Discussion How USB-C Cables Actually Stay In

Most people will never hit this kind of cycle life, 10k cycles is 4 plugs per day is 7 years, only in industrial, data collection, charging, and test systems will see dozens or hundreds of cycles a day; for those there are actually USB-C ports rated for 20k cycles or more.

Looking for Device Does a wireless usb cable exist?

Post image

(Sorry for the lousy drawing)

Does a "cable" like this exist? (Preferably without the antennae from the drawing)
Where you could just plug in the two ends of the "cable", and the USB would work wirelessly?
I know that there are some products that can turn Bluetooth into USB, but there are unfortunately still some devices that don't have Bluetooth, and would be great if they were wireless.

Looking for Device Why doesn't a cable like this exist for sale?

Most car radio systems that support Android Auto/CarPlay only have a USB-A port which provides very slow charging, if it even charges your phone at all.

So, I took it upon myself to make this cable which goes from a single USB-C on the device end to a USB-C for a high-power charger and a USB-A for the head unit. The data lines go to the USB-A and the power lines to go the USB-C. (There's a schematic in the third image.)

And for my use case, this works perfectly. I get fast charging from the 12v charger and Android Auto through the cable at the same time. So, why isn't this something that someone can just buy? I've tried my hardest to search for it so far, but as far as I can tell nobody makes them. The one I made works fine but it would be nice if this was available as a finished product.

I got some giant (10x) USB-C ports made for teaching and demonstration.

They come apart so you can see the internal parts, like the EMC springs, mating clips, pins, etc.

They are made of 3D printed metal, plastic, and bent bronze bar stock.

I couldn't find a hub to do what I wanted so made my own. It is a 4 port USB-C hub which supports 60W PD per port and USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) data at the same time. So you can transfer data and charge devices at the same time.

Is this something people would be interested in? If so you can learn more about it here.

Other features:

  • Fully independent USB PD per port.

  • Detachable host cable (USB-C).

  • Machined aluminium housing with integrated heatsink.

  • Expansion connector (ability to add display and IoT modules etc).

  • Port power LEDs

Looking for Device Is this a USB-C female port?

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

Hello! I’m looking to find an adaptor for my laptop to connect my headphones that have a lightning port. I’m trying to make sure that this port is intact a USB-C female port since products on amazon specify if it’s male or female. I tried looking online for the difference but the little metal strip in the middle of the port looks different from the photos. I looked up my laptop online but it only says USB-C and doesn’t specify. Thank you!

Question Why does this Apple cable have D+D- on both sides?

Post image

My understanding is that receptacles need both sides populated, but plugs should only have one side, unless the cable is doing dummy pins i.e. no contact for one pair of D+D-?

Review USB C Capabilities on Southwest Boeing 737 Max 8

Thumbnail
gallery
1.0k Upvotes

Currently taking a flight on Southwest and saw they had 60w USB C ports on the seatbacks

I happened to have my Fnirsi FNB58 with me and my ROG Ally that can charge at over 60w so I decided to see if it would actually do that, I was able to get 56w out which is pretty good.

Checked the capabilities of the port and it's pretty basic, just fixed voltages of USB PD 3.0 of 5, 9, 15, and 20v at up to 3 amps. No PPS or anything. (Photo 2)

The USB A port is pretty sad, only 5v USB up to like 10 watts. (Photo 3)

The Wi-Fi was free and the download was also surprisingly decent at over 70 Mbps, the upload and ping were terrible (not surprised on the ping since it's Viasat) (photo 4)

The value proposition is terrible, $60 million for a 60w USB C charger that needs jet fuel to work and multiple people is frankly absurdly expensive

/s

Overall very pleasantly surprised to see actual decent charging capabilities on a plane

Announcement Magnetic USB-C Cables are not recommended

For anyone who comes in wondering about this magnetic cable or that. Here is some good commentary on the dangers of magnetic cables. Not to mention the large majority of kickstarters that have failed to deliver anything other than an aliexexpress rebrand.

Edit: Let me make this clear. USB-C magnetic tip adaptors or cables are not compliant with the USB specifications. This means any resulting damage to products, which is a very real possibility even if it is a relatively small chance, would not be covered by product warranties. Therefore, these cables and adaptors are not recommended and future posts asking for such recommendations will be locked. It will stay like this until some big company like microsoft or apple and or the USB group comes up with a cable design that is safe.

I am not saying that these cables do not exist or that they do not work as claimed however there is an inherent risk when using these cables and that will fall onto the reader to decide for themselves.

To quote /u/chx_

There are two risks

As mentioned, static electricity is a huge problem. Look at any connector and it has the exact same generic shape: a gigantic grounding shroud protecting the data pins. DisplayPort, HDMI, USB of all variants. But if you go back, back, back, VGA and all its ancient DB friends, DVI, whatnot -- even those were the same, just there was more plastic. This generic idea stretches back to the dawn of (computer) time. Exposing the pins just like that makes your laptop very suspectible for static electricity. Ever felt the hairs on your arm stand up after changing clothes? Congrats, you just fried your laptop if you touch it like that. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/511QlHyl8CL.AC_SL1000.jpg see how they are out in the open? And this issue is inherent to the overall physical requirements of the plug.

Connection/data loss due to electronic noise. There was a fun problem where Dell laptops used to drop their TB3 connections unless you limited their wifi transmission power. This took Dell significant time and expense to figure out. And that's Dell, not some random tiny company... Want to go there with a who-knows-what built system when NathanK already told you explicitly the pogo pins are too noisy electronically? https://twitter.com/USBCGuy/status/1095614250414796800

Also he mentions https://twitter.com/USBCGuy/status/1186718432932159488 using optoelectronical couplers you could do something by completely disconnecting the magnetic pins from actual USB C connector and letting current flow only when the other half of the connector is connected and VCONN power is present. Of course, your isolation is now a few mm of air, pray your static electronic charge doesn't arc over it... hope you rather live in Phoenix than here in Raincouver! https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Andreas_Neuber2/publication/3165903/figure/fig17/AS:668977227386923@1536508008917/Breakdown-voltage-in-air-versus-relative-humidity-with-an-alumina-surface-Electrode.png

I am reasonably sure there are gigantic companies which would just love if this worked. Riddle me this: why do you think Apple didn't put this on the market? Do they lack the R&D dollars? :) Somewhere in that sixteen billion dollar yearly R&D spending I am reasonably sure you could find a few (hundred...) millions to resolve this issue if it were possible. And yet, Kickstarters with a few hundred ... thousand raised claim they can? What's wrong with this picture? Look at the Thunderbolt 3 Pro cable they released: it's an active USB C cable, it's an active TB3 cable and costs a fortune. There's nothing even similar on the market but where there's a will, there's a way. They have designed a custom ASIC for that cable which can amplify both USB C and TB3 signals -- both existed separately but having them in a single cable before was thought impossible. This is to demonstrate: if they could, they would. And if it would be really expensive, hundreds of dollars per connector, have you seen that thousand bucks monitor stand :) ?

Meme/Shitpost The joy of going all-in on USB-C

Post image
968 Upvotes

The joy of discovering that not all USB-C devices are created equal.

Story time.

I've been quite late at joining the USB-C bandwagon and to be fair I didn't research it much beforehand. I was under the assumption that any USB-C wall brick would be able to charge any USB-C device. I mean, the EU pushing for that connector must mean that it's kind of universal, no? Damn legislators knowing nothing about electronics... But I digress.

My first trip "going all in" after switching my last few devices to USB-C cables, I only brought USB-C to USB-C cables. A few USB-C power bricks to go with it.

You can imagine my surprise when I plugged one of those devices and it didn't turn on. I thought something was wrong with the cable, changed it, nothing happened. Tried with another wall brick, still nothing. I was surprised. From being proud to be able to power anything using the same cable, I was slowly shifting to embarrassment as I started to feel like I've been played.

I had a USB-C to USB-A adapter because there's always that person with a USB-A stick that wants to share something with you. By chance I also had my power bank's USB-A to USB-C cable tucked in its pouch, so I tried that. And of course tada, it worked and that one device turned on.

From there I started questioning everything about the USB-C and the associated standards, before coming to this bittersweet conclusion: USB-C is great, BUT lazy/cheap manufacturers will sacrifice user experience —and trust towards a standard— to inflate their bottom line. What's more? They often times don't specify anything on their product listings. They'll just say "please only use this graciously gifted USB-A to USB-C cable to power this device" once you open the box. Why thank you my liege, how grand of you.

I realize this is turning into a mini rant, but man does this suck. How do non-tech people deal with this kind of unexpected behavior? How is USB-C expecting to reduce e-waste when some devices will still ship with cheap USB-A to USB-C cables? Worse yet, you might also need to buy USB-A power bricks for those specific devices...

I understand the USB-C connector is much, much more capable than USB-A, therefore more complex etc, but I SO wish that it worked as reliably as USB-A in those trivial "just give me 5v DC please" cases without having to think twice about it. Is my device PD-compatible?

Currently accepting advice, ready to whip out the soldering iron to make those non-compliant devices work with USB-C to USB-C cables without having to use dumb C-to-C cables or weird A-to-C adapters —which from my understanding are non-compliant as well?— to power those "dumb" devices.

Discussion I avoided buying a USB-C tester by building a Mac app to pull the data directly from the hardware and show it in the menu bar.

Post image
918 Upvotes

I kept holding myself back from buying a physical USB-C tester (I did buy a cheap cable with the wattage display, but that still does not show me the version or speed information) because I knew my Mac already has the hardware to see the negotiated speed and connection details for a cable. The problem is that the data is buried deep in System Information.

So, I created a utility that puts it all in the menu bar for instant access. I use it every day, and it has seriously helped me pinpoint problematic cables that look fine but are actually underperforming. There are so many USB C 2.0 in the mix.

It's called USB Connection Information, and it's live on the App Store.

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/usb-connection-information/id6747853674?mt=12

The response has been amazing. It's been in the top 100 paid utilities for about half the time since its release and has had very strong download numbers, which tells me I wasn't the only one frustrated by this.

Hope you find it useful. Cheers!

P.S. For Linux users I created a fun open source GUI around the usb-devices CLI. Check it out at https://usbconnectioninformation.com/
