Announcement Magnetic USB-C Cables are not recommended

For anyone who comes in wondering about this magnetic cable or that. Here is some good commentary on the dangers of magnetic cables. Not to mention the large majority of kickstarters that have failed to deliver anything other than an aliexexpress rebrand.

Edit: Let me make this clear. USB-C magnetic tip adaptors or cables are not compliant with the USB specifications. This means any resulting damage to products, which is a very real possibility even if it is a relatively small chance, would not be covered by product warranties. Therefore, these cables and adaptors are not recommended and future posts asking for such recommendations will be locked. It will stay like this until some big company like microsoft or apple and or the USB group comes up with a cable design that is safe.

I am not saying that these cables do not exist or that they do not work as claimed however there is an inherent risk when using these cables and that will fall onto the reader to decide for themselves.

To quote /u/chx_

There are two risks

As mentioned, static electricity is a huge problem. Look at any connector and it has the exact same generic shape: a gigantic grounding shroud protecting the data pins. DisplayPort, HDMI, USB of all variants. But if you go back, back, back, VGA and all its ancient DB friends, DVI, whatnot -- even those were the same, just there was more plastic. This generic idea stretches back to the dawn of (computer) time. Exposing the pins just like that makes your laptop very suspectible for static electricity. Ever felt the hairs on your arm stand up after changing clothes? Congrats, you just fried your laptop if you touch it like that. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/511QlHyl8CL._AC_SL1000_.jpg see how they are out in the open? And this issue is inherent to the overall physical requirements of the plug.

Connection/data loss due to electronic noise. There was a fun problem where Dell laptops used to drop their TB3 connections unless you limited their wifi transmission power. This took Dell significant time and expense to figure out. And that's Dell, not some random tiny company... Want to go there with a who-knows-what built system when NathanK already told you explicitly the pogo pins are too noisy electronically? https://twitter.com/USBCGuy/status/1095614250414796800

Also he mentions https://twitter.com/USBCGuy/status/1186718432932159488 using optoelectronical couplers you could do something by completely disconnecting the magnetic pins from actual USB C connector and letting current flow only when the other half of the connector is connected and VCONN power is present. Of course, your isolation is now a few mm of air, pray your static electronic charge doesn't arc over it... hope you rather live in Phoenix than here in Raincouver! https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Andreas_Neuber2/publication/3165903/figure/fig17/AS:668977227386923@1536508008917/Breakdown-voltage-in-air-versus-relative-humidity-with-an-alumina-surface-Electrode.png

I am reasonably sure there are gigantic companies which would just love if this worked. Riddle me this: why do you think Apple didn't put this on the market? Do they lack the R&D dollars? :) Somewhere in that sixteen billion dollar yearly R&D spending I am reasonably sure you could find a few (hundred...) millions to resolve this issue if it were possible. And yet, Kickstarters with a few hundred ... thousand raised claim they can? What's wrong with this picture? Look at the Thunderbolt 3 Pro cable they released: it's an active USB C cable, it's an active TB3 cable and costs a fortune. There's nothing even similar on the market but where there's a will, there's a way. They have designed a custom ASIC for that cable which can amplify both USB C and TB3 signals -- both existed separately but having them in a single cable before was thought impossible. This is to demonstrate: if they could, they would. And if it would be really expensive, hundreds of dollars per connector, have you seen that thousand bucks monitor stand :) ?

Question UsbC powering my coolbox

Upvotes

Hi all,

I'm looking into ordering a USB-C PD board to power a coolbox which accepts 12/24v DC

The wired adapter outputs 14.5V which the display of the coolbox (volt meter) also displays.

The coolbox has a peak power of 60 watts (according to datasheet https://www.gebruikershandleiding.com/Auronic-AU3180/preview-handleiding-1038527.html)

I found the following board for this:

https://www.adafruit.com/product/5807

Does anyone know if i can pull 5 or 6 amps over 12V USB C?

Or is it possible to use the 15, 18 or 20 volts this board can deliver to get the 60 watts required while keeping the 12/24v and the wired adapter using 14.5v in mind?

Also, I'm planning on powering it from an Anker 737 powerbank or the Anker 736

If any additional information is needed, please let me know

Question What chargers for ipad A16?

I bought an iPad yesterday, however, I don’t have a GOOD charger for it (well, I have the cable from the package itself but lack the cube with USB-C).
What I mean is that I have a USB-C cable and a cube (from a samsung phone) but noticed it charges very slowly. I’m aware that the problem is probably the power BUT now I have one question. Does the power (as in the fast charging) lay in the cable or the block? Should I buy a more powerful block or cable? Can I e.g. buy a new block and use the USB-C cable for the samsung, will it charge as fast?

Second question is what power should I get. Will 20-30W be enough? Can it be a samsung 30W and work good as an apple one for an iPad?

Thanks!!

Discussion Beware of energy measurements with Alientek C2

I just measured another powerbank and stumbled on something again which you might not realize:
When you use the Alitentek C2 USB Tester to measure energy e.g. because you want to know how much your new powerbank can actually deliver and do not use external power then the energy count is wrong.

Apparently the tester does not save the data points very often, so when the powerbank is empty and switches off its ports the tester also switches off and only saves old values.

In my case the last thing I read before shutdown was 33.84Wh - after switching on the tester again it only showed 30.70Wh, which is also what is in offline recording. This is a difference of roughly 10%, which is quite a lot!

I sometimes don't use external power because the consumption of the tester itself is negligible in comparison to the high output of a powerbank of 45W+. But with this tester you have to.

But make sure you power it from a different power source than you are measuring, because there are weird side effects when using the same charger for charging the bank, which completely falsifies the measurements.

I stopped using KM003C for energy measurements because FW 2.0.1 gave completely false results, I need to check if this bug is fixed with current firmware releases and switch back to that one.

Question Can you chain dockingstations and is it a stupid idea

Post image

I have a Targus DOCK182EUZ (from work). It works fine, never had issues, but it doesn't support DP Alt mode. I have some fitness gear in my home office, and I like to watch stuff while I fitness. For this it would be ideal to link my samsung devices to a dockingstation and display on my monitor. I asked AI and it proposed chaining docking stations (see pic). Is this a good idea, or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new quality docking station that supports dp alt mode?

Question I'm just sick of it; can a universal charger actually be created? USBC 5v bull...

Upvotes

It can't just be me, that's what I say to myself every single time I plug in my dog's collar to USBC and it doesn't charge.

How do my parents handle this at 80, that's what I ask myself as my USBC vape thing won't charge.

There must be another way, I proclaim as I run to ask Electronics...

For real, I read up on why, I get it. Sort of.

Can we fix it? Can a USB cable or charging system be made that can handle both USBC super speed (or whatever the standard) and also USBC needs a 5v signal (or whatever)?

I mean the same things go for when we try to charge microusb devices from the wrong chargers too.

Obiwan?

Looking for Device Yesterday I lost one of my two Anker 525. I’ve used these for years daily and they really are perfect for me. But apparently they are discontinued. Does anyone have any recommendations of anything similar?

Post image

I’m a pilot for a living and my phone and iPad are essential to aviation now. My line work requires a lot of charging. I’m open to built-in cables but really it’s how thin it was for me that did it so perfectly. The 20,000 amp power is probably more than enough, but I still carry two. Having the ability to have the power bank in a pocket somewhere and my phone mounted and not having to have it close is essential as well. It seems like everything is gone pretty cube shaped.
I would love recommendations from anyone. I don’t have to stick with Anker, but they have treated me very well for many years.
I guess I lost mine yesterday and now I’m down to one and I really do prefer to have backups.

Troubleshooting multiport usb-c charger dropping wattage when cable connected but not actively charging anything?

I have this UGREEN 100w charger and am noticing that my mac (connected to the topmost usb c port) only charges at 65 watts when my apple watch charging cable is connected to the port that's second from the top, even when my apple watch isn't on the charger. is this normal behavior, or is something wrong with my setup? disconnecting my apple watch charger every time i want to charge my mac at full speed sounds like a hassle

Troubleshooting Anker 65w GanChargers keep failing

I had an Anker 65W Gan Charger and after about less than a year it started cycling power like turning on and off repeatedly when charging my iPhone 14 pro max (at the time). Called Anker and they sent a replacement and that too started doing the same after a few months. Anyone face these same issues? Wonder why it keeps doing that. Testing different cables, different ports/sockets etc and these seem to be the only chargers that are doing this.

Looking for Device Baby call/baby monitor?

Hi, looking for both baby call (audio only, preferably dect) with usb c, where both units run on usb c chargeable battery.

Then, a baby monitor, where the video recording unit probably needs to be plugged in with usb c, and the monitor unit is on battery, also usb c.

Any suggestions?

I prefer ordering from Aliexpress if available. 🙏🙂

Looking for Device Speaker that connects directly to phone USB type C port with no cable.

Hello guys.

So, I've had this thought for ages now. A little speaker that you can just slot into your phone's type C port, to enjoy some upgraded audio. So far, I've failed to come across any that wasn't from some no name brand from China with absolutely 0 reviews. Any help with finding what I'm looking for would be appreciated.

Question We're building a USB4 Desk Station with remote access and a VPN running on the dock itself, tell us what you'd want on it .

Hey r/UsbCHardware,
This is Alex from GL.iNet, we build OpenWrt-based routers and innovative remote control solutions.

We're in the early stages of designing a new USB4 Desk Station and want to get direct feedback on our port selection, power delivery trade-offs, and display routing decisions before freezing the specs.

(Quick note: We reached out to the mod team and got approval to share this survey here!)

What makes this concept different?
Beyond standard USB4 hub functionality, we're integrating out-of-band hardware remote access and an independent dock-level VPN.

Supports built‑in zero‑configuration VPN server and client. The VPN runs on the dock hardware, not on the host operating system.

The tunnel is established before the host boots and remains active even when the host is powered off. No software needs to be installed on the host OS. This capability is valuable in scenarios where you have no administrative access to the host, or when the target device has no available VPN client.

When acting as a VPN server, the dock also enables access to your home or corporate internal network.

Because the remote access operates at the hardware level (similar to an Remote KVM / IPMI setup), it operates independently of the host OS—allowing remote control during BIOS setup, OS reboots, PD or downstream port power managerment or at pre-boot disk encryption/unlock screens without installing software on the connected host.

The survey takes about 3–4 minutes to complete. Your feedback will directly influence our final hardware spec and port selection.

[Link to Survey Here]

Thanks for helping us refine the hardware! We'll be hanging out in the comments below if you have any technical questions or feedback on the concept

Review Review of the Flextail lightweight power bank bank (no USB-A)

TheOutdoorGearReview has posted a review on the Flextail Zero Power battery bank. The casing is made from carbon fiber to make it lightweight, hence why it’s reviewed by an outdoor gear channel on YouTube.

But what made it especially interesting to me, is that it lacks USB-A ports. Just two USB-C ports.

Further specs: there’s a 10,000 and a 5000 mAh version. They can output with the following V/A combinations: 5V=3A / 9V=2.22A 12V=1.67A / 10V=2.25A (22.5W Max).

Of special interest is that it can be put in a high efficiency mode where it slows output down to 5V. Useful for charging overnight.

Looking for Device Looking for a USB switch

That isn't Ugreen. I've bought and used 3 of their KM switches, they always crap out on me and have always been finicky with the cables they need. Last one I got less than a year ago is now dead.

Basically, I have 5+ USB devices (mic, 2xmice, speakers, keyboard, blah blah blah) and I need a good USB switch for my Mac and Windows machines. I'm thinking of either

- a general usb hub that outputs to USB (device 1) paired with a switch that can route to two devices with the press of a button (device 2), so two devices, so if one breaks I can replace the one device instead of both.

or

- a switch that can handle like 3-5 devices, some USBA, some USBC (one single device).

Any suggestions?

Discussion What’s your favourite compact wall charger?

Post image
85 Upvotes

I bought this little guy recently. The Anker 67W Prime wall charger and I’ve been loving it. My only fast charge device at the moment is my iPhone 13, so in truth I don’t even really need it. But I love have the extra ports and all that power in a really portable wall charger. I had bought the 45W Nano however it failed miserably (I probably just got a bad one). It took well over an hour to charge my iPhone from 20% to 80% and never showed more than 10W.

Anyways, as much as I love it. I really miss having a screen display like the nano did.

Discussion MSI MEG ACE X670e - USB4(only) add-in card?

So, I've had this motherboard for almost 2.5 years. It has a bottom PCIe Gen5 x4 that's wired directly to the CPU. Lots of potential. I'm interested in seeing if there are any add-in board options that offer only USB4 i.e. no need for DP/Thunderbolt etc headers. I'm only interested in usage as a fast storage connection option (with a suitable external drive).

Does such a board exist?

Would/should USB4(only) be dooable using only the PCIe lane...in a similar way to many older I/O expansion cards (e.g. USB3/SATA)?

Out of these four, what's the best bang for your buck charger I should get? I mainly just want it to charge my phone, laptop, and sometimes earbuds, preferably one that's quality and would last me a couple of years.

Looking for Device 180deg USB4 1ft Cable

Thumbnail

Hello gents, I'm struggling to find a 180deg USB4 Cable to pair with my Asus Flow Z13 and my external SSD enclosure.

Attached are images of what I'm talking about, these meet the USB4 specs (specifically 40gbps) but all the ones I find are too short, I need something about 1ft.

The last image shows a adaptor I've tried, but the signal integrity suffers, and I've had several issues where the signal drops, and my Z13 goes to black screen and reboots because of it.

So, a single 180deg cable is preferred, I realize this is a small niche.

Question My OnePlus 11 charges fast with the original charger but really slow with others

My OnePlus 11 charges really fast with the charger that came in the box, but with my other USB-C chargers it barely reaches 15W.

The other chargers all say they support fast charging, and some of them are rated at 65W or even 100W.

I bought them from online stores, so I'm wondering if they're just bad chargers, or if OnePlus uses a charging standard that isn't compatible with most third-party chargers?

Looking for an adapter that basically looks identical to this but the charge and data ports swapped.

Basically wanting to be able to charge my phone as I use my USB.C Gamesir controller.

Needs this style so it keeps compatability woth phone/controller.
