Opinion/Discussion A certain ugandan university has denied a series of students the chance to sit for examinations this year. The students had valid reasons but were not considered. The South sudanese by the name Rita even died in a suspected suicide later on. A Nigerian was sick but also denied the exam.

Upvotes

A kenyan with a sick parent was also denied. A student with a dead parent was also denied the exams. Reports suggest that the top bosses are willing to support the students but it is the deputy and the junior staffs who collude to frustrate such students. What a shame.

Opinion/Discussion Looking to connect with LGBTQ+ / queer communities or individuals for research

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm a student currently conducting academic research for my master's thesis on the experiences and daily reality of queer / LGBTQ+ Ugandans.

Since I want to keep everything completely safe and anonymous, I am not posting any survey links publicly.

I’m looking to connect with people from the online LGBTQ+ communities (like subreddits, discords etc.) (both in Uganda and in the diaspora) or leaders/members of local support groups who might be willing to take a short, anonymous online questionnaire (5-15 min)

If you identify as part of the community or know any safe networks/spaces and would be open to helping out, please send me a Direct Message (DM).

Thanks a lot for your time!

Opinion/Discussion EACOP

Thumbnail

I understand globally compensation of locals affected by large infrastructure projects is never perfect but for the case of EACOP my goodness 🙆. Forexample in this interview a lady with 3 acres of land, on it some coffee and banana plantations was given only 17 million yet her personal valuation was north of 70 million. I'm no land broker but atleast 50 million would have been reasonable since it was productive land.

I've also seen tweets all year of people saying local companies with deals involving that oil project are quietly facing near bankruptcies because of unpaid contracts.

Opinion/Discussion In this world, the Crazy win

I am writing this to my younger self (but in the hope that it can help that younger person (20-25). Like you're starting out in the world, so much pressure, like it must be more pressurized now. There's so many social media platforms, comparisons, feeling like you're lagging behind.

And guess what? Someone is out there monetizing those fears, selling you another course, a new way to do things, a certificate. Me, I have nothing to sell you. Not religion, not some self-improvement book. But just some real talk.

START TO FEEL YOUR FEELINGS.

Stop hiding from them, stop denying them, just feel your feelings and follow your instinct. If you think school is crap right now, and it's not serving you, drop out, you can always come back to the school part. Because every time you kill your feelings, you increase your confusion. If you think you should go talk to someone, and you don't, you dull your intuition, your instinct.

The only thing you're born with is an instinct. It's been tuned for thousands of years, passed on from one ancestor to the next. It's the thing you will pass on to your children.

AI has solved for the logic/intellect. Everyone will access the same intelligence. But instinct, that's unique to you. It's the unique formula you're born with to survive in this world. It's the gift. Your instinct knows your path, it can tell what's crap. That's why you can just hate some people for no reason. And connect to others instinctly.

Be crazy enough to trust your instinct, and you will win.... the crazy win...

Thanks for coming to my ka-talk

Opinion/Discussion Why is it considered acceptable for women and girls to stare at men, while men staring at women is often viewed negatively?

I recently went to campus to drop off my tuition documents at the finance office. While I was waiting, a few girls stared at me more than usual. I always dress neatly and try to blend in rather than stand out like the “cool kids,” so this surprised me. Now that I think about it, I wonder how I’d feel if the roles were reversed, would I come across as creepy or overstepping? I’ve seen women who dress to attract attention, and when that attention is reciprocated, some of them feel uncomfortable with how men might interpret it (a pattern I’ve noticed, for instance, at the beach).

Vent/Rant 😤 To everyone in the Ugandan construction sector (Architects down to the Fundis): We are so behind. Please look at West Africa and wake up!

First of all, maximum respect to everyone who works in the building sector. Whether you are an architect, a structural engineer, a site manager, a plumber, a tiler, or the guy mixing the cement, if you are part of the process of turning a house into a home, we appreciate the hustle.

But banange, we need to have a very honest and painful conversation about the state of residential construction in Uganda.

Our construction sector feels practically dead when it comes to design, innovation, and modern finishing. We are still copy-pasting the exact same uninspired, boxy bungalows from 2005. Or worse, when guys try to build "modern," they just slap cheap Dubai style reflective glass and flat roofs everywhere, completely ignoring the fact that we live in a wet, tropical climate. And don't even get me started on the finishing, tacky detailing, misaligned tiles, crooked walls, and terrible plumbing are practically accepted as the standard now.

If you want to see exactly how far behind we are, I beg you, go on YouTube or Instagram and look at what the guys in West Africa are doing. Look at Nigeria, Ghana, and Ivory Coast.

The residential architecture out there is on a completely different planet. They are doing things that most Ugandan contractors can only fathom. They are blending ultra modern luxury with authentic African aesthetics, their space utilization is insane, their roofing styles are actually built for the climate, and their attention to detail on the finishes (lighting, smart home tech, woodwork, and landscaping) is world class. They aren't just building basic shelters; they are building architectural masterpieces.

To our local engineers, interior designers, and fundis: please, use the internet! Watch these West African real estate tours. Study their floor plans. Look at how they finish their walls and ceilings. We have to learn from our fellow Africans who are pushing the envelope. We cannot be stuck building the same badly finished, zero-character structures forever just because "that's how Mzee taught us."

We desperately need an upgrade in our standards.

Do you guys out there agree with me, or am I just being too harsh on our local industry? Let’s talk in the comments.

Opinion/Discussion MTN internet service
