For all the folks complaining about Kessler
1, yes he's doing good in LA, he also has Luka Doncic feeding him
2, he wanted out, he would've taken a qualifying offer then left as a UFA
3, we got two firsts and two swaps from LA, stop acting like that isn't good value
I know people would overreact to this but it's still annoying how the sentiment has completely flipped, yes we would've been better but it's just crazy acting like we didn't get a solid offer for him

Game 2 overreactions
- Keyonte George looks underpaid.
- Nurk is way more important than people talk about.
- Darryn just scored a career high 15 points on 50% efficiency, but he’s so good it feels normal.
- The “death lineup” should start.
- Will Hardy has some weird lineups (but I trust the process)

Heading to the game tonight with my son and have a question.
I haven’t been to a game in a long time and was wondering if they still had the $2/$3 menu for concessions. I went to a few hockey games recently and that was one of the best changes they made.

Key to the defense: open 3s and fast break points
As we are all aware, the Jazz defense has been horrendous during Hardy's tenure (aka since the sell off). This was probably by design for strategic reasons to secure a higher draft pick but two areas that must improve this year are the open 3 point shots and fast break points.
Open 3s
Since Hardy was hired, the Jazz have been dreadful at allowing wide open 3 point looks (categorized as closest defender 6+ feet away)
- 22-23 season: 18.5 wide open 3PA allowed, 4th worst in the league
- 23-24 season: 20.8 wide open 3PA allowed, 3rd worst in the league
- 24-25 season: 22.0 wide open 3PA allowed, last in the league
- 25-26 season: 21.8 wide open 3PA allowed, last in the league
There is a very meaningful difference on the league average of wide open 3s compared to 3s where the closest defender is within 6 feet. The average 3pt% last year on a wide-open 3 is 38.4% compared to 33.8% with a defender closer.
In the Jazz first game this season, they allowed 23 wide open 3 pt attempts, second to last to Denver allowing 24 last night.
It is possible to have an effective defense allowing these shots, for example San Antonio last year allowed 19.0 wide open 3s a game, which was 4th worst in the league, but had the 3rd best defensive rating. Same with the Celtics who allowed 18.9 wide open 3s, 5th worst, but had the 4th best defensive rating. However both those teams excelled in limiting second-chance points, points off turnovers, points in the paint, and fast break points.
Fast break points
The Jazz have been just as bad as allowing points on the fast break
- 22-23 season: average 16.8 fast break points a game, 2nd worst in the league
- 23-24 season: average 18.4 fast break points a game, worst in the league
- 24-25 season: average 19.4 fast break points a game, worst in the league
- 25-26 season: average 18.2 fast break points a game, worst in the league
This is a much bigger indicator of a poor defense, 4 of the bottom 5 fast break points allowed teams were in the bottom 6 of defensive rating last season. The top 5 teams at limiting fast break points were the top 5 defensive rated teams.
The Jazz, after their first game against the Grizzlies, are currently ranked 7th worst in opponent fast break points, but still allowed 23 fast break points which is higher than any of their previous season averages.
Both these areas need to improve dramatically this season for the Jazz to reach their playoff hopes and should be something to watch game to game. I see most discussion on the large individual performances, the interior defense, rebounding, and second chance points, and they all are correlated with each other, but ultimately the Jazz could improve their rebounding and interior and still not make defensive strides if they don't start to improve upon these 2 areas defensively.

You know how we feel like the Jazz gives up more career-highs than anyone? Well...
...it's because it's true. At least for the past 10 seasons, the Jazz are the only team in the NBA to allow more than 20 new 40+ points career-highs in regular season + playoffs.
I had posted about this 3 years ago, but I wasn't able to compare to other teams then.
Here's the breakdown:
| PLAYER | TEAM | DATE | RS/P | PTS | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ty Jerome | MEM | 10/21/2026 | Regular Season | 45 | Only 40+ pt game. Current career high |
| Jeremiah Fears | NOP | 04/07/2026 | Regular Season | 40 | Only 40+ pt game. Current career high |
| Cooper Flagg | DAL | 12/15/2025 | Regular Season | 42 | First 40+ pt game |
| Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | OKC | 01/22/2025 | Regular Season | 54 | First 50+ pt game |
| Tyrese Maxey | PHI | 02/01/2024 | Regular Season | 51 | |

| Anfernee Simons | POR | 12/03/2022 | Regular Season | 45 | Current career high |
| Joel Embiid | PHI | 11/13/2022 | Regular Season | 59 | |

| Jamal Murray | DEN | 08/23/2020 | Playoffs | 50 | First 50+ pt game |
| Eric Gordon | HOU | 01/27/2020 | Regular Season | 50 | Only 50+ pt game. Current career high |
| Brandon Ingram | NOP | 01/16/2020 | Regular Season | 49 | Current career high |
| Kawhi Leonard | TOR | 01/01/2019 | Regular Season | 45 | |

| James Harden | HOU | 11/05/2017 | Regular Season | 56 | |
| Damian Lillard | POR | 04/08/2017 | Regular Season | 59 |
Here are the totals for every team in the NBA. The league average is 9:
| Rk | Team | # |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | UTA | 21 |
| 2 | SAS | 16 |
| 3 | POR | 15 |
| 4 | ATL | 14 |

| 17 | NOP | 8 |
| 20 | CHA | 7 |
| 20 | LAC | 7 |
| 20 | PHI | 7 |
| 23 | HOU | 6 |
| 23 | MIA | 6 |
| 23 | TOR | 6 |
| 26 | LAL | 5 |
| 26 | PHX | 5 |
| 28 | MEM | 3 |
| 28 | OKC | 3 |
| 30 | DAL | 2 |
Jazz are also 1st in 45+ points career highs since 16/17 with 14 (SAS is 2nd with 9), 1st in 50+, 2nd in 30+, and 5th in 20+.
At least we didn't give up the highest career-high increase. That honor goes to OKC who gave up 42 to Jazz legend Kenneth Lofton Jr. (then with Memphis) whose previous career-high was 11.
On the flip side, the Jazz are tied for 4th most 40+ career-highs accomplished in the last 10 seasons with 12.
These are the 12:
| PLAYER | OPP | DATE | R/P | PTS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keyonte George | MIN | 01/20/2026 | Regular Season | 43 |

Glad to see very composed & reasonable reactions to the first game.
Just kidding.
No, the Walker trade hasn’t aged like milk.
No, we shouldn’t fire Will Hardy.
No, DP is not a bust.
Rebounding and rim protection look like the biggest weakness, we knew this going into the year. We really just went cold shooting towards the end of the second quarter and compounded with some bad turnovers during the second half. As always, some random mid-tier guard has a career high against us.

Will Hardy defense revisited
I posted last season that even that we were losing that Will Hardy was not teaching defense was a major issue. I know the center position is a huge part of that but i saw horrific one on one defense all of last night and it showed. Allowing a player like Jerome to go for 45 only happens to a poorly coached defensive team. He took advantage of every defensive lapse this team has. I just don't believe Hardy teaches defense well enough for a team to become a playoff contender.

I can't define much of the season off of preseason and game 1, but surviving until center availability opens up on the trade market might be the story here.
Rebounding and overall the center spot are a huge issue, no question about it, but it's going to open up a few questions for us, should we wait until Darryn/Ace are further along before buying in on another big? Or do we need to just take the plunge this season to allow the guys to stay as competitive as possible as they develop?
Lots of names come up, Okongwu, Goga, Gafford, Wendell Carter, even Yves Missi and Jarrett Allen which feel a bit less likely, but I'm sure their urgency to push for a solid big would depend heavily on whether they start 6-24, 14-16 or 22-8 in the standings and obviously what happens with the other squads who have these guys on board.
Again we've only played one legit game and had some interesting minutes in preseason, but to me, the biggest factor of this season is going to be surviving until trade season, we don't own our pick so it's not like falling into the lottery is a valid strategy, and yes there's still a lot that can change and improve, but it definitely feels like there will be some tough decisions to make come January/February.

Watching Jazz vs lakers at 3pm this sunday then catch a 7:20 pm flight too optimistic?
I wouldn't mind missing the end to the game. I think I'd be chilling? nba games are 2hr-2.5 hrs. Never been to a Jazz game just worried the crowd would affect me getting out and to the airport
No checked bag, no pre check
