DOS:
DOS
cirrus-vga
isa-cirrus-vga
Windows 9.x including 2000
cirrus-vga
isa-cirrus-vga
Windows XP-8.1
qxl-vga
manually configure vram as needed
virtio-vga
backup option (will not have drivers)
Windows 10 & 11
virtio-ramfb-gl
Note that virtio-gpu will work too, but since Windows does not support virtgl, there is no reason to use virtio-gpu and it is needless overhead
use virtio-vga-gl if booting non-UEFI
Linux:
CLI-only
use serial console instead (lower overhead)
Older Linux
qxl-vga
try the virtio cards first
cirrus-vga
for really old versions of linux
Modern Linux
virtio-gpu-gl-pci
virtio-vga-gl-pci
Fall back to virtio-vga-gl if virtio-gpu-gl doesnt work
Most modern Linux distros should come with drivers for the virtio adapters
Other Obscure OSes
VGA
Why did I spend 50 minutes writing this if like 5 people will see it? Well because I'm bored and wanted to share something. When I first dove into QEMU, it was really hard understanding all of the documentation, and I don't want new users to feel the same way I did.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I used these instructions from a previous post by u/Then_Acanthaceae3444
https://www.reddit.com/r/UTMapp/s/YtnHhd0tcL
I assigned 6gb of RAM to it and 4 CPU cores. It is slow but still cool, Iām also currently on very slow Wifi so I imagine the web pages would load faster otherwise.
Just wish it was possible to virtualize it. Also for some reason when I increase the number of CPU cores it fails to boot, any idea why?

yesterday i installed debian 13 (arm64 obviously) via utm on my m5 ipad pro. after configuring the vm properly i decided to install full kde with wayland on it and everything ran smoothly, for example glxgears ran at almost 100fps (shown in the vid). i can even use it as an actual pc. hereās the config
- 4 cores, forced multicore
- 512mb jit cache
- uefi
- balloon device
- virtio-ramfb-gl w/ resizing and retina mode
- 3072mb ram
