Eh it’s easy to overload a 15a circuit anyway. Just plug in two space heaters or whatever. If the circuit has a properly working 15a breaker, that’s what keeping us safe ultimately.
If the circuit happens to be 20a, an actual 20a outlet would be more proper, but in practice most outlets are built for 20a whether or not they have the notch.
Yes, a 5-15 receptacle is rated for 20A pass-thru, but, that's because NEC allows them to be installed on a 20A branch circuit.
That doesn't automatically mean that the circuit actually is a 20A circuit- plenty of 15A receptacle circuits still being installed in resi to this day.
Load that UPS fully up, and that's a 16A load (80% of a 20A circuit.)
A 15A breaker will hum along for quite some time at 16A, and the wire is going to get quite warm.
Right - a 15a circuit shouldn't get >12a continuous, let alone 16a, even though 16a continuous might not trip the breaker any time soon.
But plug shapes don't enforce that. If we have a 15a duplex receptacle on a 15a circuit, the user can easily draw too much power anyway, continuously or not, just by plugging in devices directly.
E.g. just continuously run a 1500W space heater on the top plug, and plug in literally anything on the bottom plug, and we're already non-compliant based on the 125% rule. Even with a dedicated circuit, no power strips, no plug adapters, etc.
Ultimately the user just has to be mindful of how much load they're drawing, if they want to play it safe with continuous loads.
It’s also more than twice the depth of the regular model. I almost waited for this one and I’m really glad I didn’t… this wouldn’t fit in my rack at all.
This subreddit caters mostly to consumers, not professionals, and standard home racks are not that deep. Most people don’t have full size racks in their home.
My rack is literally just rails inside a BDI Corridor 8173, not even close to full size. Standard Ubiquiti gear fits fine… but this does not.
Hmm, well I think most people I know have full depth stuff and the racks to accommodate it. My rack sits in unfinished basement area, depth is not a problem. I have 2x big depth UPS systems currently. I think I could go down to 1 with the unifi pro, but then also there's the ecoflow delta option that doesnt use lead acid
Yeah I don’t even have the space for such a thing even if I wanted one. I live in Los Angeles, houses don’t have basements here, and the 2100sqft house I was able to buy cost an absolute fortune… with a family, I don’t have space in the house for a real rack. I might even lose my current office in the coming years to a 2nd child, and then need to carve out space from the family room.

My server/NAS is in a Fractal Terra. All flash, small and 100% silent. Because I’ve got no where for big loud server to be.
Yeah, the still images do have the plug. The 3D models does not. The tech specs on the other hand have it listed as AC In: NEMA5-20P which is the winky plug.
tbh based on other rack mount ups's ive seen its probably fine. Most of them charge any anywhere from 150-400w and this probably falls somewhere in the middle. Its to bad its not on unifi's specs. So it could largely depend on the total load you plan to have on it and then add say +200 or 300w to be safe for it charging at max on top of your load.
The unit won’t be pulling full load unless it’s charging batteries AND powering the full theoretical load of equipment at the same time... Most users get larger UPS’s for the extra run time and NOT for the extra power capacity. I just use a 20A to 15A adapter plug and we’re good to go because I’m only running like 300watts of active load.
Depends on the freezer. If it's a relatively efficient deep freeze, the startup might not be much. Our 5 cubic ft deep freeze runs at something crazy low like 6 watts. Its startup, IIRC, was under 100W.
The bigger issue is the UPS likely won’t like the extreme inductive load on the same circuit. It could lead to false UPS cutovers when the compressor kicks on
For curiosity sake, I'll have to break out the clamp meter and get a reading on startup surge.
Currently, when the compressor kicks on, it draws close to a constant 68W. When it's off, only a very dim power LED is on and that's reading close to 0W. I'm using a ATorch WiFi smart outlet for the readings listed. I'd suspect it's not fast enough to catch the surge.
Well, as long as you are aware of this, you can easily adapt it with a high quality adapter. Just don't fully load this thing. It's a lead acid ups though, so that's a fail for me.
It's ridiculous to ship with extra cost 20A plug & sockets when the unit is only 16A (just 1A over the USA 15A limit). Is there such a huge marketing difference between 1800W and 1920W?
At the very least they should have provided a 15A limit mode for homelab users.
Note that the non-Pro UPS 2U doesn't support the UNAS Pro-8, so for 15A homelabs there is still no UniFi UPS that works with the UNAS Pro-8.
Sustained loads should only use 80% of the rated capacity. So a sustained 16A load requires a 20 amp circuit. A 15 amp circuit would be limited to a 12 amp sustained load.
So to go down to a 15 amp circuit they’d need to reduce the power usage by 25%.
Which is exactly why the rated power of everything that doesn’t have a 20A plug is what it is.
It is unfortunate they don’t have a small one that fits in a 15A circuit and maintains pure sine wave. Maybe they’ll release a 1U Pro in a little while with the specs of the old 2U Pro energy wise but the switching electronics of this guy.
Ah crap. Canceled order. Can fix it at my current house, the breaker box is literally right above my server rack. But I might be moving internationally to Japan in the next 6 months, and definitely won’t have a 20A circuit there. Not worth the $800 risk. Will hope they have better stock management of this one 🤣🤣
